Vaishnava Khanda · Chapter 59
The Fourfold Form Revealed: Jagannatha, Balabhadra, Subhadra and Sudarshana
Verse 1 (skanda.2.59.1)
jaiminiruvāca tataḥ sa pṛthivīpālastathā kṛtvāṁ'tarikṣagā yaduvāca girāṁ devī tadvatparicacāra ha
Jaimini said: Then that guardian of the earth did accordingly, and acted precisely as the sky-moving goddess of speech had instructed.
Verse 2 (skanda.2.59.2)
evaṁ dinedine yāte divyagaṁdho'nubhūyate pārijātaprasūnānāṁ vṛṣṭirmartyeṣu durlabhā
Thus, as day followed day, a divine fragrance was felt; a rain of parijata blossoms fell, a thing rare among mortals.
Verse 3 (skanda.2.59.3)
divyasaṁgītanādaśca gītāni rucirāṇi ca svargaṁgājalavṛṣṭiśca sūkṣmabiṁdusuśobhanā
Divine musical sounds and lovely songs were heard, and there fell a shower of the celestial Ganga's waters, beautiful in its fine droplets.
Verse 4 (skanda.2.59.4)
airāvatādināgānāṁ madagaṁdho vanadvipaiḥ duḥsahaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ sukhakāryanubhūyate
The rut-scent of Airavata and other tuskers, and of forest elephants — unbearable to all beings elsewhere — was here experienced as a source of joy.
Verse 5 (skanda.2.59.5)
yajñārthamāgatā devāste sarve vigatajvarāḥ āvirbhūtaṁ hariṁ dṛṣṭvā upāsāṁcakrire dvijāḥ
The gods who had come for the sacrifice, all their afflictions gone, seeing Hari made manifest, took to worshipping him, O Brahmins.
Verse 6 (skanda.2.59.6)
yathā hi mādhavaṁ pūrvaṁ tathā taṁ viṣṇuśākhinam upāsanāsu devānāṁ divyacihnāni jajñire
Just as Madhava had been worshipped before, so now was that tree of Vishnu; in the gods' acts of worship, divine signs began to appear.
Verse 7 (skanda.2.59.7)
nirvavāha svayaṁ devaḥ kramātpaṁcadaśe dine caturmūrtiḥ sa bhagavānyathā pūrvaṁ mayoditaḥ
The god himself brought the work to completion, in due course, on the fifteenth day — the Lord, four-formed, exactly as I had described before.
Verse 8 (skanda.2.59.8)
tādṛgāvirbabhūvāsau yuṣmākaṁ varṇitaḥ purā divyasiṁhāsanagato balabhadrāsudarśanaiḥ
He appeared exactly as described to you earlier, seated upon the divine throne together with Balabhadra and Sudarshana,
Verse 9 (skanda.2.59.9)
śaṁkhacakragadāpadmalasadbāhurjanārdanaḥ gadāmusalacakrābjaṁ dhārayanpannagākṛtiḥ
Janardana, his arms gleaming with conch, discus, mace and lotus; and, in serpent form, holding the mace, plough-club, discus and lotus,
Verse 10 (skanda.2.59.10)
chatrākṛtiphaṇāsaptamukuṭojjvalakuṁḍalaḥ subhadrā cāruvadanā varābjābhayadhāriṇī
his seven hoods spread like a canopy, resplendent with crown and earrings; and Subhadra, of lovely face, holding the boon-gesture, the lotus, and the gesture of fearlessness,
Verse 11 (skanda.2.59.11)
lakṣmīḥ prādurbabhūveyaṁ sarvacaitanyarūpiṇī iyaṁ kṛṣṇāvatāre hi rohiṇīgarbhasaṁbhavā
this Lakshmi appeared, the very embodiment of universal consciousness; in the Krishna incarnation she had been born of Rohini's womb,
Verse 12 (skanda.2.59.12)
balabhadrākṛtirjātā balarūpasya ciṁtanāt kṣaṇaṁ na sahate sā hi moktuṁ līlāvatāriṇam
taking the form of Balabhadra through contemplation of the form of strength itself; for she cannot bear, even for an instant, to part from him who has descended in play.
Verse 13 (skanda.2.59.13)
There is, O Brahmins, truly no difference here between Krishna and Bala; being born of a single womb, the distinction is only a matter of worldly convention.
Verse 14 (skanda.2.59.14)
bhaginī baladevasyetyeṣā paurāṇikī kathā puṁrūpe strīsvarūpeṇa lakṣmīḥ sarvatra tiṣṭhati
"She is Baladeva's sister" — this is the tale given in the Puranas; but Lakshmi, whether in male form or female, abides everywhere the same.
Verse 15 (skanda.2.59.15)
puṁnāmnā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ strīnāmnā kamalālayā devatiryaṅmanuṣyādau vidyate na tayoḥ param
Under the male name he is the Lord Vishnu; under the female name she who dwells in the lotus. Among gods, beasts, humans and the rest, there is nothing beyond these two.
Verse 16 (skanda.2.59.16)
ko hyanyaḥ puṁḍarīkākṣādbhuvanāni caturdaśa dhārayettu phaṇāgreṇa so'naṁto balasaṁjñitaḥ
For who but the lotus-eyed one could bear the fourteen worlds upon the tip of his hood? He is that Ananta, called by the name Bala.
Verse 17 (skanda.2.59.17)
tasya śaktisvarūpeyaṁ bhaginī śrīḥ prakīrtitā sudarśanaṁ tu yaccakraṁ sadā viṣṇoḥ kare sthitam
This "sister," proclaimed as Shri, is the very form of his power; and that discus called Sudarshana, ever resting in Vishnu's hand —
Verse 18 (skanda.2.59.18)
śākhāgrastaṁbhamadhyasthaṁ tadrūpaṁ tatturīyakam evaṁ tu mūrttayastena catasro vai prakāśitāḥ
— stands at the top of the branch, amid the pillar, as that fourth form. Thus, in this way, four forms were manifested by him.
Verse 19 (skanda.2.59.19)
nirvṛtte bhagavadrūpe caturddhā divyarūpiṇi lokānāmupakārāya punarāhāṁtarikṣagā
When the Lord's fourfold divine form was completed, the sky-moving voice spoke again, for the good of the worlds:
Verse 20 (skanda.2.59.20)
paṭairācchādya sudṛḍhaṁ nṛpate pratimāstvimāḥ svaṁ svaṁ varṇaṁ prāpayāśu varṇakaiścitrakarmaṇā
"O king, having firmly covered these images with cloth, quickly give each its own color through the craft of painting."
Verse 21 (skanda.2.59.21)
nīlābhraśyāmalaṁ viṣṇuṁ śaṁkheṁdudhavalaṁ balam raktaṁ sudarśanaṁ cakraṁ subhadrāṁ kuṁkumāruṇām
"Vishnu dark as a blue cloud, Bala white as conch and moon, the Sudarshana discus red, Subhadra saffron-red —
Verse 22 (skanda.2.59.22)
nānālaṁkārarucirāṁ nānābhaṁgivibhāgaśaḥ amī dārusvarūpeṇa dṛṣṭāḥ pāpāya hetave
"— lovely with various ornaments, arranged in various postures. Seen in this raw wooden form, they become a cause of sin."
Verse 23 (skanda.2.59.23)
gopanīyā prayatnena paṭaniryāsavalkalaiḥ tasmātprathamamevaitāṁstarorevāsya valkalaiḥ
"They must be carefully concealed with cloth, resin and bark; therefore first of all, with the bark of this very tree,
Verse 24 (skanda.2.59.24)
śilpibhiḥ karmakuśalairdṛḍhamācchādayāgrataḥ varṣe varṣe ca saṁskāryāḥ pūrvasaṁskāra mocanāt
"— let them first be firmly covered by craftsmen skilled in their work, and, removing the earlier coating, let them be renewed year after year."
Verse 25 (skanda.2.59.25)
ṛte valkalalepaṁ tu sa tu divyaściraṁtanaḥ pramādādya imaṁ lepamapanīyeta kaścana
"Without the bark-coating that ancient divine form is exposed; whoever, through carelessness, should remove this coating,
Verse 26 (skanda.2.59.26)
durbhikṣaṁ marakaṁ rāṣṭre saṁtatiścāsya hīyate nekṣitavyāstvayā rājankadācidapavāraṇāḥ
"— brings famine and pestilence upon the kingdom, and his own line dwindles. You, O king, must never look upon them uncovered."
Verse 27 (skanda.2.59.27)
manuṣyaiścāpi rājeṁdra dṛṣṭāḥ syurbhayahetavaḥ tasmātsacitrā draṣṭavyā bahulepavilepitāḥ
"And if seen by ordinary men, O lord of kings, they become a cause of terror; therefore they should be seen only when painted and coated with many layers,
Verse 28 (skanda.2.59.28)
sucitraṁ puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ savilāsaṁ savibhramam dṛṣṭvā vimucyate pāpaiḥ kalpakoṭisamudbhavaiḥ
"— for, seeing the lotus-eyed one beautifully painted, graceful and charming, one is freed from sins accumulated over tens of millions of aeons."
Verse 29 (skanda.2.59.29)
sucitrānkuru rājeṁdra citrānkāmānavāpsyati āvirbabhūva bhagavāṁstavānugrahakāmyayā
"Make them beautifully painted, O lord of kings; thereby desired wishes shall be obtained. The Lord has manifested out of his wish to show grace to you.
Verse 30 (skanda.2.59.30)
tava prasādājjaṁtūnāṁ caturvargaṁ pradāsyati nīlādrau kalpavṛkṣasya vāyavyāṁ śatahastataḥ
"— through your grace he shall grant all beings the four ends of life. On the Blue Mountain, to the northwest of the wish-fulfilling tree, a hundred cubits away,
Verse 31 (skanda.2.59.31)
pradeśe sumahatsthāne prāsādaṁ sudṛḍhāyatam uttare narasiṁhasya sahasrakaramucchritam
"— in that very great place, build a firm and spacious temple, north of Narasimha's shrine, rising a thousand hands high,
Verse 32 (skanda.2.59.32)
kārayitvā pratiṣṭhāpya tatrainaṁ viniveśaya purā sthitaṁ parvate'sminyo'bhyarcayati mādhavam
"— and, having had it built and consecrated, install him there. He who dwelt on this mountain of old and worshipped Madhava,
Verse 33 (skanda.2.59.33)
nāmnā viśvāvasurnāma śabaro vaiṣṇavottamaḥ purodhasaḥ sakhyamāsīttena sārddhaṁ purā ca te
"— named Vishvavasu, a Shabara hunter foremost among Vaishnavas — your priest had, in ancient times, a friendship with him.
Verse 34 (skanda.2.59.34)
tayoḥ saṁtatirevāsya lepasaṁskārakarmaṇi niyujyatāṁ mahārāja bhaviṣyatsūtsaveṣu ca
"Let the descendants of those two, O great king, be appointed to this task of coating and renewal, and to the festivals yet to come."
Verse 35 (skanda.2.59.35)
virarāmaitadābhāṣya sā tu divyā sarasvatī tayopadiṣṭamākarṇya prahṛṣṭenāṁtarātmanā
Having said this, that divine Sarasvati fell silent; and, having heard her instruction, with an inwardly delighted heart,
Verse 36 (skanda.2.59.36)
veṣṭanaṁ mocayāmāsa mahāvedyā nṛpottamaḥ dadṛśuste tadā sarve ratnasiṁhāsane sthitam
the best of kings removed the covering from the great altar; and then all beheld, seated upon the jeweled throne —
Verse 37 (skanda.2.59.37)

his face smiling with compassion, his chest raised broad and high, the Lord able to lift up the wretched, his long arms like a protecting cage,
Verse 39 (skanda.2.59.39)
prabuddhapuṇḍarīkākṣaṁ hāsaśoṇāyatādharam paśyatāṁ dṛṣṭimātreṇa hartāraṁ pāpasaṁcayam
his lotus-eyes wide open, his lower lip long and reddened with his smile, one whose mere sight takes away the accumulated sins of those who behold him —

his circle of hoods spread wide, his eyes as though rolling with wine, the king of serpents raised up, his chest full and broad,
Verse 43 (skanda.2.59.43)

his back slightly bent, his form coiled like a ring, his shoulders spread wide above, as though it were the very peak of Kailasa,

holding the plough, discus, lotus and club, garlanded with forest flowers, resplendent with necklace, earrings, armlets and crown.
Verse 45 (skanda.2.59.45)
tayormadhye sthitāṁ lakṣmīṁ subhadrāṁ bhadrarūpiṇīm
Lakshmi, standing between the two of them, in the form of Subhadra, the very embodiment of all that is auspicious,
Verse 46 (skanda.2.59.46)
sarvadevāraṇīṁ pāpasāgarottārakāriṇīm vikacāṁbhojavadanāṁ varābjābhayadhāriṇīm
the very source of all the gods, she who ferries one across the ocean of sin, her face like a blossoming lotus, holding the boon-lotus and the gesture of fearlessness,
Verse 47 (skanda.2.59.47)
rūpalāvaṇyavasatiṁ śobhamānāṁ prasādhanaiḥ kuṁkumāruṇadehāṁ tāṁ sākṣāllakṣmīmivāparām
the very abode of beauty and grace, resplendent with adornments, her body reddened like saffron, as though another Lakshmi in person —
Verse 48 (skanda.2.59.48)

dadarśa viṣṇorvāmasthāṁ cakraśākhāgranirmitām bālārkasadṛśīṁ tīkṣṇadhārāṁ tejomayīṁ dvijāḥ
they saw her standing at Vishnu's left; and they saw the discus too, fashioned at the tip of the branch, resembling the newly risen sun, sharp-edged and full of splendor, O Brahmins.
Verse 49 (skanda.2.59.49)
tāṁ dṛṣṭvānandapāthodhi nimagnaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ kartavyamūḍhaḥ svatanau svayaṁ na prababhūva ha
Seeing this, the lord of the earth was plunged into an ocean of bliss; bewildered as to what he should do, he was no longer even master of his own body.
Verse 50 (skanda.2.59.50)
daramīlitanetraḥ sansṛjanbāṣpāṁbu kevalam kṛtāṁjalipuṭastasthau sthūṇākāro nṛpottamaḥ
With eyes half-closed, shedding only a stream of tears, the best of kings stood with joined palms, motionless as a pillar.

"— Hari, an ocean of grace toward his devotees, a treasury of all knowledge, whom yogis with disciplined minds forever strive to see,
Verse 54 (skanda.2.59.54)
avadhānena mahatā kṣaṇaṁ paśyanti mānavāḥ so'yaṁ dārumayaṁ dehaṁ samāsthāya janārdanaḥ
"— whom men, with the utmost care, glimpse but for an instant. That very Janardana, having taken up this wooden body,
Verse 55 (skanda.2.59.55)

"— has come, O king, directly within your sight, in order to show you grace. Worship this lord of the earth; praise this ocean of compassion —
Verse 56 (skanda.2.59.56)
dadāti saṁstutaḥ kāmānsarvānnṛpa manogatān
"— for, O king, once praised, he grants all the desires that dwell within the heart."
