jaiminiruvāca itthaṁ prabodhitastena nāradena kṣitīśvaraḥ tuṣṭāva jagatāṁ nāthaṁ vacobhiḥ karuṇānvitam

Jaimini said: Thus instructed by Narada, the lord of the earth praised the Lord of the worlds with words full of humility and feeling.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.60.2)

indradyumna uvāca tvadaṁghripāthojayugaṁ murāre nopāsitaṁ janmasu pūrvajeṣu tatkarmaṇāṁ dāruṇapākabhājaṁ dīnaṁ paritrāhi kṛpāṁbudhe mām

Indradyumna said: "O Murari, in my former births I did not worship your lotus-feet; subject now to the harsh ripening of those very deeds, wretched, save me, O ocean of compassion."

Verse 3 (skanda.2.60.3)

kva nirmalaṁ tvaccaraṇābjayugmaṁ viriṁcirudreṁdrakirīṭamagnam kvāhaṁ kudīnaḥ śakṛdasramāṁsamūtrāsthisaṁghaiḥ pihitastvacā vai

"Where is your spotless pair of lotus-feet, sunk in the crowns of Brahma, Rudra and Indra? And where am I, most wretched, covered by mere skin over a mass of filth, blood, flesh, urine and bone!"

Verse 4 (skanda.2.60.4)

asārasaṁsāraparibhrameṇa śramāturastvāṁ kathamīśa jāne jānaṁti te tvāṁ khalu devadeva yeṣāṁ bhavo duḥkhabhavaprakāśaḥ

"Wearied by wandering through this substanceless world, how, O Lord, should I know you? O God of gods, truly only those know you for whom worldly existence has revealed itself as sorrow."

Verse 5 (skanda.2.60.5)

prabho mayā duḥkhamanekajanmapāpārjitaṁ bhuktamanekabhāvam śubhārjito yaḥ sukhaleśabhāvo nidarśanaṁ yanmadhupṛktatikte

"O Lord, by me has been endured the suffering earned through the sins of many births, in many forms; whatever fragment of happiness merit has brought is but an instance of honey smeared on something bitter."

Verse 6 (skanda.2.60.6)

yadeva saukhyānubhavāya deva karmārjito me viṣayopabhogaḥ sa eva duḥkhaṁ pariṇāmato me na madvidho duḥkhijano'sti cānyaḥ

"O God, that very enjoyment of the senses, earned by my deeds for the sake of pleasure, itself turns into sorrow for me in the end; there is no other sufferer like me."

Verse 7 (skanda.2.60.7)

vibho yadi tvāṁ manasāpi pūrvamupāstamanyadviṣamekṣaṇo'ham kathaṁ tadālapsyamanekajanma punaḥ punarbhogyamaśeṣaduḥkham

"O Lord, had I even in mind worshipped you before, my eye turned to nothing else, how then would I have obtained this endless suffering, to be endured again and again through countless births?"

Verse 8 (skanda.2.60.8)

vibhutvadāsatvapitṛtvaputrapriyatvamātṛtvadhanitvabhāvaiḥ vadhyatvahiṁsratvapatitvajāyābhāvaiśca tiryaktvasurādibhāvaiḥ

"Through the conditions of being lord, servant, father, son, beloved, mother, wealthy; through being slain, being a slayer, husband, wife; and through the states of beast, demon, and the rest —"

Verse 9 (skanda.2.60.9)

nīcorddhabhāvaṁ bahuśaḥ sakṛdvā bhavāṁgaṇe'smiṁnluṭhatānubhūtam na vā murāre tava pādapadmadūrībhavasyeṣṭaphalaṁ hi caitat

"— high and low states, many times or even once, I have known, rolling about in this arena of samsara; and this, O Murari, is indeed the desired fruit of remaining far from your lotus-feet."

Verse 10 (skanda.2.60.10)

"This treasury and this army, encircled by the wealth of the whole earth; youth and beauty, hundreds of women pleasing to the mind, and my kingdom of vassal-kings free of every thorn —"

Verse 11 (skanda.2.60.11)

sāmrājyatā cāpi bharo mahānme tvajjñānahīsya paśorivāyam bhārāvatāraṁ kuru me kṛpābdhe sadaiva tatrodita khedayogaḥ

"— and this sovereignty too is, for me who lack knowledge of you, but a burden, like that of a beast of burden. Remove this weight from me, O ocean of compassion, for in it sorrow is ever rising."

Verse 12 (skanda.2.60.12)

dīnānukaṁpinkariṇo vimuktiḥ kṛtā vibho tvatsmṛtimātrakeṇa bhrāṁtaṁ ghaṭīyaṁtravadatra nātha māṁ trātumarhasyanukaṁpibhāvāt

"O you who are compassionate to the wretched, you granted freedom to the elephant Gajendra by the mere remembrance of you; O Lord, it is fitting that you save me too, wandering here like a water-wheel, out of that same compassionate nature."

Verse 13 (skanda.2.60.13)

na me tvadanyaḥ khalu bandhuratra pravāhavibhraṣṭatarusvabhāve pāpīyasī buddhirupetabhāvā snehānubandhā viṣaye'bhibhedyā

"I have, in truth, no kinsman here other than you, where my nature is like a tree swept away by the current; my sinful mind, bound by ties of affection, remains vulnerable to sense-objects."

Verse 14 (skanda.2.60.14)

aharniśaṁ me tava pādapadmānnāpaitu matprārthitametadeva tvāṁ saccidānaṁdasupūrṇasiṁdhuṁ prāptāstu ye janmasahasrabhāgyaiḥ

"Day and night let this mind of mine not depart from your lotus-feet — this alone is my prayer; you, the full ocean of being-consciousness-bliss, are attained only by those whose fortune spans a thousand births."

Verse 15 (skanda.2.60.15)

kiṁ te hi paśyaṁti lavaikasaukhyamanekaduḥkhaṁ viṣayendrajālam kva bandhanaṁ karmabhiriṣṭaleśaduḥkhākaragraṁthiśatairabhedyam

"Do they even truly see this net of sense-objects — a moment's pleasure amid manifold suffering? Where indeed is this bondage of deeds, unbreakable by its hundred knots that are but mines of sorrow with a trace of desired joy?"

Verse 16 (skanda.2.60.16)

anaṁtamādyaṁtavihīnamekamānaṁdadaṁ tvatpadapaṁkajaṁ kva māyāṁbudhau te mamatā bhramau ca kukarmanakrāyitagartamadhye

"Where is your lotus-foot — endless, without beginning or end, one, giver of bliss? And where is this ocean of your maya, amid delusion and possessiveness, in a pit made of crocodile-like evil deeds?"

Verse 17 (skanda.2.60.17)

nirāśrayaṁ me patitaṁ vilāsakaṭākṣapātena nayādya tīram svakāryasaṁsādhanayāśritānāṁ saṁpādanāyeṣṭavidherajasram

"Refugeless and fallen, lead me today to the shore with a single glance of your playful sidelong look — as is your ceaseless way of accomplishing the ends of those who take refuge in you."

Verse 18 (skanda.2.60.18)

bhrāmyaṁtamātmīyahitaṁ visṛjya māṁ trāhi mūḍhaṁ sahajānukaṁpin kṣudrāya kāryāya bahu bhramaṁtamaprāpya mūlaṁ parameśvaraṁ tvām

"Save me, deluded, wandering, having forsaken my own true good, O you whose compassion is innate; wandering far and wide for petty ends, without having attained you, the root, the Supreme Lord."

Verse 19 (skanda.2.60.19)

"Om. Save me, a vessel of utmost weariness, most wretched, O Vishnu, sole object of the universe's homage; O imperishable one known through Vedanta, Lord of the universe, you alone have power to destroy this whole mass of accumulated sin."

Verse 20 (skanda.2.60.20)

taṁ tvāṁ parityajya sukhaikahetuṁ kṣudrāśayaṁ māṁ paripāhi viṣṇo prasupta eṣo'khilabhūtasaṁghaścaturvidho yatkṛtamoharātrau

"Having forsaken you, the sole cause of happiness, protect me, of petty intent, O Vishnu; this whole fourfold host of beings lies asleep in this night of delusion, which you yourself have wrought."

Verse 21 (skanda.2.60.21)

tvajñānabhānūdayametya cāṁte prabodhyate tvāṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye tvameka evākhilalokakarttā phaṇāsahasraiḥ parivītamūrtiḥ

"— and in the end, awakened by the rising sun of knowledge of you, I take refuge in you. You alone are the creator of all the worlds, your form encircled by a thousand hoods."

Verse 22 (skanda.2.60.22)

paryāyavṛttyā balināṁ variṣṭha tvāmiśitāraṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye yayā sṛjasyatsi jagaṁti nātha vakṣaḥsarojāsanayā svaśaktyā

"I take refuge in you, ruler and best of the mighty, who by turns create, sustain, and destroy; by whose own power, seated as the lotus upon your chest, O Lord, you create the worlds,"

Verse 23 (skanda.2.60.23)

tāṁ bhadrarūpāṁ jagadāśrayāṁ te devāraṇiṁ pādayuge nato'smi yadaṁśujālapratisṛṣṭametadbrahmāṁḍajālaṁ karasaṁgi nātha

"— to her, of auspicious form, refuge of the worlds, your kindling-source of the gods, I bow at your pair of feet; by whose network of rays this whole web of universes is projected, ever held within your hand, O Lord."

Verse 24 (skanda.2.60.24)

sudarśanaṁ daityabalasya haṁtṛ cakrābhidhaṁ tvāṁ praṇataḥ sudarśanam stutvetthaṁ nṛpatiśreṣṭhaḥ sāṣṭāṁga praṇanāma saḥ

"To you, Sudarshana, destroyer of the demons' host, called the discus, of fair aspect, bowed, I offer homage." Having praised him thus, that best of kings prostrated with all eight limbs touching the ground.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.60.25)

paritrāhi jagannātha magnaṁ saṁsārasāgare anāthabandho kṛpayā dīnaṁ māṁ tamasākulam

"Save me, O Lord of the universe, sunk in the ocean of samsara. O friend of the friendless, out of compassion save me, wretched and overwhelmed by darkness."

Verse 26 (skanda.2.60.26)

Narada said: "Glory, glory to you, O Narayana, wholly devoted to ferrying beings across the boundless ocean of existence; O divine reality contemplated by the foremost of yogis, Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and the rest; you who, through the play of your own maya, transform the whole host of created beings; embodiment of the three principles, bearer of the triple staff, extolled through the three Nachiketa-fires, the three Madhu-rites, and the three chants of divine knowledge sung by the Suparnas, the very substance of the Vedic hymns; beloved of your own mount, beloved of your devotees, uniquely tender toward your devoted people; you whose true form is veiled within the web of your own maya; O universal form, universal light, facing every direction, eyed in every direction, hearing in every direction, whose feet, head, neck, hands, nose, tongue, skin, and every hair face every direction; the very self of all the worlds, bringer of happiness to all the worlds, benefactor of all the worlds, saluted by all the worlds; from whom, in the sport of your play, ten million lotuses have arisen; O guru of the three worlds, before whom Rudra, Indra, the Maruts, the Ashvins, the Sadhyas and the hosts of the Siddhas, and all gods and demons together, bow down; known to no one's understanding — salutations to you, salutations to you!"

Verse 27 (skanda.2.60.27)

jaiminiruvāca anye ca ye nṛpatayaḥ śrotriyā vedapāragāḥ munayo dvijāḥ kṣatriyāśca vidvāṁso vaiśyajātayaḥ

Jaimini said: And the other kings, the learned in the Vedas who had mastered them fully, the sages, the Brahmins, the kshatriyas, and the learned ones born in vaishya families,

Verse 28 (skanda.2.60.28)

astuvanpuṇḍarīkākṣaṁ balinaṁ bhadrayā saha sūktaiḥ stotraiḥ purāṇaiśca kavitābhiryathā tathā

— praised the lotus-eyed Lord, together with Bala and Bhadra, each in his own way, with Vedic hymns, eulogies, Puranic verses, and poetic compositions.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.60.29)

atheṁdradyumnaḥ provāca purodhasamakalmaṣam pūjārthaṁ vāsudevasya upacāropasaṁskṛtam

Then Indradyumna spoke to his sinless priest, so that, for the worship of Vasudeva, all things might be readied, furnished with every offering.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.60.30)

svayaṁ sa nṛpatiśreṣṭhaḥ pūjayāmāsa tānkramāt nāradasyopadeśena vidhinā maṁtratastathā

That best of kings himself, by Narada's instruction, worshipped them one by one, in due order, with proper ritual and with the appropriate mantras.

Verse 31 (skanda.2.60.31)

dvādaśākṣaramaṁtreṇa balabhadramapūjayat yamupāsya dhruvaḥ sthānaṁ prāptavānuttamottamam

With the twelve-syllabled mantra he worshipped Balabhadra, by worshipping whom Dhruva had attained that most exalted, unmoving station.

Verse 32 (skanda.2.60.32)

trayīprasiddhaṁ yatsūktaṁ pāvanaṁ pauruṣaṁ mahat tena nārāyaṇaṁ bhūpaḥ pūjayāmāsa śaktitaḥ

With that hymn famed throughout the three Vedas, pure and great — the Purusha-sukta — the king worshipped Narayana to the full extent of his power.

Verse 33 (skanda.2.60.33)

devyāḥ sūktena bhadrāṁ tāṁ saudarśanyā sudarśanam yathāsamṛddhi bhaktyā tānpūjayitvā nṛpottamaḥ

With the Devi-sukta he worshipped that Bhadra, and with the Saudarshani hymn, Sudarshana. Having thus worshipped them all, according to his ample means and with devotion, that best of kings —

Verse 34 (skanda.2.60.34)

tatprītyai dvijamukhyebhyo dadau dānāni bhaktitaḥ tulāpuruṣadānāni mahādānāni pārthivaḥ

— for their pleasure, gave gifts to the foremost Brahmins with devotion; the king gave the Tulapurusha gift and other great gifts.

Verse 35 (skanda.2.60.35)

aśvamedhāṁgabhūtāśca koṭiśo gā dadau tadā alaṁkṛtāstathānyāśca dadau gā bahudakṣiṇāḥ

As part of the horse-sacrifice's rites he then gave tens of millions of cows; and he gave, besides, other cows adorned with ornaments, together with ample fees.

Verse 36 (skanda.2.60.36)

tāsāṁ khuroddhṛteryogādgartobhūddvijasattamāḥ dānāṁbunā sa pūrṇo vai tīrthamāsīnmahāphalam

From the hollow raised by their hoofs a pit was formed, O best of Brahmins; filled with the water of the gift-libations, it became a bathing-place of great merit.

Verse 37 (skanda.2.60.37)

tasminsnātvā pitṝndevānsaṁtarpya vidhivannaraḥ aśvamedhasahasrasya phalamāpnotyasaṁśayaḥ

Bathing in it and duly offering libations to the ancestors and the gods, a man obtains, without doubt, the fruit of a thousand horse-sacrifices.

Verse 38 (skanda.2.60.38)

nāmnā khyātaṁ sarastasya indradyumnasya bhūpateḥ nirvapatyatra piṁḍāṁśca pitṝnuddiśya mānavaḥ

That lake, known by the name of King Indradyumna — the man who there offers rice-balls in honor of his ancestors,

Verse 39 (skanda.2.60.39)

kulaikaviṁśamuddhatya brahmaloke mahīyate nātaḥ parataraṁ tīrthaṁ hayamedhāṁgasaṁbhavāt

— lifts up twenty-one generations of his lineage and is exalted in the world of Brahma; having arisen as a limb of the horse-sacrifice, there is no sacred ford greater than this.

Verse 40 (skanda.2.60.40)

indradyumnasya sarasaḥ syādvā tripathagā samā tataḥ prāsādaghaṭanāmupacakrāma bhūpatiḥ

The lake of Indradyumna may well be equal to the Ganga, the river of the triple path. After this the king took up the building of the temple.

Verse 41 (skanda.2.60.41)

śubhe kāle sunakṣatre daivajñavidhicodite samuhūrte nāradādīnbrāhmaṇāgryānprapūjya ca

At an auspicious time, under a good constellation, following the astrologers' prescribed rule, at the fitting moment, having worshipped Narada and the other foremost Brahmins,

Verse 42 (skanda.2.60.42)

svastivācaṁ ca karmarddhiṁ vācayitvā nṛpottamaḥ arghyaṁ dadau jagannāthaṁ smaranprāsādaveśmani

— and, having had the benediction and prosperity-rites recited, the best of kings, remembering Jagannatha, offered the arghya at the temple's founding.

Verse 43 (skanda.2.60.43)

vasudhāṁ prārthayitvā tu sthānamācaṁdratārakam śilpinaḥ pūjayāmāsa vāstuyāgapuraḥsaram

Having entreated the earth for that ground to remain his as long as sun, moon and stars endure, he worshipped the craftsmen, the Vastu-sacrifice going before.

Verse 44 (skanda.2.60.44)

mahotsavaṁ tathā cakre gītavādyaiḥ prabhūtakaiḥ dīnānāthavipannebhyo dadau vastu yathepsitam

He held a great festival too, filled with song and music; and he gave to the poor, the helpless, and the distressed whatever goods they desired.

Verse 45 (skanda.2.60.45)

rājño visarjayāmāsa bahumānapuraḥsaram kṛtārthānavatāraṁ taṁ harerdṛṣṭvā hatāṁhasaḥ

He sent the kings home with great honor, who, having seen this fulfilling incarnation of Hari, had become free of sin and felt themselves accomplished.

Verse 46 (skanda.2.60.46)

tataḥ sa koṭiśo vittaṁ dadau pāṣāṇadārake āhṛtau bahudeśebhyo dṛṣadāṁ pārthivottamaḥ
