Chapter 86All chaptersChapter 88

Verse 1 (skanda.2.87.1)

munaya ūcuḥ bhagavansarvaśāstrajña śrutaṁ paramamadbhutam yātrārūpaṁ bhagavato māhātmyaṁ pāpanāśanam

The sages said: O Lord, all-knowing in every scripture, we have heard the supreme and wondrous glory of the Lord, in the form of the pilgrimage, which destroys sin.

Verse 2 (skanda.2.87.2)

yathāhaṁ pūjito devaḥ kāmibhiḥ sarvakāmadaḥ bhūtyupāsanayā bhūtiprado brūhi tathā hi naḥ

As I, worshipped by those with desires, become one who grants every desire, tell us likewise how he grants prosperity through the worship of prosperity.

Verse 3 (skanda.2.87.3)

jaiminiruvāca sarvā vibhūtayo viṣṇorjagatyasmiṁścarācarāḥ bhūtiprado vibhūtiśca sa ekaḥ parameśvaraḥ

Jaimini said: All the manifestations in this world, moving and unmoving, are Vishnu's; he alone, the Supreme Lord, is both the giver of prosperity and prosperity itself.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.87.4)

yathāyathopa carati tathā vai jāyate naraḥ etāvadasya mahimā parimātuṁ na śakyate

As one approaches him, so a man becomes; his greatness is such that it cannot be measured.

Verse 5 (skanda.2.87.5)

yo yathā samupāste taṁ tathā vai phalamāpnuyāt ekaḥ paṁthāścaturṇāṁ vai dharmādīnāṁ sa dāravaḥ

As one worships him, so one obtains the fruit accordingly; he is the single path for the four goals of life beginning with dharma — that image of wood.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.87.6)

dharmasya pathā gahanaḥ saṁkīrṇo vahuśāsanaiḥ tattvāvadhāraṇe nāsya kṣamaḥ ko'pi dvijottamāḥ

The path of dharma is deep, crowded with many teachings; none, O best of brahmins, is able to fully determine its true nature.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.87.7)

arthakāmau hi tanmūlāvitthaṁ sthūlagatī sadā teṣāṁ trayāṇāṁ bhagavānanāyāsena vṛddhikṛt

Artha and kama indeed have dharma as their root, and are always coarser paths; of these three, the Lord, without effort, is the one who brings increase.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.87.8)

dharmo hi bhagavānviṣṇurdharmamūlamidaṁ jagat dharmasya jagataścāpi prabhureṣa janārdanaḥ

For the Blessed Vishnu is dharma itself; this world has dharma as its root; and this Janardana is the lord of both dharma and the world.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.87.9)

He in whom devotion is established, amid this realm made of the goals of life, his soul satisfied with every desire, neither grieves nor craves.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.87.10)

trailokyaiśvaryadātāsau śakrarūpo hyupāsitaḥ bhāvito dhātṛrūpeṇa vaṁśavṛddhikaro hariḥ

Worshipped in the form of Indra, this same Hari bestows sovereignty over the three worlds; contemplated in the form of the Creator, he causes the increase of one's lineage.

Verse 11 (skanda.2.87.11)

sanatkumārarūpeṇa dīrghamāyuḥ prayacchati vṛttisaṁpatprado hyeṣa pṛthurūpeṇa bhāvitaḥ

In the form of Sanatkumara, he grants long life; contemplated in the form of Prithu, he grants prosperity of livelihood.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.87.12)

gaṅgāditīrthaphalado vācaspatirupāsitaḥ aṁtastamaḥ praṇudati bhāsvadrūpeṇa bhāvitaḥ

Worshipped as Brihaspati, he grants the fruit of the Ganga and other sacred waters; contemplated in the radiant form of the sun, he dispels the inner darkness.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.87.13)

saubhāgyamatulaṁ dadyādamṛtāṁśurupāsitaḥ vidyāṣṭādaśatattvajño vākpatitvena bhāvayan

Worshipped as the moon, he grants incomparable good fortune; contemplated as the Lord of Speech, knower of the eighteen branches of learning, he grants eloquence.

Verse 14 (skanda.2.87.14)

vājimedhādiyajñānāṁ phalado'yaṁ sanātanaḥ yajñeśvarasvarūpeṇa bhāvito'yaṁ jaganmayaḥ

This eternal one is the giver of the fruits of the horse-sacrifice and other sacrifices; contemplated in the form of the Lord of Sacrifice, he pervades the universe.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.87.15)

dhyātaḥ kuberarūpeṇa samṛddhimatulāṁ dadet

Meditated upon in the form of Kubera, he grants incomparable abundance.

Verse 16 (skanda.2.87.16)

evaṁ dayāṁbudhirasau tasminnīlācale vasan dīnānāthānugrahāya dāruvyājaśarīravān

Thus this ocean of compassion, dwelling on that Blue Mountain, bears a body under the guise of wood, for the blessing of the helpless and the poor.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.87.17)

prayāta tatra bho viprā vasadhvaṁ susamāhitāḥ śrīśapādābjayugalaṁ śaraṇaṁ tatprapadyata

Go there, O brahmins, and dwell there with full concentration; take refuge at the pair of lotus feet of the Husband of Shri.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.87.18)

aihikāmuṣmikānbhogānvāñchadhvaṁ yadi śāśvatān ante muktiṁ ca kaivalyāṁ yathecchaṁ tatra prāpnuta

If you desire enjoyments here and hereafter, even eternal ones, and at the end liberation and absolute oneness, attain them there, just as you wish.
