Indradyumna's Final Charge and the Fruit of Hearing this Glory

Chapter 87All chaptersChapter 89

Verse 1 (skanda.2.88.1)

munaya ūcuḥ prāsādasya pratiṣṭhāṁta indradyumnāya yadvarān ājñāpayāmāsa hariryātrāstā dvādaśāpi ca

The sages said: At the end of the temple's consecration, what boons did Hari command to Indradyumna, and what were the twelve pilgrimages he declared?

Verse 2 (skanda.2.88.2)

tvatsakāśācchutaṁ sarvaṁ tataḥ sa pṛthivīpatiḥ kiṁ cakāra mahābuddhirviṣṇubhakto'pyavasthitaḥ

Having heard all this from you, what then did that lord of the earth, that man of great wisdom, established as a devotee of Vishnu, do?

Verse 3 (skanda.2.88.3)

jaiminiruvāca varāṁllabdhvā jagannāthātsākṣādbrahmasvarūpiṇaḥ kṛtakṛtyaṁ sa mene vā ātmānaṁ narapuṁgavaḥ

Jaimini said: Having obtained these boons from Jagannatha, himself the very form of Brahman, that foremost of men deemed himself fulfilled.

Verse 4 (skanda.2.88.4)

yathājñaṁ kārayitvā vai yātrāstāḥ puṇyamokṣadāḥ bahūpacārairbahudhā samabhyarcya jagadgurum

Having caused those holy, liberation-bestowing pilgrimages to be performed just as commanded, and having worshipped the World-Teacher in many ways with abundant offerings,

Verse 5 (skanda.2.88.5)

gālarājaṁ samādiśya devasyājñāṁ yathāvidhi idaṁ provāca madhuraṁ dharmanyāyasamāyutam

he summoned King Gala, and, conveying the deity's command according to rite, spoke to him these sweet words, filled with righteousness and justice.

Verse 6 (skanda.2.88.6)

indradyumna uvāca rājanbahuśruto'si tvaṁ dharmaniṣṭhāmupāgataḥ bhagavatyapi bhaktiste karmaṇā manasā girā

Indradyumna said: 'O king, you are widely learned, and have attained steadfastness in dharma; your devotion to the Lord too is complete in deed, thought, and word.

Verse 7 (skanda.2.88.7)

na hyekasyopadaśāya bhagavānanuśāsti vai carācaragururhyeṣa viśvaṁ tacchiṣyatāṁ gatam

For the Lord does not govern for the instruction of a single person alone; he is indeed the teacher of all that moves and moves not, and the universe has become his disciple.

Verse 8 (skanda.2.88.8)

mamānugrahalakṣyeṇa avatīrṇo jagatpatiḥ uddhṛtyai dīnamanasāmatrāpi sthāsyate cirāt

For the sake of his grace upon me he has descended, to uplift the wretched in mind; here too he shall remain for a long time.

Verse 9 (skanda.2.88.9)

bhaktyā ca śraddhayā yukta etadājñāṁ pravarttaya pratimāvyavahāreṇa nainaṁ jānīhi bhūmipa

With devotion and faith, carry forward this command of his; do not think of him, O king, in terms of the mere handling of an image.

Verse 10 (skanda.2.88.10)

pratyakṣaṁ te yathā jātaṁ trailokyaṁ bhūmimāgatam prāsādāṁtaḥ praveśe hi yasyāsya jagadīśituḥ

As it was manifest before your very eyes, how the three worlds came together upon this earth, when this Lord of the world entered the temple —

Verse 11 (skanda.2.88.11)

pitāmahādyāstridaśāḥ sarve yugapadāgatāḥ viśvamūrtyā vayaṁ sarve jātā vai naṣṭacetanāḥ

the Grandsire and all the thirty gods, all arriving together, all of us, absorbed into the form of the universe, became as though bereft of consciousness.

Verse 12 (skanda.2.88.12)

carācaramayo hyeṣa sākṣāddārusvarūpadhṛk kalpavṛkṣamimaṁ viddhi bhūgataṁ sarvakāmadam

For he, consisting of all that moves and moves not, bears visibly a body in the form of wood; know this to be that very wish-fulfilling tree, come down to earth, granter of every desire.

Verse 13 (skanda.2.88.13)

upāsyainaṁ hi labhate yo yathā kāmanāphalam yataṁto bahudhā yaṁ hi yatayo na vidanti vai tamaḥpāre pratiṣṭhataṁ kiṁsvijjyotiḥ svarūpiṇam

By worshipping him, one obtains whatever fruit one desires, according to one's wish; him whom ascetics, striving in many ways, do not truly know — established beyond darkness, is he of the very nature of light?

Verse 14 (skanda.2.88.14)

yatīnāṁ dharmaniṣṭhānāṁ śuddhānāmūrdhvaretasām ananyabhaktiyuktānāmekaḥ paṁthāstu yoginām

For ascetics steadfast in dharma, pure, of upward-flowing seed, devoted to him alone with unwavering devotion — for such yogis there is but one path.

Verse 15 (skanda.2.88.15)

grīṣme śīta gabhīre vai nimajjya salilāśaye parāṁ nirvṛtimāpnoti tathāsminkaruṇāṁbudhau

As one who plunges into a deep, cool pool of water in summer obtains supreme relief, so too one who takes refuge in this ocean of compassion —

Verse 16 (skanda.2.88.16)

tritāpaduḥkhaṁ tyajati saṁprāpte puruṣottame

casts off the threefold suffering, once Purushottama is attained.

Verse 17 (skanda.2.88.17)

na mātā na pitā mitraṁ na patnī na sutastathā śaraṇāgatadīnānāṁ yathāyamupakārakaḥ

Neither mother, nor father, nor friend, nor wife, nor son, helps the helpless who take refuge as he does.

Verse 18 (skanda.2.88.18)

tadenaṁ parisevasva bhuktimuktiphalapradam pauraiḥ prajābhiryātrāstāḥ samṛddhaṁ parivarttaya

Therefore serve him, who bestows the fruit of both enjoyment and liberation; keep the pilgrimages flourishing, together with the citizens and the people.

Verse 19 (skanda.2.88.19)

sādhāraṇo dharmapaṁthā nṛpāṇāṁ nṛpasattama pravartitaśca pūrveṇa pālyate'naṁtareṇa saḥ

O best of kings, the common path of dharma for kings is set in motion by the one who came before, and is preserved by the one who follows.

Verse 20 (skanda.2.88.20)

nṛsiṁhaṁ bhaja rājeṁdra upacārairmaharddhibhiḥ pūjayasva trisaṁdhyaṁ taṁ paraṁ nirvāṇamāpnuhi

O king of kings, worship Nrisimha with rich and abundant ritual honours; worship him at the three daily junctures, and attain the supreme liberation.

Verse 21 (skanda.2.88.21)

svakṛtāduttamaṁ prāhuḥ parakṛtyoparakṣaṇam pālayetparadattaṁ yaḥ svadattāduttamaṁ hi tat

They say that guarding another's work is superior to one's own; whoever preserves what was entrusted by another does something more excellent than what he himself has given.'

Verse 22 (skanda.2.88.22)

jaiminiruvāca kṛtāṁjalipuṭaḥ so'tha śveto nṛpatisattamaḥ mūrdhni jagrāha tadvākyaṁ mālāmiva guṇānvitām

Jaimini said: Then Shveta, that foremost of kings, with hands folded, received those words upon his head, as though they were a garland strung with virtues.

Verse 23 (skanda.2.88.23)

iṁdradyumno'pi rājarṣiḥ prasādya puruṣottamam saha śrīmānbrahmalokaṁ jagāma ha

The royal sage Indradyumna too, having propitiated Purushottama, together with his glorious queen, went to the world of Brahma.

Verse 24 (skanda.2.88.24)

etadvaḥ kathitaṁ puṇyaṁ kṣetramāhātmyamuttamam tatra nityoṣitasyāpi māhātmyaṁ brahmadāruṇaḥ

This holy and supreme glory of the sacred field has been declared to you; the greatness of the wooden Brahman extends even to one who merely dwells there always.

Verse 25 (skanda.2.88.25)

yaścaitacchṛṇuyādbhaktyā vācyamānaṁ dvijottamāḥ aśvamedhasahasrasya phalaṁ so'vikalaṁ labhet

Whoever hears this, recited with devotion, O best of brahmins, obtains the complete fruit of a thousand horse-sacrifices.

Verse 26 (skanda.2.88.26)

arddhodayastu yo yogaḥ skaṁdena parikīrtitaḥ tatkoṭiguṇitaṁ puṇyaṁ viṣṇormāhātmyakīrtanāt

The conjunction called Ardhodaya, proclaimed by Skanda — its merit, multiplied ten million times, is obtained by the recitation of Vishnu's glory.

Verse 27 (skanda.2.88.27)

prātaḥ prātaryaḥ śṛṇuyātkapilāśatado bhavet gāṁgaiḥ puṣkarajaistoyairabhiṣekaphalaṁ labhet

Whoever hears it every single morning becomes as one who has given a hundred Kapila cows; he obtains the fruit of bathing in the waters of the Ganga and of Pushkara.

Verse 28 (skanda.2.88.28)

dhanyaṁ yaśasyamāyuṣyaṁ puṇyaṁ saṁtānavarddhanam svargapratiṣṭhāgatidaṁ sarvapāpāpanodanam

It brings prosperity, fame, and long life, is holy, increases one's progeny, grants the attainment of the station of heaven, and removes every sin.

Verse 29 (skanda.2.88.29)

etadrahasyamākhyātaṁ purāṇeṣu sugopitam vaiṣṇavebhyo vinā'nyeṣu na tu vācyaṁ kadācana

This mystery has been declared, closely guarded within the Puranas; it should never be told to any but Vaishnavas.

Verse 30 (skanda.2.88.30)

kutarkopahatā ye ca duradhītaśrutāgamāḥ nāstikā dāṁbhikā nityaṁ paradoṣopadarśinaḥ avaiṣṇavā moghajīvāstebhyo gopyaṁ sadaiva hi

Those afflicted by false reasoning, ill-versed in the Shrutis and Agamas, nihilists, hypocrites, ever intent on pointing out others' faults, non-Vaishnavas of futile life — from these it should ever be kept concealed.
