Brahma Khanda · Chapter 12
The Glory of Mangala Tirtha and King Manojava
Verse 1 (skanda.3.12.1)
śrīsūta uvāca sītākuṇḍe mahāpuṇye naraḥ snātvā dvijottamāḥ tatastu maṁgalaṁ tīrthamabhigacchetsamāhitaḥ
Shri Suta said: O foremost of brahmins, a man, having bathed at the greatly meritorious Sitakunda, should then proceed, with concentrated mind, to the ford Mangala.
Verse 2 (skanda.3.12.2)
sannidhatte sadā yatra kamalā viṣṇuvallabhā alakṣmīparihārāya yasminsarasi vai surāḥ
Where Kamala, beloved of Vishnu, is always present; and where, for the removal of misfortune, the gods —
Verse 3 (skanda.3.12.3)
śatakratumukhāḥ sarve samāgacchaṁti nityaśaḥ tadetattīrthamuddiśya ṛṣayo lokapāvanam
— headed by Indra, all continually assemble. Regarding that very ford, world-purifying, the sages —
Verse 4 (skanda.3.12.4)
itihāsaṁ pravakṣyāmi puṇyaṁ pāpavināśanam purā manojavo nāma rājā somakulodbhavaḥ
— asked, and I shall relate that meritorious, sin-destroying legend. Long ago there was a king named Manojava, born of the lunar dynasty,
Verse 5 (skanda.3.12.5)
pālayāmāsa dharmeṇa dharāṁ sāgaramekhalām ayaṣṭa sa surānyajñai rbrāhmaṇānannasaṁcayaiḥ
— who ruled righteously the earth girdled by the ocean. He worshipped the gods with sacrifices, and honored brahmins with abundant food.
Verse 6 (skanda.3.12.6)
tarpayāmāsa kavyena pratyabdaṁ pitṛdevatāḥ trayīmadhyaiṣṭa satatamapāṭhīcchāstramarthavat
Every year, he satisfied the ancestral deities with kavya offerings. He constantly studied the three Vedas, and he read the shastras with understanding.
Verse 7 (skanda.3.12.7)
vyajeṣṭa śatrūnvīryeṇa prāṇaṁ sīdīśakeśavau araṁsta nītiśāstreṣu tathāpāṭhīnmahāmanūn
He conquered his enemies through valor; he was devoted in his heart to Isha and Keshava; he delighted in the sciences of statecraft, and likewise studied the great law-codes.
Verse 8 (skanda.3.12.8)
evaṁ sa dharmato rājā pālayāmāsa medinīm rakṣatastasya rājño'bhūdrājyaṁ nihata kaṁṭakam
Thus that king righteously ruled the earth. As that king protected it, his kingdom became free of thorns.
Verse 9 (skanda.3.12.9)
ahaṁkāro'bhavattasya putrasaṁpadvināśanaḥ ahaṁkāro bhavedyatra tatra lobho madastathā
But then arose in him egotism, the destroyer of sons and prosperity. Wherever egotism arises, there greed and pride too arise,
Verse 10 (skanda.3.12.10)
kāmaḥ krodhaśca hiṁsā ca tathā'sūyā vimohinī bhavaṁtyetāni vipreṁdrāḥ saṁpadāṁ nāśahetavaḥ
— desire, anger, violence, and likewise bewildering envy. O foremost of brahmins, these become the causes of the destruction of prosperity.
Verse 11 (skanda.3.12.11)
etāni yatra vidyaṁte puruṣe sa vinaśyati kṣaṇena putrapautraiśca sārddhaṁ cākhilasaṁpadā
In whatever man these exist, he perishes in an instant, together with his sons, grandsons, and all his prosperity.
Verse 12 (skanda.3.12.12)
babhūva tasyāsūyā ca janavidveṣiṇī sadā asūyākulacittasya vṛthāhaṁkāriṇastathā
In him arose envy, ever hostile toward people. In him, whose mind was disturbed by envy, and who was vainly egotistical,
Verse 13 (skanda.3.12.13)
lubdhasya kāmaduṣṭasya matirevaṁ babhūva ha vipragrāme karādānaṁ kariṣyāmīti niścitaḥ
— greedy, corrupted by desire, thus his mind became resolved: "I shall levy a tax upon the brahmin villages."
Verse 14 (skanda.3.12.14)
akarocca tathā rājā niścitya manasā tadā dhanaṁ dhānyaṁ ca viprāṇāṁ jahāra kila lobhataḥ
And, having resolved this in his mind, the king did so; he seized, indeed, out of greed, the wealth and grain of the brahmins.
Verse 15 (skanda.3.12.15)
śivaviṣṇvādidevānāṁ vittānyādatta rāgataḥ śivaviṣṇvādidevānāṁ viprāṇāṁ ca mahātmanām
Out of passion, he seized the wealth belonging to Shiva, Vishnu, and the other gods; and of Shiva, Vishnu, and the other gods, and of great-souled brahmins —
Verse 16 (skanda.3.12.16)
kṣetrāṇyapajahārāyamahaṁkāra vimūḍhadhīḥ evamanyāyayuktasya devadvijavirodhinaḥ
— this king, his mind deluded by egotism, seized their sacred fields as well. Thus, of one given to injustice, hostile to gods and brahmins,
Verse 17 (skanda.3.12.17)
duṣkarmaparipākena krūreṇa dvijapuṁgavāḥ puraṁ rurodha balavānparadeśādhipo ripuḥ
— O foremost of brahmins, through the ripening of that cruel evil deed, a mighty lord of a foreign land, an enemy, besieged his city.
Verse 18 (skanda.3.12.18)
golabhonāma vipreṁdrāścaturaṁgabalairyutaḥ ṣaṇmāsaṁ yuddhamabhavadgolabhena durātmanaḥ
O foremost of brahmins, named Golabha, endowed with a fourfold army; for six months a war was waged with that evil-souled Golabha —
Verse 19 (skanda.3.12.19)
manojavasya nṛpaterahaṁkāraratātmanaḥ tataḥ sa golabhenājau jito rājyātparicyutaḥ
— of king Manojava, whose mind was devoted to egotism. Then he was defeated in that battle by Golabha, and cast down from his kingdom.
Verse 20 (skanda.3.12.20)
vanaṁ saputradāraḥ sanprapede sa manojavaḥ golabhaḥ pālayannāste manojavapure ciram
That Manojava, with his son and wife, then took refuge in the forest. Golabha remained ruling for a long time in Manojava's city.
Verse 21 (skanda.3.12.21)
caturaṁgabalopetastamudvāsya raṇe balī manojavopi vipreṁdrāḥ śocanstrīputrasaṁyutaḥ
O foremost of brahmins, that mighty one, endowed with a fourfold army, having driven him out in battle — Manojava too, grieving, with his wife and son,
Verse 22 (skanda.3.12.22)
kṣutkṣāmaḥ praskhalañchaśvatpraviveśa mahāvanam jhillikāgaṇasaṁghuṣṭaṁ vyāghraśvāpada bhīṣaṇam
— emaciated with hunger, constantly stumbling, entered a great forest, resounding with swarms of crickets, terrible with tigers and beasts of prey,
Verse 23 (skanda.3.12.23)
vyāptadviradacītkāraṁ varāhamahiṣākulam tasminvane mahāghore kṣudhayā paripīḍitaḥ
— pervaded by the trumpeting of elephants, crowded with boars and buffaloes. In that most terrible forest, tormented by hunger,
Verse 24 (skanda.3.12.24)
ayācatānnaṁ pitaraṁ manojavasutaḥ śiśuḥ aṁba mennaṁ prayaccha tvaṁ kṣudhā māṁ bādhate bhṛśam
Manojava's young son begged his father for food: "O mother, give me food; hunger torments me exceedingly."
Verse 25 (skanda.3.12.25)
evaṁ svajananīṁ cāpi prārthayāmāsa bālakaḥ tanmātāpitarau tatra śrutvā putrasya bhāṣitam
Thus the boy entreated his own mother too. There, his mother and father, hearing their son's words,
Verse 26 (skanda.3.12.26)
śokābhibhūtau sahasā mohaṁ samupajagmatuḥ bhāryāmathābravīdrājā sumitrānāma nāmataḥ
— overcome by grief, suddenly fell into a swoon. Then the king said to his wife, named Sumitra:
Verse 27 (skanda.3.12.27)
muhyamānaśca sa muhuḥ śuṣkakaṁṭhauṣṭhatālukaḥ sumitre kiṁ kariṣyāmi kutra yāsyāmi kā gatiḥ
— again and again falling into confusion, his throat, lips, and palate parched: "O Sumitra, what shall I do? Where shall I go? What is my recourse?
Verse 28 (skanda.3.12.28)
mariṣyatyacirādeṣa suto me kṣudhayārditaḥ kimarthaṁ sasṛje vedhā durbhāgyaṁ māṁ vṛthā priye
This son of mine, tormented by hunger, shall soon die. Why, O beloved, did the Creator create this unfortunate me in vain?
Verse 29 (skanda.3.12.29)
Who indeed shall release me from this sorrow, born of my own evil deeds? In my previous births I did not worship Shambhu or Hari,
Verse 30 (skanda.3.12.30)
tathānyā devatāḥ sūryavibhāvasumukhāḥ priye tena pāpena cādyāhamasmiñjanmani śobhane
— nor, O beloved, the other deities, headed by Surya and Vibhavasu (Agni). Because of that sin, O gracious one, I, in this present birth —
Verse 31 (skanda.3.12.31)
ahaṁkārābhibhūto'smi viprakṣetrāṇyapāharam śivaviṣṇvādidevānāṁ vittaṁ cāpahṛtaṁ mayā
— became overcome by egotism, and I seized the sacred fields of brahmins. I also seized the wealth belonging to Shiva, Vishnu, and the other gods.
Verse 32 (skanda.3.12.32)
evaṁ duṣkarmabāhulyādgolabhena parājitaḥ vanaṁ yātosmi vijanaṁ tvayā saha sutena ca
Thus, through the multitude of evil deeds, defeated by Golabha, I have come to this desolate forest, together with you and our son.
Verse 33 (skanda.3.12.33)
niranno nirdhano duḥkhī kṣudhito 'haṁ pipāsitaḥ kathamannaṁ pradāsyāmi kṣudhitāya sutāya me
Without food, without wealth, sorrowful, hungry, and thirsty am I — how shall I give food to my hungry son?
Verse 34 (skanda.3.12.34)
na mayānnāni dattāni brāhmaṇebhyaḥ śucismite na mayā pūjitaḥ śaṁbhurviṣṇurvā devatāṁtaram
O sweetly-smiling one, I never gave food to brahmins; I never worshipped Shambhu, Vishnu, or any other deity.
Verse 35 (skanda.3.12.35)
tena pāpena me tvadya duḥkhametatsamāgatam na mayāgnau hutaṁ pūrvaṁ na tīrthamapi sevitam
Because of that sin, this sorrow has come upon me today. I never before offered oblation into fire, nor did I ever visit a sacred ford.
Verse 36 (skanda.3.12.36)
mātṛśrāddhaṁ pitṛśrāddhaṁ mṛtāha divase tayoḥ naikoddiṣṭavidhānena pārvaṇenāpi vai priye
O beloved, on the day of their death, I never performed the shraddha of my mother or father, either by the ekoddishta rite or by the parvana rite.
Verse 37 (skanda.3.12.37)
kṛtaṁ na hi mayā bhadre bhūribhojanameva vā tena pāpena me tvadya duḥkhametatsamāgatam
Nor, O gracious one, did I ever perform a great feast-giving. Because of that sin, this sorrow has come upon me today.
Verse 38 (skanda.3.12.38)
caitramāse priye citrānakṣatre pānakaṁ mayā panasānāṁ phalaṁ svādu kadalīphalameva vā
O beloved, in the month of Chaitra, under the Chitra star, I never offered a cooling drink, nor the sweet fruit of the jackfruit, nor the plantain fruit,
Verse 39 (skanda.3.12.39)
tathā chatraṁ sadaṁḍaṁ ca ramyaṁ pādukayordvayam tāṁbūlāni ca puṣpāṇi caṁdanaṁ cānulepanam
— nor an umbrella with its staff, nor a lovely pair of sandals, nor betel leaves, nor flowers, nor sandal-paste unguent —
Verse 40 (skanda.3.12.40)
na dattaṁ vedavidbhyastu citraguptasya tuṣṭaye tena pāpena me tvadya duḥkhametatsamāgatam
— did I give to the knowers of the Veda, for the satisfaction of Chitragupta. Because of that sin, this sorrow has come upon me today.
Verse 41 (skanda.3.12.41)
nāśvatthaścūtavṛkṣo vā nyagrodhastiṁtiṇī tathā picumaṁdaḥ kapittho vā tathaivāmalakītaruḥ
Neither a peepal tree, nor a mango tree, nor a banyan, nor a tamarind, nor a neem, nor a wood-apple, nor likewise an amla tree,
Verse 42 (skanda.3.12.42)
nārikelatarurvāpi sthāpito'dhvagaśāṁtaye tena pāpena me tvadya duḥkhametatsamāgatam
— nor even a coconut tree, did I plant for the comfort of travelers. Because of that sin, this sorrow has come upon me today.
Verse 43 (skanda.3.12.43)
sammārjanaṁ ca na kṛtaṁ śivaviṣṇvālaye mayā na khānitaṁ taṭākaṁ ca na kūpopi hrado'pivā
Nor did I sweep and clean the temples of Shiva or Vishnu; nor did I dig a tank, nor a well, nor even a pond.
Verse 44 (skanda.3.12.44)
na ropitaṁ puṣpavanaṁ tathaiva tulasīvanam śivaviṣṇvālayau vāpi nirmito na mayā priye
I never planted a flower garden, nor likewise a tulasi grove. O beloved, I never built a temple of Shiva or Vishnu.
Verse 45 (skanda.3.12.45)
tena pāpena me tvadya duḥkhametatsamāgatam na mayā paitṛke māsi pitṝnuddiśya śobhane mahālayaṁ kṛtaṁ śrāddhamaṣṭakāśrāddhameva vā
Because of that sin, this sorrow has come upon me today. O gracious one, in the month sacred to the ancestors, I never performed, for the sake of my ancestors, the Mahalaya shraddha, nor the Ashtaka-shraddha,
Verse 46 (skanda.3.12.46)
nityaśrāddhaṁ tathā kāmyaṁ śrāddhaṁ naimittikaṁ priye na kṛtāḥ kratavaścāpi vidhivadbhūridakṣiṇāḥ
— nor the nitya-shraddha, nor the kamya-shraddha, nor, O beloved, the naimittika-shraddha. Nor did I duly perform sacrifices with abundant dakshina.
Verse 47 (skanda.3.12.47)
māsopavāso na kṛtaḥ ekādaśyāmupoṣaṇam dhanurmāsepyuṣaḥkāle śaṁbhuviṣṇvādidevatāḥ
I never performed a month-long fast, nor fasting on Ekadashi. In the month of Dhanu, at dawn, I never —
Verse 48 (skanda.3.12.48)
saṁpūjya vidhivadbhadre naivedyaṁ na kṛtaṁ mayā tena pāpena me tvadya duḥkhametatsamā gatam
— duly worshipped, O gracious one, nor offered them naivedya. Because of that sin, this sorrow has come upon me today.
Verse 49 (skanda.3.12.49)
hariśaṁkarayornāmnāṁ kīrtanaṁ na mayā kṛtam uddhūlanaṁ tripuṇḍraṁ ca jābāloktaiśca saptabhiḥ
I never performed kirtana of the names of Hari and Shankara; nor did I apply ash-smearing, the tripundra, with the seven materials declared in the Jabala scripture —
Verse 50 (skanda.3.12.50)
na dhṛtaṁ bhasmanā bhadre rudrākṣaṁ na dhṛtaṁ mayā japaśca rudrasūktānāṁ paṁcākṣarajapastathā
— O gracious one, I never wore sacred ash, nor did I wear rudraksha. Nor did I recite the Rudra-suktas, nor the five-syllabled mantra,
Verse 51 (skanda.3.12.51)
tathā puruṣasūktasya japo'pyaṣṭākṣarasya ca naivakāri mayā bhadre naivānyo dharmasaṁcayaḥ
— nor likewise the recitation of the Purusha-sukta, nor of the eight-syllabled mantra. None of this was performed by me, O gracious one, nor any other accumulation of merit.
Verse 52 (skanda.3.12.52)
tena pāpena me tvadya duḥkhametatsamāgatam evaṁ sa vilapanrājā bhāryāmābhāṣya khinnadhīḥ
Because of that sin, this sorrow has come upon me today." Thus lamenting, that king, having spoken to his wife, his mind distressed,
Verse 53 (skanda.3.12.53)
mūrcchāmupāyayau viprāḥ papāta ca dharātale sumitrā patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhāryā sā patimaṁganā
— O brahmins, fell into a swoon, and collapsed upon the ground. Sumitra, that woman, his wife, seeing her husband fallen,
Verse 54 (skanda.3.12.54)
āliṁgya vilalāpātha saputrā bhṛśaduḥkhitā mama nātha mahārāja somānvayadhuraṁdhara
— embracing him, then wailed, greatly grieved, together with her son: "O my lord, O great king, O bearer of the burden of the lunar dynasty,
Verse 55 (skanda.3.12.55)
māṁ vihāya kva yāto'si saputrāṁ vijane vane anāthāṁ tvāmanugatāṁ siṁhatrastāṁ mṛgīmiva
— abandoning me, where have you gone, leaving me with our son in this desolate forest — me, helpless, who followed you, like a doe terrified by a lion?
Verse 56 (skanda.3.12.56)
If you are dead, O lord of kings, then I too shall immediately follow you; I shall not remain, even for a moment, as a widow.
Verse 57 (skanda.3.12.57)
pitaraṁ paśya patitaṁ candrakāṁta suta kṣitau ityuktaścaṁdrakāṁto'pi suto rājñaḥ kṣudhārditaḥ
O Chandrakanta, my son, see your father fallen upon the ground." Thus addressed, Chandrakanta too, the king's son, tormented by hunger,
Verse 58 (skanda.3.12.58)
pitaraṁ parirabhyātha niḥśabdaṁ praruroda saḥ etasminnaṁtare viprā jaṭāvalkalasaṁvṛtaḥ
— embracing his father, then wept silently. Meanwhile, O brahmins, a sage covered with matted locks and bark garments —
Verse 59 (skanda.3.12.59)
bhasmoddhūlitasarvāṁgastripuṇḍrāṁkitamastakaḥ rudrākṣamālābharaṇaḥ sitayajñopavītavān
— his whole body smeared with ash, his forehead marked with the tripundra, adorned with a rosary of rudraksha, wearing a white sacred thread —
Verse 60 (skanda.3.12.60)
parāśaronāma munirājagāma yadṛcchayā taṁ śabdamabhilakṣyāsau sādhusajjanasaṁmataḥ
