— he attains immortality, through the grace of Shankara. For those who immerse themselves in this pool, the destroyer of great sins,
Verse 6 (skanda.3.13.6)

amṛtatvaṁ haro dātuṁ sannidhatte sadā taṭe ṛṣaya ūcuḥ iyaṁ hyamṛtavāpīti kuto hetornigadyate
— Hara is always present on its bank, to grant immortality. The sages said: For what reason is this indeed called Amritavapi?

asmākametadbrūhi tvaṁ kṛpayā vyāsaśāsita tathaivāmṛtanāminyā vāpikāyāśca vaibhavam tṛptirna jāyate'smākaṁ tvadvaco'mṛtapāyinām
Tell this to us, out of kindness, O you instructed by Vyasa; and likewise the glory of this pool of the name Amrita. We, drinking the nectar of your words, do not become satisfied.
Verse 8 (skanda.3.13.8)

— always devoted to the five great sacrifices, offering the Vaishvadeva bali, performing the annual shraddha for his parents, and, O brahmins, other shraddhas too,
Verse 19 (skanda.3.13.19)
evaṁ nināya kālaṁ sa nityānuṣṭhānatatparaḥ tasyaivaṁ vartamānasya tapaścarata uttamam
— thus he passed his time, devoted to his daily observances. As he thus continued, performing supreme austerity,
Verse 20 (skanda.3.13.20)

Verse 21 (skanda.3.13.21)

— standing motionless upon the little toe of his left foot, his arms upraised, unsupported, performed the most terrible austerity.
Verse 23 (skanda.3.13.23)
atha tasya prasannātmā mahādevo ghṛṇānidhiḥ prādurāsītsvayā dīptyā diśo daśa vibhāsayan
Then, Mahadeva, the treasury of compassion, his mind pleased, became manifest to him, illuminating the ten directions with his own radiance.
Verse 24 (skanda.3.13.24)

Then that sage beheld Shambhu, together with Amba (Parvati), seated upon his bull; seeing him, bowing, he praised Ishvara, the lord of Bhavani.
Verse 25 (skanda.3.13.25)
muniruvāca namaste pārvatīnātha nīlakaṁṭha maheśvara śiva rudra mahādeva nama ste śaṁbhave vibho
The sage said: "Salutation to you, O lord of Parvati, O blue-throated Maheshvara! O Shiva, O Rudra, O Mahadeva, salutation to you, O Shambhu, O mighty one!
Verse 26 (skanda.3.13.26)
śrīkaṁṭhomāpate śūlinbhaganetraharāvyaya gaṁgādhara virūpākṣa namaste rudra manyave
O Shrikantha, O lord of Uma, O trident-bearer, O destroyer of Bhaga's eye, O imperishable one! O Gangadhara, O odd-eyed one, salutation to you, O wrathful Rudra!
Verse 27 (skanda.3.13.27)
aṁtakāre kāmaśatro devadeva jagatpate svāminpaśupate śarva namaste śatadhanvane dakṣayakṣavināśāya snāyūnāṁ pataye namaḥ nicerave namastubhyaṁ puṣṭānāṁ pataye namaḥ
O destroyer of Antaka (Yama), O enemy of Kama, O god of gods, O lord of the universe, O master, O Pashupati, O Sharva, salutation to you, of a hundred bows! Salutation to the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, the lord of sinews! Salutation to you, Nichera, lord of nourishment!
Verse 28 (skanda.3.13.28)
bhūyobhūyo namastubhyaṁ mahādeva kṛpālaya dustarādbhavasiṁdhormāṁ tārayasva trilocana
Again and again, salutation to you, O Mahadeva, abode of compassion! O three-eyed one, carry me across the hard-to-cross ocean of worldly existence."
Verse 29 (skanda.3.13.29)
agastyasodareṇaivaṁ stutaḥ śaṁbhurabhāṣata prīṇayanvacasā svena kuṁbhajasyānujaṁ munim
Thus praised by Agastya's brother, Shambhu spoke, pleasing with his own words that sage, the younger brother of Agastya (born of the jar):
Verse 30 (skanda.3.13.30)
īśvara uvāca kuṁbhajānuja vakṣyāmi muktyupāyaṁ tavānagha setumadhye mahātīrthaṁ gaṁdhamādanaparvate
Ishvara said: "O sinless younger brother of the jar-born one, I shall tell you the means of liberation. In the midst of the bridge, on Mount Gandhamadana, there is a great ford,
Verse 31 (skanda.3.13.31)
maṁgalākhyasya tīrthasya nātidūreṇa vartate tatra gatvā kuru snānaṁ tato muktimavāpsyasi
— not far from the ford named Mangala. Going there, bathe; then you shall attain liberation.
Verse 32 (skanda.3.13.32)
tattīrthasevanānnānyomokṣo pāyo laghustava na hi tattīrthavaiśiṣṭyaṁ vaktuṁ śakyaṁ mayāpi ca
There is no other, easier means of liberation for you than the service of that ford. Indeed, even I am not able to describe the special glory of that ford.
Verse 33 (skanda.3.13.33)
saṁdeho nātra kartavyastvayādya munisattama tasmāttatraiva gaccha tvaṁ yadīcchasi bhavakṣayam
O best of sages, no doubt should be entertained by you about this. Therefore, if you desire the destruction of worldly existence, go there itself."
Verse 34 (skanda.3.13.34)
ityuktvā bhagavānīśastatraivāṁtaradhīyata tato devasya vacanādagastyasya sahodaraḥ
Having said this, the venerable Ishvara vanished there itself. Then, by the word of the god, the brother of Agastya —
Verse 35 (skanda.3.13.35)
gatvā setuṁ samudre tu gaṁdhamādanaparvate īśvaraṇaiva gaditaṁ tīrthaṁ tacchīghramāsadat
— going to the bridge in the ocean, on Mount Gandhamadana, swiftly reached that ford declared by Ishvara himself.
Verse 36 (skanda.3.13.36)
tatra tīrthe mahāpuṇye snātānāṁ muktidāyini ekāṁtarāmanāthākhye kṣetrālaṁkaraṇe śubhe
There, at that greatly meritorious ford, the giver of liberation to those who bathe, named Ekantaramanatha, an auspicious ornament of the sacred field,
Verse 37 (skanda.3.13.37)
sasnau niyamapūrvaṁ sa trīṇi varṣāṇi vai dvijaḥ tataścaturthavarṣe tu samādhistho mahāmuniḥ
— that brahmin bathed with due observance for three years. Then, in the fourth year, that great sage, established in samadhi,
Verse 38 (skanda.3.13.38)
brahmanāḍyā prāṇavāyuṁ mūrddhanyāropyayogataḥ prāṇānnirgamayāmāsa brahmaraṁdhreṇa tatra saḥ
— through the Brahma-nadi, raising his life-breath to the crown of his head through yoga, expelled his life-breaths there through the Brahmarandhra.
Verse 39 (skanda.3.13.39)
tato'gastyānujaḥ soyaṁ parityajya kalevaram avāpa muktiṁ paramāṁ tasya tīrthasya vaibhavāt
Then that younger brother of Agastya, casting off his body, attained supreme liberation, through the power of that ford.
Verse 40 (skanda.3.13.40)
vinaṣṭāśeṣaduḥkhasya tattīrthasnānavaibhavāt mṛtatvamabhūdyasmādagastyānujajanmanaḥ
Since, through the power of bathing at that ford, all his sorrow was destroyed, and mortality itself — for him born as the younger brother of Agastya — came to its end there —
Verse 41 (skanda.3.13.41)
tato hyamṛtavāpītiprathā'syāsīnmunīśvarāḥ atra tīrthe narā ye tu varṣatrayamataṁdritāḥ
— thence indeed, O lords of sages, the fame "Amritavapi" belonged to this pool. Whatever men, tirelessly, for three years, at this ford,
Verse 42 (skanda.3.13.42)
snānaṁ kurvaṁti te satyamamṛtatvaṁ prayāṁti hi evaṁ tvamṛtavāpīti prathā tadvaibhavaṁ tathā yuṣmākaṁ kathitaṁ viprāḥ kiṁbhūyaḥ śrotumicchatha
— perform bathing, they truly attain immortality indeed. Thus, O brahmins, the fame "Amritavapi" and its glory too have been told to you; what more do you wish to hear?
Verse 43 (skanda.3.13.43)
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ekāṁtarāmanāthākhyā tasya kṣetrasya vai mune
The sages said: O sage, the name Ekantaramanatha of that sacred field —
Verse 44 (skanda.3.13.44)
kathaṁ samāgatā sūta vaktumetattvamarhasi asmākaṁ muniśārdūla tacchuśrūṣātibhūyasī
— how did it come about, O Suta? You ought to tell us this. O tiger among sages, our desire to hear it is very great.
Verse 45 (skanda.3.13.45)
śrīsūta uvāca purā dāśarathī rāmaḥ sasugrīvabhibhīṣaṇaḥ lakṣmaṇena yuto bhrātrā maṁtrajñena hanūmatā
Shri Suta said: Long ago, Rama, son of Dasharatha, together with Sugriva and Vibhishana, joined by his brother Lakshmana, and by Hanuman, knower of counsel,
Verse 46 (skanda.3.13.46)
vānarairbadhyamāne tu setāvaṁbudhimadhyataḥ ciṁtayanmanasā sītāmekāṁte samamaṁtrayat
— while the bridge was being built by the vanaras in the midst of the ocean, thinking in his mind of Sita, took counsel with them in private.
Verse 47 (skanda.3.13.47)
teṣu maṁtra yamāṇeṣu rāvaṇādivadhaṁ prati ullolatarakallolo jughoṣa jaladhirbhṛśam
While they were consulting about the slaying of Ravana and the others, the ocean, its waves surging exceedingly, roared exceedingly.
Verse 48 (skanda.3.13.48)
arṇavasya mahābhīme jṛṁbhamāṇe mahādhvanau anyonyakathitāṁ vārtāṁ nāśṛṇvaṁste parasparam
As the most fearful, great roar of the ocean swelled, they could not hear one another's words spoken between them.
Verse 49 (skanda.3.13.49)
tataḥ kiṁcidiva kruddho bhṛkuṭīkuṭilekṣaṇaḥ bhrūbhaṁgalīlayā rāmo niyamya jaladhiṁ tadā
Then Rama, somewhat angered, his eyes contorted with his frown, then, with the mere play of a frown, restraining the ocean,
Verse 50 (skanda.3.13.50)
nyamaṁtrayata vipreṁdrā rākṣasānāṁ vadhaṁ prati ekāṁte'maṁtrayattatra taiḥ sārdhaṁ rāghavo yataḥ
— O foremost of brahmins, took counsel regarding the slaying of the rakshasas. Because Raghava took counsel there in private with them,
Verse 51 (skanda.3.13.51)
ekāṁtarāmanāthākhyaṁ tatkṣetramabhavadvijāḥ soyaṁ niyamito vārdhī rāmabhrūbhaṁgalīlayā
— O brahmins, that sacred field became known by the name Ekantaramanatha. That very ocean, restrained by the mere play of Rama's frown,
Verse 52 (skanda.3.13.52)
adyāpi niścalajalastatpradeśeṣu dṛśyate ekāṁtarāmanāthākhyaṁ tadetatkṣetramuttamam
— even today, is seen with still water in that region. This is that excellent sacred field, named Ekantaramanatha.
Verse 53 (skanda.3.13.53)
āgatyāmṛtavāpyāṁ ca snātvā niyamapūrvakam rāmādīnapi sevaṁte te sarve muktimāpnuyuḥ
All those who come here, and, having bathed with due observance in Amritavapi, worship Rama and the others too, attain liberation.
Verse 54 (skanda.3.13.54)
advaitavijñānavivekaśūnyā viraktihīnāśca samādhi hīnāḥ yāgādyanuṣṭhānavivarjitāśca snātvātra yāsyaṁtyamṛtaṁ dvijeṁdrāḥ
O foremost of brahmins, even those devoid of the discernment of non-dual knowledge, without dispassion, without samadhi, and devoid of the performance of sacrifice and other rites, bathing here, attain immortality.
