Brahma Khanda · Chapter 20

The Glory of Jata-tirtha and the Purification of Shuka's Mind

Chapter 19All chaptersChapter 21

Verse 1 (skanda.3.20.1)

śrīsūta uvāca lakṣmaṇasya mahātīrthe brahmahatyāvināśane snātvā svacittaśuddhyarthaṁ jaṭātīrthaṁ tato vrajet

Suta said: Having bathed at Lakshmana's great tirtha, destroyer of brahminicide, for the purification of his own mind, one should then go to Jatatirtha.

Verse 2 (skanda.3.20.2)

janmamṛtyujarākrāṁtasaṁsārāturacetasām ajñānanāśakaṁ nāsti jaṭātīrthādṛte dvijāḥ

For those whose minds are afflicted by samsara, overcome by birth, death, and old age, there is no destroyer of ignorance except Jatatirtha, O brahmins.

Verse 3 (skanda.3.20.3)

loke mumukṣavaḥ keciccittaśuddhimabhīpsavaḥ vācā paṭhaṁti vedāṁtāṁstūṣṇīnnānubhavaṁti te

In the world, some seekers of liberation, desiring purity of mind, recite the Vedanta with the voice, but do not experience it in silence.

Verse 4 (skanda.3.20.4)

pūrvapakṣamahāgrāhe siddhāṁtajhaṣasaṁkule vedāṁtābdhāvihājñānaṁ muhyaṁti patitā dvijāḥ

In the great crocodile of the prior-position (purvapaksha), thronged with the fish of doctrine (siddhanta), in the ocean of Vedanta here, brahmins, having fallen in ignorance, become bewildered.

Verse 5 (skanda.3.20.5)

prathamaṁ cittaśuddhyarthaṁ vedāṁtānsaṁpaṭhaṁti ye vivadaṁte paṭhitvā te kalahaṁ ca vitanvate

Those who first study the Vedanta for the purification of mind, having studied it, dispute and stir up quarrels.

Verse 6 (skanda.3.20.6)

Purity of mind does not come from Vedanta, which is the cause of much delusion; therefore, O lords of sages, we do not esteem the Vedanta highly.

Verse 7 (skanda.3.20.7)

cittaśuddhiṁ yadīcchadhvaṁ laghūpāyena tāpasāḥ udghoṣayāmi sarveṣāṁ jaṭātīrthaṁ niṣevata

If you ascetics desire purity of mind by an easy means, I proclaim to all: resort to Jatatirtha.

Verse 8 (skanda.3.20.8)

purā sarvopakārārthaṁ tīrthamajñānanāśanam etadvinirmitaṁ sākṣācchambhunā gandhamādane

Long ago, for the benefit of all, this tirtha, destroyer of ignorance, was created directly by Shambhu himself at Gandhamadana.

Verse 9 (skanda.3.20.9)

nihate rāvaṇe viprā jaṭāṁ rāmastu dhārmikaḥ kṣālayāmāsa yattoye tajjaṭātīrthamucyate

When Ravana was slain, O brahmins, the righteous Rama washed his matted locks (jata) in whose water - that is called Jatatirtha.

Verse 10 (skanda.3.20.10)

varṣāṇāṁ ṣaṣṭisāhasraṁ jāhnavījalamajjanam godāvaryāṁ sakṛtsnānaṁ siṁhasthe ca bṛhaspatau

Sixty thousand years of immersion in the water of the Jahnavi (Ganga), a single bath in the Godavari when Jupiter is in Leo (Simhastha) -

Verse 11 (skanda.3.20.11)

tāvatsahasrasnānāni siṁhaṁ devagurau gate gomatyāṁ labhyate varṣaistajjaṭātīrthadarśanāt

that many thousand baths, when the guru of the gods (Jupiter) is in Leo, are obtained in the Gomati over years - that much is obtained from the mere sight of Jatatirtha.

Verse 12 (skanda.3.20.12)

jaṭātīrthe manuṣyāṇāṁ snātānāṁ dvijapuṁgavāḥ antaḥkaraṇaśuddhiḥ syāttato'jñānaṁ vinaśyati

For men bathing at Jatatirtha, O bulls among brahmins, purification of the inner faculty (antahkarana) occurs, and thereupon ignorance is destroyed.

Verse 13 (skanda.3.20.13)

ajñānanāśe jñānaṁ syāttato muktimavāpsyasi akhaṇḍasaccidānaṁdasaṁpūrṇaḥ syāttataḥ param

When ignorance is destroyed, knowledge arises; thereupon you shall attain liberation. Then you become supremely full of unbroken existence-consciousness-bliss.

Verse 14 (skanda.3.20.14)

atrāpyudāharaṁtīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam pituḥ putrasya saṁvādaṁ vyāsasya ca śukasya ca

Here too they cite this ancient story, the dialogue between father and son, of Vyasa and Shuka.

Verse 15 (skanda.3.20.15)

purā munivaraṁ kṛṣṇaṁ bhāvi tātmānamacyutam pāraṁparyaviśeṣajñaṁ sarvaśāstrārthakovidam praṇamya śirasā vyāsaṁ śukaḥ papraccha vai dvijāḥ

Of old, Shuka, having bowed his head to Vyasa - the excellent sage, the one destined to become Krishna's own self, imperishable, especially learned in tradition, skilled in the meaning of all the shastras - asked him, O brahmins.

Verse 16 (skanda.3.20.16)

śrīśuka uvāca bhagavaṁstāta sarvajña brūhi guhyamanuttamam

Shri Shuka said: "O venerable father, all-knowing one, tell me the supreme secret,

Verse 17 (skanda.3.20.17)

antaḥkaraṇaśuddhiḥ syāttathājñānavināśanam jñānodayaśca yena syādaṁte muktiśca śāśvatī

by which purity of the inner faculty may come, and likewise the destruction of ignorance; by which knowledge may dawn, and, in the end, eternal liberation.

Verse 18 (skanda.3.20.18)

tamupāyaṁ vadasvādya snehānmama mahāmune vedāṁtāścetihāsāśca purāṇādīni kṛtsnaśaḥ

Tell me that means today, out of affection for me, O great sage. The Vedantas, the Itihasas, and the Puranas and the rest, all of them,

Verse 19 (skanda.3.20.19)

adhītāni mayā tvattaḥ śodhayaṁti na mānasam ato me cittaśuddhiḥ syādyathā tāta tathā vada

have been studied by me from you, yet they do not purify my mind. Therefore tell me, O father, how my mind's purity may come."

Verse 20 (skanda.3.20.20)

iti pṛṣṭastadā vyāsaḥ śukena munisattamāḥ rahasyaṁ kathayāmāsa yenāvidyā vina śyati

Thus questioned then by Shuka, O best of sages, Vyasa related the secret by which ignorance is destroyed.

Verse 21 (skanda.3.20.21)

vyāsa uvāca śuka vakṣyāmi te guhyamavidyāgranthibhedanam buddhiśuddhipradaṁ puṁsāṁ janmādibhayanāśanam

Vyasa said: "O Shuka, I shall tell you the secret, the cutter of the knot of ignorance, the bestower of purity of intellect for men, the destroyer of the fear of birth and the rest.

Verse 22 (skanda.3.20.22)

rāmasetau mahāpuṇyaṁ gandhamādanaparvate vidyate pāpasaṁhāri jaṭātīrthamiti śrutam

On Rama's Setu, on Mount Gandhamadana, there exists a greatly holy tirtha, destroyer of sin, known as Jatatirtha.

Verse 23 (skanda.3.20.23)

jaṭāṁ svāṁ śodhayāmāsa yatra rāmo hariḥ svayam rāmo dāśarathiḥ śrīmāṁstīrthāya ca varaṁ dadau

There Rama, Hari himself, washed his own matted locks; and the illustrious Rama, son of Dasharatha, granted the tirtha a boon:

Verse 24 (skanda.3.20.24)

snāti ye'tra samāgatya jaṭātīrthe'tipāvane antaḥkaraṇaśuddhiśca teṣāṁ bhūyāditi sma saḥ

'Whoever comes here and bathes at this exceedingly holy Jatatirtha - let purification of the inner faculty come to them' - thus he said.

Verse 25 (skanda.3.20.25)

vinā yajñaṁ vinā jñānaṁ vinā jāpyamupoṣaṇam snānamātrājjaṭātīrthe buddhiśuddhirbhavennṛṇām

Without sacrifice, without knowledge, without japa or fasting, by mere bathing at Jatatirtha, purity of intellect comes to men.

Verse 26 (skanda.3.20.26)

sarvadānasamaṁ puṇyaṁ snānādatra bhaviṣyati durgāṇyanena tarati puṇyalokānsamaśnute

Merit equal to all gifts shall come from bathing here; by this one crosses difficulties and attains the worlds of merit.

Verse 27 (skanda.3.20.27)

mahattvamaśnute snānājjaṭātīrthe śubhodake jaṭātīrthaṁ vinā nānyadaṁtaḥkaraṇa śuddhaye

One attains greatness by bathing at Jatatirtha, of auspicious waters. There is no other means for the purification of the inner faculty besides Jatatirtha -

Verse 28 (skanda.3.20.28)

vidyate niyamo vāpi japo vā nānyadevatā dhanyaṁ yaśasyamāyuṣyaṁ sarvalokeṣu viśrutam

no observance, no japa, no other deity. Blessed, glorious, conferring long life, renowned in all the worlds,

Verse 29 (skanda.3.20.29)

pavitrāṇāṁ pavitraṁ ca jaṭātīrthaṁ śukādhunā sarvapāpapraśamanaṁ maṁgalānāṁ ca maṁgalam

O Shuka, Jatatirtha is now the purest among the pure, the pacifier of all sin, the auspicious among auspicious things.

Verse 30 (skanda.3.20.30)

bhṛgurvai vāruṇiḥ pūrvaṁ varuṇaṁ pitaraṁ śuka buddhiśuddhipradopāyamapṛcchatpāvanaṁ śubham provāca varuṇastasmai buddhiśuddhipradaṁ śubham

Bhrigu, son of Varuna, of old asked his father Varuna, O Shuka, about the pure, auspicious means for the bestowal of purity of intellect; Varuna told him the auspicious means bestowing purity of intellect.

Verse 31 (skanda.3.20.31)

varuṇa uvāca rāmasetau bhṛgo puṇye gandhamādanaparvate

Varuna said: 'O Bhrigu, on Rama's Setu, on the holy Mount Gandhamadana,

Verse 32 (skanda.3.20.32)

snānamātrājjaṭā tīrthe buddhiśuddhirbhaveddhruvam sa piturvacanātsadyo bhṛgurvai varuṇātmajaḥ

by mere bathing at Jatatirtha, purity of intellect surely comes.' He, Bhrigu, son of Varuna, at once, by his father's word,

Verse 33 (skanda.3.20.33)

gatvā snātvā jaṭātīrthe buddhiśuddhimavāptavān vinaṣṭājñānasaṁtānastayā śuddhyā tadā bhṛguḥ

having gone and bathed at Jatatirtha, attained purity of intellect; his continuity of ignorance destroyed, by that purification then Bhrigu,

Verse 34 (skanda.3.20.34)

utpannādvaitavijñānaḥ svapiturvaruṇādayam akhaṇḍasaccidānaṁdapūrṇākāro'bhavacchuka

non-dual knowledge having arisen in him, from his own father Varuna, O Shuka, became of the form of unbroken, complete existence-consciousness-bliss.

Verse 35 (skanda.3.20.35)

śaṁkarāṁśo'pi durvāsā jaṭātīrthe'bhiṣekataḥ manaḥśuddhimavāpyāśu brahmānaṁdamayo'bhavat

Durvasa too, a partial incarnation of Shankara, by ablution at Jatatirtha, having quickly obtained purity of mind, became full of the bliss of Brahman.

Verse 36 (skanda.3.20.36)

dattātreyo'pi viṣṇvaṁśastīrthe'sminnabhiṣecanāt śuddhāṁtaḥkaraṇo bhūtvā brahmākāro'bhavacchuka

Dattatreya too, a partial incarnation of Vishnu, by ablution at this tirtha, his inner faculty purified, became of the form of Brahman, O Shuka.

Verse 37 (skanda.3.20.37)

icchedajñānanāśaṁ yaḥ sa snāyāttu jaṭābhidhe tīrthe śuddhatame puṇye sarvapāpavināśane

Whoever desires the destruction of ignorance should bathe in the tirtha called Jata, the purest and holiest, destroying all sin.

Verse 38 (skanda.3.20.38)

jaṭātīrthamatastvaṁ ca śuka gaccha mahāmate manaḥśuddhipradaṁ tasminsnānaṁ ca kuru puṇyade

Therefore, O Shuka, go to Jatatirtha, O wise one; bathe in that bestower of purity of mind, that bestower of merit."

Verse 39 (skanda.3.20.39)

pitraivamukto vyāsena śukaḥ putrastadā dvijāḥ rāmasetuṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ gandhamādanaparvatam

Thus addressed by his father Vyasa, Shuka, that son, O brahmins, then, to the greatly holy Rama's Setu, Mount Gandhamadana,

Verse 40 (skanda.3.20.40)

agamatsnātukāmaḥ sañjaṭātīrthe viśuddhide snātvā saṁkalpapṛrvaṁ ca jaṭātīrthe śuko muniḥ

went, desiring to bathe, at Jatatirtha, the bestower of purification. Having bathed with due resolve at Jatatirtha, the sage Shuka,

Verse 41 (skanda.3.20.41)

manaḥśuddhimanuprāpya tena cājñānanāśane svasvarūpaṁ samāpannaḥ paramānaṁdarūpakam

having attained purity of mind, and thereby the destruction of ignorance, attained his own true nature, of the form of supreme bliss.

Verse 42 (skanda.3.20.42)

ye cāpyanye manaḥśuddhikāmāḥ saṁti dvijottamāḥ jaṭātīrthe tu te sarve snātuṁ bhaktipuraḥsarama

And whatever other brahmins there are, desirous of purity of mind, let all of them bathe at Jatatirtha, with devotion foremost.

Verse 43 (skanda.3.20.43)

aho janā jaṭātīrthe kāmadhenusame śubhe vidyamāne'pi kiṁ tucche ramaṁtenyatra mohitāḥ

Alas, people, even when auspicious Jatatirtha, equal to the wish-granting cow, is present, deluded, sport elsewhere in trivial things - why?

Verse 44 (skanda.3.20.44)

bhuktikāmo labhedbhuktiṁ muktikāmastu tāṁ labhet snānamātrājjaṭātīrthe satyamuktaṁ mayā dvijāḥ

One desiring enjoyment obtains enjoyment; and one desiring liberation obtains that; by mere bathing at Jatatirtha - this I have spoken truly, O brahmins.

Verse 45 (skanda.3.20.45)

vedānuvaca nātpuṇyādyajñāddānāttapovratāt upavāsājjapādyogānmanaḥśuddhirnṛṇāṁ bhavet

From meritorious Vedic recitation, from sacrifice, from gifts, from austerity and vows, from fasting, from japa, from yoga - purity of mind comes to men;

Verse 46 (skanda.3.20.46)

vināpyetāni vipreṁdrā jaṭātīrthe'tipāvane snānamātrānmanaḥśuddhirbrāhmaṇānāṁ dhruvaṁ bhavet

but even without all these, O foremost of brahmins, at the exceedingly holy Jatatirtha, by mere bathing, purity of mind surely comes to brahmins.

Verse 47 (skanda.3.20.47)

jaṭātīrthasya māhātmyaṁ mayā vaktuṁ na śakyate śaṁkaro vetti tattīrthaṁ harirvetti vidhistathā

The greatness of Jatatirtha cannot be told by me; Shankara knows that tirtha, and Hari knows it, and likewise Vidhi (Brahma).

Verse 48 (skanda.3.20.48)

jaṭātīrthasamaṁtīrthaṁ na bhūtaṁ na bhaviṣyati jaṭātīrthasya tīre yaḥ kṣetrapiṁḍaṁ samācaret

There has been, and there will be, no tirtha equal to Jatatirtha. Whoever performs the field-oblation (kshetra-pinda) on the bank of Jatatirtha -

Verse 49 (skanda.3.20.49)

gayāśrāddhasamaṁpuṇyaṁtasya syānnātra saṁśayaḥ jaṭātīrthe naraḥ snātvā na pāpena vilipyate dāridryaṁ na samāpnoti neyācca narakārṇavam

merit equal to a shraddha at Gaya shall be his, without doubt. Bathing at Jatatirtha, a man is not tainted by sin; he does not fall into poverty, nor does he go to the ocean of hell.

Verse 50 (skanda.3.20.50)

śrīsūta uvāca evaṁ vaḥ kathitaṁ viprā jaṭātīrthasya vaibhavam

Suta said: Thus has been told to you, O brahmins, the greatness of Jatatirtha,

Verse 51 (skanda.3.20.51)

yatra vyāsasuto yogī snātvā pāpavimocane avāptavānmanaḥśuddhimadvaitajñānasādhanām

where the yogi son of Vyasa (Shuka), having bathed, in that releaser from sin, attained purity of mind, the means of non-dual knowledge.

Verse 52 (skanda.3.20.52)

yastvimaṁ paṭhate'dhyāyaṁ śṛṇute vā samāhitaḥ sa vidhūyeha pāpāni labhate vaiṣṇavaṁ padam

Whoever reads this chapter, or hears it with a composed mind, shall shake off his sins here and attain the Vaishnava state (Vishnu's abode).
