Brahma Khanda · Chapter 45
Ramachandra's Teaching of the Knowledge of Truth
Verse 1 (skanda.3.45.1)
śrīsūta uvāca evaṁ pratiṣṭhite liṅge rāmeṇākliṣṭakāriṇā liṅgaṁ varaṁ samādāya mārutiḥ sahasā'yayau
Shri Suta said: Thus, when the linga had been established by Rama, who acts without effort, Maruti (Hanuman) suddenly arrived, bearing the excellent linga.
Verse 2 (skanda.3.45.2)
rāmaṁ dāśarathiṁ vīram abhivādya sa mārutiḥ vaidehīlakṣmaṇau paścāt sugrīvaṁ praṇanāma ca
That Maruti, having bowed to the heroic Rama, son of Dasharatha, then bowed to Vaidehi and Lakshmana, and to Sugriva as well.
Verse 3 (skanda.3.45.3)
sītā saikataliṅgaṁ tat pūjayantaṁ raghūdvaham dṛṣṭvātha munibhiḥ sārdhaṁ cukopa pavanātmajaḥ
Seeing that foremost of the Raghu lineage, together with the sages, worshipping the sand linga made by Sita, the son of the Wind became enraged.
Verse 4 (skanda.3.45.4)
atyantaṁ khedakhinnaḥ san vṛthākṛtapariśramaḥ uvāca rāmaṁ dharmajñaṁ hanūmān añjanātmajaḥ
Deeply distressed with sorrow, feeling his effort had been rendered vain, Hanuman, son of Anjana, said to Rama, the knower of dharma.
Verse 5 (skanda.3.45.5)
hanūmān uvāca durjāto'haṁ vṛthā rāma loke kleśāya kevalam khinno'smi bahuśo deva rākṣasaiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ
Hanuman said: O Rama, I have been born in vain, only for suffering in this world. O Lord, I have been distressed many times by the cruel-deeded demons.
Verse 6 (skanda.3.45.6)
mā sma sīmantinī kācij janayen mādṛśaṁ sutam yato'nubhūyate duḥkham anantaṁ bhavasāgare
Let no wedded woman ever bear a son like me, through whom endless suffering must be endured in this ocean of existence.
Verse 7 (skanda.3.45.7)
khinno'smi sevayā pūrvaṁ yuddhenāpi tato'dhikam anantaṁ duḥkham adhunā yato mām avamanyase
I was distressed before by service, and even more by war; and now endless sorrow has come, because you dishonor me.
Verse 8 (skanda.3.45.8)
sugrīveṇa ca bhāryārthaṁ rājyārthaṁ rākṣasena ca rāvaṇāvarajena tvaṁ sevito'si raghūdvaha
O foremost of the Raghu lineage, you have been served by Sugriva for the sake of his wife, and by the demon (Vibhishana), Ravana's younger brother, for the sake of his kingdom.
Verse 9 (skanda.3.45.9)
mayā nirhetukaṁ rāma sevito'si mahāmate vānarāṇām anekeṣu tvayājñapto'ham adya vai
O Rama, O wise one, I alone have served you without any motive. Today, among the many monkeys, you commanded me,
Verse 10 (skanda.3.45.10)
śivaliṅgaṁ samānetuṁ kailāsāt parvatottamāt kailāsaṁ tvarito gatvā na cāpaśyaṁ pinākinam
to bring a Shiva-linga from the excellent mountain Kailasa. Having gone swiftly to Kailasa, I did not behold the wielder of the Pinaka.
Verse 11 (skanda.3.45.11)
tapasā prīṇayitvā taṁ sāmbaṁ vṛṣabhavāhanam prāptaliṅgo raghupate tvaritaḥ samupāgataḥ
Having propitiated with austerity that bull-mounted Shiva together with Amba, O lord of the Raghus, having obtained the linga, I have swiftly arrived here.
Verse 12 (skanda.3.45.12)
anyaliṅgaṁ tvam adhunā pratiṣṭhāpya tu saikatam munibhir devagandharvaiḥ sākaṁ pūjayase vibho
But, O Lord, you have now established another linga of sand, and, together with sages, gods, and gandharvas, you are worshipping it.
Verse 13 (skanda.3.45.13)
mayānītam idaṁ liṅgaṁ kailāsāt parvatād vṛthā aho bhārāya me deho mandabhāgyasya jāyate
This linga of mine, brought from Mount Kailasa, has become useless. Alas, my body, unfortunate as it is, has become nothing but a burden.
Verse 14 (skanda.3.45.14)
bhūtalasya mahārāja jānakīramaṇa prabho idaṁ duḥkham ahaṁ soḍhuṁ na śaknomi raghūdvaha
O great king of this earth, O beloved of Janaki, O Lord, O foremost of the Raghu lineage, I am not able to bear this sorrow.
Verse 15 (skanda.3.45.15)
kiṁ kariṣyāmi kutrāhaṁ gamiṣyāmi na me gatiḥ ataḥ śarīraṁ tyakṣyāmi tvayāham avamānitaḥ
What shall I do now, where shall I go? There is no course open to me. Therefore I shall give up my body, for I have been dishonored by you.
Verse 16 (skanda.3.45.16)
śrīsūta uvāca evaṁ sa bahuśo viprāḥ kruśitvā pavanātmajaḥ daṇḍavat praṇato bhūmau krodhaśokākulo'bhavat
Shri Suta said: O brahmins, having lamented thus many times, the son of the Wind, prostrating himself flat upon the ground, became overwhelmed with anger and grief.
Verse 17 (skanda.3.45.17)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā raghunātho'pi prahasann idam abravīt paśyatāṁ savadevānāṁ munīnāṁ kapirakṣasām sāntvayan mārutiṁ tatra duḥkhaṁ cāsya pramārjayan
Seeing him, Raghunatha too, smiling, before the very eyes of all the gods, sages, monkeys, and demons, comforting Maruti and dispelling his sorrow, said this.
Verse 18 (skanda.3.45.18)
śrīrāma uvāca sarvaṁ jānāmy ahaṁ kāryam ātmano'pi parasya ca
Shri Rama said: I know everything that must be done, both my own and that of others.
Verse 19 (skanda.3.45.19)
jātasya jāyamānasya mṛtasyāpi sadā kape jāyate mriyate jantur eka eva svakarmaṇā
O monkey, of the one born, being born, and even the one who has died — a being, alone, is born and dies by his own karma.
Verse 20 (skanda.3.45.20)
prayāti narakaṁ cāpi paramātmā tu nirguṇaḥ evaṁ tattvaṁ viniścitya śokaṁ mā kuru vānara
and he alone goes to hell; but the Supreme Self is without attributes. Having ascertained this truth, O monkey, do not grieve.
Verse 21 (skanda.3.45.21)
liṅgatrayavinirmuktaṁ jyotir ekaṁ nirañjanam nirāśrayaṁ nirvikāram ātmānaṁ paśya nityaśaḥ
See ever the Self — free of the three bodies, the one stainless light, without support, without change.
Verse 22 (skanda.3.45.22)
kim arthaṁ kuruṣe śokaṁ tattvajñānasya bādhakam tattvajñāne sadā niṣṭhāṁ kuru vānarasattama
Why do you engage in grief, which obstructs the knowledge of truth? O best of monkeys, hold ever to steadfastness in the knowledge of truth.
Verse 23 (skanda.3.45.23)
svayamprakāśam ātmānaṁ dhyāyasva satataṁ kape dehādau mamatāṁ muñca tattvajñānavirodhinīm
O monkey, meditate always on the self-luminous Self. Abandon attachment to the body and the like, which is the enemy of the knowledge of truth.
Verse 24 (skanda.3.45.24)
dharmaṁ bhajasva satatam prāṇihiṁsāṁ parityaja sevasva sādhupuruṣāñ jahi sarvendriyāṇi ca
Cultivate dharma always; abandon violence toward living beings. Serve holy men, and subdue all the senses.
Verse 25 (skanda.3.45.25)
parityajasva satatam anyeṣāṁ doṣakīrtanam śivaviṣṇvādidevānām arcāṁ kuru sadā kape
Always give up the proclaiming of others' faults. O monkey, always perform the worship of Shiva, Vishnu, and the other gods.
Verse 26 (skanda.3.45.26)
satyaṁ vadasva satataṁ parityaja śucaṁ kape pratyagbrahmaikatājñānaṁ mohavastusamudgatam
Always speak the truth; O monkey, abandon sorrow. The knowledge of the oneness of the inner self and Brahman, arising from what is born of delusion,
Verse 27 (skanda.3.45.27)
śobhanāśobhanā bhrāntiḥ kalpitāsmin yathārthavat adhyāste śobhanatvena padārthe mohavaibhavāt
— the illusion of good and bad is superimposed upon it as though real. By the power of delusion, the quality of 'goodness' is superimposed upon an object.
Verse 28 (skanda.3.45.28)
rogo vijāyate nṛṇāṁ bhrāntānāṁ kapisattama rāgadveṣabalād baddhā dharmā dharmavaśaṅgatāḥ
O best of monkeys, disease arises for men who are deluded. Bound by the force of attachment and aversion, subject to dharma and adharma,
Verse 29 (skanda.3.45.29)
devatiryaṅmanuṣyādyā nirayaṁ yānti mānavāḥ candanāgarukarpūrapramukhā atiśobhanāḥ
men go to the realms of gods, animals, humans, and the like, and also to hell. Sandalwood, aloeswood, camphor, and the like — most beautiful things—
Verse 30 (skanda.3.45.30)
malaṁ bhavanti yat sparśāt tac charīraṁ kathaṁ sukham bhakṣyabhojyādayaḥ sarve padārthā atiśobhanāḥ
become filth by mere contact with it — how then can that body be a source of happiness? All most beautiful edible and food substances,
Verse 31 (skanda.3.45.31)
viṣṭhā bhavanti yat saṅgāt tac charīraṁ kathaṁ sukham sugandhi śītalaṁ toyaṁ mūtraṁ yat saṅgamād bhavet
become excrement by association with it — how then can that body be a source of happiness? Fragrant, cool water too, which by association with it becomes urine,
Verse 32 (skanda.3.45.32)
tat kathaṁ śobhanaṁ piṇḍaṁ bhaved brūhi kape'dhunā atīva dhavalāḥ śuddhāḥ paṭā yat saṅgamena hi
how, then, can that body be called beautiful? Tell me now, O monkey. Even most white, pure garments, which by contact with it—
Verse 33 (skanda.3.45.33)
bhavanti malināḥ svedāt tat kathaṁ śobhanaṁ bhaveta śrūyatāṁ paramārtho me hanūman vāyunandana
become soiled by sweat — how could it be called beautiful? O Hanuman, O son of the Wind, hear my supreme teaching.
Verse 34 (skanda.3.45.34)
asmin saṁsāragarte tu kiñcit saukhyaṁ na vidyate prathamaṁ jantur āpnoti janma bālyaṁ tataḥ param
In this pit of worldly existence, no happiness whatsoever exists. First a being obtains birth, and after that, childhood,
Verse 35 (skanda.3.45.35)
paścād yauvanam āpnoti tato vārdhakyam aśnute paścān mṛtyum avāpnoti punarjanma tad aśnute
then he attains youth, then he attains old age. Then he attains death, and then again he attains rebirth.
Verse 36 (skanda.3.45.36)
ajñānavaibhavād eva duḥkham āpnoti mānavaḥ tad ajñānanivṛttau tu prāpnoti sukham uttamam
It is only from the sway of ignorance that man obtains sorrow. Only when that ignorance is removed does he obtain the highest happiness.
Verse 37 (skanda.3.45.37)
ajñānasya nivṛttis tu jñānād eva na karmaṇā jñānaṁ nāma paraṁ brahma jñānaṁ vedāntavākyajam
The removal of ignorance comes only from knowledge, not from action. Knowledge means the supreme Brahman; knowledge is born of the words of the Vedanta.
Verse 38 (skanda.3.45.38)
taj jñānaṁ ca viraktasya jāyate netarasya hi mukhyādhikāriṇaḥ satyam ācāryasya prasādataḥ
And that knowledge arises only for the dispassionate, not for others — truly, for the principal qualified aspirant, by the grace of a teacher.
Verse 39 (skanda.3.45.39)
yadā sarve pramucyante kāmā ye'sya hṛdi sthitāḥ tadā martyo'mṛto'traiva paraṁ brahma samaśnute
When all the desires that dwell in his heart are relinquished, then the mortal, right here, becomes immortal and attains the supreme Brahman.
Verse 40 (skanda.3.45.40)
jāgrataṁ ca svapantaṁ ca bhuñjantaṁ ca sthitaṁ tathā imaṁ janaṁ sadā krūraḥ kṛtāntaḥ parikarṣati
Whether waking, sleeping, enjoying, or remaining still, cruel Death ever drags this person along.
Verse 41 (skanda.3.45.41)
sarve kṣayāntā nicayāḥ patanāntāḥ samucchrayāḥ saṁyogā viprayogāntā maraṇāntaṁ ca jīvitam
All accumulations end in decay, all rises end in falls, all unions end in separation, and life ends in death.
Verse 42 (skanda.3.45.42)
yathā phalānāṁ pakvānāṁ nānyatra patanād bhayam yathā narāṇāṁ jātānāṁ nānyatra patanād bhayam
As for ripened fruits there is no fear except of falling, so for men who are born there is no fear except of dying.
Verse 43 (skanda.3.45.43)
yathā gṛhaṁ dṛḍhastambhaṁ jīrṇaṁ kāle vinaśyati evaṁ vinaśyanti narā jarāmṛtyuvaśaṅgatāḥ
As a house with sturdy pillars, in time, decays and perishes, so men, subject to old age and death, perish.
Verse 44 (skanda.3.45.44)
ahorātrasya gamanān nṛṇām āyur vinaśyati ātmānam anuśoca tvaṁ kim anyam anuśocasi
With the passing of day and night, the lifespan of men wastes away. Grieve for yourself — why do you grieve for another?
Verse 45 (skanda.3.45.45)
naśyaty āyuḥ sthitasyāpi dhāvato'pi kapīśvara sahaiva mṛtyur vrajati saha mṛtyur niṣīdati
O lord of monkeys, the lifespan wastes away both for one who is still and for one who runs. Death travels along together with one, sits together with one.
Verse 46 (skanda.3.45.46)
caritvā dūradeśaṁ ca saha mṛtyur nivartate śarīre valayaḥ prāptāḥ śvetā jātāḥ śiroruhāḥ
Having wandered to a distant land, Death returns together with one. Wrinkles appear on the body, the hair on the head turns white,
Verse 47 (skanda.3.45.47)
jīryate jarayā dehaḥ śvāsakāsādinā tathā yathā kāṣṭhaṁ ca kāṣṭhaṁ ca sameyātāṁ mahodadhau
the body wears away from old age and from breathlessness and coughing. Just as two pieces of wood might come together in the great ocean,
Verse 48 (skanda.3.45.48)
sametya ca vyapeyātāṁ kālayogena vānara evaṁ bhāryā ca putraś ca vadhukṣetradhanāni ca
O monkey, and then, through the workings of time, separate again — so too wife, son, daughter-in-law, land, and wealth,
Verse 49 (skanda.3.45.49)
kvacit sambhūya gacchanti punar anyatra vānara yathā hi pānthaṁ gacchantaṁ pathi kaścit pathi sthitaḥ
O monkey, coming together somewhere, then go their separate ways again. Just as, on a road, some traveler walking along, and someone else standing on the road,
Verse 50 (skanda.3.45.50)
aham apy āgamiṣyāmi bhavadbhiḥ sākam ity atha kañcit kālaṁ sametau tau punar anyatra gacchataḥ
saying 'I too shall go with you' — the two, having journeyed together for some time, then go their separate ways again.
Verse 51 (skanda.3.45.51)
evaṁ bhāryāsutādīnāṁ saṅgamo naśvaraḥ kape śarīrajanmanā sākaṁ mṛtyuḥ sañjāyate dhruvam
O monkey, in just this way, union with wife, sons, and the rest is perishable. Together with the birth of the body, death too is certainly born.
Verse 52 (skanda.3.45.52)
avaśyaṁbhāvimaraṇe na hi jātu pratikriyā etac charīrapāte tu dehī karmagatiṁ gataḥ
For inevitable death there is never any remedy. At the fall of this body, the embodied soul goes according to the course of its karma,
Verse 53 (skanda.3.45.53)
prāpya piṇḍāntaraṁ vatsa pūrvapiṇḍaṁ tyajaty asau prāṇināṁ na sadaikatra vāso bhavati vānara
O child, having obtained a new body, he abandons the previous body. O monkey, beings never dwell always in one place.
Verse 54 (skanda.3.45.54)
svasvakarmavaśāt sarve viyujyante pṛthak pṛthak yathā prāṇiśarīrāṇi naśyanti ca bhavanti ca
Subject to their own respective karma, all are separated one from another. As the bodies of beings perish and come into being,
Verse 55 (skanda.3.45.55)
ātmano janmamaraṇe naiva staḥ kapisattama atas tvam añjanāsūno viśokaṁ jñānam advayam
O best of monkeys, the Self is never born and never dies. Therefore, O son of Anjana, contemplate day and night that sorrowless, non-dual,
Verse 56 (skanda.3.45.56)
sadrūpam amalaṁ brahma cintayasva divāniśam tvatkṛtaṁ matkṛtaṁ karma matkṛtaṁ tvatkṛtaṁ tathā
being-formed, stainless Brahman. What is done by you is done by me, and what is done by me is likewise done by you —
Verse 57 (skanda.3.45.57)
malliṅgasthāpanaṁ tasmāt tvalliṅgasthāpanaṁ kape muhūrtātikramāl liṅgaṁ saikataṁ sītayā kṛtam
O monkey, therefore the establishing of the linga by me is the establishing of the linga by you. Because the auspicious moment had passed, the sand linga made by Sita,
Verse 58 (skanda.3.45.58)
mayātra sthāpitaṁ tasmāt kopaṁ duḥkhaṁ ca mā kuru kailāsād āgataṁ liṅgaṁ sthāpayāsminn chubhe dine
was established here by me; therefore do not be angry or grieve. Establish this linga brought from Kailasa on this auspicious day.
Verse 59 (skanda.3.45.59)
tava nāmnā tv idaṁ liṅgaṁ yātu lokatraye prathām hanūmadīśvaraṁ dṛṣṭvā draṣṭavyo rāghaveśvaraḥ
By your very name, let this linga attain fame in all three worlds. Having seen Hanumadishvara, one should then also see Raghaveshvara.
Verse 60 (skanda.3.45.60)
brahmarākṣasayūthāni hatāni bhavatā kape ataḥ svanāmnā liṅgasya sthāpanāt tvaṁ pramokṣyase
O monkey, you have slain hosts of brahmin-demons. Therefore, by establishing a linga in your own name, you shall be freed from that.
Verse 61 (skanda.3.45.61)
svayaṁ hareṇa dattaṁ tu hanūmannāmakaṁ śivam sampaśyan rāmanāthaṁ ca kṛtakṛtyo bhaven naraḥ
Shiva, named Hanuman, given by Hara himself — beholding him together with Ramanatha, a man becomes fulfilled.
Verse 62 (skanda.3.45.62)
yojanānāṁ sahasre'pi smṛtvā liṅgaṁ hanūmataḥ rāmanātheśvaraṁ cāpi smṛtvā sāyujyam āpnuyāt
Even from a thousand yojanas away, remembering the linga of Hanuman and remembering Ramanatheshvara too, one attains union with the divine.
Verse 63 (skanda.3.45.63)
teneṣṭaṁ sarvayajñaiś ca tapaś cākāri kṛtsnaśaḥ yena dṛṣṭau mahādevau hanūmadrāghaveśvarau
By whoever has beheld both those Mahadevas, Hanumadishvara and Raghaveshvara, all sacrifices have been performed and every austerity accomplished.
Verse 64 (skanda.3.45.64)
hanūmatā kṛtaṁ liṅgaṁ yac ca liṅgaṁ mayā kṛtam jānakīyaṁ ca yal liṅgaṁ yal liṅgaṁ lakṣmaṇeśvaram
The linga made by Hanuman, and the linga made by me, Janaki's linga, and the linga named Lakshmaneshvara,
Verse 65 (skanda.3.45.65)
sugrīveṇa kṛtaṁ yac ca setukartrā nalena ca aṅgadena ca nīlena tathā jāmbavatā kṛtam
the one made by Sugriva, and by Nala the bridge-builder, by Angada, by Nila, and by Jambavan,
Verse 66 (skanda.3.45.66)
vibhīṣaṇena yac cāpi ratnaliṅgaṁ pratiṣṭhitam indrādyaiś ca kṛtaṁ liṅgaṁ yac cheṣādyaiḥ pratiṣṭhitam
the jeweled linga established by Vibhishana, the linga made by Indra and the others, and the one established by Shesha and the others —
Verse 67 (skanda.3.45.67)
ity ekādaśarūpo'yaṁ śivaḥ sākṣād vibhāsate sadā hy eteṣu liṅgeṣu sannidhatte maheśvaraḥ
thus this Shiva shines forth visibly in eleven forms. In all these lingas, Maheshvara ever remains present.
Verse 68 (skanda.3.45.68)
tat svapāpaughaśuddhyarthaṁ sthāpayasva maheśvaram atha cet tvaṁ mahābhāga liṅgam utsādayiṣyasi
Therefore, for the purification of your own accumulated sins, establish Maheshvara. Now, O most fortunate one, if you should uproot this linga,
Verse 69 (skanda.3.45.69)
mayātra sthāpitaṁ vatsa sītayā saikataṁ kṛtam sthāpayiṣyāmi ca tato liṅgam etat tvayā kṛtam
O child — this sand linga made by Sita, established here by me — then I shall establish this linga made by you.
Verse 70 (skanda.3.45.70)
pātālaṁ sutalaṁ prāpya vitalaṁ ca rasātalam talātalaṁ ca tad idaṁ bhedayitvā tu tiṣṭhati
This linga stands having pierced through Patala, Sutala, Vitala, Rasatala, and Talatala.
Verse 71 (skanda.3.45.71)
pratiṣṭhitaṁ mayā liṅgaṁ bhettuṁ kasya balaṁ bhavet uttiṣṭha liṅgam udvāsya mayaitat sthāpitaṁ kape
Who has the power to pierce this linga established by me? Rise, O monkey, uproot this linga established by me,
Verse 72 (skanda.3.45.72)
tvayā samāhṛtaṁ liṅgaṁ sthāpayasvāśu mā śucaḥ ityuktas taṁ praṇamyātha jñātasattvo'tha vānaraḥ
and quickly establish the linga you have brought; do not grieve. Thus addressed, having bowed to him, that monkey, unaware of the limits of his own strength,
Verse 73 (skanda.3.45.73)
udvāsayāmi vegena saikataṁ liṅgam uttamam saṁsthāpayāmi kailāsād ānītaṁ liṅgam ādarāt
(thought to himself) — 'I shall swiftly uproot this excellent sand linga, and reverently establish the linga brought from Kailasa.'
Verse 74 (skanda.3.45.74)
udvāsane saikatasya kiyān bhāro bhaven mama cetasaivaṁ vicāryāyaṁ hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ
How much of a burden could uprooting mere sand be for me? — having thus considered in his mind, that Hanuman, son of Vayu,
Verse 75 (skanda.3.45.75)
paśyatāṁ sarvadevānāṁ munīnāṁ kapirakṣasām paśyato rāmacandrasya lakṣmaṇasyāpi paśyataḥ
before the very eyes of all the gods, sages, monkeys, and demons, before the eyes of Ramachandra, and before the eyes of Lakshmana too,
Verse 76 (skanda.3.45.76)
paśyantyā api vaidehyā liṅgaṁ tat saikataṁ balāt pāṇinā sarvayatnena jagrāha tarasā balī
and before the eyes of Vaidehi too, the mighty one forcefully seized that sand linga with his hand, with all his effort, swiftly.
Verse 77 (skanda.3.45.77)
yatnena mahatā cāyaṁ cālayann api mārutiḥ nālaṁ cālayituṁ hy āsīt saikataṁ liṅgam ojasā
Even trying with great effort to move it, that Maruti, with all his might, was unable to shift the sand linga.
Verse 78 (skanda.3.45.78)
tataḥ kilakilāśabdaṁ kurvan vānarapuṅgavaḥ pucchamudyamya pāṇibhyāṁ nirāsthat tannijaujasā
Then, making a chattering cry, that bull among monkeys, raising his tail, with both hands, with his own strength, strove to dislodge it.
Verse 79 (skanda.3.45.79)
ity anekaprakāreṇa cālayann api vānaraḥ naiva cālayituṁ śakto babhūva pavanātmajaḥ
Thus, trying to move it in many ways, that monkey, the son of the Wind, was still unable to move it.
Verse 80 (skanda.3.45.80)
tad veṣṭayitvā pucchena pāṇibhyāṁ dharaṇīṁ spṛśan utpapātātha tarasā vyomni vāyusutaḥ kapiḥ
Coiling it with his tail, touching the earth with both hands, that monkey, son of the Wind, then leapt up swiftly into the sky.
Verse 81 (skanda.3.45.81)
kampayan sa dharāṁ sarvāṁ saptadvīpāṁ saparvatam liṅgasya krośamātre tu mūrcchito rudhiraṁ vaman
shaking the entire earth with its seven continents and mountains, but at just a krosha's distance from the linga, he fell unconscious, vomiting blood,
Verse 82 (skanda.3.45.82)
papāta hanumān viprāḥ kampitāṅgo dharātale patato vāyuputrasya vaktrāc ca nayanadvayāt
O brahmins, Hanuman fell to the ground, his limbs trembling. As that son of the Wind fell, from his mouth and from both his eyes,
Verse 83 (skanda.3.45.83)
nāsāpuṭāc chrotrarandhrād apānāc ca dvijottamāḥ rudhiraughaḥ prasusrāva raktakuṇḍam abhūc ca tat
O best of brahmins, from the nostrils, from the ear-holes, and from the anus too, a stream of blood flowed forth, and it became a pool of blood.
Verse 84 (skanda.3.45.84)
tato hāhākṛtaṁ sarvaṁ sadevāsuramānuṣam dhāvantau kapibhiḥ sārdham ubhau tau rāmalakṣmaṇau
Then a cry of woe arose from all, gods, demons, and men together. Running along with the monkeys, those two, Rama and Lakshmana,
Verse 85 (skanda.3.45.85)
jānakīsahitau viprā hy āstāṁ śokākulau tadā sītayā sahitau vīrau vānaraiś ca mahābalau
O brahmins, together with Janaki, were then overwhelmed with grief. Together with Sita, together with the monkeys, those two mighty heroes,
Verse 86 (skanda.3.45.86)
rurucāte tadā viprā gandhamādanaparvate yathā tārāgaṇayutau rajanyāṁ śaśibhāskarau
O brahmins, shone forth then upon Mount Gandhamadana, like the moon and the sun surrounded by stars at night.
Verse 87 (skanda.3.45.87)
dadarśatur hanūmantaṁ cūrṇīkṛtakalevaram mūrcchitaṁ patitaṁ bhūmau vamantaṁ rudhiraṁ mukhāt
The two of them beheld Hanuman, his body pulverized, fallen unconscious upon the ground, vomiting blood from his mouth.
Verse 88 (skanda.3.45.88)
vilokya kapayaḥ sarve hāhākṛtvā'patan bhuvi karābhyāṁ sadayaṁ sītā hanūmantaṁ marutsutam
Seeing this, all the monkeys, crying out in woe, collapsed to the ground. Sita, with both hands, compassionately, touched Hanuman, son of the Wind,
Verse 89 (skanda.3.45.89)
tātatāteti pasparśa patitaṁ dharaṇītale rāmo'pi dṛṣṭvā patitaṁ hanūmantaṁ kapīśvaram
saying 'O child, O child,' as he lay fallen on the ground. Rama too, seeing the lord of monkeys, Hanuman, fallen,
Verse 90 (skanda.3.45.90)
āropyāṅkaṁ svapāṇibhyām āmamarśa kalevaram vimuñcan netrajaṁ vāri vāyujaṁ cāvravīd dvijāḥ
raised him onto his own lap and stroked his body with his own hands. O brahmins, shedding tears from his eyes, Rama said to the son of the Wind —
