The Cause of the Ramanatha Linga's Establishment
Verse 1 (skanda.3.46.1)
श्रीराम उवाच । पंपारण्ये वयं दीनास्त्वया वानरपुंगव । आश्वासिताः कारयित्वा सख्यमादित्यसूनुना
śrīrāma uvāca pampāraṇye vayaṁ dīnās tvayā vānarapuṅgava āśvāsitāḥ kārayitvā sakhyam ādityasūnunā
Shri Rama said: O foremost of monkeys, when we were in a wretched state in the Pampa forest, you comforted us, having arranged friendship with the son of Aditya (Sugriva).
Verse 2 (skanda.3.46.2)
त्वां दृष्ट्वा पितरं बन्धून्कौसल्यां जननीमपि । न स्मरामो वयं सर्वान्मे त्वयोपकृतं बहु
tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā pitaraṁ bandhūn kausalyāṁ jananīm api na smarāmo vayaṁ sarvān me tvayopakṛtaṁ bahu
Seeing you, we do not even remember our father, kinsmen, or mother Kausalya. You have done me very great service.
Verse 3 (skanda.3.46.3)
मदर्थं सागरस्तीर्णो भवता बहु योजनः । तलप्रहाराभिहतो मैनाकोऽपि नगोत्तमः
madarthaṁ sāgaras tīrṇo bhavatā bahuyojanaḥ talaprahārābhihato maināko'pi nagottamaḥ
For my sake you crossed the ocean, many yojanas wide. Struck by the touch of your palm, even the excellent mountain Mainaka—
Verse 4 (skanda.3.46.4)
नागमाता च सुरसा मदर्थं भवता जिता । छायाग्रहां महाक्रूराम वधीद्राक्षसीं भवान्
nāgamātā ca surasā madarthaṁ bhavatā jitā chāyāgrahāṁ mahākrūrām avadhīd rākṣasīṁ bhavān
and Surasa, mother of the nagas, was conquered by you for my sake. You slew the exceedingly cruel shadow-seizing demoness (Simhika).
Verse 5 (skanda.3.46.5)
सायं सुवेलमासाद्य लंकामाहत्य पाणिना । अयासी रावणगृहं मदर्थं त्वं महाकपे
sāyaṁ suvelam āsādya laṅkām āhatya pāṇinā ayāsī rāvaṇagṛhaṁ madarthaṁ tvaṁ mahākape
O great monkey, having reached Suvela in the evening, striking Lanka with your hand, you went, for my sake, to Ravana's house.
Verse 6 (skanda.3.46.6)
सीतामन्विष्य लंकायां रात्रौ गतभयो भवान् । अदृष्ट्वा जानकीं पश्चादशोकवनिकां ययौ
sītām anviṣya laṅkāyāṁ rātrau gatabhayo bhavān adṛṣṭvā jānakīṁ paścād aśokavanikāṁ yayau
In Lanka, at night, fearlessly, you searched for Sita. Not finding Janaki, you then went to the Ashoka grove.
Verse 7 (skanda.3.46.7)
नमस्कृत्य च वैदेहीमभिज्ञानं प्रदाय च । चूडामणिं समादाय मदर्थं जानकीकरात्
namaskṛtya ca vaidehīm abhijñānaṁ pradāya ca cūḍāmaṇiṁ samādāya madarthaṁ jānakīkarāt
Bowing to Vaidehi, and giving her the token of recognition, taking the crest-jewel from Janaki's hand for me,
Verse 8 (skanda.3.46.8)
अशोकवनिकावृक्षानभांक्षीस्त्वं महाकपे । ततस्त्वशीतिसाहस्रान्किंकरान्नाम राक्षसान्
aśokavanikāvṛkṣān abhāṅkṣīs tvaṁ mahākape tatas tv aśītisāhasrān kiṅkarān nāma rākṣasān
O great monkey, you broke the trees of the Ashoka grove. Then you slew eighty thousand demons named Kinkaras,
Verse 9 (skanda.3.46.9)
रावणप्रतिमान्युद्धे पत्यश्वेभरथाकुलान् । अवधीस्त्वं मदर्थे वै महाबलपराक्रमान्
rāvaṇapratimān yuddhe patyaśvebharathākulān avadhīs tvaṁ madarthe vai mahābalaparākramān
who were the equal of Ravana in battle, accompanied by foot-soldiers, horses, elephants, and chariots, of great might and prowess — those you slew for my sake.
Verse 10 (skanda.3.46.10)
ततः प्रहस्ततनयं जंबुमालिनमागतम् । अवधीन्मंत्रितनयान्सप्त सप्तार्चिवर्चसः
tataḥ prahastatanayaṁ jambumālinam āgatam avadhīn mantritanayān sapta saptārcivarcasaḥ
Then, when Prahasta's son Jambumali came, you slew him, and also the seven ministers' sons, radiant as fire.
Verse 11 (skanda.3.46.11)
पंच सेनापतीन्पश्चादनयस्त्वं यमालयम् । कुमारमक्षमवधीस्ततस्त्वं रणमूर्धनि
pañca senāpatīn paścād anayas tvaṁ yamālayam kumāram akṣam avadhīs tatas tvaṁ raṇamūrdhani
Then you sent the five generals to the abode of Yama. Then, at the forefront of the battle, you slew the prince Aksha.
Verse 12 (skanda.3.46.12)
तत इन्द्रजिता नीतो राक्षसेंद्र सभां शुभाम् । तत्र लंकेश्वरं वाचा तृणीकृत्यावमन्य च
tata indrajitā nīto rākṣasendrasabhāṁ śubhām tatra laṅkeśvaraṁ vācā tṛṇīkṛtyāvamanya ca
Then, brought by Indrajit into the demon king's splendid assembly, there having reduced the lord of Lanka to a mere straw with your speech and dishonored him,
Verse 13 (skanda.3.46.13)
अभांक्षीस्त्वं पुरीं लंकां मदर्थं वायुनंदन । पुनः प्रतिनिवृत्तस्त्वमृष्यमूकं महागिरिम्
abhāṅkṣīs tvaṁ purīṁ laṅkāṁ madarthaṁ vāyunandana punaḥ pratinivṛttas tvam ṛṣyamūkaṁ mahāgirim
O son of the Wind, you burned the city of Lanka for my sake. Then, having returned, you came back to the great mountain Rishyamuka.
Verse 14 (skanda.3.46.14)
एवमादि महादुःखं मदर्थं प्राप्तवानसि । त्वमत्र भूतले शेषे मम शोकमुदीरयन्
evamādi mahāduḥkhaṁ madarthaṁ prāptavān asi tvam atra bhūtale śeṣe mama śokam udīrayan
Thus, from the beginning, you have endured great suffering for my sake. Now you lie here upon this earth, deepening my grief,
Verse 15 (skanda.3.46.15)
अहं प्राणान्परित्यक्ष्ये मृतोऽसि यदि वायुज । सीतया मम किं कार्यं लक्ष्मणेनानुजेन वा
ahaṁ prāṇān parityakṣye mṛto'si yadi vāyuja sītayā mama kiṁ kāryaṁ lakṣmaṇenānujena vā
O son of the Wind, if you are dead, I too shall give up my life. What use is Sita to me, or my younger brother Lakshmana?
Verse 16 (skanda.3.46.16)
भरतेनापि किं कार्यं शत्रुघ्नेन श्रियापि वा । राज्येनापि न मे कार्यं परेतस्त्वं कपे यदि
bharatenāpi kiṁ kāryaṁ śatrughnena śriyāpi vā rājyenāpi na me kāryaṁ paretas tvaṁ kape yadi
What use is Bharata to me, or Shatrughna, or even royal fortune? O monkey, if you are dead, I have no use even for the kingdom.
Verse 17 (skanda.3.46.17)
उत्तिष्ठ हनुमन्वत्स किं शेषेऽद्य महीतले । शय्यां कुरु महाबाहो निद्रार्थं मम वानर
uttiṣṭha hanuman vatsa kiṁ śeṣe'dya mahītale śayyāṁ kuru mahābāho nidrārthaṁ mama vānara
Rise, child Hanuman — why do you lie today upon the earth? O mighty-armed one, O monkey, make my bed for sleep.
Verse 18 (skanda.3.46.18)
कन्दमूलफलानि त्वमाहारार्थं ममाहर । स्नातुमद्य गमिष्यामि शीघ्रं कलशमानय
kandamūlaphalāni tvam āhārārthaṁ mamāhara snātum adya gamiṣyāmi śīghraṁ kalaśam ānaya
Bring me roots, bulbs, and fruits for food. Today I shall go to bathe — quickly bring the water-pot.
Verse 19 (skanda.3.46.19)
अजिनानि च वासांसि दर्भांश्च समुपाहर । ब्रह्मास्त्रेणावबद्धोऽहं मोचितश्च त्वया हरे
ajināni ca vāsāṁsi darbhāṁś ca samupāhara brahmāstreṇāvabaddho'haṁ mocitaś ca tvayā hare
Bring deerskins, garments, and kusha grass. O monkey, bound by the Brahmastra, I was freed by you,
Verse 20 (skanda.3.46.20)
लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा ह्यौषधानयनेन वै । लक्ष्मणप्राणदाता त्वं पौलस्त्यमदनाशनः
lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā hy auṣadhānayanena vai lakṣmaṇaprāṇadātā tvaṁ paulastyamadanāśanaḥ
together with my brother Lakshmana, by bringing the healing herbs. You are the giver of life to Lakshmana, and the destroyer of the pride of the descendant of Pulastya.
Verse 21 (skanda.3.46.21)
सहायेन त्वया युद्धे राक्षसा न्रावणादिकान् । निहत्यातिबलान्वीरानवापं मैथिलीमहम्
sahāyena tvayā yuddhe rākṣasān rāvaṇādikān nihatyātibalān vīrān avāpaṁ maithilīm aham
With your help in battle, having slain Ravana and the other exceedingly powerful heroic demons, I obtained Maithili.
Verse 22 (skanda.3.46.22)
हनूमन्नंजनासूनो सीताशोकविनाशन । कथमेवं परित्यज्य लक्ष्मणं मां च जानकीम्
hanūman añjanāsūno sītāśokavināśana katham evaṁ parityajya lakṣmaṇaṁ māṁ ca jānakīm
O Hanuman, son of Anjana, O destroyer of Sita's sorrow, how, thus abandoning Lakshmana, and me, and Janaki,
Verse 23 (skanda.3.46.23)
अप्रापयित्वायोध्यां त्वं किमर्थं गतवानसि । क्व गतोसि महावीर महाराक्षसकण्टक
aprāpayitvāyodhyāṁ tvaṁ kimarthaṁ gatavān asi kva gato'si mahāvīra mahārākṣasakaṇṭaka
without bringing us to Ayodhya, why have you departed? O great hero, O thorn in the side of the great demons, where have you gone?
Verse 24 (skanda.3.46.24)
इति पश्यन्मुखं तस्य निर्वाक्यं रघुनंदनः । प्ररुदन्नश्रुजालेन सेचयामास वायुजम्
iti paśyan mukhaṁ tasya nirvākyaṁ raghunandanaḥ prarudann aśrujālena secayāmāsa vāyujam
Thus, gazing upon his speechless face, Raghunandana wept and drenched the son of the Wind with a stream of tears.
Verse 25 (skanda.3.46.25)
वायुपुत्रस्ततो मूर्च्छामपहाय शनैर्द्विजाः । पौलस्त्यभयसंत्रस्तलोकरक्षार्थमागतम्
vāyuputras tato mūrcchām apahāya śanair dvijāḥ paulastyabhayasaṁtrastalokarakṣārtham āgatam
O brahmins, then the son of the Wind, slowly recovering from his swoon, beheld before him the one who had come to protect the world terrified by fear of the descendant of Pulastya,

आश्रित्य मानुषं भावं नारायणमजं विभुम् । जानकीलक्ष्मणयुतं कपिभिः परिवारितम्
āśritya mānuṣaṁ bhāvaṁ nārāyaṇam ajaṁ vibhum jānakīlakṣmaṇayutaṁ kapibhiḥ parivāritam
the unborn, all-pervading Narayana, having assumed a human form, together with Janaki and Lakshmana, surrounded by monkeys,
Verse 27 (skanda.3.46.27)
कालांभोधरसंकाशं रणधूलिसमुक्षितम् । जटामण्डलशोभाढ्यं पुण्डरीकायतेक्षणम्
kālāmbhodharasaṅkāśaṁ raṇadhūlisamukṣitam jaṭāmaṇḍalaśobhāḍhyaṁ puṇḍarīkāyatekṣaṇam
dark as a rain-cloud, covered with the dust of battle, adorned with the beauty of matted locks, lotus-eyed,
Verse 28 (skanda.3.46.28)
खिन्नं च बहुशो युद्धे ददर्श रघुनंदनम् । स्तूयमानममित्रघ्नं देवर्षिपितृकिन्नरैः
khinnaṁ ca bahuśo yuddhe dadarśa raghunandanam stūyamānam amitraghnaṁ devarṣipitṛkinnaraiḥ
wearied from many battles — that Raghunandana, destroyer of enemies, being praised by gods, sages, ancestors, and kinnaras.
Verse 29 (skanda.3.46.29)
दृष्ट्वा दाशरथिं रामं कृपाबहुलचेतसम् । रघुनाथकरस्पर्शपूर्णगात्रः स वानरः
dṛṣṭvā dāśarathiṁ rāmaṁ kṛpābahulacetasam raghunāthakaraspaśapūrṇagātraḥ sa vānaraḥ
Seeing Rama, son of Dasharatha, his heart full of compassion, that monkey, his limbs filled with the touch of Raghunatha's hand,
Verse 30 (skanda.3.46.30)
पतित्वा दण्डवद्भूमौ कृतांजलिपुटो द्विजाः । अस्तौषीज्जानकीनाथं स्तोत्रैः श्रुतिमनोहरैः
patitvā daṇḍavad bhūmau kṛtāñjaliputo dvijāḥ astauṣīj jānakīnāthaṁ stotraiḥ śrutimanoharaiḥ
O brahmins, falling flat upon the ground, with joined palms, praised the Lord of Janaki with hymns pleasing to the ear.
Verse 31 (skanda.3.46.31)
हनूमानुवाच । नमो रामाय हरये विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे । आदिदेवाय देवाय पुराणाय गदाभृते
hanūmān uvāca namo rāmāya haraye viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave ādidevāya devāya purāṇāya gadābhṛte
Hanuman said: Salutation to Rama, to Hari, to Vishnu, the powerful one, to the primal God, to the Deva, to the ancient one, to the mace-bearer.
Verse 32 (skanda.3.46.32)
विष्टरे पुष्पकं नित्यं निविष्टाय महात्मने । प्रहृष्टवानरानीकजुष्टपादांबुजाय ते
viṣṭare puṣpakaṁ nityaṁ niviṣṭāya mahātmane prahṛṣṭavānarānīkajuṣṭapādāmbujāya te
To you, great soul, ever seated upon the throne of the Pushpaka, whose lotus feet are attended by the delighted army of monkeys —
Verse 33 (skanda.3.46.33)
निष्पिष्ट राक्षसेंद्राय जगदिष्टविधायिने । नमः सहस्रशिरसे सहस्रचरणाय च
niṣpiṣṭarākṣasendrāya jagadiṣṭavidhāyine namaḥ sahasraśirase sahasracaraṇāya ca
who crushed the lord of the demons, who accomplishes the world's desired good, whose heads are a thousand, whose feet are a thousand — salutation.
Verse 34 (skanda.3.46.34)
सहस्राक्षाय शुद्धाय राघवाय च विष्णवे । भक्तार्तिहारिणे तुभ्यं सीतायाः पतये नमः
sahasrākṣāya śuddhāya rāghavāya ca viṣṇave bhaktārtihāriṇe tubhyaṁ sītāyāḥ pataye namaḥ
Whose eyes are a thousand, pure, Raghava, Vishnu, remover of the afflictions of devotees, husband of Sita — salutation to you.
Verse 35 (skanda.3.46.35)
हरये नारसिंहाय दैत्यराजविदारिणे । नमस्तुभ्यं वराहाय दंष्ट्रोद्धृतवसुन्धर
haraye nārasiṁhāya daityarājavidāriṇe namas tubhyaṁ varāhāya daṁṣṭroddhṛtavasundhara
Salutation to Hari, to the Man-Lion form, who tore apart the king of demons. Salutation to you in the Boar form, who raised up the earth on your tusk.
Verse 36 (skanda.3.46.36)
त्रिविक्रमाय भवते बलियज्ञ विभेदिने । नमो वामनरूपाय नमो मंदरधारिणे
trivikramāya bhavate baliyajñavibhedine namo vāmanarūpāya namo mandaradhāriṇe
Salutation to you, the Trivikrama form, who disrupted Bali's sacrifice. Salutation to the Vamana form, salutation to the bearer of Mount Mandara.
Verse 37 (skanda.3.46.37)
नमस्ते मत्स्यरूपाय त्रयीपालनकारिणे । नमः परशुरामाय क्षत्रियांतकराय ते
namaste matsyarūpāya trayīpālanakāriṇe namaḥ paraśurāmāya kṣatriyāntakarāya te
Salutation to you in the Fish form, protector of the three Vedas. Salutation to you as Parashurama, ender of the kshatriyas.
Verse 38 (skanda.3.46.38)
नमस्ते राक्षसघ्नाय नमो राघवरूपिणे । महादेव महाभीम महाकोदण्डभेदिने
namaste rākṣasaghnāya namo rāghavarūpiṇe mahādeva mahābhīma mahākodaṇḍabhedine
Salutation to you, destroyer of demons, salutation to the Raghava form. O great god, O greatly fearsome one, O breaker of the great bow!
Verse 39 (skanda.3.46.39)
क्षत्रियांतकरक्रूरभार्गवत्रासकारिणे । नमोऽस्त्वहिल्या संतापहारिणे चापहारिणे
kṣatriyāntakarakrūrabhārgavatrāsakāriṇe namo'stv ahilyāsantāpahāriṇe cāpahāriṇe
Salutation to you, who struck fear even into the cruel Bhargava, ender of kshatriyas. Salutation to the remover of Ahalya's anguish, wielder of the bow.
Verse 40 (skanda.3.46.40)
नागायुतवलोपेतताटकादेहहारिणे । शिलाकठिनविस्तारवालिवक्षोविभेदिने
nāgāyutabalopetatāṭakādehahāriṇe śilākaṭhinavistāravālivakṣovibhedine
Destroyer of Tataka's body, endowed with the strength of ten thousand elephants; piercer of Vali's chest, hard and vast as stone,

नमो माया मृगोन्माथकारिणेऽज्ञानहारिणे । दशस्यंदनदुःखाब्धिशोषणागस्त्यरूपिणे
namo māyāmṛgonmāthakāriṇe'jñānahāriṇe daśasyandanaduḥkhābdhiśoṣaṇāgastyarūpiṇe
Salutation to the destroyer of the illusory deer, remover of ignorance, in the form of Agastya who dried up the ocean of sorrow that was the ten-headed one's chariot.
Verse 42 (skanda.3.46.42)
अनेकोर्मिसमाधूतसमुद्रमदहारिणे । मैथिलीमानसां भोजभानवे लोकसाक्षिणे
anekormisamādhūtasamudramadahāriṇe maithilīmānasāṁbhojabhānave lokasākṣiṇe
Remover of the pride of the ocean, agitated by countless waves, the very sun to the lotus of Maithili's heart, witness of the worlds,
Verse 43 (skanda.3.46.43)
राजेंद्राय नमस्तुभ्यं जानकीपतये हरे । तारकब्रह्मणे तुभ्यं नमो राजीवलोचन
rājendrāya namas tubhyaṁ jānakīpataye hare tārakabrahmaṇe tubhyaṁ namo rājīvalocana
salutation to you, foremost of kings. O Hari, Lord of Janaki, salutation to you, the liberating Brahman itself, O lotus-eyed one.
Verse 44 (skanda.3.46.44)
रामाय रामचन्द्राय वरेण्याय सुखात्मने । विश्वामित्रप्रियायेदं नमः खरविदारिणे
rāmāya rāmacandrāya vareṇyāya sukhātmane viśvāmitrapriyāyedaṁ namaḥ kharavidāriṇe
This salutation to Rama, to Ramachandra, the most worthy of choice, whose very nature is bliss, beloved of Vishvamitra, render of Khara.
Verse 45 (skanda.3.46.45)
प्रसीद देवदेवेश भक्तानामभयप्रद । रक्ष मां करु णासिंधो रामचन्द्र नमोऽस्तु ते
prasīda devadeveśa bhaktānām abhayaprada rakṣa māṁ karuṇāsindho rāmacandra namo'stu te
Be gracious, O Lord of the gods of gods, O bestower of fearlessness upon your devotees. Protect me, O ocean of compassion Ramachandra, salutation to you.
Verse 46 (skanda.3.46.46)
रक्ष मां वेदवचसामप्यगोचर राघव । पाहि मां कृपया राम शरणं त्वामुपैम्यहम्
rakṣa māṁ vedavacasām apy agocara rāghava pāhi māṁ kṛpayā rāma śaraṇaṁ tvām upaimy aham
Protect me, O Raghava, unfathomable even by the words of the Vedas. Save me with grace, O Rama; I take refuge in you.
Verse 47 (skanda.3.46.47)
रघुवीर महामोहमपाकुरु ममाधुना । स्नाने चाचमने भुक्तो जाग्रत्स्वप्नसुषुप्तिषु
raghuvīra mahāmoham apākuru mamādhunā snāne cācamane bhukto jāgratsvapnasuṣuptiṣu
O hero of the Raghus, now dispel my great delusion. In bathing, in sipping water, in eating, in the waking, dreaming, and deep-sleep states,
Verse 48 (skanda.3.46.48)
सर्वावस्थासु सर्वत्र पाहि मां रघुनंदन । महिमानं तव स्तोतुं कः समर्थो जगत्त्रये
sarvāvasthāsu sarvatra pāhi māṁ raghunandana mahimānaṁ tava stotuṁ kaḥ samartho jagattraye
O Raghunandana, in all states, everywhere, protect me. Who in the three worlds is capable of praising your greatness?
Verse 49 (skanda.3.46.49)
त्वमेव त्वन्महत्त्वं वै जानासि रघुनंदन । इति स्तुत्वा वायुपुत्रो रामचंद्रं घृणानिधिम्
tvam eva tvanmahattvaṁ vai jānāsi raghunandana iti stutvā vāyuputro rāmacandraṁ ghṛṇānidhim
You alone, O Raghunandana, know your own greatness. Having thus praised Ramachandra, the treasury of compassion, the son of the Wind,

सीतामप्यभितुष्टाव भक्तियुक्तेन चेतसा । जानकि त्वां नमस्यामि सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम्
sītām apy abhituṣṭāva bhaktiyuktena cetasā jānaki tvāṁ namasyāmi sarvapāpapraṇāśinīm
with a devotion-filled heart, praised Sita too: 'O Janaki, I bow to you, destroyer of all sins,

दारिद्र्यरणसंहर्त्रीं भक्तानामिष्टदायिनीम् । विदेहराजतनयां राघवानंदकारिणीम्
dāridryaraṇasaṁhartrīṁ bhaktānām iṣṭadāyinīm videgharājatanayāṁ rāghavānandakāriṇīm
destroyer of poverty and conflict, granter of devotees' desires, daughter of the king of Videha, bringer of joy to Raghava,

भूमेर्दुहितरं विद्यां नमामि प्रकृतिं शिवाम् । पौलस्त्यैश्वर्यसंहर्त्रीं भक्ताभीष्टां सरस्वतीम्
bhūmer duhitaraṁ vidyāṁ namāmi prakṛtiṁ śivām paulastyaiśvaryasaṁhartrīṁ bhaktābhīṣṭāṁ sarasvatīm
daughter of the Earth, embodiment of knowledge, the auspicious primordial Nature — I bow to you. Destroyer of the might of Pulastya's descendant, dear to devotees, in the form of Sarasvati,

पतिव्रताधुरीणां त्वां नमामि जनकात्मजाम् । अनुग्रहपरामृद्धिमनघां हरिवल्लभाम्
pativratādhurīṇāṁ tvāṁ namāmi janakātmajām anugrahaparām ṛddhim anaghāṁ harivallabhām
foremost among the devoted wives, daughter of Janaka, I bow to you. Ever inclined toward grace, the embodiment of prosperity, sinless, beloved of Hari,

नमामि चन्द्रभगिनीं सीतां सर्वांगसुंदरीम् । नमामि धर्मनिलयां करुणां वेदमातरम्
namāmi candrabhaginīṁ sītāṁ sarvāṅgasundarīm namāmi dharmanilayāṁ karuṇāṁ vedamātaram
I bow to Sita, sister of the moon, beautiful in every limb. I bow to the abode of dharma, embodiment of compassion, mother of the Vedas.

पद्मालयां पद्महस्तां विष्णुवक्षस्थलालयाम् । नमामि चन्द्रनिलयां सीतां चन्द्रनिभाननाम्
padmālayāṁ padmahastāṁ viṣṇuvakṣasthalālayām namāmi candranilayāṁ sītāṁ candranibhānanām
who dwells in the lotus, whose hand holds a lotus, who dwells in Vishnu's breast — I bow to Sita, dweller of the moon, whose face is like the moon.

आह्लादरूपिणीं सिद्धिं शिवां शिवकरीं सतीम् । नमामि विश्वजननीं रामचन्द्रेष्टवल्लभाम् । सीतां सर्वानवद्यांगीं भजामि सततं हृदा
āhlādarūpiṇīṁ siddhiṁ śivāṁ śivakarīṁ satīm namāmi viśvajananīṁ rāmacandreṣṭavallabhām sītāṁ sarvānavadyāṅgīṁ bhajāmi satataṁ hṛdā
Embodiment of delight, embodiment of accomplishment, auspicious, bestower of auspiciousness, the chaste one, mother of the universe, most beloved wife of Ramachandra — I bow. I ever worship, with my heart, Sita, faultless in every limb.

O best of brahmins, drenched with tears of joy, sat silent. This sin-destroying hymn spoken by the son of the Wind—

स्तोत्रं श्रीरामचंद्रस्य सीतायाः पठतेऽन्वहम् । स नरो महदैश्वर्यमश्नुते वांछितं स दा
stotraṁ śrīrāmacandrasya sītāyāḥ paṭhate'nvaham sa naro mahadaiśvaryam aśnute vāñchitaṁ sadā
whoever recites this hymn to Shri Ramachandra and Sita daily, that man ever obtains great prosperity, his heart's desire.
Verse 61 (skanda.3.46.61)
अनेकक्षेत्रधान्यानि गाश्च दोग्ध्रीः पयस्विनीः । आयुर्विद्याश्च पुत्रांश्च भार्यामपि मनोरमाम्
anekakṣetradhānyāni gāś ca dogdhrīḥ payasvinīḥ āyurvidyāś ca putrāṁś ca bhāryām api manoramām
grain from many fields, milk-yielding cows, longevity, knowledge, sons, and a beautiful wife too,

एतत्स्तोत्रं सकृ द्विप्राः पठन्नाप्नोत्यसंशयः । एतत्स्तोत्रस्य पाठेन नरकं नैव यास्यति
etat stotraṁ sakṛd viprāḥ paṭhann āpnoty asaṁśayaḥ etat stotrasya pāṭhena narakaṁ naiva yāsyati
O brahmins, whoever recites this hymn even once obtains without doubt. By reciting this hymn, one does not go to hell at all.
Verse 63 (skanda.3.46.63)
ब्रह्महत्यादिपापानि नश्यंति सुमहांत्यपि । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो देहांते मुक्तिमाप्नुयात्
brahmahatyādipāpāni naśyanti sumahānty api sarvapāpavinirmukto dehānte muktim āpnuyāt
Even the very great sins beginning with the slaying of a brahmin are destroyed. Freed from all sins, at the end of the body he obtains liberation.
Verse 64 (skanda.3.46.64)
इति स्तुतो जगन्नाथो वायुपुत्रेण राघवः । सीतया सहितो विप्रा हनूमंतमथाब्रवीत्
iti stuto jagannātho vāyuputreṇa rāghavaḥ sītayā sahito viprā hanūmantam athābravīt
Thus praised by the son of the Wind, Raghava, Lord of the world, O brahmins, together with Sita, then said this to Hanuman.

श्रीराम उवाच । अज्ञानाद्वा नरश्रेष्ठ त्वयेदं साहसं कृतम् । ब्रह्मणा विष्णुना वापि शक्रादित्रिदशैरपि
śrīrāma uvāca ajñānād vā naraśreṣṭha tvayedaṁ sāhasaṁ kṛtam brahmaṇā viṣṇunā vāpi śakrādi tridaśair api
Shri Rama said: O best of men, out of ignorance you have committed this daring act. Not even by Brahma, or Vishnu, or Indra and all the gods,

नेदं लिंगं समुद्धर्तुं शक्यते स्थापितं मया । महादेवापराधेन पतितोऽस्यद्य मूर्च्छितः
nedaṁ liṅgaṁ samuddhartuṁ śakyate sthāpitaṁ mayā mahādevāparādhena patito'sy adya mūrcchitaḥ
can this linga, established by me, be uprooted. It was because of the offense to Mahadeva that you fell unconscious today.
Verse 67 (skanda.3.46.67)
इतः परं मा क्रियतां द्रोहः सांबस्य शूलिनः । अद्यारभ्य त्विदं कुंडं तव नाम्ना जगत्त्रये
itaḥ paraṁ mā kriyatāṁ drohaḥ sāmbasya śūlinaḥ adyārabhya tv idaṁ kuṇḍaṁ tava nāmnā jagattraye
Henceforth, commit no more offense against Shiva, the trident-bearer, together with Amba. From today, this pool shall, in your very name, throughout the three worlds,

ख्यातिं प्रयातु यत्र त्वं पतितो वानरोत्तम । महापातकसंघानां नाशः स्यादत्र मज्जनात्
khyātiṁ prayātu yatra tvaṁ patito vānarottama mahāpātakasaṅghānāṁ nāśaḥ syād atra majjanāt
attain fame, in this spot where you fell, O best of monkeys. Bathing here shall destroy multitudes of great sins.
Verse 69 (skanda.3.46.69)
महादेवजटाजाता गौतमी सरितां वरा । अश्वमेधसहस्रस्य फलदा स्नायिनां नृणाम्
mahādevajaṭājātā gautamī saritāṁ varā aśvamedhasahasrasya phaladā snāyināṁ nṛṇām
The Gautami (Godavari), born from Mahadeva's matted locks, foremost of rivers, grants men who bathe in it the fruit of a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices.
Verse 70 (skanda.3.46.70)
ततः शतगुणा गंगा यमुना च सरस्वती । एतन्नदीत्रयं यत्र स्थले प्रवहते कपे
tataḥ śataguṇā gaṅgā yamunā ca sarasvatī etan nadītrayaṁ yatra sthale pravahate kape
A hundred times more than that is the Ganga, and the Yamuna, and the Sarasvati. O monkey, at that spot where these three rivers flow together,

मिलित्वा तत्र तु स्नानं सहस्रगुणितं स्मृतम् । नदीष्वेतासु यत्स्नानात्फलं पुंसां भवेत्कपे
militvā tatra tu snānaṁ sahasraguṇitaṁ smṛtam nadīṣv etāsu yat snānāt phalaṁ puṁsāṁ bhavet kape
bathing there is declared to bear a thousandfold merit. O monkey, whatever fruit men obtain from bathing in these rivers,

तत्फलं तव कुंडेऽस्मिन्स्नानात्प्राप्नोत्यसंशयम् । दुर्लभं प्राप्य मानुष्यं हनूमत्कुंडतीरतः
tat phalaṁ tava kuṇḍe'smin snānāt prāpnoty asaṁśayam durlabhaṁ prāpya mānuṣyaṁ hanūmatkuṇḍatīrataḥ
that same fruit is obtained, without doubt, by bathing in this pool of yours. Having obtained the rare gift of human birth, at the bank of Hanumatkunda,

श्राद्धं न कुरुते यस्तु भक्तियुक्तेन चेतसा । निराशास्तस्य पितरः प्रयांति कुपिताः कपे
śrāddhaṁ na kurute yas tu bhaktiyuktena cetasā nirāśās tasya pitaraḥ prayānti kupitāḥ kape
whoever does not perform the ancestral rites with a devotion-filled heart — O monkey, his ancestors, disappointed and angered, depart.
Verse 74 (skanda.3.46.74)
कुप्यंति मुनयोऽप्यस्मै देवाः सेंद्राः सचारणाः । न दत्तं न हुतं येन हनूमत्कुंडतीरतः
kupyanti munayo'py asmai devāḥ sendrāḥ sacāraṇāḥ na dattaṁ na hutaṁ yena hanūmatkuṇḍatīrataḥ
The sages too are angered at him, and the gods together with Indra and the charanas, who has given no gift and offered no oblation at the bank of Hanumatkunda.
Verse 75 (skanda.3.46.75)
वृथाजीवित एवासाविहामुत्र च दुःखभाक् । हनूमत्कुंडसविधे येन दत्तं तिलोदकम् । मोदंते पितरस्तस्य घृतकुल्याः पिबंति च
vṛthājīvita evāsāv ihāmutra ca duḥkhabhāk hanūmatkuṇḍasavidhe yena dattaṁ tilodakam modante pitaras tasya ghṛtakulyāḥ pibanti ca
He lives in vain, and is a sharer of sorrow both here and in the world beyond. But he who has offered water mixed with sesame near Hanumatkunda — his ancestors rejoice, and drink from streams of ghee.
Verse 76 (skanda.3.46.76)
श्रीसूत उवाच । श्रुत्वैतद्वचनं विप्रा रामेणोक्तं स वायुजः
śrīsūta uvāca śrutvaitad vacanaṁ viprā rāmeṇoktaṁ sa vāyujaḥ
Shri Suta said: O brahmins, having heard this word spoken by Rama, that son of the Wind,
Verse 77 (skanda.3.46.77)
उत्तरे रामनाथस्य लिंगं स्वेनाहृतं मुदा । आज्ञया रामचन्द्रस्य स्थापयामास वायुजः
uttare rāmanāthasya liṅgaṁ svenāhṛtaṁ mudā ājñayā rāmacandrasya sthāpayāmāsa vāyujaḥ
to the north of Ramanatha, established with joy, by Ramachandra's command, the linga he himself had brought.
Verse 78 (skanda.3.46.78)
प्रत्यक्षमेव सर्वेषां कपिलांगूलवेष्टितम् । हरोपि तत्पुच्छजा तं बिभर्ति च वलित्रयम् । तदुत्तरायां ककुभि गौरीं संस्थापयन्मुदा
pratyakṣam eva sarveṣāṁ kapilāṅgūlaveṣṭitam haro'pi tatpucchajā taṁ bibharti ca valitrayam tad uttarāyāṁ kakubhi gaurīṁ saṁsthāpayan mudā
visibly before all, wrapped by the monkey's tail. Even Hara bears those three coils born of his tail. To its north, Gauri was joyfully established.
Verse 79 (skanda.3.46.79)
श्रीसूत उवाच । एवं वः कथितं विप्रा यदर्थं राघवेण तु । लिंगं प्रतिष्ठितं सेतौ भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं नृणाम्
śrīsūta uvāca evaṁ vaḥ kathitaṁ viprā yadarthaṁ rāghaveṇa tu liṅgaṁ pratiṣṭhitaṁ setau bhuktimuktipradaṁ nṛṇām
Shri Suta said: O brahmins, thus have I told you for what purpose the linga, granting both enjoyment and liberation to men, was established at the Setu by Raghava.
Verse 80 (skanda.3.46.80)
यः पठेदिममध्यायं शृणुयाद्वा समाहितः । स विधूयेह पापानि शिवलोके महीयते
yaḥ paṭhed imam adhyāyaṁ śṛṇuyād vā samāhitaḥ sa vidhūyeha pāpāni śivaloke mahīyate
Whoever reads this chapter, or hears it with focused attention, having washed away his sins here, is honored in Shivaloka.
