Brahma Khanda · Chapter 57
The Description of Right Conduct
Verse 1 (skanda.3.57.1)
vyāsa uvāca ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi dharmāraṇyanivāsinā yatkāryaṁ puruṣeṇeha gārhasthyamanutiṣṭhatā
Vyasa said: Now, next, I shall tell what a man dwelling in Dharmaranya and observing the householder's life ought to do here.
Verse 2 (skanda.3.57.2)
dharmāraṇyeṣu ye jātā brāhmaṇāḥ śuddhavaṁśajāḥ aṣṭādaśasahasrāśca kājeśaiśca vinirmitāḥ
The brahmins born in Dharmaranya, of pure lineage, eighteen thousand in number, were fashioned by the Kajesha deities.
Verse 3 (skanda.3.57.3)
sadācārāḥ pavitrāśca brāhmaṇā brahmavittamāḥ teṣāṁ darśanamātreṇa mahāpāpairvimucyate
Those brahmins are of good conduct, pure, and foremost in the knowledge of Brahman; by the mere sight of them, one is freed from great sins.
Verse 4 (skanda.3.57.4)
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca pārāśarya samākhyāhi sadācāraṁ ca me prabho ācārāddharmamāpnoti ācārāllabhate phalam ācārācchriyamāpnoti tadācāraṁ vadasva me
Yudhishthira said: O son of Parashara, O lord, tell me of right conduct. Through conduct one attains dharma, through conduct one obtains its fruit, through conduct one attains prosperity — so tell me of that conduct.
Verse 5 (skanda.3.57.5)
vyāsa uvāca sthāvarāḥ kṛmayo'bjāśca pakṣiṇaḥ paśavo narāḥ krameṇa dhārmikāstveta etebhyo dhārmikāḥ surāḥ
Vyasa said: Immobile beings, worms, water-creatures, birds, beasts, and men — these are, in ascending order, more and more righteous; and more righteous than these are the gods.
Verse 6 (skanda.3.57.6)
sahasrabhāgātprathame dvitīyānukramāstathā sarva ete mahābhāgāḥ pāpānmuktisamāśrayāḥ
In each successive rank, merit increases a thousandfold over the one before it; all these fortunate beings serve as a refuge for release from sin.
Verse 7 (skanda.3.57.7)
caturṇāmapi bhūtānāṁ prāṇino'tīva cottamāḥ prāṇikebhyo'pi muniśreṣṭhāḥ sarve buddhyupajīvinaḥ
Among the four kinds of created beings, those endowed with reasoning are far superior; and among reasoning beings, the sages are the foremost of all.
Verse 8 (skanda.3.57.8)
matimadbhyo narāḥ śreṣṭhāstebhyaḥ śreṣṭhāstu vāḍavāḥ viprebhyo'pi ca vidvāṁso vidvadbhyaḥ kṛtabuddhayaḥ
Among the intelligent, men are the best; better than men are the brahmins; better than brahmins are the learned; and better than the learned are those of matured wisdom.
Verse 9 (skanda.3.57.9)
kṛtadhībhyo'pi kartāraḥ kartṛbhyo brahmatatparāḥ na tebhyo'bhyadhikaḥ kaścittriṣu lokeṣu bhārata
Better than the wise are the doers of good works; and better than doers are those devoted to Brahman. O descendant of Bharata, in the three worlds none is superior to these.
Verse 10 (skanda.3.57.10)
anyonyapūjakāste vai tapovidyāviśeṣataḥ brāhmaṇo brahmaṇā sṛṣṭaḥ sarvabhūteśvaro yataḥ
They honour one another according to their austerity and learning; and since the brahmin was created by Brahma himself, he is the lord of all beings.
Verse 11 (skanda.3.57.11)
ato jagatsthitaṁ sarvaṁ brāhmaṇo'rhati nāparaḥ sadācāro hi sarvārho nācārādvicyutaḥ punaḥ
Therefore, of all that exists in the world, only the brahmin is worthy — none other; for right conduct alone deserves all honour, and one who has fallen from it deserves it no more.
Verse 12 (skanda.3.57.12)
tasmādvipreṇa satataṁ bhāvyamācāraśīlinā vidveṣarāgarahitā anutiṣṭhanti yaṁ mune
Therefore a brahmin should always remain devoted to right conduct — that conduct which, O sage, the good practise free from attachment and aversion.
Verse 13 (skanda.3.57.13)
saddhi yastaṁ sadācāraṁ dharmamūlaṁ vidurbudhāḥ lakṣaṇaiḥ parihīno'pi samyagācāratatparaḥ
For the wise know that very right conduct to be the root of dharma; even one lacking other marks of distinction stands well, if he is devoted to proper conduct.
Verse 14 (skanda.3.57.14)
śraddāluranasūyuśca naro jīvetsamāḥ śatam śrutismṛtibhyāmuditaṁ sveṣusveṣu ca karmasu
A man full of faith and free from envy, following in each of his own duties what is declared by Shruti and Smriti, lives out a full hundred years.
Verse 15 (skanda.3.57.15)
sadācāraṁ niṣeveta dharmamūlamataṁdritaḥ durācārarato loke garhaṇīyaḥ pumānbhavet
One should diligently practise right conduct, the root of dharma, without laziness; a man devoted to bad conduct becomes contemptible in the world.
Verse 16 (skanda.3.57.16)
vyādhibhiścābhibhūyeta sadālpāyuḥ sudukhabhāk tyājyaṁ karma parādhīnaṁ kāryamātmavaśaṁ sadā
Such a man is ever afflicted with disease, short-lived, and full of suffering. One should give up work that depends on others and always undertake what is within one's own control.
Verse 17 (skanda.3.57.17)
duḥkhī yataḥ parādhīnaḥ sadaivātmavaśaḥ sukhī yasminkarmaṇyaṁtarātmā kriyamāṇe prasīdati
For whoever depends on another is always unhappy, while one who is master of himself is always happy. That work in the doing of which the inner self takes delight —
Verse 18 (skanda.3.57.18)
tadeva karma karttavyaṁ viparītaṁ na ca kvacit prathamaṁ dharmasarvasvaṁ proktaṁ yanniyamā yamāḥ
— that alone should be done, never its opposite. First of all, the yamas and niyamas are declared to be the very essence of dharma.
Verse 19 (skanda.3.57.19)
atasteṣveva vai yatnaḥ kartavyo dharmamicchatā satyaṁ kṣamārtavaṁ dhyānamānṛśaṁsyamahiṁsanam
Therefore one who desires dharma should strive for these alone: truthfulness, forbearance, uprightness, meditation, freedom from cruelty, and non-violence —
Verse 20 (skanda.3.57.20)
damaḥ prasādo mādhuryaṁ mṛduteti yamā daśa śaucaṁ snānaṁ tapo dānaṁ maunejyādhyayanaṁ vratam
— self-restraint, cheerfulness, sweetness, and gentleness: these ten are the yamas. Purity, bathing, austerity, charity, silence, sacrifice, study, vow-keeping —
Verse 21 (skanda.3.57.21)
upoṣaṇopasthadaṇḍo daśaite niyamāḥ smṛtāḥ kāmaṁ krodhaṁ damaṁ mohaṁ mātsaryaṁ lobhameva ca
— fasting and restraint of the organs: these ten are remembered as the niyamas. Desire, anger, self-conceit, delusion, envy, and greed —
Verse 22 (skanda.3.57.22)
amūnṣaḍvairiṇo jitvā sarvatra vijayī bhavet śanaiḥ saṁcinuyāddharmaṁ valmīkaṁ śṛṅgavānyathā
Having conquered these six enemies, one becomes victorious everywhere. Just as an anthill rises high grain by grain, so should one slowly accumulate dharma.
Verse 23 (skanda.3.57.23)
parapīḍāmakurvāṇaḥ paralokasahāyinam dharma eva sahāyī syādamutra parirakṣitaḥ
Without causing pain to others, one should gather dharma, the true helper in the other world; guarded there, dharma alone becomes one's companion.
Verse 24 (skanda.3.57.24)
pitṛmātṛsutabhrātṛyoṣidbaṁdhujanādhikaḥ jāyate caikalaḥ prāṇī mriyate ca tathaikalaḥ
Though surrounded by father, mother, sons, brothers, wife, and kinsfolk, a living being is born alone, and alone it dies.
Verse 25 (skanda.3.57.25)
ekalaḥ sukṛtaṁ bhuṁkte bhuṁkte duṣkṛtamekalaḥ dehe pañcatvamāpanne tyaktvaikaṁ kāṣṭhaloṣṭavat
Alone he enjoys the fruit of his good deeds, and alone he suffers for his bad ones. When the body dissolves into the five elements, all abandon it alone, like a piece of wood or a clod of earth.
Verse 26 (skanda.3.57.26)
bāṁdhavā vimukhā yāṁti dharmo yāṁtamanu vrajet ataḥ saṁcinuyāddharmamatrāmutra sahāyinam
Kinsfolk turn away and depart, but dharma follows the departing soul. Therefore one should accumulate dharma, the helper both here and in the world beyond.
Verse 27 (skanda.3.57.27)
dharmaṁ sahāyinaṁ labdhvā saṁtareddustaraṁ tamaḥ saṁbaṁdhānācarennityamuttamairuttamaiḥ sudhīḥ
Having gained dharma as his companion, one crosses the otherwise impassable darkness. The wise man should always maintain relations with the best of the best —
Verse 28 (skanda.3.57.28)
adhamānadhamāṁstyaktvā kulamutkarṣatāṁ nayet uttamānuttamāneva gacchedhīnāṁśca varjayet brāhmaṇaḥ śreṣṭhatāmeti pratyavāyena śūdratām
— abandoning the low and the lowest, he should raise his family's standing. He should keep company only with the best and shun the base; thus a brahmin attains excellence, but through contrary conduct falls to the state of a shudra.
Verse 29 (skanda.3.57.29)
anadhyayanaśīlaṁ ca sadācāravilaṁghinam sālasaṁ ca durannādaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ bādhateṁtakaḥ
The brahmin who neglects study, transgresses right conduct, is indolent, and eats forbidden food — him death afflicts swiftly.
Verse 30 (skanda.3.57.30)
ato'bhyasyetprayatnena sadācāraṁ sadā dvijaḥ tīrthānyapyabhilaṣyaṁti sadācārisamāgamam
Therefore a twice-born should always diligently practise right conduct; even the sacred fords long for union with a man of good conduct.
Verse 31 (skanda.3.57.31)
rajanīprāṁtayāmārddhaṁ brāhmaḥ samaya ucyate svahitaṁ ciṁtayetprājñastasmiṁścotthāya sarvadā
The latter half of the last watch of night is called the Brahma-hour; the wise man should always rise at that time and reflect on his own welfare.
Verse 32 (skanda.3.57.32)
gajāsyaṁ saṁsmaredādau tata īśaṁ sahāṁbayā śrīraṁgaṁ śrīsametaṁ tu brahmāṇaṁ kamalodbhavam
First one should remember Ganesha, the elephant-faced; then the Lord together with Ambika; then Shriranga together with Shri; and Brahma, born of the lotus.
Verse 33 (skanda.3.57.33)
iṁdrādīnsakalāndevānvasiṣṭhādīnmunīnapi gaṁgāyāḥ saritaḥ sarvāḥ śrīśailāyakhilāṁgirīn
One should remember all the gods headed by Indra, the sages headed by Vasishtha, all the rivers beginning with the Ganga, and all the mountains beginning with Shrishaila.
Verse 34 (skanda.3.57.34)
kṣīrodādīnsamudrāṁśca mānasādisarāṁsi ca vanāni naṁdanādīni dhenūḥ kāmadughādayaḥ
One should remember the oceans beginning with the Ocean of Milk, the lakes beginning with Lake Manasa, the groves beginning with Nandana, and the cows beginning with Kamadhenu.
Verse 35 (skanda.3.57.35)
kalpavṛkṣādivṛkṣāṁśca dhātūnkāṁcanamukhyataḥ divyastrīrurvaśīmukhyāḥ prahrādāvadyānhareḥ priyān
One should remember the trees beginning with the wish-fulfilling Kalpavriksha, the metals chief among which is gold, the celestial women headed by Urvashi, and the beloved devotees of Hari beginning with Prahlada.
Verse 36 (skanda.3.57.36)
jananīcaraṇau smṛtvā sarvatīrthoktamottamau pitaraṁ ca gurūṁścāpi hadi dhyātvā prasannadhīḥ
Having remembered his mother's two feet, declared the best of all sacred fords, and having meditated in his heart upon his father and teachers as well, with a serene mind —
Verse 37 (skanda.3.57.37)
tataścāvaśyakaṁ karttuṁ nairṛtīṁ diśamāvrajet grāmāddhanuḥśataṁ gacchennagarācca caturguṇam
— he should then go in the southwest direction to attend to nature's call, going a hundred bow-lengths from a village, and four times that from a town.
Verse 38 (skanda.3.57.38)
tṛṇairācchādya vasudhāṁ śiraḥ prāvṛtya vāsasā karṇopavīta udagvaktro divase saṁdhyayorapi
Covering the ground with grass, veiling the head with cloth, looping the sacred thread over the ear, he should face north during the day and at both twilights.
Verse 39 (skanda.3.57.39)
viṇmūtre visṛjenmaunī niśāyāṁ dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ na tiṣṭhannāśu no vipra govahnyanilasaṁmukhaḥ
He should void urine and excrement in silence, facing south at night. O brahmin, one should never do so standing, hastily, or facing a cow, fire, or the wind.
Verse 40 (skanda.3.57.40)
na phālakṛṣṭe bhūbhāge na rathyāsevyabhūtale nālokayeddiśo bhāgañjyotiścakraṁ nabho malam
Not on ploughed ground, nor on a well-used roadway should one relieve oneself; nor while looking toward the directions, the wheel of luminaries, or the sky, should one pass waste.
Verse 41 (skanda.3.57.41)
vāmena pāṇinā śiśnaṁ dhṛtvottiṣṭhetprayatnavān atho mṛdaṁ samādadyājjaṁtukarkaravarjitām
Holding the organ with the left hand, he should rise carefully; then he should take earth free of insects and gravel.
Verse 42 (skanda.3.57.42)
vihāya mūṣakotkhātāṁ cocchiṣṭāṁ keśasaṁkulām guhye dadyānmṛdaṁ caikāṁ prakṣālya cāṁbunā tataḥ
Avoiding earth dug up by rats, contaminated, or full of hair, he should apply earth once to the private parts and then wash it off with water.
Verse 43 (skanda.3.57.43)
punarvāmakareṇeti pañcadhā kṣālayedgudam ekaika pādayordadyāttisraḥ pāṇyormṛdastathā
Then with the left hand he should wash the anus five times; he should apply earth once to each foot and thrice to each hand.
Verse 44 (skanda.3.57.44)
itthaṁ śaucaṁ gṛhī kuryādgaṁdhalepakṣayāvadhi kramādvaiguṇyataḥ kuryādbrahmacaryādiṣu triṣu
Thus a householder should purify himself until the smell and residue are gone. In the three states beginning with celibate studenthood, this should be done in progressively doubled measure.
Verse 45 (skanda.3.57.45)
divāvihitaśaucācca rātrāvarddhaṁ samācaret paragrāme tadardhaṁ ca pathi tasyārdhameva ca
Of the purification prescribed for the daytime, half suffices at night; in another village, half of that; and on a journey, half of that again.
Verse 46 (skanda.3.57.46)
tadardhaṁ rogiṇāṁ cāpi susthe nyūnaṁ na kārayet api sarvanadītoyairmṛtkūṭaiścāpyagopamaiḥ
For the sick too, half suffices; but for one in health it should never be reduced — even with the waters of every river and heaps of earth as vast as mountains at hand.
Verse 47 (skanda.3.57.47)
āpātamācarecchaucaṁ bhāvaduṣṭo na śuddhibhāk ārdradhātrīphalonmānā mṛdaḥ śaucе prakīrtitāḥ
One who performs purification merely for show, with a corrupted disposition, does not partake of purity. In this rite, the lump of earth used should be the size of a moist amalaki fruit.
Verse 48 (skanda.3.57.48)
sarvāścāhutayo'pyevaṁ grāsāścāṁdrāyaṇepi ca prāgāsya udagāsyo vā sūpaviṣṭaḥ śucau bhuvi
In the same way the measure applies to all oblations and to the morsels of the chandrayana fast. Facing east or north, seated well on pure ground —
Verse 49 (skanda.3.57.49)
upaspṛśedvihīnābhistuṣāṁgārāsthibhasmabhiḥ atisvacchābhiradbhiśca yāvaddhṛdgābhiratvaraḥ
Without haste, he should sip water that is entirely free of husk, embers, bone, or ash, and utterly clear, until it reaches the heart.
Verse 50 (skanda.3.57.50)
brāhmaṇo brahmatīrthena dṛṣṭipūtābhirācamet kaṇṭhagābhirnṛpaḥ śudhyettālugābhistathorujaḥ
A brahmin should sip through the Brahma-tirtha, with water first purified by sight; a king is purified by water reaching the throat, and a vaishya by water reaching the palate.
Verse 51 (skanda.3.57.51)
strīśūdrāvātha saṁsparśamātreṇāpi viśudhyataḥ śiraḥ śabdaṁ sakaṁṭhaṁ vā jale muktaśikho'pi vā
A woman or a shudra is purified by mere touch of water. One may also sip while making a sound with the head in water, or immersed to the throat, or even with the topknot loosened.
Verse 52 (skanda.3.57.52)
akṣālitapadadvaṁdva ācāṁto'pyaśucirmataḥ triḥ pītvāṁbu viśuddhyarthaṁ tataḥ khāni viśodhayet
One whose two feet have not been washed is considered impure even after sipping. For purification he should drink water thrice, then purify the openings of the body.
Verse 53 (skanda.3.57.53)
aṁguṣṭhamūladeśena hyadharoṣṭhau parimṛjet spṛṣṭvā jalena hṛdayaṁ samastābhiḥ śiraḥ spṛśet
With the base of the thumb he should wipe both lips; having touched the heart with water, he should then touch the head with all the fingers.
Verse 54 (skanda.3.57.54)
aṁgulyagraistathā skandhau sāṁbu sarvatra saṁspṛśet ācāṁtaḥ punarācāmetkṛtvā rathyopasarpaṇam
With the fingertips he should touch both shoulders, and with water every part of the body. Having sipped once, he should sip again if he must walk upon a road.
Verse 55 (skanda.3.57.55)
snātvā bhuktvā payaḥ pītvā prāraṁbhe śubhakarmaṇām suptvā vāsaḥ parīdhāya dṛṣṭvā tathāpyamaṁgalam
After bathing, after eating, after drinking milk, at the start of auspicious rites, after sleeping, after dressing, and likewise after seeing something inauspicious —
Verse 56 (skanda.3.57.56)
pramādādaśuci smṛtvā dvirācāṁtaḥ śucirbhavet daṁtadhāvanaṁ prakurvīta yathokta dharmaśāstrataḥ ācāṁto'pyaśuciryasmādakṛtvā daṁtadhāvanam
— and if he recalls having become impure through carelessness, sipping twice makes him pure again. He should clean his teeth as prescribed in the dharma-shastras, for even after sipping water, one remains impure without having cleaned the teeth.
Verse 57 (skanda.3.57.57)
pratipaddarśaṣaṣṭhīṣu navamyāṁ ravivāsare daṁtānāṁ kāṣṭhasaṁyogo dahedāsaptamaṁ kulam
Using a tooth-twig on the first lunar day, the new moon, the sixth, the ninth, or on Sunday burns up one's family to the seventh generation.
Verse 58 (skanda.3.57.58)
alābhe daṁtakāṣṭhānāṁ niṣiddhe vātha vāsare gaṇḍūṣā dvādaśa grāhyā mukhasya pariśuddhaye
When a tooth-twig cannot be had, or the day is a forbidden one, twelve mouthfuls of water should be taken and rinsed for the complete purification of the mouth.
Verse 59 (skanda.3.57.59)
kaniṣṭhāgraparīmāṇaṁ satvacaṁ nirvraṇārujam dvādaśāṁgulamānaṁ ca sārdraṁ syāddaṁtadhāvanam
The tooth-twig should be as thick as the tip of the little finger, retain its bark, be free of blemish, twelve finger-widths in length, and moist.
Verse 60 (skanda.3.57.60)
ekekāṁgulamānaṁ taccarvayeddaṁtadhāvanam prātaḥ snānaṁ caritvā ca śuddhyai tīrthe viśeṣataḥ
He should chew that tooth-twig a finger-width at a time. Thereafter, for purification, he should bathe at dawn, especially at a sacred ford.
Verse 61 (skanda.3.57.61)
prātaḥ snānādyataḥ śuddhyetkāyo'yaṁ malinaḥ sadā yanmalaṁ navabhiśchidraiḥ sravatyeva divāniśam
By the morning bath this body, which is always impure — its filth flowing ceaselessly, day and night, through nine openings — is purified.
Verse 62 (skanda.3.57.62)
utsāhamedhāsaubhāgyarūpasaṁpatpravarddhakam prājāpatyasamaṁ prāhustanmahāghavināśakṛt
It increases vigour, intellect, good fortune, beauty, and prosperity; it is declared equal to the Prajapatya vow, and it destroys great sin.
Verse 63 (skanda.3.57.63)
prātaḥ snānaṁ haretpāpamalakṣmīṁ glānimeva ca aśucitvaṁ ca duḥsvapnaṁ tuṣṭiṁ puṣṭiṁ prayacchati
The morning bath removes sin, misfortune, and weariness; it removes impurity and bad dreams too, and it bestows contentment and vigour.
Verse 64 (skanda.3.57.64)
nopasarpaṁti vai duṣṭāḥ prātasnāyijanaṁ kvacit dṛṣṭādṛṣṭaphalaṁ yasmātprātaḥsnānaṁ samācaret
Evil beings never approach a person who bathes at dawn. Since the morning bath yields fruit both seen and unseen, one should always observe it.
Verse 65 (skanda.3.57.65)
prasaṁgataḥ snānavidhiṁ pravakṣyāmi nṛpottamāḥ vidhisnānaṁ yataḥ prāhuḥ snānācchataguṇottaram
O best of kings, on this occasion I shall tell the procedure of bathing, for a bath performed according to prescribed rite is said to be a hundred times more efficacious than an ordinary one.
Verse 66 (skanda.3.57.66)
viśuddhāṁ mṛdamādāya barhiṣastilagomayam śucau deśe paristhāpya hyācamya snānamācaret
Taking pure earth, sacred grass, sesame, and cow-dung, he should set them at a pure spot, and then, having sipped water, perform the bath.
Verse 67 (skanda.3.57.67)
upagrahī baddhaśikho jalamadhye samāviśet svaśākhoktavidhānena snānaṁ kuryādyathāvidhi
Holding these articles and with the topknot tied, he should enter the water and bathe duly, according to the procedure prescribed in his own Vedic branch.
Verse 68 (skanda.3.57.68)
snātvetthaṁ vastramāpīḍya gṛhṇīyāddhautavāsasī ācamya ca tataḥ kuryātprātaḥsaṁdhyāṁ kuśānvitaḥ
Having bathed thus, he should wring out his cloth and put on two washed garments. Then, having sipped water and taken darbha grass in hand, he should perform the morning twilight rite.
Verse 69 (skanda.3.57.69)
prāṇāyāmāṁścaranvipro niyamya mānasaṁ dṛḍham ahorātrakṛtaiḥ pāpairmukto bhavati tatkṣaṇāt
A brahmin practising breath-control, firmly restraining his mind, is instantly freed from the sins committed day and night.
Verse 70 (skanda.3.57.70)
daśa dvādaśasaṁkhyā vā prāṇāyāmāḥ kṛtā yadi niyamya mānasaṁ tena tadā taptaṁ mahattapaḥ
If ten or twelve breath-controls are performed with the mind thus restrained, it is as if a great austerity has been undertaken.
Verse 71 (skanda.3.57.71)
savyāhṛtipraṇavakāḥ prāṇāyāmāstu ṣoḍaśa api bhrūṇahanaṁ māsātpunaṁtyaharahaḥ kṛtāḥ
Sixteen breath-controls accompanied by the vyahritis and the pranava, if performed daily, purify even the killer of an embryo within a month.
Verse 72 (skanda.3.57.72)
yathā pārthivadhātūnāṁ dahyate dhamanānmalāḥ tatheṁdriyaiḥ kṛtā doṣā jvālyaṁte prāṇasaṁyamāt
As the impurities of metals are burnt away by smelting, so the faults committed through the senses are consumed by the restraint of breath.
Verse 73 (skanda.3.57.73)
ekākṣaraṁ paraṁ brahma prāṇāyāmaḥ paraṁ tapaḥ gāyatryāstu paraṁ nāsti pāvanaṁ ca nṛpottama
The single syllable Om is the supreme Brahman, and breath-control is the supreme austerity; O best of kings, there is nothing more purifying than the Gayatri.
Verse 74 (skanda.3.57.74)
karmaṇā manasā vācā yadrātrau kurute tvagham uttiṣṭhanpūrvasaṁdhyāyāṁ prāṇāyāmairviśodhayet
Whatever sin is committed at night through action, thought, or speech, one should purify by breath-control on rising for the morning twilight rite.
Verse 75 (skanda.3.57.75)
yadahnā kurute pāpaṁ manovākkāyakarmabhiḥ āsīnaḥ paścimāṁ saṁdhyāṁ prāṇāyāmairvyapohati paścimāṁ tu samāsīno malaṁ haṁti divākṛtam
Whatever sin is committed by day through the actions of mind, speech, and body, one should remove, seated, at the evening twilight rite through breath-control; seated in the evening, one destroys the impurity accumulated through the day.
Verse 76 (skanda.3.57.76)
nopatiṣṭhettu yaḥ pūrvāṁ nopāste yastu paścimām sa śūdravadbahiṣkāryaḥ sarvasmāddvijakarmaṇaḥ
One who neither observes the morning rite nor attends the evening one should, like a shudra, be excluded from all the rites of the twice-born.
Verse 77 (skanda.3.57.77)
apāṁ samīpamāsādya nityakarma samācaret tata ācamanaṁ kuryādyathāvidhyanupūrvaśaḥ
Having gone near water, he should perform the daily rites; then he should sip water in the proper order, according to rule.
Verse 78 (skanda.3.57.78)
āpohiṣṭheti tisṛbhirmārjanaṁ tu tataścaret bhūmau śirasi cākāśa ākāśe bhuvi mastake
Then he should perform the sprinkling with the three verses beginning 'Āpo hi ṣṭhāḥ' — upon the earth, upon the head, into the sky; and again into the sky, upon the earth, upon the head.
Verse 79 (skanda.3.57.79)
mastake ca tathākāśaṁ bhūmau ca navadhā kṣipet bhūmiśabdena caraṇāvākāśaṁ hṛdayaṁ smṛtam śirasyeva śiraḥśabdo mārjanaṁ tairudāhṛtam
Thus he should sprinkle water nine times over the head, into the sky, and upon the earth. By the word 'earth' the feet are meant, by 'sky' the heart, and by 'head' the head itself — the sprinkling is thus explained by these terms.
Verse 80 (skanda.3.57.80)
vāruṇādapi cāgneyādvāyavyādapi ceṁdrataḥ maṁtrasthānādapi paraṁ brāhmaṁ snānamidaṁ param brāhmasnānena yaḥ snātaḥ sa bāhyābhyaṁtaraṁ śuciḥ
Higher than the bath of Varuna, of Agni, of Vayu, or of Indra, and higher even than the bath by mantra, is this supreme Brahma-bath. He who bathes with the Brahma-bath becomes pure both outwardly and inwardly.
Verse 81 (skanda.3.57.81)
sarvatra cārhatāmeti devapūjādikarmaṇi naktaṁdinaṁ nimajjyāpsu kaivartāḥ kimu pāvanāḥ
He becomes fit everywhere for the rites of worshipping the gods and the like. Fishermen, immersed in water night and day, are hardly made pure by it.
Verse 82 (skanda.3.57.82)
śataśo'pi tathā snātā na śuddhā bhāvadūṣitāḥ aṁtaḥkaraṇaśuddhāṁśca tānvibhūtiḥ pavitrayet
Those of corrupted intention are not made pure even by bathing a hundred times; but for those whose inner heart is pure, even sacred ash suffices to purify them.
Verse 83 (skanda.3.57.83)
kiṁ pāvanāḥ prakīrtyaṁte rāsabhā bhasmadhūsarāḥ sa snātaḥ sarvatīrtheṣu malaiḥ sarvairvivarjitaḥ
Are donkeys grey with ash therefore called pure? He alone who is free from every kind of impurity is as one who has bathed in all the sacred fords.
Verse 84 (skanda.3.57.84)
tena kratuśatairiṣṭaṁ ceto yasyeha nirmalam tadeva nirmalaṁ ceto yathā syāttanmune śṛṇu
He whose mind is pure in this world has, as it were, performed a hundred sacrifices. Hear now, O sage, how that mind becomes pure.
Verse 85 (skanda.3.57.85)
viśveśaścetprasannaḥ syāttadā syānnānyathā kvacit tasmāccetо viśuddhyarthaṁ kāśīnāthaṁ samāśrayet
Only when the Lord of the Universe is pleased does the mind become pure, never otherwise. Therefore, for the purification of the mind, one should take refuge in the Lord of Kashi.
Verse 86 (skanda.3.57.86)
idaṁ śarīramutsṛjya paraṁ brahmādhigacchati drupadāṁtaṁ tato japtvā jalamādāya pāṇinā
Having relinquished this body, he attains the supreme Brahman. Then, having recited the verse beginning 'Drupadād iva,' and taking water in the hand —
Verse 87 (skanda.3.57.87)
kuryādṛtaṁ ca maṁtreṇa vidhijñastvaghamarṣaṇam nimajjyāpsu ca yo vidvāñjapettriraghamarṣaṇam
One skilled in the rite should perform the Aghamarshana with the mantra beginning 'Ṛtaṁ ca.' Whoever, learned, immerses himself in water and recites the Aghamarshana mantra thrice —
Verse 88 (skanda.3.57.88)
jale vāpi sthale vāpi yaḥ kuryādaghamarṣaṇam tasyāghaugho vinaśyeta yathā sūryodaye tamaḥ
Whether in water or on dry ground, whoever performs the Aghamarshana — his accumulated mass of sin is destroyed, just as darkness vanishes at sunrise.
Verse 89 (skanda.3.57.89)
gāyatrīṁ śirasā hīnāṁ mahāvyāhṛtipūrvikām praṇavādyāṁ japaṁstiṣṭhankṣipedaṁbhoṁjalitrayam
Reciting the Gayatri, without its head-mantra but preceded by the great vyahritis and beginning with the pranava, he should stand and pour out three handfuls of water.
Verse 90 (skanda.3.57.90)
tena vajrodakenāśu maṁdehā nāma rākṣasāḥ sūryatejaḥ pralopaṁte śailā iva vivasvataḥ
By that thunderbolt-water, the demons named Mandeha are swiftly destroyed by the sun's radiance, as mountains once were by it.
Verse 91 (skanda.3.57.91)
sahāyārthaṁ ca sūryasya yo dvijo nāṁjalitrayam kṣipenmaṁdehanāśāya sopi maṁdehatāṁ vrajet
The twice-born who fails to pour those three handfuls of water in aid of the sun, for the destruction of the Mandehas, himself falls into a Mandeha-like state.
Verse 92 (skanda.3.57.92)
prātastāvajjapaṁstiṣṭhedyāvatsūryasya darśanam upaviṣṭo japetsāyamṛkṣāṇāmāvilokanāt
In the morning he should stand and recite until the sun is seen; in the evening he should sit and recite until the stars appear.
Verse 93 (skanda.3.57.93)
kālalopo na karttavyo dvijena svahitepsunā ardhodayāstasamaye tasmādvajrodakaṁ kṣipet
A twice-born desiring his own good should never let the time lapse. Therefore he should cast the thunderbolt-water precisely at the mid-point of sunrise or sunset.
Verse 94 (skanda.3.57.94)
vidhināpi kṛtā saṁdhyā kālātītā'phalā bhavet ayameva hi dṛṣṭāṁto vaṁdhyāstrīmaithunaṁ yathā
Even a twilight rite performed according to rule becomes fruitless if the proper time has passed. The very example for this is union with a barren woman.
Verse 95 (skanda.3.57.95)
jale vāmakaraṁ kṛtvā yā saṁdhyācaritā dvijaiḥ vṛṣalī sā parijñeyā rakṣogaṇamudāvahā
The twilight rite performed by the twice-born with the left hand placed in the water should be known as base, like a shudra woman's, and it gladdens the hosts of demons.
Verse 96 (skanda.3.57.96)
upasthānaṁ tataḥ kuryācchākhoktavidhinā tataḥ sahasrakṛtvo gāyatryāḥ śatakṛtvothavā punaḥ
Then he should perform the upasthana rite according to the procedure of his own branch, reciting the Gayatri a thousand times, or else a hundred times.
Verse 97 (skanda.3.57.97)
daśakṛtvo'tha devyai ca kuryātsaurīmupasthitim sahasraparamāṁ devīṁ śatamadhyāṁ daśāvarām
Or, reciting it ten times, he should offer the solar salutation to the Goddess. That Goddess is to be worshipped at most a thousand times, in the middle measure a hundred times, and at the least ten times.
Verse 98 (skanda.3.57.98)
The brahmin who recites the Gayatri is not tainted by sins. With water mixed with red sandal, with flowers and darbha grass —
Verse 99 (skanda.3.57.99)
vedoktairāgamoktairvā maṁtrairarghaṁ pradāpayet arcitaḥ savitā yena tena trailokyamarccitam
With mantras enjoined by the Veda or by the Agamas, he should offer the water-oblation. By whomever the sun is worshipped, by him the three worlds are, as it were, worshipped.
Verse 100 (skanda.3.57.100)
arcitaḥ savitā datte sutānpaśuvasūni ca vyādhīnharedadadātyāyuḥ pūrayedvāṁchitānyapi
The worshipped sun grants sons, cattle, and wealth; he removes diseases, bestows longevity, and fulfils all desired wishes as well.
Verse 101 (skanda.3.57.101)
ayaṁ hi rudra ādityo harireṣa divākaraḥ ravirhiraṇyarūpo'sau trayīrūpo'yamaryamā
This sun is indeed Rudra; this maker of the day is Hari himself; this sun is of golden form; this Aryaman embodies the threefold Veda.
Verse 102 (skanda.3.57.102)
tatastu tarpaṇaṁ kuryātsvaśākhoktavidhānataḥ brahmādīnakhilāndevānmarīcyādīṁstathā munīn
Then he should perform the water-offering according to the procedure of his own branch — for Brahma and all the gods, and likewise for the sages beginning with Marichi.
Verse 103 (skanda.3.57.103)
caṁdanāgurukarppūragaṁdhavatkusamairapi tarpayecchucibhistoyaistṛpyaṁtviti samuccaret
He should offer the water-libation with pure water accompanied by sandal, aloewood, camphor, and fragrant flowers, uttering 'may they be satisfied.'
Verse 104 (skanda.3.57.104)
sanakādīnmanuṣyāṁśca nivītī tarpayedyavaiḥ aṁguṣṭhadvayamadhye tu kṛtvā darbhānṛjūndvijaḥ
Wearing the sacred thread as a garland, he should offer libation of barley to Sanaka and the other sages, and to human ancestors. Placing straight darbha blades between the two thumbs —
Verse 105 (skanda.3.57.105)
kavyavāḍanalādīṁśca pitṝndivyānpratarppayet prācīnāvītiko darbhairdviguṇaistilamiśritaiḥ
— the twice-born should offer libation to the divine ancestors headed by the fire Kavyavahana. With the sacred thread over the right shoulder, using double darbha blades mixed with sesame —
Verse 106 (skanda.3.57.106)
ravau śukle trayodaśyāṁ saptamyāṁ niśi saṁdhyayoḥ śreyorthī brāhmaṇo jātu na kuryāttilatarppaṇam
On Sunday, on the thirteenth of the bright fortnight, on the seventh, at night, or during the two twilights, a brahmin desiring his own welfare should never perform the sesame-libation.
Verse 107 (skanda.3.57.107)
yadi kuryāttataḥ kuryācchuklaireva tilaiḥ kṛtī caturdaśa yamānpaścāttarpayennāma uccaran
If it must be done, a skilled man should use only white sesame. Afterward he should offer libation to the fourteen Yamas, uttering their names.
Verse 108 (skanda.3.57.108)
tataḥ svagotramuccārya tarpayetsvānpitṝnmudā savyajānunipātena pitṛtīrthena vāgyataḥ
Then, having uttered his own gotra, he should joyfully offer libation to his own ancestors, kneeling on the left knee, using the Pitri-tirtha, remaining silent.
Verse 109 (skanda.3.57.109)
ekaikamaṁjaliṁ devā dvaudvau tu sanakādikāḥ pitarastrīnpravāṁchaṁti striya ekaikamaṁjalim
The gods desire one handful each, Sanaka and the others two each, the ancestors long for three each, and women one handful each.
Verse 110 (skanda.3.57.110)
aṁgulyagreṇa vai daivamārṣamaṁgulimūlagam brāhmamaṁguṣṭhamūle tu pāṇimadhye prajāpateḥ
At the tips of the fingers lies the tirtha of the gods, at the base of the fingers that of the sages, at the base of the thumb the Brahma-tirtha, and in the middle of the palm that of Prajapati.
Verse 111 (skanda.3.57.111)
madhyeṁguṣṭhapradeśinyoḥ pitryaṁ tīrthaṁ pracakṣate ābrahmastaṁbaparyaṁtaṁ devarṣipitṛmānavāḥ
Between the thumb and the forefinger is declared to be the Pitri-tirtha. From Brahma down to a blade of grass — gods, sages, ancestors, and men —
Verse 112 (skanda.3.57.112)
tṛpyaṁtu sarve pitaro mātṛmātāmahādayaḥ anye ca maṁtrāḥ proktā ye vedoktāḥ purāṇasaṁbhavāḥ
— may all be satisfied. May all the ancestors, the mother's forebears and the maternal grandfather among them, be satisfied. And whatever other mantras have been declared, whether enjoined by the Veda or arising from the Puranas —
Verse 113 (skanda.3.57.113)
sāṁgaṁ ca tarppaṇaṁ kuryātpitṝṇāṁ ca sukhapradam agnikāryaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā vedābhyāsaṁ tataścaret
— with these he should perform the water-offering completely, bringing comfort to the ancestors. Then, having performed the fire-rite, he should proceed to the study of the Veda.
Verse 114 (skanda.3.57.114)
śrutyabhyāsaḥ paṁcadhā syātsvīkāro'rthavicāraṇam abhyāsaśca tapaścāpi śiṣyebhyaḥ pratipādanam
The study of the Veda is fivefold: acceptance of the text, reflection on its meaning, repeated practice, austerity, and instruction of pupils.
Verse 115 (skanda.3.57.115)
labdhasya pratipālārthamalabdhasya ca labdhaye prātaḥkṛtyamidaṁ proktaṁ dvijātīnāṁ nṛpottama
This is done both to preserve what has already been learned and to gain what has not yet been attained. O best of kings, this has been declared as the morning duty of the twice-born.
Verse 116 (skanda.3.57.116)
athavā prātarutthāya kṛtvāvaśyakameva ca śaucācamanamādāya bhakṣayeddantadhāvanam
Or else, rising at dawn, having attended to nature's call, and after purification and sipping water, he should chew the tooth-twig.
Verse 117 (skanda.3.57.117)
viśodhya sarvagātrāṇi prātaḥsaṁdhyāṁ samācaret vedārthānadhigacchedvai śāstrāṇi vividhānyapi
Having purified all his limbs, he should perform the morning twilight rite, and should master the meanings of the Veda as well as the various shastras.
Verse 118 (skanda.3.57.118)
adhyāpayecchucīñchiṣyānhitānmedhāsamanvitān upeyādīśvaraṁ cāpi yogakṣemādisiddhaye
He should teach pupils who are pure, well-disposed, and endowed with intelligence, and he should also approach the Lord in worship for the attainment of security and prosperity.
Verse 119 (skanda.3.57.119)
tato madhyāhnasiddhyarthaṁ pūrvoktaṁ snānamācaret snātvā mādhyāhnikīṁ saṁdhyāmupāsīta vicakṣaṇaḥ
Then, for the accomplishment of the midday rites, he should perform the bath already described. Having bathed, the discerning man should attend to the midday twilight rite.
Verse 120 (skanda.3.57.120)
devatāṁ paripūjyātha naimittikaṁ vidhiṁ caret pavanāgniṁ samujjvālya vaiśvadevaṁ samācaret
Having duly worshipped the deity, he should perform the occasional rites. Kindling the fire with the aid of the wind, he should perform the Vaishvadeva offering.
Verse 121 (skanda.3.57.121)
niṣpāvānkodravānmāṣānkalāpāṁścaṇakāṁstyajet tailapakvamapakvānnaṁ sarvaṁ lavaṇayuktyajet
In the Vaishvadeva offering, he should avoid beans, kodo millet, black gram, field peas, and chickpeas; he should likewise avoid food fried in oil, uncooked food, and anything mixed with salt.
Verse 122 (skanda.3.57.122)
āḍhakyannaṁ masūrānnaṁ vartuladhānyasaṁbhavam bhuktaśeṣaṁ paryuṣitaṁ vaiśvadeve vivarjayet
Food made from pigeon-pea, from lentils, from round grains, the leftover part of a meal, and stale food — all of these should be excluded from the Vaishvadeva offering.
Verse 123 (skanda.3.57.123)
darbhapāṇiḥ samācamya prāṇāyāmaṁ vidhāya ca pṛṣodivīti maṁtreṇa paryyukṣaṇamathācaret
With darbha grass in hand, he should sip water and perform breath-control, and then, with the mantra beginning 'pṛṣadājyam,' sprinkle the vessels.
Verse 124 (skanda.3.57.124)
pradakṣiṇaṁ ca paryukṣya dviḥ paristīrya vai kuśān rāpordha(?) devamantreṇa kuryādvahniṁ svasaṁmukhe
Having sprinkled in the clockwise direction and spread the darbha grass twice, he should, with the deity-mantra rāordha(?), place the fire before himself.
Verse 125 (skanda.3.57.125)
vaiśvānaraṁ samabhyarcya gaṁdhapuṣpākṣataistathā svaśākhoktaprakāreṇa homaṁ kuryādvicakṣaṇaḥ
Having worshipped Vaishvanara with fragrance, flowers, and unbroken rice, the discerning man should perform the fire-oblation according to the procedure of his own branch.
Verse 126 (skanda.3.57.126)
adhvagaḥ kṣīṇavṛttiśca vidyārthī gurupoṣakaḥ yatiśca brahmacārī ca ṣaḍete dharmabhikṣakāḥ
The traveller, one whose livelihood has failed, the student, one who supports his teacher, the renunciant, and the celibate student — these six are entitled to beg by right of dharma.
Verse 127 (skanda.3.57.127)
atithiḥ pāṁthiko jñeyo'nūcānaḥ śrutipāragaḥ mānyāvetau gṛhasthānāṁ brahmalokamabhīpsatām
An 'atithi' should be understood as a wayfarer, and one versed in the Veda to its farthest limit is an 'anuchana' — for householders desiring the world of Brahma, both of these deserve honour.
Verse 128 (skanda.3.57.128)
api śvapāke śuni vā naivānnaṁ niṣphalaṁ bhavet atrārthini samāyāte pātrāpātraṁ na ciṁtayet
Even food given to an outcaste or to a dog never goes without fruit. When a supplicant has come, one should not stop to consider whether he is a worthy or unworthy recipient.
Verse 129 (skanda.3.57.129)
śunāṁ ca patitānāṁ ca śvapacāṁ pāparogiṇām kākānāṁ ca kṛmīṇāṁ ca bahirannaṁ kiredbhuvi
For dogs, for outcastes, for those born to outcaste work, for those afflicted with sinful diseases, for crows, and for worms, he should scatter food outside upon the ground.
Verse 130 (skanda.3.57.130)
aiṁdravāruṇavāyavyāḥ saumyā vai nairṛtāśca ye pratigṛhṇaṁtvimaṁ piṁḍaṁ kākā bhūmau mayārpitam
'May the crow-hosts of Indra, Varuna, Vayu, Soma, and Nirriti accept this offering of food which I have set down upon the earth.'
Verse 131 (skanda.3.57.131)
itthaṁ bhūtabaliṁ kṛtvā kālaṁ godohamātrakam pratīkṣyātithimāyātaṁ viśadbhojyagṛhaṁ tataḥ
Having thus performed the offering to the beings, he should wait for the time it takes to milk a cow, watching for an arriving guest, and only then enter the dining hall.
Verse 132 (skanda.3.57.132)
adattvā vāyasabaliṁ nityaśrāddhaṁ samācaret nityaśrāddhe svasāmarthyāttrīndvāvekamathāpi vā
Without having offered the crow-oblation, one should not perform the daily shraddha. In the daily shraddha, according to his means, he should feed three, two, or even just one brahmin.
Verse 133 (skanda.3.57.133)
bhojayetpitṛyajñārthaṁ dadyāduddhatya vāri ca nityaśrāddhaṁ daivahīnaṁ niyamādivivarjitam
He should feed them for the sake of the ancestral rite, and offer water lifted up in the hand. The daily shraddha is free of the portion for the gods, and is also free from other formal restrictions.
Verse 134 (skanda.3.57.134)
dakṣiṇārahitaṁ tvetaddātṛbhoktṛsutṛptikṛt pitṛyajñaṁ vidhāyetthaṁ svasthabuddhiranāturaḥ
This rite is without a priestly fee, yet it fully satisfies both giver and receiver. Having thus performed the ancestral sacrifice, with a composed mind and free of affliction —
Verse 135 (skanda.3.57.135)
aduṣṭāsanamadhyāsya bhuṁjīta śiśubhiḥ saha sugaṁdhiḥ sumanāḥ sragvī śucivāsodvayānvitaḥ
— he should sit on a flawless seat and eat together with the children of the house — fragrant, cheerful of mind, garlanded, and clad in two clean garments.
Verse 136 (skanda.3.57.136)
prāgāsya udagāsyo vā bhuṁjīta pitṛsevitam vidhāyānnamanagnaṁ tadupariṣṭādadhastathā
Facing east or north, he should eat food that the ancestors have partaken of, taking care not to overcook it, arranging it duly above and below.
Verse 137 (skanda.3.57.137)
āpośānavidhānena kṛtvāśnīyātsudhīrdvijaḥ bhūmau balitrayaṁ kuryādapo dadyāttadopari
The wise twice-born should eat only after performing the rite of aposhana. He should offer the food-bali three times upon the ground, and pour water over it as well.
Verse 138 (skanda.3.57.138)
sakṛccāpa upaspṛśya prāṇādyāhutipaṁcakam dadyājaṭharakuṁḍāgnau darbhapāṇiḥ prasannadhīḥ
Having touched water once, with darbha grass in hand and a serene mind, he should offer the fivefold oblation beginning with 'prana' into the fire-pit that is his stomach.
Verse 139 (skanda.3.57.139)
darbhapāṇistu yo bhuṁkte tasya doṣo na vidyate keśakīṭādisaṁbhūtastadaśnīyātsadarbhakaḥ
One who eats with darbha grass in hand incurs no fault. Even if the food happens to be contaminated by hair or an insect, one holding darbha may still eat it without harm.
Verse 140 (skanda.3.57.140)
tato maunena bhuñjīta na kuryāddaṁtagharṣaṇam prakṣālitavyahastasya dakṣiṇāṁguṣṭhamūlataḥ
He should then eat in silence, without clicking the teeth. Afterward the hand should be washed, beginning from the base of the right thumb.
Verse 141 (skanda.3.57.141)
raurave'puṇyanilaye adholokanivāsinām ucchiṣṭodakamicchūnāmakṣayyamupatiṣṭhatām
For those dwelling in the ill-fated abode called Raurava, and for the beings who live in the nether worlds, longing for the leftover water and standing in wait — it becomes for them an inexhaustible offering.
Verse 142 (skanda.3.57.142)
punarācamya medhāvī śucirbhūtvā prayatnataḥ mukhaśuddhiṁ tataḥ kṛtvā purāṇaśravaṇādibhiḥ
The wise man should then sip water again, become pure through diligence, cleanse his mouth, and thereafter engage in listening to the Puranas and the like.
Verse 143 (skanda.3.57.143)
ativāhya divāśeṣaṁ tataḥ saṁdhyāṁ samācaret gṛheṣu prākṛtā saṁdhyā goṣṭhe daśaguṇā smṛtā
Having thus passed the rest of the day, he should perform the evening rite. The twilight rite performed at home yields ordinary fruit, but performed in a cow-pen it is reckoned tenfold.
Verse 144 (skanda.3.57.144)
nadyāmayutasaṁkhyā syādanaṁtā śivasannidhau anṛtaṁ madyagaṁdhaṁ ca divāmaithunameva ca punāti vṛṣalasthānaṁ saṁdhyā bahirupāsitā
Performed by a river it yields ten-thousandfold, and performed in Shiva's presence it yields fruit without limit. The twilight rite, performed outdoors, purifies even the degradation born of falsehood, the smell of liquor, or daytime intercourse.
Verse 145 (skanda.3.57.145)
uddeśataḥ samākhyāta eṣa nityatano vidhiḥ itthaṁ samācaranvipro nāvasīdati karhicit
Thus, in brief, this daily rite has been described. The brahmin who conducts himself in this manner never comes to grief.
