The Glory of Rameshvara

Chapter 99All chaptersChapter 101

Verse 1 (skanda.5.100.1)

śrīhara uvāca| ekonatriṁśataṁ viddhi devaṁ rāmeśvaraṁ priye| yasya darśanamātreṇa mucyate brahmahatyayā

Shri Hara said: Know, O beloved, the twenty-ninth deity as Rameshvara — by whose mere sight one is freed from the sin of slaying a Brahmin.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.100.2)

purā tretāyuge devi rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ| śūraḥ sarvaguṇopetaḥ pitṛbhakto babhūva ha

Long ago, in the Treta Yuga, O Devi, Rama, foremost among wielders of weapons, was valiant, endowed with every virtue, and devoted to his father.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.100.3)

reṇukāgarbhasaṁbhūtaḥ svayaṁ rāmo babhūva ha| viṣṇurevāvatīrṇo'sau bhṛgoḥ śāpātsudustarāt

Born from the womb of Renuka, Rama was himself an incarnation of Vishnu, brought about by Bhrigu's near-insurmountable curse.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.100.4)

sa kadācinniyukto'sau muninā jamadagninā| śiraśchindhītyuvācedaṁ mātuste vipulaṁ suta

Once, the sage Jamadagni commanded him, saying: 'O mighty son, sever your mother's head.'

Verse 5 (skanda.5.100.5)

sa piturvacanaṁ śrutvā bhrātṝṇāṁ mātureva ca| śirāṁsi cicchide rāmo jamadagnirvaraṁ dadau

Hearing his father's command, Rama severed the heads of his brothers and of his mother as well; then Jamadagni granted him a boon.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.100.6)

sarveṣāṁ pṛthivīśānāṁ tvamajeyo bhaviṣyasi| sarvakṣayakaro bhāvī na cirādeva bhārgava

'You shall be unconquerable by all lords of the earth, and, O Bhargava, ere long you shall become the destroyer of all Kshatriyas.'

Verse 7 (skanda.5.100.7)

gṛhāṇa paraśuṁ putra vahnijvālodbhavaṁ dṛḍham| anena śitaśastreṇa tataḥ khyāto bhavi ṣyati

'Take, O son, this mighty axe born of fire's flame; by this sharp weapon you shall become renowned.'

Verse 8 (skanda.5.100.8)

atha kenāpi kālena kārttavīryārjuno nṛpaḥ| haihayānāṁ kule jātaḥ sahasrabāhuviśrutaḥ

Then, in time, there arose a king named Kartavirya Arjuna, born in the Haihaya lineage, renowned as the thousand-armed.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.100.9)

jaghāna jamadagniṁ tu kāmadhenukṛte kudhīḥ| pitaraṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā rāmaḥ kuddho'bravīdidam

That evil-minded king slew Jamadagni for the sake of the wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu. Seeing his father slain, Rama, enraged, said:

Verse 10 (skanda.5.100.10)

atha paśyaṁtu me vīryaṁ trayo lokāḥ sanātanam| sa ca paśyatu durbuddhirbrahmahā kṛtavīryajaḥ

'Now let the three eternal worlds behold my valor, and let that evil-minded son of Kritavirya behold it too.'

Verse 11 (skanda.5.100.11)

matpitā nihato yena satkarmanirataḥ sadā| tasya bāhusahasraṁ tu chetsyāmīha na saṁśayaḥ

'He who slew my father, ever devoted to righteous deeds — his thousand arms I shall surely sever here, without doubt.'

Verse 12 (skanda.5.100.12)

ityuktvā krodharaktākṣaḥ kārttavī ryārjunaṁ bhuvi| dharṣayitvā yathākāmaṁ krośamānaṁ punaḥpunaḥ

Having said this, his eyes red with rage, having overpowered Kartavirya Arjuna upon the earth at will, as he cried out again and again,

Verse 13 (skanda.5.100.13)

kṛtsnaṁ bāhusahasraṁ ca ciccheda bhṛgunaṁdanaḥ| paraśvadhena tīkṣṇena jñātibhiḥ sahitaṁ tadā

the son of Bhrigu severed his entire thousand arms, together with his kinsmen, with his sharp axe.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.100.14)

rathasthaṁ pātayāmāsa jaghāna nṛpatiṁ priye| triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī tena niḥkṣatriyā kṛtā

O beloved, he felled the king from his chariot and slew him; and by him the earth was made free of Kshatriyas twenty-one times.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.100.15)

kṛtvā niḥkṣatriyāṁ caiva bhārgavaḥ sa mahābalaḥ| sarvapāpavināśāya vājimedhena ceṣṭavān

Having thus rid the earth of Kshatriyas, that mighty son of Bhrigu, to destroy all sin, performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.100.16)

tasminyajñe mahādāne dakṣiṇāṁ bhṛgunaṁdanaḥ| mārīcāya dadau prītaḥ kaśyapāya vasundharām

In that sacrifice of great gifts, the son of Bhrigu, being pleased, gave the earth as sacrificial fee to Marichi's son Kashyapa.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.100.17)

vāruṇāṁsturagāñchubhrānrathaṁ ca rathināṁ varaḥ| hiraṇyamakṣayaṁ dhenūrgajeṁdrāśca mahāmatiḥ

That wise and best of charioteers gave Varuna's bright horses, a chariot, inexhaustible gold, cows, and lordly elephants.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.100.18)

tadā tasminmahāyajñe vājimedhe mahāyaśāḥ| tathāpi na gatā hatyā hyanekaprāṇisaṁbhavā

Yet, O one of great renown, even in that great Ashvamedha sacrifice, the sin arising from the killing of countless beings did not depart.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.100.19)

evaṁ kila purāṇeṣu sarvāgamabhidādiṣu| viśvastaghātināṁ caiva niṣkṛtiḥ śrūyate yathā

Thus indeed, it is heard in the Puranas and in all the scriptures, how atonement is prescribed even for the betrayers of trust.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.100.20)

aśvamedhena yajñena brahmahatyā vinaśyati| athavā dvādaśābdena yadyekā''syā kṛtā bhuvi

By the Ashvamedha sacrifice, Brahmahatya is destroyed, or, if only a single such killing has been committed on earth, by twelve years of penance.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.100.21)

mayā punarnṛśaṁsena bahavaḥ prāṇino hatāḥ| viśvastāśca pramattāśca garbhasthāśca punaḥpunaḥ

'But I, cruel that I am, have slain many living beings again and again — the trusting, the heedless, and even those still in the womb.'

Verse 22 (skanda.5.100.22)

striyo vṛddhāśca bālāśca mātā caiva viśeṣataḥ| iti duḥkhānvito rāmo viṣādaṁ paramaṁ gataḥ

'Women, the aged, children, and especially my own mother.' Thus overwhelmed with sorrow, Rama fell into the deepest despair.

Verse 23 (skanda.5.100.23)

ciṁtayitvā muhūrtaṁ tu gato raivatakaṁ girim| tathā tapo 'tapaddhoraṁ bahūnvarṣagaṇānpriye

After pondering for a moment, he went to Mount Raivataka, and there, O beloved, practiced fierce austerities for many years.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.100.24)

tathāpi na gatā hatyā hyanekaprāṇisaṁbhavā| atha rāmo jagāmātha mahendre malaye tathā

Yet still the sin born of killing many beings did not depart; then Rama went on to Mount Mahendra and to the Malaya mountain.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.100.25)

sahye himālaye ramye puṇye badarikāśrame| caritvā parvatānsarvānsnānārthaṁ narmadāṁ yayau

To the Sahya mountains, the lovely Himalaya, and the sacred hermitage of Badarika — having wandered over all these mountains, he went to bathe in the Narmada.

Verse 26 (skanda.5.100.26)

yamunāṁ caṁdrabhāgāṁ ca gaṁgāṁ tripathagāminīm| irāvatīṁ vitastāṁ ca parāṁ carmaṇvatīṁ śubhām

He bathed also in the Yamuna, the Chandrabhaga, the Ganga who flows in three paths, the Iravati, the Vitasta, and the distant, sacred Charmanvati.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.100.27)

viśālāṁ kapilāṁ durgāṁ gaṁbhīrāṁ gomatīṁ śivām| godāvarīṁ daśārṇāṁ ca puṇyāṁ bhīmarathīṁ tathā

And in the Vishala, the Kapila, the Durga, the deep Gomati, the Godavari, the Dashārna, and the sacred Bhimarathi.

Verse 28 (skanda.5.100.28)

gayāṁ caiva kurukṣetraṁ naimiṣaṁ puṣkaraṁ tathā| aṭṭahāsaṁ prabhāsaṁ ca kedāramamareśvaram

He also visited Gaya, Kurukshetra, Naimisha, Pushkara, Attahasa, Prabhasa, Kedara, and Amareshvara.

Verse 29 (skanda.5.100.29)

kṛtayātro'pi duḥkhārttaściṁtayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ| na nūnaṁ tīrthamāhātmyaṁ dṛśyate bhuvi sāṁpratam

Even after completing the pilgrimage, the sorrow-stricken son of Bhrigu reflected: 'Surely the glory of the sacred fords no longer appears on this earth.'

Verse 30 (skanda.5.100.30)

na gatā brahmahatyā me kṛto dharmo nirarthakaḥ| mithyā tatkathyate śāstre tīrthadānādibhiḥ śubhaiḥ| yadi syātsatyametacca naṣṭaṁ jātaṁ kathaṁ mama

'My Brahmahatya has not departed; the righteous deeds I performed have proved fruitless. What the scriptures declare of the merit of pilgrimage, gifts, and the like seems false — for if it were true, how would my sin not have perished?'

Verse 31 (skanda.5.100.31)

etasminneva kāle tu nārado munipuṁgavaḥ| ājagāma tamuddeśaṁ yatra rāmo vyavasthitaḥ

At that very time, Narada, foremost of sages, came to that place where Rama dwelt.

Verse 32 (skanda.5.100.32)

viṣaṇṇavadano dīnaściṁtayānaḥ punaḥpunaḥ| dṛṣṭvā tathāvidho rāmaḥ pratyuvācātha nāradam

Seeing him thus, with a dejected countenance, wretched, and brooding again and again, Rama, being in that state, replied to Narada.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.100.33)

bhobho nārada devarṣe śṛṇu me paramaṁ vacaḥ| jananī nihatā pūrvaṁ piturvākyāhijottama

'O divine sage Narada, hear my utmost words. Long ago, at my father's command, I slew my own mother, O best of the twice-born.'

Verse 34 (skanda.5.100.34)

pituḥ parābhavādbhūmau bhṛmipālā mayā hatāḥ| garbhā vidāritāḥ strīṇāṁ bālā vṛddhāśca yoṣitaḥ

'Because of my father's defeat, I slew kings upon the earth; I tore open the wombs of women, and killed children, the aged, and women too.'

Verse 35 (skanda.5.100.35)

niraṁtarā hatā lokā viśokenādayālunā| paścāddhṛṇā samutpannā paralokaṁ mamekṣataḥ

'Mercilessly and without cease did I slay creatures, without sorrow; but afterward, looking toward the world beyond, remorse arose in me.'

Verse 36 (skanda.5.100.36)

yajñaḥ kṛto'śvamedhaśca dattaṁ dānamanekadhā| snātohaṁ sarvatīrtheṣu sarvaprasravaṇeṣu ca

'I performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice, gave gifts of many kinds, and bathed in all the sacred fords and all the springs.'

Verse 37 (skanda.5.100.37)

parvateṣu tapastaptaṁ hutaṁ japtaṁ niraṁtaram| brahmahatyāvināśārthaṁṁ kiṁ kiṁ nātra mayā kṛtam

'On mountains I performed austerities, made oblations, and recited mantras without cease — what have I not done to destroy this Brahmahatya?'

Verse 38 (skanda.5.100.38)

paraṁ naiva gatā hatyā tasmātsarvaṁ nirarthakam

'Yet still that sin of killing has not departed; so all of this has been in vain.'

Verse 39 (skanda.5.100.39)

iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā nārado bhagavānṛṣiḥ| pratyuvāca hitaṁ satyaṁ ciraṁ dhyātvā vacastadā| bhobho rāma kimātmānaṁ na smarasyadhunā harim

Having heard his words, the blessed sage Narada, after long reflection, spoke this beneficial and true word: 'O Rama, why do you not now remember that you yourself are Hari?'

Verse 40 (skanda.5.100.40)

tvayaiva kathitaṁ pūrvaṁ brahmahatyāvināśanam| mahākālavane kṣetre kṣetrāṇāmuttamaṁ param| tasminkṣetre mahāliṁgaṁ brahmahatyāvināśanam

'You yourself once declared the means of destroying Brahmahatya — the field of Mahakalavana, the supreme and best of all sacred fields; in that field is a great linga which destroys the sin of killing a Brahmin.'

Verse 41 (skanda.5.100.41)

jaṭeśvaro mahābhāga vidyate sarvasiddhidam| kṛtāvatāra rāma tvaṁ tatra gacchāvilaṁbitama| nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā smṛtvā kṣetramanuttamam

'O most fortunate one, there dwells Jateshvara, who grants every attainment. O Rama, you who have taken incarnation, go there without delay.' Having heard Narada's words, and recalling that unsurpassed sacred field,

Verse 42 (skanda.5.100.42)

jagāma tvaritaṁ devi mahākālavane tataḥ| liṁgamārādhayāmāsa tato hatyā gatā kṣayam| liṁgamadhyādahaṁ devi prasanno nirgatastadā

O Devi, he swiftly went to Mahakalavana, and worshipped the linga there; then his sin of killing was destroyed. O Devi, from the midst of that very linga, I, being pleased, appeared.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.100.43)

I said to the son of Jamadagni: 'I shall grant your cherished desire.' Then Rama, his head bowed in devotion, said:

Verse 44 (skanda.5.100.44)

tvatpādapaṁkaje bhūyādbhaktirme vipulā sadā| varametaṁ prayacchādya yadi tuṣṭo maheśvara

'May my devotion to your lotus feet ever remain abundant; O Maheshvara, if you are pleased, grant me this very boon today.'

Verse 45 (skanda.5.100.45)

ityukto'haṁ tadā tena yathā tuṣṭena pārvati| tasmai dattā mayābhīṣṭā varā kīrttikarā sthitiḥ

O Parvati, being pleased by his words, I granted him that desired and glory-bestowing boon.

Verse 46 (skanda.5.100.46)

adyaprabhṛti te nāmnā devaḥ khyāto bhaviṣyati| tadā rāmeśvara iti triṣu lokeṣu gīyate

'From today, this deity shall be renowned by your very name' — and since then, he is sung of as 'Rameshvara' throughout the three worlds.

Verse 47 (skanda.5.100.47)

bhaktyā ye pūjayiṣyaṁti devaṁ rāmeśvaraṁ param| ājanmaprabhavaṁ pāpaṁ teṣāṁ na3yati tatkṣaṇāt

Those who worship this supreme deity Rameshvara with devotion — their sin accumulated from birth after birth is destroyed in that very instant.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.100.48)

sa eva puṇyavānpūjya iha loke paratra ca| yaḥ paśyati naro bhaktyā devaṁ rāmeśvaraṁ śivam

That man alone is meritorious and worthy of worship in this world and the next, who beholds with devotion the god Rameshvara Shiva.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.100.49)

ye'numodaṁti devasya darśanaṁ yajanaṁ tathā| te'pi pāpavinirmuktāḥ prayāṁti mama maṁdiram

Those who rejoice in the worship and sight of the deity — they too, freed from sin, attain to my abode.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.100.50)

yaccāpi pātakaṁ ghoraṁ brahmahatyāsahasrakam| tatpāpaṁ vilayaṁ yāti rāmeśvarasamarcanāt

Even a sin as dreadful as a thousand Brahmahatyas is dissolved through the worship of Rameshvara.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.100.51)

duṣprāpyaṁ yatphalaṁ viprairvājapeyādibhirmakhaiḥ| prāpyate tatsukhenaiva śrīrāmeśvaradarśanāt

That fruit, hard for even Brahmins to attain through sacrifices like the Vajapeya, is easily obtained merely by the sight of Shri Rameshvara.

Verse 52 (skanda.5.100.52)

ye hatābhimukhāḥ śūrā goviprārthe raṇājire| gatirabhyadhikā tebhyo dṛṣṭvā rāmeśvaraṁ śivam

Even higher than the destiny of those brave warriors who face death on the battlefield for the sake of cows and Brahmins is the state attained by beholding Rameshvara Shiva.

Verse 53 (skanda.5.100.53)

jitāstena sadā lokā rāmeṇeva jagattrayam| dṛṣṭaṁ yena sadā bhaktyā liṁgaṁ rāmeśvaraṁ śivam

He who has ever beheld with devotion the linga of Rameshvara Shiva has, as it were, conquered all the worlds forever — just as Rama conquered the three worlds.

Verse 54 (skanda.5.100.54)

eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| rāmeśvarasya devasya śṛṇu tvaṁ cyavaneśvaram

This sin-destroying glory of the god Rameshvara, O Devi, has thus been told to you; now hear of Chyavaneshvara.
