Avanti Khanda · Chapter 101
The Glory of Chyavaneshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.5.101.1)
śrīviśvanātha uvāca| triṁśattamaṁ vijānīhi tvaṁ devi cyavaneśvaram| yasya darśanamātreṇa svargabhraṁśo na jāyate
Shri Vishvanatha said: Know, O Devi, the thirtieth deity as Chyavaneshvara — by whose mere sight one never falls from heaven.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.101.2)
bhṛgormaharṣeḥ putraśca cyavano nāma pārvati| sthāṇubhūtastapastepe nirāhāro mahāmuniḥ
The great sage Chyavana, O Parvati, son of the great sage Bhrigu, stood motionless as a post and performed austerities without food.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.101.3)
vitastāyāstaṭe ramye bahuvarṣagaṇānkila| savalmīko'bhavadvipro latābhirabhisaṁvṛtaḥ
On the lovely bank of the Vitasta, for many years, that Brahmin became covered by an anthill and enveloped by creepers.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.101.4)
kālena mahatā devi samākīrṇaḥ pipīlakaiḥ| tathā sa saṁvṛto dhīmānmṛtpiṁḍa iva sarvaśaḥ
In the course of a long time, O Devi, he became covered with ants; thus that wise one was entirely enveloped, like a lump of clay.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.101.5)
ājagāma tamuddeśaṁ vihartuṁ vana uttame| śaryātirnāma dharmātmā sakuṭuṁbo mudānvitaḥ
To that place, to roam in the excellent forest, there came, joyful and with his family, the righteous king named Sharyati.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.101.6)
tasya strīṇāṁ sahasrāṇi catvāryāsanparigrahaḥ| ekaiva tu sutā subhrūḥ sukanyānāma nāmataḥ
He had four thousand wives as his household; but only a single daughter, of lovely brows, named Sukanya.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.101.7)
sā sakhībhiḥ parivṛtā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā| sā bhramyamāṇā valmīke dṛṣṭvā bhārgavacakṣuṣī
She, surrounded by her companions and adorned with every ornament, wandering about, saw within the anthill the eyes of the son of Bhrigu.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.101.8)
sā kautukātkaṇṭakena buddhimohavatī tadā| kiṁ nu khalvidamityuktvā nirbibhedāsya locane
Out of curiosity, her mind confused, saying 'What indeed is this?', she then pierced his eyes with a thorn.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.101.9)
abhavatsa tayā viddho netrayoḥ paramārtimān| tataḥ śaryātisainyasya śakṛnmūtraṁ samāruṇat
Pierced by her in both eyes, he became greatly afflicted with pain; then he obstructed the excretion of Sharyati's army.
Verse 10 (skanda.5.101.10)
tato ruddhe śakṛnmūtre paryatapyata pārthivaḥ| pratyuvāca tataḥ kruddho rājā gadgadayā girā
When excretion was thus obstructed, the king was distressed; then, enraged, the king spoke in a choked voice.
Verse 11 (skanda.5.101.11)
kenāpakṛtamadyeha bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ| taponityasya vṛddhasya roṣaṇasya viśeṣataḥ
'Who today has done wrong here to the great-souled son of Bhrigu — ever devoted to austerity, aged, and especially prone to anger?'
Verse 12 (skanda.5.101.12)
jñātaṁ vā yadi vājñātaṁ tadidaṁ brūta mā ciram| tamūcuḥ sainikāḥ sarve na vidmo'pakṛtaṁ vayam
'Whether known or unknown, tell me this without delay.' All the soldiers said to him: 'We know of no wrong we have done.'
Verse 13 (skanda.5.101.13)
tataḥ sa pṛthivīpālaḥ sāmnā cogreṇa ca svayam| paryapṛcchatsvavarga ca bhūyobhūyaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ
Then that lord of the earth, greatly distressed, himself questioned his own retinue again and again, gently as well as sternly.
Verse 14 (skanda.5.101.14)
pitaraṁ duḥkhitaṁ dṛṣṭvā sukanyā tamathābravīt| mayā kiṁcicca valmīke dṛṣṭaṁ sattvamaticchavi
Seeing her father distressed, Sukanya then said to him: 'I saw something of great brilliance within the anthill.'
Verse 15 (skanda.5.101.15)
khadyotavadabhijñātaṁ tanmayā viddhamaṁtikam| etacchrutvā tu śaryātirvalmīkaṁ kṣipramabhyagāt
'Recognizing it as like a firefly, I pierced it nearby.' Hearing this, Sharyati went quickly to the anthill.
Verse 16 (skanda.5.101.16)
tatrāpaśyattapovṛddhaṁ vayovṛddhaṁ ca bhārgavam| prārthayāmāsa sainyārthe prāṁjaliḥ sa mahīpatiḥ
There he beheld the son of Bhrigu, aged in austerity and aged in years; and that king, with joined palms, entreated him on behalf of his army.
Verse 17 (skanda.5.101.17)
ajñānādbālayā yatte'pakṛtaṁ tu mahīsura| imāmeva ca te kanyāṁ dadāmi sudṛḍhavratām
'O god upon earth, whatever wrong my daughter, out of childish ignorance, has done to you — I give you this very daughter, of firm vows, as recompense.'
Verse 18 (skanda.5.101.18)
bhāryārthe tvaṁ gṛhāṇemāṁ prasīda dvijasattama| tatobravīmahīpālaṁ cyavano bhārgavastathā
'Accept her as your wife; be gracious, O best of the twice-born.' Then Chyavana, the son of Bhrigu, spoke thus to the king:
Verse 19 (skanda.5.101.19)
yadyevaṁ pratigṛhyaitāṁ kṣamiṣyāmi mahīpate| dadau duhitaraṁ tasmai cyavanāya mahīpatiḥ
'If it be so, accepting her, I shall forgive you, O king.' The king then gave his daughter to Chyavana.
Verse 20 (skanda.5.101.20)
pratigṛhya ca tāṁ kanyāṁ bhagavānprasasāda ha| prāpte prasāde rājātha sasainyo viṣayaṁ gataḥ
Having accepted that maiden, the blessed sage became gracious; and once that grace was obtained, the king, with his army, returned to his own realm.
Verse 21 (skanda.5.101.21)
sukanyāpi patiṁ labdhvā tapasvinamaniṁditā| nityaṁ paryacaratprītyā tapasā niyamena ca
Sukanya too, blameless, having obtained the ascetic as her husband, ever served him with love, through austerity and discipline.
Verse 22 (skanda.5.101.22)
kasyacittvatha kālasya nāsatyāvaśvinau priye| kṛtābhiṣekāṁ vivṛtāṁ sukanyāṁ tāmapaśyatām
After some time, O beloved, the two Ashvins, called the Nasatyas, saw Sukanya, freshly bathed and unveiled.
Verse 23 (skanda.5.101.23)
tāṁ dṛṣṭvā darśanīyāṁgīṁ devarājasutāmiva| ūcatuḥ samupadrutya kasya tvamatiśobhane
Seeing her, lovely of limb, like the daughter of the king of gods, they approached and said: 'Whose are you, O most beautiful one?'
Verse 24 (skanda.5.101.24)
sā provāca mahābhāgā pativrataparāyaṇā| śaryātitanayāṁ caiva bhāryāṁ ca cyavanasya hi
That most fortunate one, devoted wholly to her husband, declared herself the daughter of Sharyati and the wife of Chyavana.
Verse 25 (skanda.5.101.25)
tatośvinau prahasyaināmabrūtāṁ punareva tu| kasmādevaṁvidhā bhūtvā jarājarjaritaṁ patim
Then the two Ashvins, laughing, said to her again: 'Being such as you are, why do you serve a husband broken down by old age?'
Verse 26 (skanda.5.101.26)
tvamapāsyeha kalyāṇi kāmabhogabahiṣkṛtā| vṛddhaṁ cyavanamutsṛjya varayasvaikamāvayoḥ
'You, O auspicious one, are here deprived of the pleasures of desire; abandon the aged Chyavana and choose one of us two instead.'
Verse 27 (skanda.5.101.27)
patyarthaṁ devagarbhābhe mā vṛthā yauvanaṁ kṛthāḥ| evamuktā sukanyā tu dasrau tāvidamabravīt
'O you who resemble a child of the gods, do not waste your youth in vain for such a husband.' Thus addressed, Sukanya said this to those two Ashvins:
Verse 28 (skanda.5.101.28)
ratāhaṁ cyavane deve maivaṁ mā paryaśaṁkatam| tato'brūtāṁ punastvenāmāvāṁ devabhiṣagvarau
'I am devoted to the god Chyavana; do not think of me thus.' Then those two, the best of divine physicians, said to her again:
Verse 29 (skanda.5.101.29)
yuvānaṁ rūpasaṁpannaṁ kariṣyāvaḥ patiṁ tava| etena samayenāvāmāmaṁtraya sumadhyame
'We shall make your husband young and endowed with beauty; on this condition, O slender-waisted one, summon us.'
Verse 30 (skanda.5.101.30)
sā tayorvacanaṁ śrutvā kathayāmāsa bhārgave| tacchrutvā cyavano bhāryāṁ kriyatāmityabhāṣata
Hearing their words, she related them to the son of Bhrigu; hearing this, Chyavana said to his wife: 'Let it be done.'
Verse 31 (skanda.5.101.31)
ūcatū rājaputrīṁ tāṁ patistava viśatvapaḥ| tato'psu cyavanaḥ śīghraṁ rūpārthī praviveśa ha
They said to the princess: 'Let your husband enter the waters.' Then Chyavana, desiring beauty, quickly entered the water.
Verse 32 (skanda.5.101.32)
aśvināvapi tatkāle saraḥ prāviśatāṁ priye| tato muhūrttāduttīrṇā sarve te sarasastadā
O beloved, at that time the two Ashvins also entered the lake; then, after a moment, all three emerged from the lake.
Verse 33 (skanda.5.101.33)
divyarūpadharāḥ sarve yuvāno divyakuṁḍalāḥ| tulyaveṣadharāścaiva manasaḥ prītivarddhanāḥ
All three, now young, wearing divine forms and divine earrings, bore identical appearance, gladdening the mind.
Verse 34 (skanda.5.101.34)
te'bruvansahitāḥ sarve vṛṇīṣvānyatamaṁ śubham| asmākamīpsitaṁ bhadre patitve varavarṇini
Together they all said: 'Choose one of us as your husband, O auspicious one; O fair one, this is our desire.'
Verse 35 (skanda.5.101.35)
sā samīkṣya tu tānsarvāṁstulyarūpadharā nsthitān| niścitya manasā buddhyā devī vavre svakaṁ patim
Having examined all of them, standing there of identical form, that devoted lady, resolving with mind and reason, chose her own husband correctly.
Verse 36 (skanda.5.101.36)
labdhvā tu cyavano bhāryāṁ vayo rūpaṁ tu vāṁchitam| hṛṣṭo'bravīnmahātejāstau nāsatyāvidaṁ vacaḥ
Having thus regained his wife, along with the youth and beauty he had desired, the greatly radiant Chyavana, delighted, spoke these words to the two Nasatyas:
Verse 37 (skanda.5.101.37)
yadahaṁ rūpasaṁpanno vayasā ca samanvitaḥ| kṛto bhavadbhyāṁ vṛddhaḥ sanbhāryāṁ ca prāptavānimām
'Since you two have made me, though old, endowed with beauty and youth, and I have regained this my wife,'
Verse 38 (skanda.5.101.38)
tasmādyuvāṁ kari ṣyāmi prītyāhaṁ somapāyinau| satyametanna saṁdeho devarājasya paśyataḥ
'therefore, out of love, I shall make you two drinkers of Soma — this is true, without doubt, even before the eyes of the king of gods.'
Verse 39 (skanda.5.101.39)
tacchrutvā hṛṣṭamanasau divaṁ devau prajagmatuḥ| yājayāmāsa somārhau nāsatyāvaśvināviti
Hearing this, the two gods, delighted at heart, went to heaven; Chyavana made the two Nasatya Ashvins worthy to receive the Soma offering.
Verse 40 (skanda.5.101.40)
bhiṣajau devatānāṁ hi karmaṇā tena garhitau| ābhyāmarthāya somaṁ tvaṁ pradāsyasi yadi svayam
Indra said: 'These two are the physicians of the gods, and by that very occupation are held in contempt — if you yourself give the Soma for their sake,'
Verse 41 (skanda.5.101.41)
vajraṁ te prahariṣyāmi ghorarūpaṁ sudāruṇam| evamuktaḥ smayannindramabhivīkṣya sa bhārgavaḥ| balinaṁ vāsavaṁ jñātvā ciṁtayāmāsa satvaram
'then I shall strike you with my dreadful and terrible thunderbolt.' Thus addressed, the son of Bhrigu, smiling, looked at Indra, and, knowing Vasava to be powerful, quickly reflected on what to do.
Verse 42 (skanda.5.101.42)
devamārādhayiṣyāmi mahādevaṁ maheśvaram| yasya karmakaraḥ śakro yasya devā vaśānugāḥ| yaḥ samartho jagadgoptā sṛṣṭisaṁhārakārakaḥ
'I shall worship the great god Maheshvara, whose very servant is Indra, to whom all the gods are subject, who alone is capable of protecting the universe, the maker of creation and dissolution.'
Verse 43 (skanda.5.101.43)
ityuktvā cyavano devi mahākālavanaṁ gataḥ| rāmeśvarasya devasya liṁgamīśānataḥ sthitam| śraddhayārādhitaṁ tena cyavanena mahātmanā
Having said this, O Devi, Chyavana went to Mahakalavana; and to the northeast of the linga of the god Rameshvara, that great-souled Chyavana worshipped a linga with faith.
Verse 44 (skanda.5.101.44)
tasya prasanno rudrastu sa vajrādabhayaṁ dadau| tasya praharato bāhuṁ staṁbhayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ
Rudra, pleased with him, granted him freedom from fear of the thunderbolt; and the son of Bhrigu paralyzed the arm of Indra as he struck.
Verse 45 (skanda.5.101.45)
samārādhanatuṣṭasya liṁgasyāsya prabhāvataḥ| etasminnaṁtare jvālā niḥsṛtā liṁgamadhyataḥ
By the power of this linga, pleased with his worship, at that moment a flame burst forth from the midst of the linga.
Verse 46 (skanda.5.101.46)
tayā devagaṇāḥ sarve dahyamānā vicetasaḥ| procurgadgadayā vācā dhūmenāṁdhīkṛte kṣaṇāḥ
Burnt by it, all the hosts of gods, bereft of their senses, blinded by the smoke in an instant, spoke in choked voices.
Verse 47 (skanda.5.101.47)
kriyetāṁ somapāvetāvaśvinau balasūdana| devānāṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā cyavanaṁ bhayapīḍitaḥ| pratyuvāca tataḥ śakraḥ praṇāmānatakaṁdharaḥ
'O slayer of Bala, let the two Ashvins be made drinkers of Soma!' Hearing the words of the gods, Indra, tormented by fear, bowing his neck in obeisance, then replied to Chyavana:
Verse 48 (skanda.5.101.48)
somapāvaśvināvetāvadyaprabhṛti bhārgava| bhaviṣyatastataḥ sarvametatsatyaṁ bravīmi te
'O son of Bhrigu, from today these two Ashvins shall be drinkers of Soma; all this shall come to pass — I speak the truth to you.'
Verse 49 (skanda.5.101.49)
mā te'tithyābhisaṁraṁbho bhaviṣyati tapodhana ||| liṁgasyāsya prabhāvo'yaṁ yadahaṁ niṣprabhīkṛtaḥ
'O lord of austerity, let there be no more anger over hospitality on your part. This is the power of this linga, by which I have been rendered powerless.'
Verse 50 (skanda.5.101.50)
tatastvannāmadheyena prasiddhirbhuvi yāsyati| ārādhitaṁ yato devi cyavanena mahātmanā
'Henceforth this linga shall gain fame on earth by your own name, O Devi, since it was worshipped by the great-souled Chyavana.'
Verse 51 (skanda.5.101.51)
cyavaneśvarametadvai khyātaṁ tribhuvane'bhavat| bhaktā ye pūjayiṣyaṁti deveśaṁ cyavaneśvaram| ājanmaprabhavaṁ pāpaṁ teṣāṁ naśyati tatkṣaṇāt
Thus this linga became renowned as Chyavaneshvara in the three worlds. Those devotees who worship the lord of gods Chyavaneshvara — their sin accumulated from birth after birth is destroyed in that very instant.
Verse 52 (skanda.5.101.52)
yaḥ paśyati naro nityaṁ cyavaneśvarasaṁjñakam| janmaduḥkhajarārogairmukto muktimavāpnuyāt
The man who ever beholds the god called Chyavaneshvara, freed from the sorrows of birth, old age, and disease, attains liberation.
Verse 53 (skanda.5.101.53)
yaṁyaṁ kāmamabhidhyāyenmanasābhimataṁ naraḥ| taṁtaṁ durlabhamāpnoti cyavaneśvaradarśanāt
Whatever desire a man cherishes in his mind, however hard to attain, he obtains it through the sight of Chyavaneshvara.
Verse 54 (skanda.5.101.54)
niyamena prapaśyaṁti ye devaṁ cyavaneśvaram| te prayāṁti tanuṁ tyaktvā madīye bhuvane priye
Those who, with discipline, behold the god Chyavaneshvara — they, upon leaving the body, O beloved, go to my own abode.
Verse 55 (skanda.5.101.55)
yaḥ śṛṇoti kathāṁ puṇyāṁ sarvapāpaharāṁ śubhām| sa puṇyātmā paraṁ sthānaṁ yāti divyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ
He who hears this sacred, auspicious tale that removes all sin — that righteous soul goes, without doubt, to the supreme divine abode.
Verse 56 (skanda.5.101.56)
bhaktihīnaḥ kriyāhīno yaḥ paśyati prasaṁgataḥ| sa puṇyāṁ gatimāpnoti yogigamyāṁ yaśasvini
Even one devoid of devotion and ritual, who beholds it merely by chance, O renowned one, attains that blessed state reachable otherwise only by yogis.
Verse 57 (skanda.5.101.57)
puṣpairvicitrairye devaṁ yajaṁte cyavaneśvaram| saṁsārārṇavamullaṁghya te yāṁti paramaṁ padam
Those who worship the god Chyavaneshvara with varied flowers, crossing over the ocean of worldly existence, attain the supreme abode.
Verse 58 (skanda.5.101.58)
eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| cyavaneśvaradevasya śṛṇu khaṁḍeśvaraṁ śive
This sin-destroying glory of the god Chyavaneshvara, O Devi, has thus been told to you; now hear, O Shive, of Khandeshvara.
