Verse 1 (skanda.5.134.1)

श्रीहर उवाच। धनुःसाहस्रनामानमीश्वरं शृणु पार्वति। त्रिषष्टिसंख्यकं दिव्यं दर्शनात्पापनाशनम्॥

śrīhara uvāca| dhanuḥsāhasranāmānamīśvaraṁ śṛṇu pārvati| triṣaṣṭisaṁkhyakaṁ divyaṁ darśanātpāpanāśanam||

Shri Hara said: "Hear, O Parvati, of the lord named Dhanuh-sahasra, the sixty-third, divine, destroying sins by the mere sight of him."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.134.2)

विदूरथोनाम नृपः ख्यातकीर्त्तिरभूद्भुवि। तस्य पुत्रद्वयं जातं सुनीतिः .सुमतिस्तथा॥

vidūrathonāma nṛpaḥ khyātakīrttirabhūdbhuvi| tasya putradvayaṁ jātaṁ sunītiḥ .sumatistathā||

"There was on earth a king named Viduratha, of renowned fame; two sons were born to him, Suniti and Sumati."

Verse 3 (skanda.5.134.3)

एकदा तु वनं यातो मृगयां स विदूरथः। ददर्श गर्त्तं सुमहद्भूमेर्मुखमिवोद्गतम्॥

ekadā tu vanaṁ yāto mṛgayāṁ sa vidūrathaḥ| dadarśa garttaṁ sumahadbhūmermukhamivodgatam||

"Once, having gone to the forest to hunt, that Viduratha beheld a vast pit, as if the very mouth of the earth had opened up."

Verse 4 (skanda.5.134.4)

तं दृष्ट्वा चिंतयामास किमेतदिति पार्थिवः। पातालविवरं मन्ये वडवानलसंनिभम्॥

taṁ dṛṣṭvā ciṁtayāmāsa kimetaditi pārthivaḥ| pātālavivaraṁ manye vaḍavānalasaṁnibham||

"Seeing it, that king pondered: 'What is this?' 'I think this must be an opening to the netherworld, resembling the submarine fire.'"

Verse 5 (skanda.5.134.5)

चिंतयन्निव तत्रासौ ददर्श विजने वने। ब्राह्मणं सुव्रतं नाम तपस्विनमकल्मषम्॥

ciṁtayanniva tatrāsau dadarśa vijane vane| brāhmaṇaṁ suvrataṁ nāma tapasvinamakalmaṣam||

"Pondering thus, he then beheld there, in the lonely forest, a brahmin named Suvrata, an ascetic free of blemish."

Verse 6 (skanda.5.134.6)

स तं पप्रच्छ नृपतिः किमेतदिति भो द्विज॥

sa taṁ papraccha nṛpatiḥ kimetaditi bho dvija||

"The king asked him: 'What is this, O brahmin?'"

Verse 7 (skanda.5.134.7)

ब्राह्मण उवाच। दानवः सुमहावीर्यो वसत्युग्रो रसातले। कुजंभोनाम विख्यातो भिनत्ति वसुधामिमाम्॥

brāhmaṇa uvāca| dānavaḥ sumahāvīryo vasatyugro rasātale| kujaṁbhonāma vikhyāto bhinatti vasudhāmimām||

"The brahmin said: 'A fierce demon of tremendous might dwells in Rasatala, known by the name Kujambha; he tears open this very earth.'"

Verse 8 (skanda.5.134.8)

तमजित्वा कथं राज्यं भोक्ष्यसे वसुधाधिप। तेन विध्वंसिता विप्रा रात्रौ निःसृत्य पार्थिव॥

tamajitvā kathaṁ rājyaṁ bhokṣyase vasudhādhipa| tena vidhvaṁsitā viprā rātrau niḥsṛtya pārthiva||

"'How, O lord of the earth, without conquering him, will you enjoy your kingdom? By him, brahmins have been destroyed, O king, as he comes forth at night.'"

Verse 9 (skanda.5.134.9)

उपद्रुतास्तथा देशा ध्वस्ताश्चैव तथाश्रमाः। आप्याययति दैत्योऽयं सबली मुशलायुधः॥

upadrutāstathā deśā dhvastāścaiva tathāśramāḥ| āpyāyayati daityo'yaṁ sabalī muśalāyudhaḥ||

"'Regions have been ravaged, and hermitages likewise destroyed; this powerful demon, armed with a club, grows ever mightier.'"

Verse 10 (skanda.5.134.10)

यदि त्वं घातयस्येनं पातालांतरगोचरम्। ततः समस्तवसुधापतिरेव भविष्यसि॥

yadi tvaṁ ghātayasyenaṁ pātālāṁtaragocaram| tataḥ samastavasudhāpatireva bhaviṣyasi||

"'If you slay him, who dwells within Patala, then you shall become sovereign lord of the entire earth.'"

Verse 11 (skanda.5.134.11)

इति विप्र वचः श्रुत्वा मंत्रयामास पार्थिवः। मंत्रिभिः सहितोऽमोघं श्रुत्वा मुशलमद्रिजे॥

iti vipra vacaḥ śrutvā maṁtrayāmāsa pārthivaḥ| maṁtribhiḥ sahito'moghaṁ śrutvā muśalamadrije||

"Hearing the brahmin's words, and hearing of that unfailing club, O daughter of the mountain, the king took counsel together with his ministers."

Verse 12 (skanda.5.134.12)

तं मंत्रं क्रियमाणं तु सूनुभ्यां सह मंत्रिभिः। तत्पार्श्ववर्त्तिनी कन्या शुश्रावाथ मुदावती॥

taṁ maṁtraṁ kriyamāṇaṁ tu sūnubhyāṁ saha maṁtribhiḥ| tatpārśvavarttinī kanyā śuśrāvātha mudāvatī||

"That counsel, being held with his two sons and ministers, was overheard by a maiden standing nearby, named Mudavati."

Verse 13 (skanda.5.134.13)

ततः कतिपयाहे तु तां कन्यां जलजेक्षणाम्। जहारोपवनाद्दैत्यः कुजंभः स्वसखीवृताम्॥

tataḥ katipayāhe tu tāṁ kanyāṁ jalajekṣaṇām| jahāropavanāddaityaḥ kujaṁbhaḥ svasakhīvṛtām||

"Then, a few days later, that demon Kujambha abducted from the pleasure-grove that lotus-eyed maiden, surrounded by her friends."

Verse 14 (skanda.5.134.14)

एतच्छ्रुत्वा महीपालः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः। उवाच पुत्रौ जानेऽहं सकुजंभो महासुरः॥

etacchrutvā mahīpālaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ| uvāca putrau jāne'haṁ sakujaṁbho mahāsuraḥ||

"Hearing this, the king's eyes grew wild with fury, and he said to his sons: 'I know that this is the work of Kujambha, that great asura—'"

Verse 15 (skanda.5.134.15)

दृष्ट्वा भूमौ पुरा गत्तें तत्र संशयिते मयि। कथितो द्विजमुख्येन मया पृष्टेन पुत्रकौ॥

dṛṣṭvā bhūmau purā gatteṁ tatra saṁśayite mayi| kathito dvijamukhyena mayā pṛṣṭena putrakau||

"'—for, my sons, having earlier seen that pit on the earth, when I was in doubt about it, I was told of him by that foremost of brahmins whom I questioned.'"

Verse 16 (skanda.5.134.16)

स हन्यतां सोऽपहर्त्ता मुदावत्याः सुदुर्मतिः। प्रस्थितौ नृपभक्त्याथ स्वसैन्यपरिवारितौ॥

sa hanyatāṁ so'paharttā mudāvatyāḥ sudurmatiḥ| prasthitau nṛpabhaktyātha svasainyaparivāritau||

"'Let him be slain, that evil-minded abductor of Mudavati.' Then, out of devotion to the king, the two sons set forth, each surrounded by his own army."

Verse 17 (skanda.5.134.17)

तौ सुतौ तत्र संप्राप्तौ पाताले पितृशासनात्। युयुधाते कुजंभेन स्वशक्त्या सेनया वृतौ॥

tau sutau tatra saṁprāptau pātāle pitṛśāsanāt| yuyudhāte kujaṁbhena svaśaktyā senayā vṛtau||

"Those two sons, arriving there in Patala by their father's command, fought with Kujambha, each surrounded by his own army, with all their might."

Verse 18 (skanda.5.134.18)

ततः परिघनिस्त्रिंशशक्तिशूलपरश्वधैः। बाणैश्चिरतरं युद्धं तेषामासीत्सदारुणम्॥

tataḥ parighanistriṁśaśaktiśūlaparaśvadhaiḥ| bāṇaiścirataraṁ yuddhaṁ teṣāmāsītsadāruṇam||

"Then, with iron clubs, swords, javelins, spears, axes, and arrows, a most terrible battle raged long between them."

Verse 19 (skanda.5.134.19)

ततो मायाबलवता तेन दैत्येन तत्क्षणात्। अमोघेनाद्वितीयेन मुशलेन वरानने॥

tato māyābalavatā tena daityena tatkṣaṇāt| amoghenādvitīyena muśalena varānane||

"Then, O fair one, by that demon, powerful through his magic, at that very instant, with his peerless and unfailing club—"

Verse 20 (skanda.5.134.20)

हत सैन्यौ रणे बद्धौ राजपुत्रौ महाबलौ॥

hata sainyau raṇe baddhau rājaputrau mahābalau||

"—their armies were slain in battle, and the two mighty princes were bound."

Verse 21 (skanda.5.134.21)

ततः श्रुत्वा महीपालो विवर्णवदनोऽभवत्। बद्धपुत्रः परामार्त्तिं जगाम गिरिपुत्रिके॥

tataḥ śrutvā mahīpālo vivarṇavadano'bhavat| baddhaputraḥ parāmārttiṁ jagāma giriputrike||

"Hearing this, O daughter of the mountain, the king's face turned pale; his sons bound, he fell into deepest anguish."

Verse 22 (skanda.5.134.22)

रुरोद बहुधात्यर्थं पुत्रस्नेहेन पार्थिवः। ततो विलपतस्तस्य मार्कंडेयो महामुनिः। अनेकसृष्टिसंहारदृष्टकार्यपरावरः॥

ruroda bahudhātyarthaṁ putrasnehena pārthivaḥ| tato vilapatastasya mārkaṁḍeyo mahāmuniḥ| anekasṛṣṭisaṁhāradṛṣṭakāryaparāvaraḥ||

"The king wept greatly and profoundly out of love for his sons. Then, as he lamented, the great sage Markandeya, who had witnessed with his own eyes the workings of many creations and dissolutions, from beginning to end—"

Verse 23 (skanda.5.134.23)

उदितादित्यसंकाशः सप्तकल्पानुगो वशी। आजगाम नृपाभ्याशे विलपंतं ददर्श सः। राजानं कथयामास त्रिकालज्ञो महामुनिः॥

uditādityasaṁkāśaḥ saptakalpānugo vaśī| ājagāma nṛpābhyāśe vilapaṁtaṁ dadarśa saḥ| rājānaṁ kathayāmāsa trikālajño mahāmuniḥ||

"—shining like the risen sun, who had lived through seven kalpas, self-controlled, came near the king; seeing him lamenting, that great sage, knower of the three times, spoke to him:"

Verse 24 (skanda.5.134.24)

मा शुचस्त्वं महीपाल क्षत्त्रियोऽसि दृढव्रतः। क्व शोक क्व महीपालो दुर्जयो लोकपालवत्॥

mā śucastvaṁ mahīpāla kṣattriyo'si dṛḍhavrataḥ| kva śoka kva mahīpālo durjayo lokapālavat||

"'Do not grieve, O king; you are a kshatriya, firm in your vows. Where is grief, and where a king unconquerable like a guardian of the world?'"

Verse 25 (skanda.5.134.25)

शोकं कुपुरुषाचीर्णं त्यज त्वं राजसत्तम। उद्यमं कुरु राजेंद्र कुजंभं घातयिष्यसि॥

śokaṁ kupuruṣācīrṇaṁ tyaja tvaṁ rājasattama| udyamaṁ kuru rājeṁdra kujaṁbhaṁ ghātayiṣyasi||

"'Abandon this grief, practiced by base men, O best of kings; make effort instead, O lord of kings — you shall slay Kujambha.'"

Verse 26 (skanda.5.134.26)

नात्युच्चं मेरुशिखरं नातिनीचं रसातलम्। व्यवसायः सखा यस्य नास्ति दूरे महोदधिः॥

nātyuccaṁ meruśikharaṁ nātinīcaṁ rasātalam| vyavasāyaḥ sakhā yasya nāsti dūre mahodadhiḥ||

"'For one whose companion is effort, the peak of Meru is not too high, nor Rasatala too low, nor the great ocean too far.'"

Verse 27 (skanda.5.134.27)

महाकालवने लिंगमाराधय समाहितः। रूपेश्वरस्य देवस्य पार्श्वे दक्षिणतः स्थितम्॥

mahākālavane liṁgamārādhaya samāhitaḥ| rūpeśvarasya devasya pārśve dakṣiṇataḥ sthitam||

"'With focused mind, worship the linga in Mahakalavana, standing to the south of the god Rupeshvara.'"

Verse 28 (skanda.5.134.28)

धनुःसाहस्रतुल्यं तु मुशलस्य निवारणम्। धनुः प्राप्स्यसि राजेंद्र कुजंभं विनिपातय॥

dhanuḥsāhasratulyaṁ tu muśalasya nivāraṇam| dhanuḥ prāpsyasi rājeṁdra kujaṁbhaṁ vinipātaya||

"'A bow equal in might to a thousand bows, capable of warding off the club — that bow you shall obtain, O lord of kings; strike down Kujambha with it.'"

Verse 29 (skanda.5.134.29)

धनुःसाहस्रहस्तैस्तु रक्षितं योधसत्तमैः। लिंगं देवासुरैर्युद्धे सहस्राक्षेण सेवितम्। इंद्रेण च धनुर्लब्धं जंभो वै येन पातितः॥

dhanuḥsāhasrahastaistu rakṣitaṁ yodhasattamaiḥ| liṁgaṁ devāsurairyuddhe sahasrākṣeṇa sevitam| iṁdreṇa ca dhanurlabdhaṁ jaṁbho vai yena pātitaḥ||

"'That linga is guarded by a thousand best warriors bearing bows; it was served by the thousand-eyed Indra in the war of gods and demons — and by him that bow was obtained, by which Jambha was struck down.'"

Verse 30 (skanda.5.134.30)

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स राजाथ विदूरथः। जगाम त्वरितो देवि महाकालवनं शुभम्॥

tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā sa rājātha vidūrathaḥ| jagāma tvarito devi mahākālavanaṁ śubham||

"Hearing his words, that king Viduratha then went swiftly, O Devi, to the auspicious Mahakalavana."

Verse 31 (skanda.5.134.31)

ददर्श तत्र तल्लिंगं पूजयामास भक्तितः। तस्य तुष्टस्तदा देवो ददौ दिव्यं धनुस्तदा॥

dadarśa tatra talliṁgaṁ pūjayāmāsa bhaktitaḥ| tasya tuṣṭastadā devo dadau divyaṁ dhanustadā||

"There he beheld that linga and worshipped it with devotion; and that god, pleased with him, then gave him a divine bow."

Verse 32 (skanda.5.134.32)

धनुःसाहस्रतुल्यं च मुशलस्य निवारणम्। धनुर्लब्ध्वा तदा राजा बद्धगोधांगुलित्रवान्। जगाम धीरः पातालं तेन गर्तेन सत्वरम्॥

dhanuḥsāhasratulyaṁ ca muśalasya nivāraṇam| dhanurlabdhvā tadā rājā baddhagodhāṁgulitravān| jagāma dhīraḥ pātālaṁ tena gartena satvaram||

"That bow was equal in might to a thousand bows, capable of warding off the club. Having obtained the bow, and having bound on his leather finger-guard, the resolute king went swiftly down to Patala through that very pit."

Verse 33 (skanda.5.134.33)

ततो ज्यास्वनमत्युग्रं स चक्रे पार्थिवस्तदा। येन पातालमखिलमासीदापूरितांतरम्॥

tato jyāsvanamatyugraṁ sa cakre pārthivastadā| yena pātālamakhilamāsīdāpūritāṁtaram||

"There the king then made a most terrible twang of his bowstring, by which the whole of Patala was filled through and through."

Verse 34 (skanda.5.134.34)

ततो ज्यास्वनमाकर्ण्य कुजंभो दानवेश्वरः। आजगामातिकोपेन स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः॥

tato jyāsvanamākarṇya kujaṁbho dānaveśvaraḥ| ājagāmātikopena svasainyaparivāritaḥ||

"Hearing that twang, Kujambha, lord of the danavas, came forth in great fury, surrounded by his own army."

Verse 35 (skanda.5.134.35)

ततो युद्धमभूत्तस्य सह राज्ञा वरानने। दिनानि त्रीणि स यदा योधितस्तेन दानवः॥

tato yuddhamabhūttasya saha rājñā varānane| dināni trīṇi sa yadā yodhitastena dānavaḥ||

"Then, O fair one, a battle took place between him and the king; for three days that danava was fought by him."

Verse 36 (skanda.5.134.36)

ततः कोपपरीतात्मा मुशलायाभ्यधावत। गंधैर्माल्यैस्तथा धूपैः पूज्यमानः स तिष्ठति॥

tataḥ kopaparītātmā muśalāyābhyadhāvata| gaṁdhairmālyaistathā dhūpaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ sa tiṣṭhati||

"Then, overcome with rage, he rushed for his club — which stood there, being worshipped with perfumes, garlands, and incense."

Verse 37 (skanda.5.134.37)

यावद्गृह्णाति मुशलं तावत्सा च मुदावती। पस्पर्श चंदनव्याजैरनेकैश्च पुनःपुनः॥

yāvadgṛhṇāti muśalaṁ tāvatsā ca mudāvatī| pasparśa caṁdanavyājairanekaiśca punaḥpunaḥ||

"But even as he sought to seize the club, Mudavati kept touching it again and again, under the pretext of anointing it with sandal-paste and other such things."

Verse 38 (skanda.5.134.38)

ततः स गत्वा युयुधे मुसलेनासुरेश्वरः। तदा मुसलपातास्ते धनुषा निष्प्रभीकृताः॥

tataḥ sa gatvā yuyudhe musalenāsureśvaraḥ| tadā musalapātāste dhanuṣā niṣprabhīkṛtāḥ||

"Then that lord of asuras went and fought with his club; but then the blows of that club were rendered powerless by the bow."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.134.39)

धनुर्ज्याघातशब्देन पतिते भूतले तदा। गतो वैवस्वतं लोकं कुजंभोनाम दानवः॥

dhanurjyāghātaśabdena patite bhūtale tadā| gato vaivasvataṁ lokaṁ kujaṁbhonāma dānavaḥ||

"Then, at the sound of the bowstring's blow, he fell upon the earth, and the danava named Kujambha went to the world of Vaivasvata."

Verse 40 (skanda.5.134.40)

ततोऽपतत्पुष्पवृष्टिस्तस्योपरि महीपतेः। जगुर्गंधर्वपतयो देववाद्यानि सस्वनुः॥

tato'patatpuṣpavṛṣṭistasyopari mahīpateḥ| jagurgaṁdharvapatayo devavādyāni sasvanuḥ||

"Then a shower of flowers fell upon that king, the lords of the gandharvas sang, and divine instruments resounded."

Verse 41 (skanda.5.134.41)

स चापि राजा तं हत्वा पुत्रौ लब्ध्वा सुतां तदा। मुदावतीं मुदा युक्तो हर्षगद्गदनिर्भरः॥

sa cāpi rājā taṁ hatvā putrau labdhvā sutāṁ tadā| mudāvatīṁ mudā yukto harṣagadgadanirbharaḥ||

"And that king, having slain him, having recovered his two sons and then the maiden Mudavati, filled with joy, was overcome with delight, his voice choked with emotion."

Verse 42 (skanda.5.134.42)

पुत्राभ्यां सहितो देवि सुसंपूर्णमनोरथः। सांतःपुरपरीवारः पुनरायाद्वरानने॥

putrābhyāṁ sahito devi susaṁpūrṇamanorathaḥ| sāṁtaḥpuraparīvāraḥ punarāyādvarānane||

"Together with his two sons, O Devi, his desire fully accomplished, and with his retinue of the inner apartments, O fair one, he returned again—"

Verse 43 (skanda.5.134.43)

महाकालवने रम्ये यत्र तल्लिंगमुत्तमम्। पूजयामास रत्नैश्च वस्त्रैराभरणैस्तथा॥

mahākālavane ramye yatra talliṁgamuttamam| pūjayāmāsa ratnaiśca vastrairābharaṇaistathā||

"—to lovely Mahakalavana, where that excellent linga stood, and worshipped it with jewels, garments, and ornaments."

Verse 44 (skanda.5.134.44)

ततः स पूजितो देवैः शक्रेण च पुनःपुनः। अस्य लिंगस्य माहात्म्याद्धनुः प्राप्तं नृपेण॥

tataḥ sa pūjito devaiḥ śakreṇa ca punaḥpunaḥ| asya liṁgasya māhātmyāddhanuḥ prāptaṁ nṛpeṇa||

"Then he was honored again and again by the gods and by Indra; through the glory of this linga alone had the bow been obtained by the king."

Verse 45 (skanda.5.134.45)

कुजंभोऽपि हतो दैत्यो देवविद्वेषकारकः। धनुःसाहस्रनामायमतः ख्यातिं गमिष्यति॥

kujaṁbho'pi hato daityo devavidveṣakārakaḥ| dhanuḥsāhasranāmāyamataḥ khyātiṁ gamiṣyati||

"The demon Kujambha too, hater of the gods, was slain; hence this linga shall go by the name of Dhanuh-sahasra and attain renown."

Verse 46 (skanda.5.134.46)

भक्त्या ये पूजयिष्यंति धनुःसाहस्रमीश्वरम्। यास्यन्ति शत्रवस्तेषां क्षयं नैवात्र संशयः॥

bhaktyā ye pūjayiṣyaṁti dhanuḥsāhasramīśvaram| yāsyanti śatravasteṣāṁ kṣayaṁ naivātra saṁśayaḥ||

"'Those who worship the lord Dhanuh-sahasra with devotion — their enemies shall surely go to destruction, of this there is no doubt.'"

Verse 47 (skanda.5.134.47)

अर्चिते देवदेवेशे धनुःसाहस्रिके शिवे। अर्चिताः सर्वदेवाः स्युर्वरदाश्च न संशयः॥

arcite devadeveśe dhanuḥsāhasrike śive| arcitāḥ sarvadevāḥ syurvaradāśca na saṁśayaḥ||

"'When Shiva Dhanuh-sahasrika, lord of the gods, is worshipped, all the gods are thereby worshipped and become bestowers of boons, without doubt.'"

Verse 48 (skanda.5.134.48)

प्रातर्मध्येऽपराह्णे च धनुःसाहस्रकं शिवम्। ये नमन्ति नरा नित्यं न ते नरकभोगिनः॥

prātarmadhye'parāhṇe ca dhanuḥsāhasrakaṁ śivam| ye namanti narā nityaṁ na te narakabhoginaḥ||

"'Those men who ever bow, morning, noon, and evening, to Shiva Dhanuh-sahasraka, never become sufferers of hell.'"

Verse 49 (skanda.5.134.49)

तीर्थानां च यथा गंगा रक्षिता योधसत्तमैः। तथायं रक्षको देवो नाम्ना धनुःसहस्रकः॥

tīrthānāṁ ca yathā gaṁgā rakṣitā yodhasattamaiḥ| tathāyaṁ rakṣako devo nāmnā dhanuḥsahasrakaḥ||

"'As the Ganga, among the sacred fords, is protected by the best of warriors, so too this god, by name Dhanuh-sahasraka, is a protector.'"

Verse 50 (skanda.5.134.50)

तत्र गंगादितीर्थानि विद्यन्ते विविधानि च। सुरहस्यातिपुण्यानि सद्यः पापहराणि च॥

tatra gaṁgāditīrthāni vidyante vividhāni ca| surahasyātipuṇyāni sadyaḥ pāpaharāṇi ca||

"'There exist there the Ganga and other sacred fords of various kinds, most sacred and secret to the gods, instantly destroying sin.'"

Verse 51 (skanda.5.134.51)

तेषां फलं विनिर्दिष्टं ये पश्यन्ति तु भक्तितः। धनुःसाहस्रकं नाम सदा शत्रुक्षयंकरम्॥

teṣāṁ phalaṁ vinirdiṣṭaṁ ye paśyanti tu bhaktitaḥ| dhanuḥsāhasrakaṁ nāma sadā śatrukṣayaṁkaram||

"'Their fruit has been declared for those who behold with devotion the one named Dhanuh-sahasraka, ever the destroyer of enemies.'"

एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापना शनः। धनुःसाहस्रदेवस्य देवं पशुपतिं शृणु॥

eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanā śanaḥ| dhanuḥsāhasradevasya devaṁ paśupatiṁ śṛṇu||

"This, O Devi, is the sin-destroying power of the god Dhanuh-sahasra that I have told you; now hear of the god Pashupati."
