The Glory of Chandradityeshvara

Chapter 142All chaptersChapter 144

Verse 1 (skanda.5.143.1)

īśvara uvāca| dvisaptatīśvaraṁ viddhi caṁdrādityeśvaraṁ priye| yasya darśanamātreṇa kṛtakṛtyo naro bhavet||

Ishvara said: Know, O beloved, the seventy-second lord as Chandradityeshvara, by the mere sight of whom a man attains fulfilment.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.143.2)

śaṁbareṇa purā devi nirjitāḥ saṁgare surāḥ| naṣṭā raṇaṁ parityajya prāṇatrāṇaparāyaṇāḥ||

Long ago, O goddess, the gods were vanquished in battle by Shambara; abandoning the fight, they fled, intent only on saving their lives.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.143.3)

grastaṁ ca rāhuṇā dṛṣṭvā śaśāṁkaṁ bhayavihvalam| vinatāyāḥ suto jyeṣṭhaḥ proktaḥ sūryeṇa sārathiḥ||

Beholding the moon, seized by Rahu and overcome with fear, the Sun spoke to his charioteer, the eldest son of Vinata.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.143.4)

vahāruṇa rathaṁ śīghraṁ yatra yuddhaṁ na vidyate| śrūyate caṁdrasūryau tau daityānāṁ balavattarau||

"O Aruna, drive the chariot swiftly to where there is no battle. It is said that we two, Moon and Sun, are the mightiest targets for the daityas."

Verse 5 (skanda.5.143.5)

"Rahu, terrible with jutting fangs, is the third fearsome one. In the battle it is not known whether the Moon is slain or has fled."

Verse 6 (skanda.5.143.6)

"It is not known where Indra is, nor where Varuna has gone in the battle. Yama's whereabouts are unknown, and what shall be said of Kubera?"

Verse 7 (skanda.5.143.7)

evamukto'ruṇo rugṇo raviṇā raṇamadhyataḥ| rathaṁ saṁprerayāmāsa yatra yuddhaṁ na vidyate||

Thus addressed by the Sun, the wounded Aruna drove the chariot out from the midst of the battle, to a place free of fighting.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.143.8)

etasminnaṁtare caṁdraḥ samāyātastu tatkṣaṇāt| rāhugrahagṛhīto'pi yatra devo divaspatiḥ||

Meanwhile the Moon, though seized by the planet Rahu, arrived at that very instant at the place where the Sun, lord of the sky, was.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.143.9)

saṁtrastaḥ sa vilolākṣaḥ kṣaṇamātramacetanaḥ| babhūva sahasā caṁdro dṛṣṭvā devaṁ divākaram||

Terrified and with rolling eyes, the Moon suddenly became senseless for an instant upon beholding the god Divakara.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.143.10)

śaṁbareṇa raṇe ruddhā rudrāśca bhayavidrutāḥ| jagmurdiśo daśa bhayādasurendravibhīṣitāḥ||

The Rudras too, pressed hard by Shambara in the battle, fled in terror; frightened by that lord of asuras, they scattered in all ten directions.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.143.11)

sādhyāḥ sarve bhayatrastā gatā yatra na dānavāḥ| teṣu bhagneṣu deveṣu hataśiṣṭeṣu saṁgare||

All the Sadhyas, panic-stricken, fled to wherever the danavas were not. When the gods were thus routed in the battle, and the survivors scattered,

Verse 12 (skanda.5.143.12)

vyadhamatsarvagātrāṇi varmāṇi ca janakṣaye| palāyamānadevānāmasuro balavaccharaiḥ||

that mighty asura, with his arrows, pierced the limbs and armour of the fleeing gods, amid the great carnage.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.143.13)

pṛṣṭhato nijaghānātha nikṛttāśca sahasraśaḥ| ahaṁ naṣṭacchalenaiva vyagrībhūte'sure tadā||

He struck them down from behind, and they were cut down by the thousand. I too, feigning flight, slipped away while the asura was thus engaged.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.143.14)

āsuraṁ rūpamāsthāya prāṇatrāṇaparāyaṇaḥ| śīghraṁ ca gamyate tāvadyāvannāyāti śaṁbaraḥ||

Taking on an asura-like form, intent only on saving my life — let us hasten onward, before Shambara catches up with us.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.143.15)

ityuktaṁ niśināthena bhayabhītena pārvati| caṁdrādityau kṣaṇānnītāvaruṇena rathena vai||

Thus spoke the fear-stricken lord of night, O Parvati. And in a moment Aruna carried the Moon and the Sun away in his chariot.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.143.16)

yatra devo jagannātho garuḍastho janārdanaḥ| surasaṁghātasaṁketakiṁnarākīrṇakaṁdare||

They went to where the divine lord of the world, Janardana, was mounted upon Garuda — a mountain haunt of gods, its caves thronged with kinnaras.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.143.17)

maṁdare suranārīṇāṁ naṁdane varacaṁdane| dṛṣṭvā tatra jagannāthaṁ śaṁkhacakragadādharam| stutiṁ tau cakraturdevau caṁdrasūryau yaśasvini||

On Mount Mandara, in the celestial women's Nandana grove, amid fine sandal trees, beholding there the lord of the world bearing conch, discus and mace, O glorious one, those two illustrious gods, Moon and Sun, offered him praise.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.143.18)

namo lokatrayādhyakṣa svaprabhājitabhāskara| namo viṣṇo namo jiṣṇo namaste kaiṭabhāṁtaka||

"Salutation to you, lord of the three worlds, whose own radiance outshines the Sun! Salutation to Vishnu! Salutation to the Victorious One! Salutation to you, slayer of Kaitabha!

Verse 19 (skanda.5.143.19)

namaḥ sarvakriyākartre jagattrātre ca te namaḥ| namaścakrāyudhādhṛṣya namo dānavaghātine||

Salutation to the doer of every act, salutation to you, protector of the world! Salutation to the wielder of the invincible discus, salutation to the slayer of danavas!

Verse 20 (skanda.5.143.20)

namaḥ kramatrayākrāṁtatrailokyāṁtarhitodbhava| namaḥ pracaṁḍadaityeṁdrakulakāla mahābala||

Salutation to you who traversed the three worlds in three strides, appearing and vanishing within them! Salutation, O mighty one, death itself to the lineages of fierce lords of daityas!

Verse 21 (skanda.5.143.21)

namo nābhihradodbhūtapadmagarbhamahāprabho| janitāśeṣalokeśaviraṁcāya mahādyute||

Salutation to you, from whose navel-lake sprang the lotus, from whose womb arose the great lord — you who begot Brahma, the ruler of all worlds, O being of great splendour!

Verse 22 (skanda.5.143.22)

amarāriviṁāśāya mahāsamaraśāline| namaste vibudhādhīśa śaraṇaṁ bhava naḥ prabho||

Salutation to you, destroyer of the enemies of the gods, master of great battles! O lord of the wise, O sovereign, become our refuge!"

Verse 23 (skanda.5.143.23)

caṁdrasūryakṛtaṁ stotraṁ śrutvā devo janārdanaḥ| āśvāsya stutipūrveṇa prāha devo hyadhokṣajaḥ||

Hearing this hymn offered by the Moon and the Sun, the god Janardana, comforting them in reply to their praise, that god Adhokshaja spoke.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.143.24)

viṣṇuruvāca| svāgataṁ caṁdrasūryau bho bhavaṁtau stutibhājanau| kiṁ kāraṇamiha prāptau tadbrūtāṁ vigatajvarau||

Vishnu said: "Welcome, O Moon and Sun, both worthy of praise! Tell me, free of your distress, what has brought you here."

Verse 25 (skanda.5.143.25)

nārāyaṇenaivamuktau procatuścaṁdrabhāskarau| samare nirjitā devāḥ śaṁbareṇa durātmanā||

Thus addressed by Narayana, the Moon and Sun said: "The gods have been vanquished in battle by the evil-souled Shambara."

Verse 26 (skanda.5.143.26)

na jñātāḥ kva gatāste ca āvāṁ naṣṭau prayatnataḥ| aruṇena ihānītau dṛṣṭastvaṁ deva daivataḥ||

"It is not known where they have gone; we two also fled with all our effort. Brought here by Aruna, O god, we have, by good fortune, beheld you."

Verse 27 (skanda.5.143.27)

śaṁbareṇa jitā devāḥ sa ca sarvatra dṛśyate| sthale caiva jale caiva śaṁbaraḥ krūrapauruṣaḥ||

"The gods have been defeated by Shambara, and that man of cruel might, Shambara, is to be seen everywhere, both on land and in water."

Verse 28 (skanda.5.143.28)

naśyatāṁ tridaśeṁdrāṇāṁ pṛṣṭhataḥ śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ| cicchedaḥ naravarmāṇi cchatrāṇi ca dhanūṁṣi ca||

"As the lords of the gods fled, he pursued them from behind with showers of arrows, cutting to pieces their armour, their parasols, and their bows.

Verse 29 (skanda.5.143.29)

varmāṇi ca vicitrāṇi mukuṭāni mahāṁti ca| pṛthūni cāpi cāpāni carmāṇi vividhāni ca||

"He shattered their splendid armour, their great crowns, their broad bows, and their shields of every kind.

Verse 30 (skanda.5.143.30)

gajāśca madasaṁbhinnakapolāḥ koṭiśaḥ surāḥ| vājinaścāmarāpīḍā ratnaparyāṇabhūṣaṇāḥ||

"Elephants by the millions, their temples streaming with rut-fluid, and horses decked with yak-tail plumes and jewelled saddles —

Verse 31 (skanda.5.143.31)

vibudhā dhvastasannāhā vigajā vipadātinaḥ| vipadāmākarākārā babhūva suravāhinī||

the gods themselves, stripped of their mail, bereft of elephants and foot-soldiers — the army of the gods became a very mine of calamities.

Verse 32 (skanda.5.143.32)

tato daityādhipo mānī parivṛtto mahāraṇāt| nirjitārirmahātejā jvālāvāniva pāvakaḥ||

"Then that proud lord of the daityas, his foes vanquished, of great splendour, blazing like fire, turned back from the great battle.

Verse 33 (skanda.5.143.33)

vaṁdyamāno munigaṇaiḥ stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ| ānaṁdito jayāśīrbhiḥ pravaraiḥ daityapuṁgavaiḥ||

Revered by hosts of sages, praised by great seers, and gladdened by the victory-blessings of the foremost daitya lords,

Verse 34 (skanda.5.143.34)

tatra sarvarddhisaṁpūrṇamāsanaṁ hemabhūṣaṇam| adhyatiṣṭhata daityeṁdrastatra maṁgalaveśmani| tatropaviṣṭaḥ śuśubhe daityarājo mahāyaśāḥ||

that lord of daityas took his seat there, in that auspicious hall, upon a throne complete with every splendour, adorned with gold. Seated there, that daitya king of great renown shone resplendent.

Verse 35 (skanda.5.143.35)

His limbs anointed with divine sandal-paste, radiant with celestial flowers, his form graced by his crown, fanned with white yak-tail whisks, and attended by daitya lords risen again from death,

Verse 36 (skanda.5.143.36)

kratubhirmūrttimadbhiśca sevyamāno mahābalaḥ| sarvapuṣpotkarayutairnānāvihaganādibhiḥ||

served by embodied sacrifices, surrounded by heaps of every flower and the calls of birds of many kinds, that mighty one —

Verse 37 (skanda.5.143.37)

tatra śrīratulā loke tatra lakṣmīrnirargalā| tatra kāṁtirdyutiḥ śobhā śaṁbaro yatra dānavaḥ||

there was unequalled splendour in the world; there was unbridled fortune — there was radiance, lustre, and beauty, wherever the danava Shambara was.

Verse 38 (skanda.5.143.38)

evaṁ sa daityanṛpatiḥ sabhṛtyastatra modate| svayamiṁdrastu saṁjātaścaṁdrasūryau kṛtau svakau||

"Thus does that king of daityas, with his servants, rejoice there. He himself has become as it were Indra, and has made both Moon and Sun his own."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.143.39)

tayoriti vacaḥ śrutvā sa devaḥ puruṣottamaḥ| ciraṁ dhyātvā svamanasi tadāvocadidaṁ priye||

Hearing their words, that god, Purushottama, after pondering long within his own mind, then spoke thus, O beloved.

Verse 40 (skanda.5.143.40)

caṁdrasūryau mayā jñātaṁ śaṁbarasya viceṣṭitam| brahmaṇo varadānena bhoktavyaṁ tapasaḥ phalam||

"O Moon and Sun, I have understood Shambara's doings. By reason of Brahma's boon, he must first enjoy the fruit of his own austerity.

Verse 41 (skanda.5.143.41)

śaṁbarāya purā kṣiptaṁ vajraṁ kuliśapāṇinā| hṛdaye nihataḥ so'pi tathāpi na mṛto'suraḥ||

Long ago the wielder of the thunderbolt hurled his vajra at Shambara; struck in the heart, yet that asura did not die.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.143.42)

gamyatāṁ ca mayājñaptau mahākālavanottame| caṁdrasūryau mamādeśāttatra siddhiṁ ca lapsyatha||

"Go, both of you, commanded by me, to the excellent Mahakalavana; O Moon and Sun, by my direction you shall attain accomplishment there."

Verse 43 (skanda.5.143.43)

tatrānaṁto mahākālo liṁgarūpo maheśvaraḥ| tasya cottarato deśe liṁgaṁ kāmapradaṁ śivam||

"There the boundless Mahakala, the great lord, dwells in the form of a linga; and to its north stands a Shiva-linga that grants every desire.

Verse 44 (skanda.5.143.44)

tasya darśanamātreṇa kṛtakṛtyau bhaviṣyathaḥ| tasya jvālāsamūhena maraṇaṁ śaṁbarasya ca| bhaviṣyati na saṁdehastasmāttatraiva gamyatām||

"By merely beholding it you shall both attain your purpose. By the mass of its flames, Shambara's death shall come, without doubt. Therefore go there.

Verse 45 (skanda.5.143.45)

ityuktau vāsudevena caṁdrasūryau yaśasvini| satvaraṁ hṛṣṭaromāṇau mahākālavanaṁ gatau||

Thus addressed by Vasudeva, O glorious one, the Moon and Sun, their hair standing on end with joy, went swiftly to Mahakalavana.

Verse 46 (skanda.5.143.46)

tatra dṛṣṭvā mahādevaṁ tejaso rāśimavyayam| stutaṁ ca vividhaiḥ stotraiḥ pūjitaṁ kusumaiḥ śubhaiḥ||

There they beheld Mahadeva, an imperishable mass of splendour, praised with manifold hymns and worshipped with auspicious flowers.

Verse 47 (skanda.5.143.47)

etasminnaṁtare vāṇī liṁgamadhyātsamutthitā| āśvāsayaṁtī tarasā caṁdrasūryau himātmaje||

Meanwhile, O daughter of the Himalaya, a voice arose from within the linga, swiftly comforting the Moon and the Sun.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.143.48)

hataḥ sa śaṁbaro daityo gatau tau caṁdrabhāskarau| daityānāṁ nirmitau duṣṭau pātālāṁtarasaṁsthitau||

That daitya Shambara is slain; you, Moon and Sun, are restored. Those two evil shadow-forms, fashioned by the daityas, shall remain confined within the netherworld.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.143.49)

rāhuketū grahāṁte tu kṛtau samayapūrvakau| sthāpitaḥ svapade śakro devaiḥ saha na saṁśayaḥ||

"Rahu and Ketu have been set among the planets, bound by an appointed limit. Indra, together with the gods, has been reinstated in his own place, without doubt.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.143.50)

svaṁ svaṁ sthānaṁ gatāḥ sarve lokapālā mudā yutāḥ| kāṁtipratāpasaṁyuktau bhavaṁtau bhuvanatraye||

"All the guardians of the quarters, filled with joy, have returned each to his own place. You two shall remain endowed with splendour and majesty throughout the three worlds.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.143.51)

gagane grahanakṣatraiḥ sahitau vicariṣyathaḥ| pūrvavatpuṇyapāpānāṁ sākṣibhūtau bhaviṣyathaḥ||

"You shall move through the sky together with the planets and constellations, and as before you shall remain the witnesses of virtue and sin."

Verse 52 (skanda.5.143.52)

ityuktau caṁdrasūryau tu tayā vāṇyā varānane| saṁtuṣṭau kṛtakṛtyau tu saṁjātau liṁgadarśanāt||

Thus addressed by that voice, O fair-faced one, the Moon and the Sun were content, and became fulfilled by the sight of that linga.

Verse 53 (skanda.5.143.53)

etasminnaṁtare devā vimānasthā samāgatāḥ| yatra caṁdraśca sūryaśca mahākālavane śubhau||

Meanwhile the gods, mounted on their celestial cars, arrived at the place in Mahakalavana where those two auspicious ones, the Moon and Sun, were.

Verse 54 (skanda.5.143.54)

jñātvā liṁgasya māhātmyaṁ nāma cakuḥ samāhitāḥ| sevitaṁ caṁdrasūryābhyāṁ liṁgaṁ tejomayaṁ param||

Understanding the greatness of the linga, they, with concentrated minds, gave it a name — that supreme, light-filled linga, worshipped by the Moon and the Sun,

Verse 55 (skanda.5.143.55)

caṁdrādityeśvaraṁnāma khyātiṁ yāsyati bhūtale| liṁgasyāsya samutthena jvālāsaṁghena śaṁbaraḥ| dagdho bhṛtyajanaiḥ sārddhaṁ caṁdrasūryānusevanāt||

shall become renowned on earth by the name Chandradityeshvara. By the mass of flames that rose from this linga, Shambara, together with his servants, was consumed — all through the service rendered by the Moon and Sun.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.143.56)
