Avanti Khanda · Chapter 144
The Glory of Karabheshvara
Verse 1 (skanda.5.144.1)
śrīhara uvāca| trisaptatīśvaraṁ viddhi karabheśaṁ varānane| yasya darśanamātreṇa kuyonirnaiva labhyate||
Shri Hara said: Know, O fair-faced one, the seventy-third lord as Karabhesha, by the mere sight of whom one never attains a lowly birth.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.144.2)
vīraketurabhūddhīmānayodhyāyā mahīpatiḥ| vidyāvinayasaubhāgyalāvaṇyāmṛtapūritaḥ||
There was a wise king of Ayodhya named Vireketu, brimming with the nectar of learning, humility, good fortune, and beauty.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.144.3)
sa samyakpālayāmāsa prajāḥ putrānivaurasān| atītānāgatajñānapariniṣṭhitamānasaḥ||
He nurtured his subjects well, as if they were his own children, his mind firmly grounded in knowledge of the past and the future.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.144.4)
athaikasmindine rājā jagāma gahanaṁ vanam| mṛgasiṁhagajākīrṇaṁ vyāghrasaṁbarasaṁkulam||
One day the king went into a dense forest, teeming with deer, lions, and elephants, and thronged with tigers and sambar deer.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.144.5)
sa tatra vividhānvanyānvivyādha paravīrahā| mṛgāṁśca mahiṣāṁścaiva varāhāṁśca sahasraśaḥ||
That slayer of hostile champions shot down various forest creatures there, striking deer, buffaloes, and boars by the thousand.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.144.6)
loḍitaṁ tadvanaṁ sarvaṁ paśupakṣimṛgākulam| rahitaṁ śvāpadaiḥ sarvaiḥ kṛtaṁ tena mahībhṛtā||
That whole forest, once full of beasts, birds, and deer, was thus scoured by the king and left empty of all wild creatures.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.144.7)
yadā na śvāpadāstasmindṛśyate gahane vane| tadā viddhastu karabho bāṇenānataparvaṇā||
When no wild beast was any longer to be seen in that dense forest, a camel was struck by an arrow with smooth, close-set joints.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.144.8)
sa cāpi karabho devi bāṇamādāya satvaram| viddho'pi niḥsṛto'tyarthaṁ rājñastasyaiva paśyataḥ| sa ca rājā balī tūrṇaṁ sasāra karabhaṁ prati||
That camel too, O goddess, though pierced and bearing the arrow, sped away swiftly right before the king's own eyes; and that mighty king at once gave chase after the camel.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.144.9)
Then that swift camel ran on through low and rough ground; and in but a moment, O goddess, it had covered many leagues.
Verse 10 (skanda.5.144.10)
tataḥ sa rājā tāruṇyā daurasena balena ca| sasāra bāṇāsanadhṛksakhaḍgaḥ sahayo nṛpaḥ||
Then that king, in the strength of his youth and his mighty arms, bow and sword in hand, mounted on his steed, pursued him.
Verse 11 (skanda.5.144.11)
tato nadānnadīścaiva palvalāni vanāni ca| atikramyānatikramya sasāraiva vanecaram||
Crossing rivers and streams, ponds and forests, without pause he kept chasing that forest-dweller.
Verse 12 (skanda.5.144.12)
sa cāpi karabho devi āsādyāsādya taṁ nṛpam| punarapyeti javano javena mahatā tataḥ||
That camel too, O goddess, would draw near the king again and again, only to bound away once more with tremendous speed.
Verse 13 (skanda.5.144.13)
sa tasya bāṇairbahubhiḥ karabho vihvalīkṛtaḥ| pṛṣṭhataḥ pārśvataścaiva punarabhyeti cāṁtikam| punaśca javamāsyāya pārśve cāgre ca dṛśyate||
Distressed by his many arrows, the camel would come near now from behind, now from the side, and then, gathering speed again, appear now beside him, now ahead.
Verse 14 (skanda.5.144.14)
athāraṇyaṁ mahāraudraṁ praviṣṭaḥ karabhastadā| antardhānaṁ jagāmāśu sa ca rājā vane'viśat||
Then that camel, entering a most fearsome forest, suddenly vanished from sight; and the king too went on into that forest.
Verse 15 (skanda.5.144.15)
praviśya ca mahāraṇyaṁ tāpasānāmathāśramam| āsasāda tato rājā śrāṁtāśvopāviśatpunaḥ||
Entering that great forest, the king came upon a hermitage of ascetics, and there, his horse exhausted, he sat down to rest.
Verse 16 (skanda.5.144.16)
taṁ kārmukakaraṁ dṛṣṭvā śramārttaṁ kṣudhitaṁ tadā| samabhyetyarṣayastasmai pūjāṁ cakuryathāvidhi||
Beholding him, bow in hand, weary and hungry, the sages came up to him and offered him hospitality in the proper manner.
Verse 17 (skanda.5.144.17)
sa pūjāmṛṣibhirdattāṁ pratigṛhya yathāvidhi| apṛcchattāpasānsarvāṁstapaso vṛddhimuttamām||
Having duly accepted the honour offered by the sages, he inquired of all those ascetics about the excellent progress of their austerities.
Verse 18 (skanda.5.144.18)
te tasya rājño vacanaṁ pratigṛhya tapodhanāḥ| ṛṣayo rājaśārdūlaṁ papracchustatprayojanam||
Those ascetics, rich in austerity, having heard the king's words, asked that tiger among kings the reason for his coming.
Verse 19 (skanda.5.144.19)
kena bhadra sukhārthena saṁprāpto'si tapovanam| padātirbaddhanistriṁśo dhanvī bāṇī nareśvara||
"For what purpose, good sir, have you come to this hermitage — on foot, sword girded, bow and arrows in hand, O lord of men?
Verse 20 (skanda.5.144.20)
etadicchāmahe śrotuṁ kutaḥ prāpto'si mānada| kasminkule ca jātastvaṁ kiṁ nāmā brūhi pārthiva||
We wish to hear whence you have come, O honourable one. In what lineage were you born, and what is your name, O king? Tell us."
Verse 21 (skanda.5.144.21)
tataḥ sa rājā sarvebhyo dvijebhyaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ| ācakhyau tadyathānyāyaṁ kulaṁ gotraṁ ca tattvataḥ||
Then that king, foremost among men, related truly to all those brahmins, in due order, his family and his lineage.
Verse 22 (skanda.5.144.22)
ikṣvākūṇāṁ kule jāto vīraketurdvijarṣabhāḥ| carāmi mṛgayūthāni nighnanbāṇaiḥ sahasraśaḥ||
"I am Vireketu, born in the lineage of the Ikshvakus, O foremost of brahmins; I go about hunting herds of deer, felling them by the thousand with my arrows.
Verse 23 (skanda.5.144.23)
balena mahatā yuktaḥ sāmātyaḥ saparicchadaḥ| yadā na labdho gahane mṛgo vā sūkaro'pi vā||
"Attended by a great host, with ministers and retinue, when in that dense forest no deer or boar was to be found any longer,
Verse 24 (skanda.5.144.24)
mahiṣaścittalo vāpi śaśo vā śaṁbaro vane| tadā me karabho viddho bāṇenānataparvaṇā||
no buffalo, no spotted deer, no hare, no sambar — then, in that forest, I struck a camel with my well-jointed arrow.
Verse 25 (skanda.5.144.25)
sa praṇaṣṭaḥ kṣaṇenaiva sabāṇo mama paśyataḥ| taṁ dravaṁtamanuprāpto vanametadyadṛcchayā||
"He vanished in an instant, still bearing my arrow, right before my eyes. Pursuing him in his flight, I have arrived by chance at this forest,
Verse 26 (skanda.5.144.26)
bhavatsakāśaṁ naṣṭaśrīrhatāśaḥ śramakarśitaḥ| bhavatāṁ viditaṁ sarvaṁ sarvajñā hi tapodhanāḥ| bhavaṁtaḥ sumahābhāgāstasmātpṛcchāmi saṁśayam||
despoiled of my glory, disheartened, and worn out with exertion, I have come into your presence. You, rich in austerity, know all things, being omniscient; you are most fortunate — therefore I ask you to resolve my doubt.
Verse 27 (skanda.5.144.27)
kva gataḥ karabho viddho mayā bāṇena sāṁpratam| kva ca prāpsyāmi sahasā brūta tatsusamāhitāḥ||
Where has the camel gone, whom I just now wounded with my arrow? And where might I soon find him again? Tell me this, with your minds well composed."
Verse 28 (skanda.5.144.28)
tatasteṣāṁ samastānāmṛṣīṇāmṛṣisattamaḥ| ṛṣabho devi karabhaṁ smaranniddamathābravīt||
Then, O goddess, Rishabha, the most eminent among all those sages, recalling that camel, spoke thus.
Verse 29 (skanda.5.144.29)
gataḥ sa karabho bhūpa mahākālavane śubhe| gaccha tvaṁ ca mahārāja mahākālavane śubhe||
"That camel, O king, has gone to the auspicious Mahakalavana. Go there, O great king, to that same auspicious Mahakalavana.
Verse 30 (skanda.5.144.30)
yatra devo mahādevaḥ kārabhaṁ rūpamāsthitaḥ| vinodārthaṁ ca devānāṁ liṁgamūrttirabhūtpurā||
"There, the great god Mahadeva took the form of a camel, and long ago, for the delight of the gods, he became manifest as a linga-image."
Verse 31 (skanda.5.144.31)
paścime kṣetrapālasya kailāsasya mahīpate| samīpe tasya vighneśo modakapriyasaṁjñakaḥ||
West of the field-guardian Kailasha, O king, near him, dwells Vighnesha known as Modakapriya, the lover of sweetmeats.
Verse 32 (skanda.5.144.32)
brahmaṇā pūjito rājandevānāmarthasiddhaye| sa ca dharmadhvajo rājā haihayānāṁ kulodvahaḥ||
He was worshipped by Brahma for the accomplishment of the gods' purposes, O king. Now there was a king named Dharmadhvaja, upholder of the Haihaya lineage.
Verse 33 (skanda.5.144.33)
turageṇa kadācittu nīto badarikāśramam| prasiddhaṁ triṣu lokeṣu naranārāyaṇāśramam||
Once, borne by his horse, he was carried to Badarikashrama, renowned throughout the three worlds as the hermitage of Nara and Narayana.
Verse 34 (skanda.5.144.34)
tatra vīrājinadharaṁ kṛśaṁ vipraṁ dadarśa ha| śarīramapi rājeṁdra na kenāpi samaṁ tadā| dṛṣṭvā ca hasito viprastena rājñā pramādataḥ||
There he saw a brahmin, emaciated, clad in a deer-skin — his body, O king, unlike any other. Seeing him, that king, in his carelessness, laughed at the brahmin.
Verse 35 (skanda.5.144.35)
yasmāddhasasi māṁ dṛṣṭvā tasmāduṣṭro bhaviṣyasi| laṁboṣṭho laṁbadaṁtaśca visvaro vikṛtākṛtiḥ||
"Since you laugh at the sight of me, you shall become a camel — with hanging lips, protruding teeth, a discordant bray, and a misshapen form."
Verse 36 (skanda.5.144.36)
ityuktastena vipreṇa śaptopi nṛpasattamaḥ| taṁ vipraṁ prārthayāmāsa sa ca tuṣṭo'bravīdidam||
Thus addressed and cursed by that brahmin, that eminent king pleaded with him; and the brahmin, pleased, then spoke as follows.
Verse 37 (skanda.5.144.37)
na me vāganṛtā bhūpa kadācidapi vidyate| avaśyaṁ karabho bhūtvā paścānmuktimavāpsyasi||
"My word is never untrue, O king. You shall indeed become a camel, but afterward you shall attain liberation."
Verse 38 (skanda.5.144.38)
yadā tvaṁ karabho jāto viddho vai vīraketunā| ayodhyādhipabhūpena gamiṣyasi śarāhataḥ||
"When, having become a camel, you are struck by the arrow of King Vireketu, lord of Ayodhya, wounded, you shall then go —
Verse 39 (skanda.5.144.39)
mahākālavanaṁ divyaṁ tatra tvaṁ liṁgadarśanāt| gamiṣyasi paraṁ sthānaṁ yatra devo maheśvaraḥ||
to the divine Mahakalavana, and there, by the sight of the linga, you shall attain that supreme abode where the great lord Maheshvara dwells.
Verse 40 (skanda.5.144.40)
sa cekṣvākukuladbhūto vīraketurmahābalaḥ| liṁgadarśanato bhūpa cakravartitvamāpsyati||
And that mighty Vireketu, born of the Ikshvaku lineage, O king, shall by the sight of that linga attain the rank of a universal emperor."
Verse 41 (skanda.5.144.41)
ityukto nṛpa bhūpālaḥ karabhatvaṁ samāgataḥ| sa tvayābhihato bhūpa bāṇenānataparvaṇā| drakṣyasi tvaṁ vimānasthaṁ vimuktaṁ liṁgadarśanāt||
"Thus told, that king came to the state of a camel; and, O king, he was struck by your own well-jointed arrow. Now you shall behold him, seated in a celestial chariot, freed through the sight of the linga."
Verse 42 (skanda.5.144.42)
ityukto nṛpatistena ṛṣabheṇa dvijena tu| ājagāma tvarāyukto mahākālavanaṁ śubham||
Thus told by the brahmin Rishabha, the king went in haste to the auspicious Mahakalavana.
Verse 43 (skanda.5.144.43)
dadarśa tatra tallliṁgaṁ pūjitaṁ tridaśaiḥ sadā| etasminnaṁtare vāṇī śrutā tena mahībhṛtā||
There he beheld that linga, ever worshipped by the gods. Meanwhile that king heard a voice.
Verse 44 (skanda.5.144.44)
vimānasthena yā proktā tūṣṭreṇa madhurasvarā| bhobho rājeṁdra māṁ paśya vimāne coddhṛte śubhe||
That sweet-voiced call, spoken by the one who, once the camel, now sat in a celestial car, said: "O king of kings, behold me here in this glorious, uplifted chariot!
Verse 45 (skanda.5.144.45)
darśanādasya liṁgasya prāptā me paramā gatiḥ| tvayā hato'haṁ bāṇena tenāhaṁ tvāgato vane| samīpamasya liṁgasya tvaṁ me baṁdhuḥ paro yataḥ||
By the sight of this linga I have attained the supreme state. Struck by your very arrow, I came to this forest, to the presence of this linga; therefore you are my truest kinsman."
Verse 46 (skanda.5.144.46)
ityuktvā sa nṛpaṁ devi vacaḥ samadhurākṣaram| gatastu paramaṁ sthānaṁ nityamavyayamakṣayam||
Having spoken these sweet words to the king, O goddess, he departed to that supreme, eternal, imperishable, undecaying abode.
Verse 47 (skanda.5.144.47)
tato devagaṇā vyomni sakiṁnaramahoragāḥ| yakṣarākṣasagaṁdharvāḥ sapiśācāpsarogaṇāḥ||
Then, in the sky, hosts of gods with kinnaras and great serpents, yakshas, rakshasas, gandharvas, together with pishachas and troops of apsaras,
Verse 48 (skanda.5.144.48)
brahmeṁdraharimukhyāśca vimānairdevi saṁsthitāḥ| ājagmurmuditāstatra draṣṭuṁ kautukamānasāḥ||
led by Brahma, Indra, and Hari, all mounted on their celestial cars, O goddess, arrived there gladly, their minds eager with curiosity to witness the sight.
Verse 49 (skanda.5.144.49)
vilokya karabhaṁ muktaṁ vimānasthaṁ virājitam| liṁgadarśanamātreṇa saṁstutaṁ vividhaiḥ stavaiḥ||
Beholding the liberated camel, resplendent, seated in his celestial chariot, praised with manifold hymns merely for having beheld the linga,
Verse 50 (skanda.5.144.50)
acchratnasamūhena mukuṭenojvalatviṣā| bhāsaṁtaṁ ravikoṭīnāṁ jagadānaṁdakārakam||
radiant with a crown of flawless jewels, shining like a myriad suns, bringing joy to the whole world —
Verse 51 (skanda.5.144.51)
nāma cakrustato devā dṛṣṭvā māhātmyamuttamam| darśanādasya liṁgasya mukto'yaṁ karabho yataḥ||
the gods, seeing this excellent greatness, gave it a name — since it was by the sight of this linga that this camel attained liberation,
Verse 52 (skanda.5.144.52)
tasmāttriṣvapi lokeṣu vikhyātaḥ karabheśvaraḥ| bhaviṣyati na saṁdehaḥ paśuyonivimocakaḥ||
therefore it shall become renowned in all three worlds as Karabheshvara, the liberator from animal births, beyond all doubt.
Verse 53 (skanda.5.144.53)
ityuktvā tridaśāḥ sarve gatāḥ svaṁ dhiṣṇyamuttamam| ayodhyādhipatirvīro vīraketuḥ svamālayam| samṛddhaṁ niḥsapatnaṁ ca tato rājyaṁ cakāra saḥ||
Having said this, all the gods went to their own excellent abodes; and the heroic Vireketu, lord of Ayodhya, returned to his own home and thereafter ruled a prosperous, unrivalled kingdom.
Verse 54 (skanda.5.144.54)
yaḥ paśyati naro devi karabheśvarasaṁjñakam| sa prayātyakṣayāṁllokānpūjyamāno gaṇādhipaḥ||
O goddess, whatever man beholds this god called Karabheshvara attains imperishable worlds, honoured as a lord of the ganas.
Verse 55 (skanda.5.144.55)
yadā kālādihāyāto rājarājeśvaro mahān| pṛthivyāmekarāḍbhūtvā kramānmokṣamavāpnuyāt||
When, in due time, he comes here again, he becomes a mighty overlord of kings, a sole sovereign upon the earth, and thereafter attains liberation in due course.
Verse 56 (skanda.5.144.56)
na duḥkhaṁ jāyate tasya vyādhiśokabhayaṁ tathā| ye paśyaṁti prasaṁgena talliṁgaṁ karabheśvaram||
Those who, even by chance, behold that linga Karabheshvara never experience suffering, disease, grief, or fear.
Verse 57 (skanda.5.144.57)
sarvamedheṣu yatpuṇyaṁ sarvadāneṣu yatphalam| tatphalaṁ tvadhikaṁ devi karabheśvaradarśanāt||
Whatever merit accrues from every sacrifice, whatever fruit from every gift — that fruit, O goddess, is exceeded by the sight of Karabheshvara.
Verse 58 (skanda.5.144.58)
vyādhayo nopajāyaṁte dāridryaṁ na kadācana| aiśvaryaṁ cātulaṁ teṣāṁ jāyate darśanātsadā||
Neither diseases nor poverty ever befall them; through this sight, unrivalled prosperity ever arises for them.
Verse 59 (skanda.5.144.59)
paśuyonigatā ye ca pitaro duḥkhitāstu ye| tiṣṭhaṁti cāṁbare te tu ciṁtayaṁtaḥ svagotrajam||
Those ancestors who, fallen into animal births, suffer in distress, remain aloft in the sky, thinking anxiously of their own lineage's offspring:
Verse 60 (skanda.5.144.60)
āgamiṣyati naḥ putro naptā vā saṁtatāviha| kadā paśyati deveśaṁ karabheśvaramīśvaram| tena darśanamātreṇa muktirno bhavitā dhruvam||
"When shall our son or grandson, continuing our line, come here? When shall he behold the lord of gods, the divine Karabheshvara? By that mere sight our liberation shall surely come."
Verse 61 (skanda.5.144.61)
yo yamuddiśya vai kāmaṁ darśanaṁ tu kariṣyati| tasya tajjāyate sarvaṁ mṛtasya paramā gatiḥ||
Whoever undertakes this sight with a particular wish in mind, all that he desires is fulfilled, and upon death he attains the supreme state.
Verse 62 (skanda.5.144.62)
eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| karabheśasya devasya śṛṇu rājasthaleśvaram||
Thus, O goddess, I have told you the sin-destroying greatness of the god Karabhesha; now hear of Rajasthaleshvara.
