The Glory of Agastyeshvara Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.219.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। ततो गच्छेत्तु राजेन्द्र तीर्थं परमशोभनम्। नराणां पापनाशाय अगस्त्येश्वरमुत्तमम्॥

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchettu rājendra tīrthaṁ paramaśobhanam| narāṇāṁ pāpanāśāya agastyeśvaramuttamam||

Shri Markandeya said: "O lord of kings, thereafter, for the destruction of men's sins, one should go to the most beautiful and excellent tirtha of Agastyeshvara.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.219.2)

तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्मुच्यते ब्रह्महत्यया। कार्त्तिकस्य तु मासस्य कृष्णपक्षे चतुर्दशी॥

tatra snātvā naro rājanmucyate brahmahatyayā| kārttikasya tu māsasya kṛṣṇapakṣe caturdaśī||

O king, bathing there, a man is freed even from the sin of brahmin-slaying. On the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of the month of Karttika,

Verse 3 (skanda.5.219.3)

घृतेन स्नापयेद्देवं समाधिस्थो जितेन्द्रियः। एकविंशतिकुलोपेतो च्यवेदैश्वरात्पदात्॥

ghṛtena snāpayeddevaṁ samādhistho jitendriyaḥ| ekaviṁśatikulopeto cyavedaiśvarātpadāt||

one should bathe the God with ghee, being composed in meditation and self-controlled; by this, together with twenty-one generations of his lineage, he does not fall away from that exalted state.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.219.4)

धनं चोपानहौ छत्रं दद्याच्च घृतकम्बलम्। भोजनं चैव सर्वेषां सर्वं कोटिगुणं भवेत्॥

dhanaṁ copānahau chatraṁ dadyācca ghṛtakambalam| bhojanaṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ sarvaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ bhavet||

One should give wealth, sandals, an umbrella, and a blanket soaked in ghee, and food for all as well — everything given there becomes a crorefold in merit."
