The Glory of Anandeshvara Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.220.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। ततो गच्छेत्तु राजेन्द्र आनन्देश्वरमुत्तमम्। तत्तीर्थं कथयिष्यामि सर्वपापक्षयंकरम्॥

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchettu rājendra ānandeśvaramuttamam| tattīrthaṁ kathayiṣyāmi sarvapāpakṣayaṁkaram||

Shri Markandeya said: "O lord of kings, thereafter one should go to the excellent Anandeshvara; I shall tell of that tirtha, destroyer of all sin.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.220.2)

युधिष्ठिर उवाच। आनन्दश्चैव संजातो रुद्रस्य द्विजसत्तम। कथ्यतां मे च तत्सर्वं संक्षेपात्सह बान्धवैः॥

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca| ānandaścaiva saṁjāto rudrasya dvijasattama| kathyatāṁ me ca tatsarvaṁ saṁkṣepātsaha bāndhavaiḥ||

Yudhishthira said: "O best of the twice-born, how did Ananda (joy) arise for Rudra? Tell me all of that briefly, together with its related matters."

Verse 3 (skanda.5.220.3)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। कथयामि नृपश्रेष्ठ आनन्देश्वरमुत्तमम्। दानवानां वधं कृत्वा देवदेवो महेश्वरः॥

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| kathayāmi nṛpaśreṣṭha ānandeśvaramuttamam| dānavānāṁ vadhaṁ kṛtvā devadevo maheśvaraḥ||

Shri Markandeya said: "O best of kings, I shall tell of the excellent Anandeshvara. Having slain the Danavas, the God of gods, Maheshvara,

Verse 4 (skanda.5.220.4)

पूजितो दैवतैः सर्वैः किन्नरैर्यक्षपन्नगैः। आनन्दसंयुतो देवो ननर्त वृषवाहनः॥

pūjito daivataiḥ sarvaiḥ kinnarairyakṣapannagaiḥ| ānandasaṁyuto devo nanarta vṛṣavāhanaḥ||

was worshipped by all the divinities, by kinnaras, yakshas, and serpents; filled with joy, the bull-mounted God began to dance.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.220.5)

भैरवं रूपमास्थाय गौर्या चार्द्धाङ्गसंस्थितः। भूतवेतालकङ्कालैर्भैरवैर्भैरवो वृतः॥

bhairavaṁ rūpamāsthāya gauryā cārddhāṅgasaṁsthitaḥ| bhūtavetālakaṅkālairbhairavairbhairavo vṛtaḥ||

Taking on the form of Bhairava, with Gauri established as his half-body, and surrounded by bhutas, vetalas, skeletons, and bhairavas,

Verse 6 (skanda.5.220.6)

ननर्त नर्मदातीरे दक्षिणे पाण्डुनन्दन। तुष्टैर्मरुद्गणैः सर्वैः स्थापितः कमलासनः॥

nanarta narmadātīre dakṣiṇe pāṇḍunandana| tuṣṭairmarudgaṇaiḥ sarvaiḥ sthāpitaḥ kamalāsanaḥ||

Bhairava, O joy of Pandu, danced on the southern bank of the Narmada; pleased, all the hosts of Maruts, and the lotus-seated one as well, were established there.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.220.7)

तदाप्रभृति तत्तीर्थमानन्देश्वरमुच्यते। अष्टम्यां च चतुर्दश्यां पौर्णमास्यां नराधिप॥

tadāprabhṛti tattīrthamānandeśvaramucyate| aṣṭamyāṁ ca caturdaśyāṁ paurṇamāsyāṁ narādhipa||

From that time this tirtha is called Anandeshvara. O lord of men, on the eighth, the fourteenth, and the full-moon day,

Verse 8 (skanda.5.220.8)

विधिवच्चार्चयेद्देवं सुगन्धेन विलेपयेत्। ब्राह्मणान्पूजयेत्तत्र यथाशक्त्या युधिष्ठिर॥

vidhivaccārcayeddevaṁ sugandhena vilepayet| brāhmaṇānpūjayettatra yathāśaktyā yudhiṣṭhira||

one should worship the God duly, anoint him with fragrant substances; O Yudhishthira, one should honour brahmins there according to one's ability.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.220.9)

गोदानं तत्र कर्तव्यं वस्त्रदानं शुभावहम्। वसन्तस्य त्रयोदश्यां श्राद्धं तत्रैव कारयेत्॥

godānaṁ tatra kartavyaṁ vastradānaṁ śubhāvaham| vasantasya trayodaśyāṁ śrāddhaṁ tatraiva kārayet||

A gift of a cow should be made there, and an auspicious gift of clothing as well; on the thirteenth day of spring, one should have the shraddha performed there.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.220.10)

इङ्गुदैर्बदरैर्बिल्वैरक्षतैश्च जलेन वा। प्रेतानां कारयेच्छ्राद्धमानन्देश्वर उत्तमे॥

iṅgudairbadarairbilvairakṣataiśca jalena vā| pretānāṁ kārayecchrāddhamānandeśvara uttame||

With ingudi, jujube, bilva fruits, and unbroken rice, or with water, one should have the shraddha of the departed performed at excellent Anandeshvara.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.220.11)

आनन्दिता भवेयुस्ते यावदाभूतसम्प्लवम्। सन्ततेर्वै न विच्छेदः सप्तजन्मसु जायते। आनन्दो हि भवत्तेषां प्रतिजन्मनि भारत॥

ānanditā bhaveyuste yāvadābhūtasamplavam| santatervai na vicchedaḥ saptajanmasu jāyate| ānando hi bhavatteṣāṁ pratijanmani bhārata||

Those ancestors would remain joyful until the dissolution of the elements; there is no break in the lineage for seven births; indeed, O Bharata, joy alone comes to them in every birth."
