The Glory of Dhanada Tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.5.223.1)
श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। धनदस्य तु तत्तीर्थं ततो गच्छेद्युधिष्ठिर। नर्मदादक्षिणे कूले सर्वपापक्षयंकरम्॥
śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| dhanadasya tu tattīrthaṁ tato gacchedyudhiṣṭhira| narmadādakṣiṇe kūle sarvapāpakṣayaṁkaram||
Shri Markandeya said: "O Yudhishthira, thereafter one should go to the tirtha of Dhanada, on the southern bank of the Narmada, destroyer of all sin.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.223.2)
सर्वतीर्थफलं तत्र प्राप्यते नात्र संशयः। चैत्रमासत्रयोदश्यां शुक्लपक्षे जितेन्द्रियः॥
sarvatīrthaphalaṁ tatra prāpyate nātra saṁśayaḥ| caitramāsatrayodaśyāṁ śuklapakṣe jitendriyaḥ||
There, the fruit of all tirthas is obtained — there is no doubt of it. On the thirteenth of the month of Chaitra, in the bright fortnight, self-controlled,
Verse 3 (skanda.5.223.3)
उपोष्य परया भक्त्या रात्रौ कुर्वीत जागरम्। पञ्चामृतेन राजेन्द्र स्नापयेद्धनदं बुधः॥
upoṣya parayā bhaktyā rātrau kurvīta jāgaram| pañcāmṛtena rājendra snāpayeddhanadaṁ budhaḥ||
having fasted with the highest devotion, one should keep vigil at night; O lord of kings, the wise man should bathe Dhanada with the five nectars.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.223.4)
दीपं घृतेन दातव्यं गीतं वाद्यं च कारयेत्। प्रभाते पूजयेद्विप्रानात्मनः श्रेय इच्छति॥
dīpaṁ ghṛtena dātavyaṁ gītaṁ vādyaṁ ca kārayet| prabhāte pūjayedviprānātmanaḥ śreya icchati||
A lamp fed with ghee should be offered, and singing and music performed; in the morning, one desiring one's own welfare should worship brahmins —
Verse 5 (skanda.5.223.5)
प्रतिग्रहसमर्थांश्च विद्यासिद्धान्तवादिनः। श्रौतस्मार्तक्रियायुक्तान् परदारपराङ्मुखान्॥
pratigrahasamarthāṁśca vidyāsiddhāntavādinaḥ| śrautasmārtakriyāyuktān paradāraparāṅmukhān||
those fit to accept gifts, expounders of the doctrines of learning, devoted to the rites of shruti and smriti, and averse to another's wife.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.223.6)
पूजयेद्गोहिरण्येन वस्त्रोपानहभोजनैः। छत्रशय्याप्रदानेन सर्वपापक्षयो भवेत्॥
pūjayedgohiraṇyena vastropānahabhojanaiḥ| chatraśayyāpradānena sarvapāpakṣayo bhavet||
One should honour them with cows and gold, with clothing, sandals, and food; by the gift of an umbrella and a bed, the destruction of all sin comes about.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.223.7)
त्रिजन्मजनितं पापं वरदस्य प्रभावतः। स्वर्गदं दुर्विनीतानां विनीतानां च मोक्षदम्॥
trijanmajanitaṁ pāpaṁ varadasya prabhāvataḥ| svargadaṁ durvinītānāṁ vinītānāṁ ca mokṣadam||
By the power of the boon-giver Dhanada, sin accumulated over three births is destroyed; it grants heaven to the ill-disciplined, and grants liberation to the disciplined.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.223.8)
अन्नदं च दरिद्राणां भवेज्जन्मनिजन्मनि। कुलीनत्वं दुःखहानिः स्वभावाजायते नरे॥
annadaṁ ca daridrāṇāṁ bhavejjanmanijanmani| kulīnatvaṁ duḥkhahāniḥ svabhāvājāyate nare||
It becomes a giver of food to the poor, birth after birth; nobility of birth and the removal of sorrow arise naturally in a man.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.223.9)
व्याधिध्वंसो भवेत्तेषां नर्मदोदकसेवनात्। धनदस्य तु यस्तीर्थे विद्यादानं प्रयच्छति॥
vyādhidhvaṁso bhavetteṣāṁ narmadodakasevanāt| dhanadasya tu yastīrthe vidyādānaṁ prayacchati||
The destruction of disease comes to them from partaking of the water of the Narmada. Whoever gives the gift of learning at the tirtha of Dhanada,
Verse 10 (skanda.5.223.10)
स याति भास्करे लोके सर्वव्याधिविवर्जिते। देवद्रोणीं च तत्रैव स्वशक्त्या पाण्डुनन्दन॥
sa yāti bhāskare loke sarvavyādhivivarjite| devadroṇīṁ ca tatraiva svaśaktyā pāṇḍunandana||
goes to the world of the Sun, free from every disease. O joy of Pandu, and whoever, according to his ability, has a devadroni built there itself,
Verse 11 (skanda.5.223.11)
ये प्रकुर्वन्ति भूयिष्ठां रेवाया दक्षिणे तटे। ते यान्ति शांकरे लोके सर्वदुःखविवर्जिते॥
ye prakurvanti bhūyiṣṭhāṁ revāyā dakṣiṇe taṭe| te yānti śāṁkare loke sarvaduḥkhavivarjite||
and whoever performs abundant works of merit on the southern bank of the Reva — they go to the world of Shankara, free from all sorrow."
