Chapter 240All chaptersChapter 242

Verse 1 (skanda.5.241.1)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - tato gacchenmahārāja piṅgalāvartamuttamam| saṅgamasya samīpasthaṁ revāyā uttare taṭe| havyavāhena rājendra sthāpitaḥ piṅgaleśvaraḥ

Shri Markandeya said: "Then, O great king, one should go to the excellent Pingalavarta, situated near the confluence, on the northern bank of the Reva, O Rajendra, where Pingaleshvara was established by Havyavaha, the Fire."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.241.2)

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca - havyavāhena bhagavannīśvaraḥ sthāpitaḥ katham| etadākhyāhi me sarvaṁ prasādādvaktumarhasi

Yudhishthira said: "O venerable one, how did Havyavaha establish Ishvara? Tell me all this out of your grace; you should speak of it."

Verse 3 (skanda.5.241.3)

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca - śambhunā retasā rājaṁstarpito havyavāhanaḥ| prāptasaukhyena raudreṇa gauryākrīḍanacetasā

Markandeya said: "O king, Havyavahana was made to drink the seed of Shambhu — of Rudra, who had found bliss and whose mind was set upon sporting with Gauri."

Verse 4 (skanda.5.241.4)

havyavāhamukhe kṣiptaṁ rudreṇāmitatejasā| rudrasya retasā dagdhastīrthayātrākṛtādaraḥ

It was cast into the mouth of Havyavaha by Rudra of measureless splendor; burnt by Rudra's seed, he became devoted to the pilgrimage of sacred fords.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.241.5)

sāgarāṁśca nadīrgatvā kramādrevāṁ samāgataḥ| cacāra parayā bhaktyā dhyānamugraṁ hutāśanaḥ

Having gone to the oceans and rivers, he gradually arrived at the Reva; Hutashana, the Fire, practiced fierce meditation with supreme devotion.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.241.6)

vāyubhakṣaḥ śataṁ sāgraṁ yāvattepe hutāśanaḥ| tāvattuṣṭo mahādevo varado jātavedasaḥ| saṁnidhau samupetyātha vacanaṁ cedamabravīt

Feeding on air alone, Hutashana practiced austerity for a little more than a hundred years; then Mahadeva, the boon-giver, pleased, drew near Jatavedas and spoke these words.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.241.7)

īśvara uvāca - varaṁ vṛṇīṣva havyāśa yaste manasi vartate

Ishvara said: "Choose a boon, O eater of oblations, whatever is in your mind."

Verse 8 (skanda.5.241.8)

vahniruvāca - namaste sarvalokeśa ugramūrte namo'stu te| retasā tava saṁdagdhaḥ kuṣṭhī jāto maheśvara| kṛpāṁ kuru mahādeva mama rogaṁ vināśaya

Vahni said: "Salutations to you, Lord of all worlds; salutations to you of fierce form. Burnt by your seed I have become a leper, O Maheshvara. Have mercy, O Mahadeva; destroy my disease."

Verse 9 (skanda.5.241.9)

īśvara uvāca - havyavāha bhavārogo matprasādācca satvaram| atra tīrthe kṛtasnānaḥ svarūpaṁ pratipatsyase

Ishvara said: "O Havyavaha, be free of disease swiftly by my grace; having bathed at this ford, you shall regain your own form."

Verse 10 (skanda.5.241.10)

ityuktvā ca mahādevastatraivāntaradhīyata| anantaraṁ havyavāhaḥ sasnau revājale tvaran

Having said this, Mahadeva vanished on the spot; thereafter Havyavaha swiftly bathed in the waters of the Reva.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.241.11)

tadaiva roganirmukto'bhavaddivyasvarūpavān| sthāpayāmāsa deveśaṁ sa vahniḥ piṅgaleśvaram

At that very moment he became free of disease and possessed of a divine form; that Vahni established the Lord of gods there as Pingaleshvara.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.241.12)

nāmnā saṁpūjayāmāsa tuṣṭāva stutibhirmudā| tato jagāma deśaṁ svaṁ devānāṁ havyavāhanaḥ

He worshipped him by name and joyfully pleased him with hymns of praise; then Havyavahana, carrier of the gods' oblations, departed to his own realm.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.241.13)

havyavāhena bhūpaivaṁ sthāpitaḥ piṅgaleśvaraḥ| jitakrodho hi yastatra upavāsaṁ samācaret

Thus, O king, Pingaleshvara was established by Havyavaha. Whoever, with anger conquered, observes a fast there —

Verse 14 (skanda.5.241.14)

atirāntraphalaṁ tasya ante rudratvamāpnuyāt| guṇānvitāya viprāya kapilāṁ tatra bhārata

obtains the fruit of the Atiratra rite, and in the end attains the state of a Rudra. And, O Bharata, whoever there gives to a virtuous brahmin a tawny cow —

Verse 15 (skanda.5.241.15)

alaṁkṛtya savatsāṁ ca śaktyālaṅkārabhūṣitām| yaḥ prayacchati rājendra sa gacchetparamāṁ gatim

adorned, together with her calf, decorated with ornaments to the best of his ability, O Rajendra — he attains the supreme state.
