The Greatness of Rinamochana (Release from the Three Debts)

Verse 1 (skanda.5.242.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच - ततो गच्छेन्महीपाल तीर्थं परमशोभनम्। स्थापितं मुनिसङ्घैर्यद्ब्रह्मवंशसमुद्भवैः

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - tato gacchenmahīpāla tīrthaṁ paramaśobhanam| sthāpitaṁ munisaṅghairyadbrahmavaṁśasamudbhavaiḥ

Shri Markandeya said: "Then, O king, one should go to a most beautiful ford, established by hosts of sages born of the lineage of Brahma."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.242.2)

ऋणमोचनमित्याख्यं रेवातटसमाश्रितम्। षण्मासं मनुजो भक्त्या तर्पयन् पितृदेवताः

ṛṇamocanamityākhyaṁ revātaṭasamāśritam| ṣaṇmāsaṁ manujo bhaktyā tarpayan pitṛdevatāḥ

Known by the name Rinamochana, "Debt-Releasing," it lies on the bank of the Reva. Whatever man, for six months, with devotion offers tarpana to the ancestors and gods there,

Verse 3 (skanda.5.242.3)

देवैः पितृमनुष्यैश्च ऋणमात्मकृतं च यत्। मुच्यते तत्क्षणान्मर्त्यः स्नातो वै नर्मदाजले

devaiḥ pitṛmanuṣyaiśca ṛṇamātmakṛtaṁ ca yat| mucyate tatkṣaṇānmartyaḥ snāto vai narmadājale

is released at that very instant from the debt owed to gods, ancestors, and men, and from the debt of his own making, that mortal, by bathing in the waters of the Narmada.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.242.4)

प्रत्यक्षं दुरितं तत्र दृश्यते फलरूपतः। तत्र तीर्थे तु यो राजन्नेकचित्तो जितेन्द्रियः

pratyakṣaṁ duritaṁ tatra dṛśyate phalarūpataḥ| tatra tīrthe tu yo rājannekacitto jitendriyaḥ

There, sin is seen directly, in the very form of its consequence. And, O king, whoever at that ford, with a single-pointed mind and conquered senses —

Verse 5 (skanda.5.242.5)

स्नात्वा दानं च वै दद्यादर्चयेद्गिरिजापतिम्। ऋणत्रयविनिर्मुक्तो नाके दीप्यति देववत्

snātvā dānaṁ ca vai dadyādarcayedgirijāpatim| ṛṇatrayavinirmukto nāke dīpyati devavat

bathes, gives gifts, and worships the Lord of Girija — released from the three debts, he shines in heaven like a god.
