The Greatness of Kapileshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.5.243.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच - तस्यैवानन्तरं पार्थ कापिलं तीर्थमाश्रयेत्। स्थापितं कपिलेनैव सर्वपातकनाशनम्

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - tasyaivānantaraṁ pārtha kāpilaṁ tīrthamāśrayet| sthāpitaṁ kapilenaiva sarvapātakanāśanam

Shri Markandeya said: "Right after that, O Partha, one should resort to the Kapila ford, established by the sage Kapila himself, the destroyer of all sins."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.243.2)

अष्टम्यां च सिते पक्षे चतुर्दश्यां नरेश्वर। स्नापयेत्परया भक्त्या कपिलाक्षीरसर्पिषा

aṣṭamyāṁ ca site pakṣe caturdaśyāṁ nareśvara| snāpayetparayā bhaktyā kapilākṣīrasarpiṣā

On the eighth day of the bright fortnight, and on the fourteenth, O lord of men, one should bathe the Lord with supreme devotion in the milk and ghee of a tawny cow.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.243.3)

श्रीखण्डेन सुगन्धेन गुण्ठयेत महेश्वरम्। ततः सुगन्धपुष्पैश्च श्वेतैश्च नृपसत्तम

śrīkhaṇḍena sugandhena guṇṭhayeta maheśvaram| tataḥ sugandhapuṣpaiśca śvetaiśca nṛpasattama

One should anoint Maheshvara with fragrant sandal-paste; then, O best of kings, with fragrant white flowers,

Verse 4 (skanda.5.243.4)

येऽर्चयन्ति जितक्रोधा न ते यान्ति यमालयम्। असिपत्त्रवनं घोरं यमचुल्ही सुदारुणा

ye'rcayanti jitakrodhā na te yānti yamālayam| asipattravanaṁ ghoraṁ yamaculhī sudāruṇā

worship him. Those who worship, with anger conquered, do not go to the abode of Yama — not to the dreadful forest of sword-leaves, nor the terrible cauldron of Yama.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.243.5)

दृश्यते नैव विद्वद्भिः कपिलेश्वरपूजनात्। स्नात्वा रेवाजले पुण्ये भोजयेद्ब्राह्मणाञ्छुभान्

dṛśyate naiva vidvadbhiḥ kapileśvarapūjanāt| snātvā revājale puṇye bhojayedbrāhmaṇāñchubhān

These are never seen by the wise, on account of worshipping Kapileshvara. Having bathed in the sacred waters of the Reva, one should feed auspicious brahmins,

Verse 6 (skanda.5.243.6)

गोप्रदानेन वस्त्रेण तिलदानेन भारत। छत्रशय्याप्रदानेन राजा भवति धार्मिकः

gopradānena vastreṇa tiladānena bhārata| chatraśayyāpradānena rājā bhavati dhārmikaḥ

and, O Bharata, by the gift of a cow, of cloth, by the gift of sesame, and by the gift of an umbrella and a bed, a king becomes righteous.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.243.7)

तीव्रतेजा विघोरश्च जीवत्पुत्रः प्रियंवदः। शत्रुवर्गो न तस्य स्यात्कदाचित्पाण्डुनन्दन

tīvratejā vighoraśca jīvatputraḥ priyaṁvadaḥ| śatruvargo na tasya syātkadācitpāṇḍunandana

He becomes of fierce splendor and formidable power, his sons live long and speak sweetly; O son of Pandu, he never has a host of enemies.
