The Greatness of Putikeshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.5.244.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच - ततो गच्छेत्तु राजेन्द्र पूतिकेश्वरमुत्तमम्। नर्मदादक्षिणे कूले सर्वपापक्षयंकरम्

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - tato gacchettu rājendra pūtikeśvaramuttamam| narmadādakṣiṇe kūle sarvapāpakṣayaṁkaram

Shri Markandeya said: "Then, O Rajendra, one should go to the excellent Putikeshvara, on the southern bank of the Narmada, destroyer of all sins."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.244.2)

स्थापितं जाम्बुवन्तेन लोकानां तु हितार्थिना। राजा प्रसेनजिन्नाम तस्यां वक्षस्थलान्मणौ

sthāpitaṁ jāmbuvantena lokānāṁ tu hitārthinā| rājā prasenajinnāma tasyāṁ vakṣasthalānmaṇau

It was established by Jambavat, who desired the welfare of the worlds. There was a king named Prasenajit — from the jewel upon his chest,

Verse 3 (skanda.5.244.3)

समुत्क्षिप्ते तु तेनैव सपूतिरभवद्व्रणः। तत्र तीर्थे तपस्तप्त्वा निर्व्रणः समजायत

samutkṣipte tu tenaiva sapūtirabhavadvraṇaḥ| tatra tīrthe tapastaptvā nirvraṇaḥ samajāyata

when it was seized by him, a foul, festering wound arose upon him; having performed austerity at that ford, he became free of the wound.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.244.4)

तेन तत्स्थापितं लिङ्गं पूतिकेश्वरमुत्तमम्। यस्तत्र मनुजो भक्त्या स्नायाद्भरतसत्तम

tena tatsthāpitaṁ liṅgaṁ pūtikeśvaramuttamam| yastatra manujo bhaktyā snāyādbharatasattama

By him was established there the excellent linga, Putikeshvara. O best of the Bharatas, whatever man bathes there with devotion,

Verse 5 (skanda.5.244.5)

सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति सम्पूज्य परमेश्वरम्। कृष्णाष्टम्यां चतुर्दश्यां सर्वकालं नराधिप। येऽर्चयन्ति सदा देवं ते न यान्ति यमालयम्

sarvānkāmānavāpnoti sampūjya parameśvaram| kṛṣṇāṣṭamyāṁ caturdaśyāṁ sarvakālaṁ narādhipa| ye'rcayanti sadā devaṁ te na yānti yamālayam

obtains all desires, having worshipped Parameshvara. On the eighth of the dark fortnight, on the fourteenth, at all times, O lord of men — those who ever worship the god do not go to the abode of Yama.
