Avanti Khanda · Chapter 245

The Greatness of Jalashayi (Chakra-tirtha)

Chapter 244All chaptersChapter 246

Verse 1 (skanda.5.245.1)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - revāyā uttare kūle vaiṣṇavaṁ tīrthamuttamam| jalaśāyīti vai nāma vikhyātaṁ vasudhātale

Shri Markandeya said: "On the northern bank of the Reva there is an excellent Vaishnava ford, known by the name Jalashayi, the one who lies in the water, renowned upon the earth."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.245.2)

dānavānāṁ vadhaṁ kṛtvā suptastatra janārdanaḥ| cakraṁ prakṣālitaṁ tatra devadevena cakriṇā| sudarśanaṁ ca niṣpāpaṁ revājalasamāśrayāt

Having slain the demons, Janardana lay down to sleep there; there the discus-bearing God of gods washed his discus, and Sudarshana became free of sin by resorting to the waters of the Reva.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.245.3)

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca - cakratīrthaṁ samācakṣva munisaṁghaiśca vanditam| viṣṇoḥ prabhāvamatulaṁ revāyāścaiva yatphalam

Yudhishthira said: "Tell me of Chakra-tirtha, honored by hosts of sages, of the matchless glory of Vishnu, and of that fruit belonging to the Reva."

Verse 4 (skanda.5.245.4)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - sādhu sādhu mahāprājña viraktastvaṁ yudhiṣṭhira| guhyādguhyataraṁ tīrthaṁ nirmitaṁ cakriṇā svayam

Shri Markandeya said: "Well said, well said, O greatly wise Yudhishthira, truly you are detached; this ford, more secret than the secret, was made by the discus-bearer himself."

Verse 5 (skanda.5.245.5)

tatte'haṁ sampravakṣyāmi kathāṁ pāpapraṇāśinīm| āsītpurā mahādaityastālamegha iti śrutaḥ

I shall now relate to you a tale that destroys sin: There once was, of old, a great demon known by the name Talamegha.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.245.6)

tena devā jitāḥ sarve hṛtarājyā narādhipa| yajñabhāgān svayaṁ bhuṅkte ahaṁ viṣṇurna saṁśayaḥ

By him all the gods were conquered, O lord of men, and their kingdom taken away; he himself enjoyed the shares of sacrifice, declaring, "I am Vishnu, there is no doubt."

Verse 7 (skanda.5.245.7)

dhanadasya hṛtaṁ cittaṁ hṛtaḥ śakrasya vāraṇaḥ| indrāṇīṁ vāñchate pāpo hayaratnaṁ raverapi

Kubera's mind was seized, Indra's elephant was taken away; the wicked one desired Indrani, and also the Sun's jewel of a horse.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.245.8)

tālameghabhayātpārtha ravirudrāḥ savāsavāḥ| yamaḥ skando jaleśo'gnirvāyurdevo dhaneśvaraḥ

Out of fear of Talamegha, O Partha, the Sun, the Rudras together with Vasava (Indra), Yama, Skanda, the Lord of Waters, Agni, the Wind-god, and Dhaneshvara (Kubera) —

Verse 9 (skanda.5.245.9)

savākpatimaheśāśca naṣṭacittāḥ pitāmaham| gatā devā brahmalokaṁ tatra dṛṣṭvā pitāmaham

together with Vachaspati (Brihaspati) and Mahesha, their minds shattered, went to the Grandsire; the gods went to Brahmaloka, and there, having seen the Grandsire,

Verse 10 (skanda.5.245.10)

tuṣṭuvurvividhaiḥ stotrairvāgīśapramukhāḥ surāḥ| guṇatrayavibhāgāya paścādbhedamupeyuṣe

the gods, led by Vagisha (Brihaspati), praised him with various hymns — him who, for the sake of dividing the three gunas, had afterward taken on differentiation.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.245.11)

dṛṣṭvā devānnirutsāhān vivarṇānavanīpate| prasādābhimukho devaḥ pratyuvāca divaukasaḥ

Seeing the gods dejected and pale, O lord of the earth, that god, inclined to grace, replied to the dwellers of heaven.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.245.12)

brahmovāca - svāgataṁ surasaṅghasya kāntirnaṣṭā purātanī| himakliṣṭaprabhāveṇa jyotīṁṣīva mukhāni vaḥ

Brahma said: "Welcome, host of gods. Your ancient splendor is lost; your faces, as if by the dulling effect of frost, look like dimmed heavenly lights."

Verse 13 (skanda.5.245.13)

praśamādarciṣāmetadanudgīrṇaṁ surāyudham| vṛtrasya hantuḥ kuliśaṁ kuṇṭhitaśrīva lakṣyate

Because its flames have dimmed, this weapon of the gods lies unraised; the thunderbolt of the slayer of Vritra seems to appear with blunted splendor.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.245.14)

kiṁ cāyamaridurvāraḥ pāṇau pāśaḥ pracetasaḥ| mantreṇa hatavīryasya phaṇino dainyamāśritaḥ

And this noose in the hand of Pracetas, unstoppable against foes — like a serpent whose power a spell has destroyed — seems to have taken on wretchedness.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.245.15)

kuberasya manaḥśalyaṁ śaṁsatīva parābhavam| apaviddhagato vāyurbhagnaśākha iva drumaḥ

It seems to proclaim the thorn in Kubera's heart and his defeat; the Wind-god, cast down and astray, appears like a tree with its branches broken.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.245.16)

yamo'pi vilikhanbhūmiṁ daṇḍenāstamitatviṣā| kurute'sminnamogho'pi nirvāṇālātalāghavam

Even Yama, his light dimmed, scratching the ground with his staff, though unfailing, shows here the lightness of an extinguished firebrand.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.245.17)

amī ca kathamādityāḥ pratāpakṣatiśītalāḥ| citranyastā iva gatāḥ prakāmālokanīyatām

And how is it that these Adityas, their fiery power cooled and diminished, have become, as it were, like figures set in a painting, fit to be gazed upon freely?

Verse 18 (skanda.5.245.18)

tadbrūta vatsāḥ kimitaḥ prārthayadhvaṁ samāgatāḥ| kimāgamanakṛtyaṁ vo brūta niḥsaṁśayaṁ surāḥ

So tell me, children, what do you seek in coming here? Tell me without doubt, O gods, the purpose of your coming.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.245.19)

mayi sṛṣṭirhi lokānāṁ rakṣā yuṣmāsvavasthitā| tato mandānilodbhūtakamalākaraśobhinā

For the creation of the worlds rests in me, but their protection rests in you. Then, resplendent like a lotus-bed stirred by a gentle breeze,

Verse 20 (skanda.5.245.20)

guruṁ netrasahasreṇa prerayāmāsa vṛtrahā| sa dvinetraṁ hareścakṣuḥ sahasranayanādhikam

Vritrahan (Indra) urged Guru (Brihaspati) on with his thousand eyes; though two-eyed, he became, like the eye of Hari, more radiant even than the thousand-eyed one.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.245.21)

vācaspatiruvācedaṁ prāñjalirjalajāsanam| yuṣmadvaṁśodbhavastāta tālamegho mahābalaḥ

Vachaspati, with joined palms, spoke thus to him seated on the lotus: "Father, the mighty Talamegha, born of your own lineage,

Verse 22 (skanda.5.245.22)

upatāpayate devāndhūmaketurivocchritaḥ| tena devagaṇāḥ sarve duḥkhitā dānavena ca

torments the gods, risen up like a comet. By that demon all the hosts of gods have become afflicted.

Verse 23 (skanda.5.245.23)

tālamegho daityapatiḥ sarvānno bādhate balī| tasmāttvāṁ śaraṇaṁ prāptāḥ śaraṇaṁ no vidhe bhava

Talamegha, lord of the daityas, that mighty one, oppresses all of us. Therefore we have come to you for refuge; O Vidhi, be our refuge."

Verse 24 (skanda.5.245.24)

tataḥ prasanno bhagavān vedhāstānabravīdvacaḥ

Then the blessed Vedhas (Brahma), pleased, spoke this word to them —

Verse 25 (skanda.5.245.25)

brahmovāca - tālameghena vo madhye balī tena samaḥ surāḥ| vinā mādhavadevena sādhyo me naiva dānavaḥ

Brahma said: "Among you, O gods, is there one as strong, equal to Talamegha? Without the god Madhava, this demon cannot be overcome even by me."

Verse 26 (skanda.5.245.26)

tataḥ suragaṇāḥ sarve viriñcipramukhā nṛpa| kṣīrodaṁ prasthitāḥ sarve duḥkhitāstena vairiṇā

Then, O king, all the hosts of gods, headed by Virinchi, afflicted by that foe, all set out for the Ocean of Milk.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.245.27)

tvaritāḥ prasthitā devāḥ keśavaṁ draṣṭukāmyayā| kṣīrodaṁ sāgaraṁ gatvāstuvaṁste jalaśāyinam

Swiftly the gods set out, desiring to see Keshava; having reached the Ocean of Milk, they praised him who lies in the water.

Verse 28 (skanda.5.245.28)

devā ūcuḥ| jagadādiranādistvaṁ jagadanto'pyanantakaḥ| jaganmūrtiramūrtistvaṁ jaya gīrvāṇapūjita

The gods said: "You are the beginning of the world, yet beginningless; you are the end of the world, yet endless. You are the form of the world, yet formless. Victory to you, worshipped by the gods!"

Verse 29 (skanda.5.245.29)

jaya kṣīrodaśayana jaya lakṣmyā sadā vṛta| jaya dānavanāśāya jaya devakinandana

"Victory to you who lie upon the Ocean of Milk! Victory to you who are ever accompanied by Lakshmi! Victory to you, destroyer of demons! Victory to you, son of Devaki!"

Verse 30 (skanda.5.245.30)

jaya śaṅkhagadāpāṇe jaya cakradhara prabho| iti devastutiṁ śrutvā prabuddho jalaśāyyatha

"Victory to you, holder of conch and mace! Victory to you, O Lord, bearer of the discus!" Hearing this praise of the gods, He who lies in the water awoke.

Verse 31 (skanda.5.245.31)

uvāca madhurāṁ vāṇīṁ meghagambhīranisvanām| kimarthaṁ bodhito brahman samarthairvaḥ surāsuraiḥ

He spoke in a sweet voice, resonant and deep as thunder: "For what reason have I been awakened, O Brahman, by you capable gods?"

Verse 32 (skanda.5.245.32)

brahmovāca - tālameghabhayātkṛṣṇa samprāptāstava mandiram| na vadhyaḥ kasyacitpāpastālamegho janārdana

Brahma said: "Out of fear of Talamegha, O Krishna, we have come to your abode. This sinful Talamegha cannot be slain by anyone, O Janardana."

Verse 33 (skanda.5.245.33)

tvameva jahi taṁ duṣṭaṁ mṛtyuṁ yāsyati nānyathā

"You alone can slay that wicked one; he will meet death in no other way."

Verse 34 (skanda.5.245.34)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca - svasthānaṁ gamyatāṁ devāḥ svakīyāṁ labhata prajām| duṣṭātmānaṁ haniṣyāmi tālameghaṁ mahābalam

Shri Krishna said: "Return, O gods, to your own abodes, and regain your own subjects; I shall slay the wicked, mighty Talamegha."

Verse 35 (skanda.5.245.35)

sthānaṁ bruvantu me devā vasedyatra sa dānavaḥ

"Let the gods tell me the place where that demon dwells."

Verse 36 (skanda.5.245.36)

devā ūcuḥ| himācalaguhāyāṁ sa vasate dānaveśvaraḥ| caturviṁśatisāhasraiḥ kanyābhiḥ parivāritaḥ

The gods said: "That lord of demons dwells in a cave of the Himalaya, surrounded by twenty-four thousand maidens."

Verse 37 (skanda.5.245.37)

turaṅgaiḥ syandanaiḥ kṛṣṇa saṁkhyā tasya na vidyate| naṭā nānāvidhāstatra asaṁkhyātaguṇā hare

"O Krishna, his horses and chariots are beyond counting; there are dancers of many kinds, O Hari, innumerable in their variety."

Verse 38 (skanda.5.245.38)

dviradāḥ parvatākārā hayāśca dviradopamāḥ| mahābalo vasettatra gīrvāṇabhayadāyakaḥ

"His elephants are mountain-like in size, and his horses are like elephants; that mighty terror of the gods dwells there."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.245.39)

śrutvā devo vacasteṣāṁ devānāmāturātmanām| acintayadgarutmantaṁ śatrusaṅghavināśanam

Having heard the words of those distressed gods, the Lord thought of Garutman, destroyer of hosts of enemies.

Verse 40 (skanda.5.245.40)

cakraṁ kareṇa saṁgṛhya gadācakradharaḥ prabhuḥ| śārṅgaṁ ca muśalaṁ sīraṁ karairgṛhya janārdanaḥ

Taking the discus in hand, the mace-and-discus-bearing Lord, and taking also the bow Sharnga, the club, and the plow, Janardana —

Verse 41 (skanda.5.245.41)

ārūḍhaḥ pakṣirājendraṁ vadhārthaṁ dānavasya ca| dānavasya pure peturutpātā ghorarūpiṇaḥ

mounted the king of birds to slay the demon. In the demon's city, omens of terrible aspect fell.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.245.42)

gomāyurgṛdhramadhye tu kapotaiḥ samamāviśat| vinā vātena tasyaiva dhvajadaṇḍaḥ papāta ha

A jackal entered among the vultures together with pigeons; without any wind, his very flagstaff fell down.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.245.43)

sarpasūṣakayoryuddhaṁ tathā kesarināgayoḥ| unmārgāḥ saritastatrāvahanraktavimiśritāḥ| akālatarupuṣpāṇi dṛśyante sma samantataḥ

There was a fight between serpent and mongoose, and likewise between lion and elephant; rivers ran off their courses, mixed with blood; trees blossomed out of season, seen on every side.

Verse 44 (skanda.5.245.44)

tataḥ prāpto jagannātho himavantaṁ nageśvaram| pāñcajanyaśvasahasā pūritaḥ purasannidhau

Then the Lord of the universe reached Himavan, king of mountains; near the city, all at once the air was filled with the blast of the conch Panchajanya.

Verse 45 (skanda.5.245.45)

tena śabdena mahatā hyārūḍho dānaveśvaraḥ| uvāca ca tadā vākyaṁ tālamegho mahābalaḥ

By that great sound the lord of demons mounted up, and then mighty Talamegha spoke these words —

Verse 46 (skanda.5.245.46)

tālamegha uvāca - ko'yaṁ mṛtyuvaśaṁ prāpto hyajñātvā mama vikramam| dhundhumārājñayā hyāśu svasainyaparivāritaḥ

Talamegha said: "Who is this that has come under the sway of death, not knowing my valor? O Dhundhumara, at my command, swiftly, surrounded by your own army,

Verse 47 (skanda.5.245.47)

balādānaya taṁ baddhvā mamāgre bahuśālinam

forcibly bind that greatly resourceful one and bring him before me."

Verse 48 (skanda.5.245.48)

dhundhumāra uvāca - ānayāmi na sandehaḥ suro yakṣo'tha kinnaraḥ| syandanaughaiḥ samāyukto gajavājibhaṭaiḥ saha

Dhundhumara said: "I shall bring him, no doubt, be he a god, a yaksha, or a kinnara — equipped with hosts of chariots, together with elephants, horses, and foot-soldiers."

Verse 49 (skanda.5.245.49)

hṛṣṭastato jagadyoniḥ suparṇastho mahābalaḥ| gṛhyatāṁ gṛhyatāmeṣa ityuktāstena kiṁkarāḥ

Then the mighty Source of the universe, seated on Suparna, rejoiced. "Seize him, seize him!" — thus his servants were commanded by him.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.245.50)

caturdikṣu pradhāvanta itaścetaśca sarvataḥ| suparṇenāgnirūpeṇa dagdhāste śalabhā yathā

They rushed in the four directions, hither and thither, everywhere; but they were burnt by Suparna, who had taken the form of fire, like moths in a flame.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.245.51)

dhundhumāro'pi kṛṣṇena śaraghātena tāḍitaḥ| hato vakṣaḥsthale pāpo mṛtāvastho rathopari

Dhundhumara too was struck by Krishna with a blow of an arrow; the sinful one, struck in the chest, lay dead upon his chariot.

Verse 52 (skanda.5.245.52)

hāhākāraṁ tataḥ sarve dānavāścakrurāturāḥ| tālameghastataḥ kruddho rathārūḍho vinirgataḥ| dadṛśe keśavaṁ pārtha śaṅkhacakragadādharam

Then all the demons, distressed, raised a cry of lamentation. Talamegha, enraged, mounted his chariot and came forth; O Partha, he saw Keshava, bearer of conch, discus, and mace.

Verse 53 (skanda.5.245.53)

tālamegha uvāca - anye te dānavāḥ kṛṣṇa ye hatāḥ samare tvayā| hiraṇyakaśipuprakhyānapumāṁso hi te'cyuta

Talamegha said: "Different, O Krishna, were those demons whom you slew in battle — mere men of the fame of Hiranyakashipu, O Achyuta."

Verse 54 (skanda.5.245.54)

ityuktvā dānavaḥ pārtha varṣayāmāsa sāyakaiḥ| dānavasya śarānmuktān chedayāmāsa keśavaḥ

Having said this, O Partha, the demon rained down arrows; Keshava cut down the arrows the demon released.

Verse 55 (skanda.5.245.55)

garutmānavadhītsainyamavadhyaṁ yatsurāsuraiḥ| kṛṣṇena dviguṇāstasya preṣitāḥ svaśilīmukhāḥ

Garutman slew the army that was unslayable even by gods and demons; by Krishna, twice as many of his own sharp shafts were sent.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.245.56)

dviguṇaṁ dviguṇīkṛtya preṣayāmāsa dānavaḥ| tānapyaṣṭaguṇaiḥ kṛṣṇaśchādayāmāsa sāyakaiḥ

The demon doubled that double again and sent them; those too Krishna covered over with eightfold arrows.

Verse 57 (skanda.5.245.57)

tataḥ kruddhena daityena hyāgneyaṁ bāṇamuttamam

Then the enraged daitya released the excellent Agneya, the fire weapon.

Verse 58 (skanda.5.245.58)

vāruṇaṁ preṣayāmāsa tvāgneyaṁ śamitaṁ tataḥ| vāruṇenaiva vāyavyaṁ tālamegho vyasarjayat

Krishna sent the Varuna weapon, by which the Agneya weapon was quenched; then, against the Varuna, Talamegha released the Vayavya, the wind weapon.

Verse 59 (skanda.5.245.59)

sārpaṁ caiva hṛṣīkeśo vāyavyasya praśāntaye| nārasiṁhaṁ nṛsiṁho'pi preṣayāmāsa pāṇḍava

Hrishikesha sent the Sarpa, the serpent weapon, to still the Vayavya; and, O Pandava, Krishna then sent the Narasimha weapon.

Verse 60 (skanda.5.245.60)

nārasiṁhaṁ tato dṛṣṭvā tālamegho mahābalaḥ| uttīrya syandanācchīghraṁ gṛhītvā khaḍgacarmaṇī

Seeing the Narasimha weapon, mighty Talamegha quickly leapt down from his chariot, seizing sword and shield —

Verse 61 (skanda.5.245.61)

kṛṣṇa tvāṁ preṣayiṣyāmi yamamārgaṁ sudāruṇam| ityuktvā dānavaḥ pārtha āgataḥ keśavaṁ prati

"O Krishna, I shall send you upon the most terrible path of Yama" — saying this, O Partha, the demon advanced toward Keshava.

Verse 62 (skanda.5.245.62)

khaḍgenātāḍayaddaityo gadāpāṇiṁ janārdanam| maṇḍalāgraṁ tato gṛhya keśavo hṛṣṭamānasaḥ

The daitya struck Janardana, the mace-bearer, with his sword. Then Keshava, seizing the rim of his shield, glad at heart —

Verse 63 (skanda.5.245.63)

jaghanoraḥsthale pārtha tālameghaṁ mahāhave| janārdanastadā daityaṁ daityo harimahanmṛdhe

struck Talamegha on hip and chest in that great battle, O Partha; thus Janardana struck the daitya, and the daitya struck Hari, in that combat.

Verse 64 (skanda.5.245.64)

janārdanastataḥ kruddhastālameghāya bhārata| amoghaṁ cakramādāya muktaṁ tasya ca mūrdhani

Then, O Bharata, Janardana, enraged, took up his unfailing discus and released it upon Talamegha's head.

Verse 65 (skanda.5.245.65)

nipapāta śirastasya parvatāśca cakampire| samudrāḥ kṣubhitāḥ pārtha nadya unmārgagāminīḥ

His head fell; the mountains trembled; the oceans were agitated, O Partha, and the rivers ran off their courses.

Verse 66 (skanda.5.245.66)

puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ tato devā mumucuḥ keśavopari| avadhyaḥ surasaṅghānāṁ sūditaḥ keśava tvayā

Then the gods showered flowers upon Keshava: "He who was unslayable by the hosts of gods has been slain by you, O Keshava."

Verse 67 (skanda.5.245.67)

svasthāścaiva tato devāstālameghe nipātite| janārdano'pi kaunteya narmadātaṭamāśritaḥ

With Talamegha fallen, the gods became at ease; and Janardana too, O son of Kunti, took his abode on the bank of the Narmada.

Verse 68 (skanda.5.245.68)

kṣīrodāṁ narmadāṁ matvā anantabhujagopari| lakṣmyā samanvitaḥ kṛṣṇo nilīnaścottare taṭe

Regarding the Narmada as the Ocean of Milk, Krishna, together with Lakshmi, lay hidden upon Ananta the serpent, on the northern bank.

Verse 69 (skanda.5.245.69)

cakraṁ vibhīṣaṇaṁ martye jvālāmālāsamanvitam| patitaṁ narmadātoye jalaśāyisamīpataḥ

The discus, terrifying to mortals, garlanded with flames, fell into the waters of the Narmada near Jalashayi.

Verse 70 (skanda.5.245.70)

nirdhūtakalmaṣaṁ jātaṁ narmadātoyayogataḥ| tālameghavadhotpannaṁ yatpāpaṁ nṛpanandana

Through contact with the waters of the Narmada it became cleansed of impurity — O prince, whatever sin had arisen from the slaying of Talamegha.

Verse 71 (skanda.5.245.71)

tatsravaṁ kṣālitaṁ sadyo narmadāṁbhasi bhārata| tadāprabhṛti loke'smiñjalaśāyī mahīpate

That taint, O Bharata, was instantly washed away in the waters of the Narmada; from that time on, O lord of the earth, this place in the world is known as Jalashayi.

Verse 72 (skanda.5.245.72)

cakratīrthaṁ vadantyanye kecitkālāghanāśanam| vikhyātaṁ bhārate varṣe narmadāyāṁ mahīpate

Some others call it Chakra-tirtha, destroyer of the sin of the age; renowned in the land of Bharata, on the Narmada, O lord of the earth.

Verse 73 (skanda.5.245.73)

tattīrthasya prabhāvo'yaṁ śrūyatāmavanīpate| yathā'nanto hi nāgānāṁ devānāṁ ca janārdanaḥ

Hear now, O lord of the earth, this glory of that ford: just as Ananta is greatest among serpents, and Janardana among gods,

Verse 74 (skanda.5.245.74)

māsānāṁ mārgaśīrṣo'sti nadīnāṁ narmadā yathā| māsi mārgaśire pārtha hyekādaśyāṁ site'hani

just as Margashirsha is greatest of months, and the Narmada of rivers — so too, O Partha, in the month of Margashirsha, on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight,

Verse 75 (skanda.5.245.75)

gatvā yo manujo bhaktyā kāmakrodhavivarjitaḥ| vaiṣṇavīṁ bhāvanāṁ kṛtvā jaleśaṁ tu vrajeta vai

whatever man, going there with devotion, free from desire and anger, having cultivated a Vaishnava disposition, approaches the Lord of the Waters,

Verse 76 (skanda.5.245.76)

ekabhuktaṁ ca naktaṁ ca tathaivāyācitaṁ nṛpa| upavāsaṁ tathā dānaṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ ca bhojanam

and observes the eka-bhukta vow, the nakta vow, and the ayachita vow, O king, as well as fasting, gift-giving, and the feeding of brahmins —

Verse 77 (skanda.5.245.77)

does not go, O best of the Kurus, to the abode of Yama. O son of Pandu, those beings who are afraid, in dread of Yama's realm,

Verse 78 (skanda.5.245.78)

te paśyantu śriyaḥ kāntaṁ nāgaparyaṅkaśāyinam| gopījanasamāvṛttaṁ yoganidrāṁ samāśritam| viśvarūpaṁ jagannāthaṁ saṁsārabhayanāśanam

let them behold the Beloved of Shri, reclining on his serpent couch, surrounded by the gopis, given over to yogic slumber — the universal form, Lord of the world, destroyer of the fear of worldly existence.

Verse 79 (skanda.5.245.79)

snāpayetparayā bhaktyā kṣaudrakṣīreṇa sarpiṣā| khaṇḍena toyamiśreṇa jagadyoniṁ janārdanam

One should bathe Janardana, the source of the world, with supreme devotion, in honey, milk, ghee, and sugar mixed with water.

Verse 80 (skanda.5.245.80)

snāpyamānaṁ ca paśyanti ye lokā gatamatsarāḥ| te yānti paramaṁ lokaṁ surāsuranamaskṛtam

Those free of envy who behold him being bathed go to the supreme world, worshipped by gods and demons.

Verse 81 (skanda.5.245.81)

ghṛtena bodhayeddīpamathavā tailapūritam| rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā daivasyāgre vimatsarāḥ

One should light a lamp with ghee, or one filled with oil, and, free of envy, keep vigil at night before the deity.

Verse 82 (skanda.5.245.82)

ye kathāṁ vaiṣṇavīṁ bhaktyā śṛṇvanti ca nṛpottama| brahmahatyādipāpāni naśyante nātra saṁśayaḥ

O best of kings, those who with devotion listen to this Vaishnava tale — their sins, beginning with the killing of a brahmin, are destroyed; of this there is no doubt.

Verse 83 (skanda.5.245.83)

pradakṣiṇanti ye martyā jalaśāyijagadgurum| pradakṣiṇīkṛtā taistu saptadvīpā vasuṁdharā

Those mortals who circumambulate Jalashayi, the guru of the universe — by them the seven-continented earth itself is circumambulated.

Verse 84 (skanda.5.245.84)

tataḥ prabhāte vimale pitṝn saṁtarpayejjalaiḥ| śrāddhaṁ ca brāhmaṇaistatra yogyaiḥ pāṇḍava mānavāḥ

Then, in the clear morning, one should offer libations of water to the ancestors; and, O Pandava, men should there perform the shraddha with worthy brahmins —

Verse 85 (skanda.5.245.85)

svadāranirataiḥ śāntaiḥ paradāravivarjakaiḥ| vedābhyasanaśīlaiśca svakarmanirataiḥ śubhaiḥ

brahmins devoted to their own wives, peaceful, who shun other men's wives, given to the study of the Vedas, and devoted to their own duties, of auspicious conduct —

Verse 86 (skanda.5.245.86)

nityaṁ yajanaśīlaiśca trisandhyāparipālakaiḥ| śraddhayā kārayecchrāddhaṁ yadīcchecchreya ātmanaḥ

ever engaged in sacrifice and keeping the three daily junctures — one should perform the shraddha with faith, if one desires one's own welfare.

Verse 87 (skanda.5.245.87)

te dhanyā mānuṣe loke vandyā hi bhuvi mānavāḥ| ye vasanti sadākālaṁ pādapadmāśrayā hareḥ

Blessed indeed are they in the world of men, and worthy of veneration on earth, those who ever dwell taking refuge at the lotus feet of Hari,

Verse 88 (skanda.5.245.88)

jalaśāyaṁ prapaśyanti pratyakṣaṁ suranāyakam| pakṣopavāsaṁ pārākaṁ vrataṁ cāndrāyaṇaṁ śubham

who behold directly Jalashayi, the leader of the gods. The fortnight-fast, the Paraka vow, the auspicious Chandrayana vow —

Verse 89 (skanda.5.245.89)

māsopavāsamugraṁ ca ṣaṣṭhānnaṁ pañcamaṁ vratam| tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ kuryātso'kṣayāṁ gatimāpnuyāt

the severe month-long fast, and the fifth vow of eating only every sixth meal — whoever performs these at that ford attains the imperishable state.

Verse 90 (skanda.5.245.90)

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi tiladhenośca yatphalam| yathā yasminyadā deyā dāne tasyāḥ śubhaṁ phalam

Shri Markandeya said: "Beyond this, I shall now declare the fruit of the sesame-cow gift — how, to whom, and when it should be given, and the auspicious fruit of that gift."

Verse 91 (skanda.5.245.91)

etatkathāntaraṁ puṇyamṛṣerdvaipāyanātpurā| śrutaṁ hi naimiṣe puṇye nāradādyairanekadhā

This sacred sub-tale was formerly heard, many times over, from the sage Dvaipayana, in the holy Naimisha forest, by Narada and others.

Verse 92 (skanda.5.245.92)

idaṁ paramamāyuṣyaṁ maṅgalyaṁ kīrtivardhanam| viprāṇāṁ śrāvayanvidvānphalānantyaṁsamaśnute

This is supremely life-giving, auspicious, and increases fame. The wise man who recites it to brahmins obtains endless fruit.

Verse 93 (skanda.5.245.93)

bahubhyo na pradeyāni gaurgṛhaṁ śayanaṁ striyaḥ| vibhaktadakṣiṇā hyetā dātāraṁ nāpnuvanti ca

A cow, a house, a bed, a wife — these should not be given jointly to many; given as a divided gift, these do not reach their giver in full merit.

Verse 94 (skanda.5.245.94)

ekametatpradātavyaṁ na bahūnāṁ yudhiṣṭhira| sā ca vikrayamāpannā dahatyāsaptamaṁ kulam

This should be given to one alone, O Yudhishthira, not to many. And if it falls into a state of being sold, it burns the giver's family down to the seventh generation.

Verse 95 (skanda.5.245.95)

yathālābhā tu sarveṣāṁ caturdroṇā tu gauḥ smṛtā| droṇasya vatsakaḥ kāryo bahūnāṁ vāpi kāmataḥ

According to what each can afford: the tila-cow is reckoned as four dronas of sesame; a calf should be made of one drona, or, for those of lesser means, proportionally as desired.

Verse 96 (skanda.5.245.96)

yasmindeśe tu yanmānaṁ viṣaye vā vicāritam| tena mānena tāṁ kurvannakṣayaṁ phalamaśnute

In whatever land or region a particular measure is customary, making the gift by that measure, one obtains imperishable fruit.

Verse 97 (skanda.5.245.97)

sukhapūrvaṁ śucau bhūmau puṣpadhūpākṣataistathā| karṇābhyāṁ ratne dātavye dīpau netradvaye tathā

With ease, upon pure ground, with flowers, incense, and unbroken rice — for the two ears jewels should be given, and for the pair of eyes, two lamps.

Verse 98 (skanda.5.245.98)

śrīkhaṇḍamurasi sthāpyaṁ tābhyāṁ caiva tu kāñcanam| ūrdhve madhu ghṛtaṁ deyaṁ kuryātsarṣaparomakam

Sandal-paste should be placed on the chest, and gold together with those ears and eyes; above, honey and ghee should be given, and mustard-seed used to form the hair.

Verse 99 (skanda.5.245.99)

kambale kambalaṁ dadyācchroṇyāṁ madhu ghṛtaṁ tathā| yavasaṁ pāyasaṁ dadyādghṛtaṁ kṣaudrasamanvitam

On the blanket a woolen blanket should be given; on the haunches, honey and ghee likewise; fodder and rice-pudding should be given, and ghee combined with honey.

Verse 100 (skanda.5.245.100)

svarṇaśṛṅgī rūpyaśiphārukmalāṅgūlasaṁyutā| ratnapṛṣṭhī tu dātavyā kāṁsyapātrāvadohinī

With golden horns, silver hooves, a golden tail, and a jeweled back, it should be given, fashioned to be milked into a bronze vessel.

Verse 101 (skanda.5.245.101)

yatsyādbālyakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ yadvā kṛtamajānatā| vācā kṛtaṁ karmakṛtaṁ manasā yadvicintitam

Whatever sin was committed in childhood, or committed unknowingly, whatever done by speech, done by deed, or merely thought in the mind —

Verse 102 (skanda.5.245.102)

jale niṣṭhīvitaṁ caiva muśalaṁ vāpi laṅghitam| vṛṣalīgamanaṁ caiva gurudāraniṣevaṇam

spitting into water, or stepping over a pestle, going to a low-caste woman, or approaching the wife of one's guru —

Verse 103 (skanda.5.245.103)

kanyāyā gamanaṁ caiva suvarṇasteyameva ca| surāpānaṁ tathā cānyattiladhenuḥ punāti hi

violating a maiden, the theft of gold, and drinking liquor, and other such sins — the sesame-cow indeed purifies all of these.

Verse 104 (skanda.5.245.104)

ahorātropavāsena vidhivattāṁ visarjayet| yā sā yamapure ghore nadī vaitaraṇī smṛtā

Having fasted a day and a night, one should give it away according to rule; that river remembered as the terrible Vaitarani in Yama's dreadful realm,

Verse 105 (skanda.5.245.105)

vālukāyo'śmasthalā ca pacyate yatra duṣkṛtī| avīcirnarako yatra yatra yāmalaparvatau

and the sand-hell and the stone-region, where the evildoer is cooked; the Avichi hell, and the twin mountains of Yama —

Verse 106 (skanda.5.245.106)

yatra lohamukhāḥ kākā yatra śvāno bhayaṁkarāḥ| asipattravanaṁ caiva yatra sā kūṭaśālmalī

where there are iron-beaked crows, where there are terrifying dogs, the forest of sword-leaves, and that deceptive silk-cotton tree —

Verse 107 (skanda.5.245.107)

tānsukhena vyatikramya dharmarājālayaṁ vrajet| dharmarājastu taṁ dṛṣṭvā sūnṛtaṁ vakti bhārata

having passed beyond all these with ease, one goes to the abode of Dharmaraja; and Dharmaraja, O Bharata, seeing him, speaks kindly, truthful words —

Verse 108 (skanda.5.245.108)

vimānamuttamaṁ yogyaṁ maṇiratnavibhūṣitam| atrāruhya naraśreṣṭha prayāhi paramāṁ gatim

"Here is an excellent, fitting celestial chariot, adorned with jewels and gems; mount it, O best of men, and go to the supreme destination."

Verse 109 (skanda.5.245.109)

mā ca cāṭu bhaṭe dehi maiva dehi purohite| mā ca kāṇe virūpe ca nyūnāṅge na ca devale

As for the gift: do not give it to a flatterer or a soldier, do not give it to a family priest, nor to a one-eyed man, a deformed man, one with a defective limb, nor to a temple-priest,

Verse 110 (skanda.5.245.110)

avedaviduṣe naiva brāhmaṇe sarvavikraye| mitraghne ca kṛtaghne ca mantrahīne tathaiva ca

nor to a brahmin ignorant of the Veda, nor one who sells everything, nor to a betrayer of friends, nor an ingrate, nor to one devoid of sacred formulae —

Verse 111 (skanda.5.245.111)

vedāntagāya dātavyā śrotriyāya kuṭumbine| vedāntagasute deyā śrotriye gṛhapālake

it should be given to one versed in Vedanta, to a Shrotriya householder; it should be given to the son of a knower of Vedanta, to a Shrotriya who keeps his household —

Verse 112 (skanda.5.245.112)

sarvāṅgarucire vipre sadvṛtte ca priyaṁvade| pūrṇimāyāṁ tu māghasya kārttikyāmatha bhārata

to a brahmin handsome in every limb, of good conduct, and sweet-spoken. O Bharata, on the full moon of Magha, or of Kartika,

Verse 113 (skanda.5.245.113)

vaiśākhyāṁ mārgaśīrṣyāṁ vāṣāḍhyāṁ caitryāmathāpi vā| ayane viṣuve caiva vyatīpāte ca sarvadā

or of Vaishakha, Margashirsha, Ashadha, or Chaitra also; at the solstice, at the equinox, and always at the conjunction called Vyatipata,

Verse 114 (skanda.5.245.114)

ṣaḍaśītimukhe puṇye chāyāyāṁ kuṁjarasya vā| eṣa te kathitaḥ kalpastiladhenormayānagha

at the sacred beginning of Shadashiti, or in the shadow of the elephant — this, O sinless one, is the procedure of the sesame-cow I have declared to you.

Verse 115 (skanda.5.245.115)

vrajanti vaiṣṇavaṁ lokaṁ dattvā pādaṁ yamopari| prāṇatyāgātparaṁ lokaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ| bhittvāśu bhāskaraṁ yānti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

Setting their foot upon Yama, they go to the Vaishnava world; and by giving up the breath of life there, they go to the supreme Vaishnava world — of this there is no doubt; swiftly they pass, piercing through the solar orb — of this there is no need for deliberation.

Verse 116 (skanda.5.245.116)

etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ cakratīrthaphalaṁ nṛpa| yacchrutvā mānavo bhaktyā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate

This, O king, is the entire fruit of Chakra-tirtha that has been declared to you; hearing it with devotion, a man is freed from all sins.
