The Greatness of Chandaditya

Verse 1 (skanda.5.246.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच - ततो गच्छेन्महीपाल तीर्थपरमपावनम्। चण्डादित्यं नृपश्रेष्ठ स्थापितं चण्डमुण्डयोः

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca - tato gacchenmahīpāla tīrthaparamapāvanam| caṇḍādityaṁ nṛpaśreṣṭha sthāpitaṁ caṇḍamuṇḍayoḥ

Shri Markandeya said: "Then, O king, one should go to a most purifying ford, O best of kings — Chandaditya, established by Chanda and Munda."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.246.2)

आस्तां पुरा महादैत्यौ चण्डमुण्डौ सुदारुणौ। नर्मदातीरमाश्रित्य चेरतुर्विपुलं तपः

āstāṁ purā mahādaityau caṇḍamuṇḍau sudāruṇau| narmadātīramāśritya ceraturvipulaṁ tapaḥ

There once were, of old, two great and terrible daityas, Chanda and Munda, who, resorting to the bank of the Narmada, performed extensive austerity,

Verse 3 (skanda.5.246.3)

ध्यायन्तौ भास्करं देवं तमोनाशं जगत्त्रये। तुष्टस्तत्तपसा देवः सहस्रांशुरुवाच ह

dhyāyantau bhāskaraṁ devaṁ tamonāśaṁ jagattraye| tuṣṭastattapasā devaḥ sahasrāṁśuruvāca ha

meditating upon the god Bhaskara, destroyer of darkness in the three worlds. Pleased by their austerity, the thousand-rayed god spoke:

Verse 4 (skanda.5.246.4)

साधु साध्विति तौ पार्थ नर्मदायाः शुभे तटे। वरं प्रार्थयतं वीरौ यथेष्टं चेतसेच्छितम्

sādhu sādhviti tau pārtha narmadāyāḥ śubhe taṭe| varaṁ prārthayataṁ vīrau yatheṣṭaṁ cetasecchitam

"Well done, well done," O Partha, he said to those two on the auspicious bank of the Narmada: "Ask a boon, O heroes, whatever is desired in your hearts, as you wish."

Verse 5 (skanda.5.246.5)

चण्डमुण्डावूचतुः। अजेयौ सर्वदेवानां भूयास्वावां समाहितौ। सर्वरोगैः परित्यक्तौ सर्वकालं दिवाकर

caṇḍamuṇḍāvūcatuḥ| ajeyau sarvadevānāṁ bhūyāsvāvāṁ samāhitau| sarvarogaiḥ parityaktau sarvakālaṁ divākara

Chanda and Munda said: "O Divakara, may we two, with steadfast mind, become unconquerable by all the gods, and remain forever free from all diseases."

Verse 6 (skanda.5.246.6)

एवमस्त्विति तौ प्राह भास्करो वारितस्करः। इत्युक्त्वान्तर्दधे भानुर्दैत्याभ्यां तत्र भास्करः

evamastviti tau prāha bhāskaro vāritaskaraḥ| ityuktvāntardadhe bhānurdaityābhyāṁ tatra bhāskaraḥ

"So be it," said Bhaskara, the stealer of water [with his rays], to the two; having said this, Bhanu vanished there from before the two daityas.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.246.7)

स्थापितः परया भक्त्या तं गच्छेदात्मसिद्धये। गीर्वाणांश्च मनुष्यांश्च पितॄंस्तत्रापि तर्पयेत्

sthāpitaḥ parayā bhaktyā taṁ gacchedātmasiddhaye| gīrvāṇāṁśca manuṣyāṁśca pitṝṁstatrāpi tarpayet

He was established there with supreme devotion; one should go there for the accomplishment of one's own aims, and should also offer tarpana there to the gods, to men, and to the ancestors.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.246.8)

स वसेद्भास्करे लोके विरिञ्चिदिवसं नृप। घृतेन बोधयेद्दीपं षष्ठ्यां स च नरेश्वर। मुच्यते सर्वपापैस्तु प्रतियाति पुरं रवेः

sa vasedbhāskare loke viriñcidivasaṁ nṛpa| ghṛtena bodhayeddīpaṁ ṣaṣṭhyāṁ sa ca nareśvara| mucyate sarvapāpaistu pratiyāti puraṁ raveḥ

He dwells in the world of Bhaskara for the span of a day of Brahma, O king. And, O lord of men, on the sixth tithi one should light a lamp with ghee; he is freed from all sins and goes to the city of the Sun.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.246.9)

उत्पत्तिं चण्डभानोर्यः शृणोति भरतर्षभ। विजयी स सदा नूनमाधिव्याधिविवर्जितः

utpattiṁ caṇḍabhānoryaḥ śṛṇoti bharatarṣabha| vijayī sa sadā nūnamādhivyādhivivarjitaḥ

O bull of the Bharatas, whoever hears of the origin of Chandabhanu is ever victorious, and surely free from mental and physical afflictions.
