The Greatness of Angirasa Tirtha
Verse 1 (skanda.5.267.1)
śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchettu rājendra tīrthamāṅgirasasya tu| uttare narmadākūle sarvapāpavināśanam||
Shri Markandeya said: Thereafter, O lord of kings, one should go to the tirtha of Angiras, on the northern bank of the Narmada, destroyer of all sin.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.267.2)
purāsīdaṅgirānāma brāhmaṇo vedapāragaḥ| putrahetoryugasyādau cacāra vipulaṁ tapaḥ||
Formerly there was a brahmin named Angira, learned in the Veda; at the beginning of the age, for the sake of a son, he performed extensive austerity.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.267.3)
nityaṁ triṣavaṇasnāyī japandevaṁ sanātanam| pūjayaṁśca mahādevaṁ kṛcchracāndrāyaṇādibhiḥ||
Ever bathing thrice daily, reciting the name of the eternal god, and worshipping Mahadeva with hardships like the Chandrayana fast and others.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.267.4)
dvādaśābde tataḥ pūrṇe tutoṣa parameśvaraḥ| vareṇa chandayāmāsa dvijamāṅgirasaṁ varam||
Then, when twelve years were complete, the Supreme Lord was pleased and offered the excellent brahmin Angirasa a boon.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.267.5)
vavre sa tu mahādevaṁ putraṁ putravatāṁ varam| vedavidyāvratasnātaṁ sarvaśāstraviśāradam||
He asked Mahadeva for a son, best among those blessed with sons, one bathed in the vow of Vedic learning, skilled in all the shastras -
Verse 6 (skanda.5.267.6)
devānāṁ mantriṇaṁ rājan sarvalokeṣu pūjitam| brahmalakṣmyāḥ sadāvāsamakṣayaṁ cāvyayaṁ sutam||
- O king, a counselor of the gods, honoured in all the worlds, an eternal, imperishable son, the everlasting abode of Brahma's fortune.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.267.7)
tathābhilaṣitaḥ putraḥ sarvavidyāviśāradaḥ| bhaviṣyati na sandehaścaivamuktvā yayau haraḥ||
'Such a desired son, skilled in all learning, shall be born to you - there is no doubt.' Having said this, Hara departed.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.267.8)
varairaṅgirasaścāpi bṛhaspatirajāyata| yathābhilaṣitaḥ putro vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ||
By that boon, to Angiras was born Brihaspati, the desired son, versed in the Vedas and Vedangas.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.267.9)
jāte putre'ṅgirāstatra sthāpayāmāsa śaṅkaram| hṛṣṭatuṣṭamanā bhūtvā jagāmottaraparvatam||
When the son was born, Angiras installed Shankara there; and, glad and content at heart, he went to the northern mountain.
Verse 10 (skanda.5.267.10)
tatra cāṅgirase tīrthe yaḥ snātvā pūjayecchivam| sarvapāpavinirmukto rudralokaṁ sa gacchati||
There, at the Angirasa tirtha, whoever bathes and worships Shiva, freed from all sin, goes to the world of Rudra.
Verse 11 (skanda.5.267.11)
aputro labhate putramadhano dhanamāpnuyāt| icchate yaśca yaṁ kāmaṁ sa taṁ labhati mānavaḥ||
The sonless obtains a son, the poor obtains wealth; whatever desire a person wishes for, that he obtains.
