"'-- It was at Prabhāsa, on a pilgrimage; you alone can bring him back here.' 'So be it,' said Kṛṣṇa, and, with Rāma's consent, he departed."

Verse 23 (skanda.5.27.23)
tataḥ paṁcajanaṁ hatvā grāharūpaṁ mahābalam tanmadhyasthaṁ ca jagrāha śaṁkhaṁ grasto hi yaḥ purā

Yet, though he thus took the conch with great ease from the water-dweller's belly, when Janārdana did not find the boy within it --

"'-- by which, having conquered the King of the Dead in battle, I may behold the boy.' Hearing this, Varuṇa, his heart delighted, knowing Hari to be intent on his purpose, gave him that chariot, unshakeable in battle even by gods and asuras."
Verse 29 (skanda.5.27.29)

ajeyaṁ devadeveṁdradānavāsurarākṣasaiḥ anekāyudhasaṁpūrṇaṁ maṇividrumabhūṣitam
"-- unconquerable by gods, by the lord of gods, by dānavas, asuras, or rākṣasas, filled with many weapons, adorned with gems and coral --"

sahasrasūryapratimaṁ cāruvaktracaturyugam kiṁkiṇīśataśobhāḍhyaṁ ghaṁṭācāmaracaṁ drikam
"-- resembling a thousand suns, with four beautiful yoke-parts, rich with the splendour of a hundred small bells, adorned with bells, whisks and moon-ornaments --"
Verse 33 (skanda.5.27.33)
saṁvartākāraviṣamaṁ khageṁdravaraketanam dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇaḥ sarāmastu mumude vītavismayāt
"-- irregular in shape like the fire of dissolution, bearing Garuḍa's banner — beholding it, Kṛṣṇa, together with Rāma, rejoiced, his wonder now spent."
Verse 34 (skanda.5.27.34)
pradakṣiṇamupākṛtya devatābhyaḥ praṇamya ca āruroha rathaṁ viṣṇurvimānaṁ sāgrayojanam
Having circumambulated it and bowed to the gods, Viṣṇu mounted the chariot — a celestial car more than a yojana in extent.
Verse 35 (skanda.5.27.35)
tato jagāma tvarito janārdano jagannivāso yamalokamāśritām diśaṁ sahasraiḥ kiraṇai rvṛtāṁ purīṁ dadhmau ca śaṁkhaṁ parigṛhya cācyutaḥ
Then Janārdana, the abode of the universe, swiftly went to the region of the world of Yama; and the Unfallen One, taking up his conch, blew it before that city surrounded by a thousand rays.
Verse 36 (skanda.5.27.36)
tatra pradhyāpayāmāsa śaṁkhaṁ śārṅgadhanurdharaḥ tena śabdena vitrastāḥ kṛtāṁtālayavāsinaḥ
There he, the bearer of the Śārṅga bow, sounded the conch loudly. By that sound, the dwellers in the abode of Yama were struck with terror.
Verse 37 (skanda.5.27.37)
narakāṁtargatā martyāḥ pāpācāraparāyaṇāḥ sukhamāpuḥ prasannāśca vahnayaḥ kṛṣṇadarśanāt
The mortals within the hells, devoted to sinful conduct, obtained happiness and became at peace; and the tormenting fires too grew gentle at the sight of Kṛṣṇa.
Verse 38 (skanda.5.27.38)
śastrāṇi kuṁṭhatāṁ prāpuryaṁtrāṇi vividhāni ca vidīrṇāni tadā cāsurdevadevasya darśanāt
The weapons of torment became blunted, and the various torture-engines were shattered, at the sight of the God of gods.
Verse 39 (skanda.5.27.39)
asipatravanaṁnāma śīrṇaparṇamajāyata rauravanāma narakamabhairavamabhūttadā
The forest called Asipatravana, whose leaves are swords, had its leaves wither away; the hell called Raurava then became free of terror.
Verse 40 (skanda.5.27.40)
abhairavaṁ bhairavākhyaṁ kuṁbhīpākamavācikam śṛṁgāṭaṁ śṛṁgasadṛśaṁ lohasūcyapyasūcikā
The hell called Bhairava became free of terror; Kumbhīpāka became silent of its cries; Śṛṅgāṭa, once like piercing horns, and the Lohasūcī, became as if without needles.
Verse 41 (skanda.5.27.41)
dustarā sutarā jātā nadī vaitaraṇī nṛṇām narakāṁte tadā jāte gate viśveśvare vibhau
The river Vaitaraṇī, impassable for men, became easily crossable. Thus, when hell had thus come to an end, upon the departure of the mighty Lord of the universe --
Verse 42 (skanda.5.27.42)
pāpakṣayāttataḥ sarve te muktā nārakā narāḥ padamavyayamāsādya dṛṣṭvā viṣṇuṁ tamo'paham
"-- through the destruction of their sins, all those men in hell were freed, and, having beheld Viṣṇu, dispeller of darkness, attained the imperishable state."
Verse 43 (skanda.5.27.43)
vimāneṣu sahasreṣu hyārūḍhāste samaṁtataḥ samīkṣya puṁḍarīkākṣaṁ muktāste sarvapātakāt
Mounted upon a thousand celestial cars from every side, having beheld the lotus-eyed one, they were freed from all sin.
Verse 44 (skanda.5.27.44)
tataḥ śūnyaṁ mune jātaṁ sarvaṁ nirayamaṁḍalam darśanāttasya devasya viṣṇorviśvasvarūpiṇaḥ
Thus, O sage, the entire realm of hell became empty, through the sight of that god Viṣṇu, whose form is the universe itself.
Verse 45 (skanda.5.27.45)
tato dūtāḥ kṛtāṁtasya kṛṣṇaṁ ca yuddhakāriṇam vārayāmāsuratyugrā viśaṁtaṁ narakānprati
Then the messengers of Yama, exceedingly fierce, tried to bar Kṛṣṇa, the maker of war, as he pressed on into the hells.
Verse 46 (skanda.5.27.46)
kiṁkarā ūcuḥ mā vīrānena mārgeṇa rathamānaya mānavan prayāṁtyadhogatiṁ pāpātparastrīsvāpahārakāḥ
The servants of Yama said: "O hero, do not bring your chariot by this road! Those going to a downward state on account of sin are the ravishers of other men's wives and property."
Verse 47 (skanda.5.27.47)
yamādiṣṭā narāḥ pāpā ye'mocyā varṣakoṭibhiḥ dṛṣṭvā ta eva sadyastvāṁ gatāḥ svargamapāvṛtāḥ
"'Sinful men consigned here by Yama, who could not be released even in ten million years, upon seeing you have this instant gone to an open heaven.'"
Verse 48 (skanda.5.27.48)
etacchrutvā vacasteṣāṁ kṛpayā pīḍito bhṛśam punaḥ provāca madhuhā mokṣāyāhamupāgataḥ
Hearing their words, deeply moved by compassion, the slayer of Madhu spoke again: "I have come here for the sake of liberation."
Verse 49 (skanda.5.27.49)
sarveṣāṁ svargadātāhaṁ yamalokanivārakaḥ aṁjasā yamarāḍdūtā yamāyākhyāta me vacaḥ
"'I am the giver of heaven to all, the restrainer of the world of Yama. O messengers of the Lord of Death, go straightway and declare my word to Yama.'"
Verse 50 (skanda.5.27.50)
etacchrutvā vaco dūtāḥ satvarā yamamāgatāḥ sarvamācakṣire vṛttaṁ yathā nārakamokṣaṇam
Hearing this word, the messengers hastened to Yama and reported to him everything that had occurred, including the release of the beings in hell.
Verse 51 (skanda.5.27.51)
tato yamo ruṣāviṣṭaḥ prāha tānyamakiṁkarān yaḥ kaścidāgato martyo maryādābhedakṛnnaraḥ
Then Yama, seized with fury, said to his servants: "Whatever mortal man has come here, transgressing the established boundary --"
Verse 52 (skanda.5.27.52)
taṁ gatvā vārayadhvaṁ vai gṛhītvānīyatāmiti ayaṁ narāṁtako yātu kiṁkaraḥ saha kiṁkaraiḥ
"'-- go and stop him; seize him and bring him here!' 'Let this Narāntaka go, along with the other servants' -- so he commanded."
Verse 53 (skanda.5.27.53)
evamukto yamenātha kiṁkaraḥ sa narāṁtakaḥ gatvā taṁ vārayāmāsa vāgbhirugrābhiracyutam
Thus commanded by Yama, that servant Narāntaka went and tried to stop the Unfallen One with harsh words.
Verse 54 (skanda.5.27.54)
yadā na vāritastasthau tadā kruddho narāṁtakaḥ tadā śarairatīvograistāḍitastena keśavaḥ
When he found himself unable to stop him, Narāntaka became enraged, and then struck Keśava with extremely fierce arrows.
Verse 55 (skanda.5.27.55)
baladevopi samare tāḍito vividhaiḥ śaraiḥ tāvubhau tāḍitau ghoraiḥ samaṁtādyamakiṁkaraiḥ
Baladeva too was struck in that battle with various arrows; the two of them were struck on every side by the terrible servants of Yama.
Verse 56 (skanda.5.27.56)
ādāya dhanuṣī divye jaghnaturyamakiṁkarān bāṇairanekasāhasraiḥ kruddhau rāmajanādarnau
Taking up their two divine bows, Rāma and Janārdana, now enraged, struck down the servants of Yama with many thousands of arrows.
Verse 57 (skanda.5.27.57)
narāṁtako'pi samare balena balinārditaḥ papāta gadayā bhinno mūrdhni niryātalocanaḥ
Narāntaka too, in the battle, overwhelmed by the might of the mighty Balarāma, fell, his head shattered by the mace, his eyes bursting out.
Verse 58 (skanda.5.27.58)
tato narāṁtake vīre patite yamakiṁkare kiṁkarāṇāmabhūtsainyamārtaṁ raṇaparāṅmukham
Then, when the hero Narāntaka, servant of Yama, had fallen, the army of the other servants was distressed and turned away from battle.
Verse 59 (skanda.5.27.59)
rāmakṛṣṇābhyāṁ te dūtā hanyamānā bhayāturāḥ yamāya kathayāmāsurnarāṁtakastu pātitaḥ
Those messengers, being struck down by Rāma and Kṛṣṇa, terrified, reported to Yama that Narāntaka had been felled.
Verse 60 (skanda.5.27.60)
tato yamo yayau kruddhaḥ samaṁtātkiṁkarairvṛtaḥ prāha tato yamaḥ kruddho no jitohaṁ purā paraiḥ
Then Yama, enraged, went forth, surrounded on every side by his servants. Enraged, Yama then said: "I have never before been conquered by any foe."
Verse 61 (skanda.5.27.61)
tato vāditranirghoṣaistumulānakagomukhaiḥ nānāḍamarukaiścaiva citraguptaiśca gacchati
Then he set out amid the tumultuous din of musical instruments and kettle-drums, and with various small drums, accompanied by Citragupta.
Verse 62 (skanda.5.27.62)
devā vidyādharāḥ siddhā dṛṣṭvā yāṁtaṁ mahābalam kṛtāṁtasya raṇe'kṣobhyaṁ kāmapālaṁ jagatpatim
The gods, the vidyādharas, and the siddhas beheld that mighty Yama going forth to battle, unshakeable, before Kṛṣṇa, the guardian of desire, the Lord of the world.
Verse 63 (skanda.5.27.63)
tataste kiṁkarāḥ sarve citraguptena noditāḥ rathamāvṛtya bāṇaughaiḥ pravivyadhuḥ samaṁtataḥ
Then all those servants, urged on by Citragupta, surrounded the chariot and pierced it on every side with a mass of arrows.
Verse 64 (skanda.5.27.64)
balaṁ ca keśavaṁ saṁkhye jaghnatustāvubhāvapi raṇe ca vividhairbāṇaiścitraguptasya paśyataḥ
They struck both Bala and Keśava in that battle with various arrows, in the fray, before the very eyes of Citragupta --
Verse 65 (skanda.5.27.65)
vidārya ca sahasrāṇi kiṁkarāṇāṁ samaṁtataḥ kṛtāṁtānīkinīmadhye kṛtāṁta iva keśavaḥ cacāra raṇadurdharṣaḥ kāmapālena pālitaḥ
"-- rending thousands of servants on every side, Keśava, like Death itself, moved through the midst of Yama's army, unassailable in battle, guarded by Balarāma."
Verse 66 (skanda.5.27.66)

Then Citragupta, seeing the foremost of the servants torn apart in battle, cried out in anguish.
Verse 67 (skanda.5.27.67)

With five arrows he struck Kṛṣṇa as he advanced in battle, and with eight more he struck him on the face; wounded by arrows, he sank down on the floor of his chariot; and Kṛṣṇa, seeing him thus wounded and bereft of his senses, was moved with pity.
Verse 68 (skanda.5.27.68)

Then, taking up his own chariot, Yama withdrew, since Citragupta lay wounded by arrows as if asleep, his glory lost in battle; shaken with fear, Yama, together with his army, sat down, stricken with terror.
Verse 69 (skanda.5.27.69)
pradhānāśca bhagnā vicitrāśca bhagrāstataścitraguptaṁ niśamyātha bhagnam sa kālastamāyāṁtamālokya dūrādvarasainyamādāya devāri śatrum
His chief warriors were broken, and his wondrous host was broken; then, hearing that Citragupta himself was broken, and beholding from afar Kṛṣṇa advancing, Kāla took up his finest army against that enemy of the gods' foes --
Verse 70 (skanda.5.27.70)
vināśāya yudhyadyugāṁte prajānāṁ yathā vāḍavo jvālavṛddhaḥ pravṛttaḥ tamāyāṁtamālokya kālaṁ karālaṁ śarairāvṛṇodaṁtakaṁ kālakalpaiḥ
"-- and advanced to fight for the destruction of creatures, like the submarine fire grown fierce with flame at the end of an age. Beholding that terrible Kāla advancing, Kṛṣṇa covered him with arrows like agents of death themselves."
Verse 71 (skanda.5.27.71)
sa kālaḥ karālaṁ samādāya daṁḍaṁ mumocācyute paśyatāṁ devatānām tataḥ kāladaṁḍaḥ prajānāṁ vināśo hareḥ saṁnikāśaṁ samabhyājagāma
That Kāla, taking up his terrible staff of death, hurled it at the Unfallen One before the very eyes of the gods; then that staff of Death, the destroyer of creatures, came flying straight toward Hari.
Verse 72 (skanda.5.27.72)

Then the gods, gandharvas, yakṣas, and lords of sages were struck with the greatest astonishment, beholding Rāma; and Rāma, of infinite form, seized that blazing staff of Kāla with supreme ease, as though in play.
Verse 73 (skanda.5.27.73)

gṛhīte balenāhave kāladaṁḍe moktukāme punaḥ kālanāśāya vai tūrṇamabhyetya tatrāṁtare raṇe vārayāmāsa kṛṣṇaṁ tadā
When the staff of Kāla had been seized by Bala in battle, and Kāla wished to hurl it again for Kṛṣṇa's destruction, Brahmā swiftly approached in the midst of that battle and restrained Kṛṣṇa.
Verse 74 (skanda.5.27.74)

"Do not release it!" said the Ordainer to Kāla; and to Bala, who wielded the very weapon of Death: "By you, O mighty hero, the earth, bearer of all moving and unmoving things --"
Verse 75 (skanda.5.27.75)
