vāri somātsamutpannaṁ vyāsa tenaiva tejasā praviṣṭā sā nadī śiprāmamṛtenātipūritā
O Vyāsa, water arose from Soma by that very splendour; it entered the river Śiprā, filling it to overflowing with nectar.
Verse 58 (skanda.5.28.58)
tataḥ somavatī śiprā vikhyātā sarvasi ddhidā somayuktāṁ nadīṁ śiprāṁ dṛṣṭvā pāpaṁ vyapohati
Thence the Śiprā became renowned as Somavatī, the giver of all accomplishments; beholding the Śiprā joined with Soma, one dispels sin.
Verse 59 (skanda.5.28.59)
khyātā ca triṣu lokeṣu pāpināṁ puṇyadāyinī brahmahā vā surāpo vā steyī vā gurutalpagaḥ
It is renowned in the three worlds as a bestower of merit even upon sinners: the killer of a brāhmaṇa, or the drinker of liquor, or the thief, or the violator of his teacher's bed --
Verse 60 (skanda.5.28.60)
catvāro'pyatra pāpena mucyaṁte darśanāddhruvam amāsomau yadā yuktau somavatyāṁ tadā mune
"-- all four of these are surely freed from their sin by the mere sight of it. O sage, when the new moon and Monday coincide at Somavatī --"
Verse 61 (skanda.5.28.61)
snānaṁ dānaṁ ca yo dhīmāñjapaṁ homaṁ samācaret akṣayaṁ tasya tatsarvaṁ yāvaccaṁdradivākarau
"-- whatever bathing, gift-giving, mantra-recitation, or fire-oblation a wise man performs then, all of it becomes imperishable for as long as the moon and sun endure."
Verse 62 (skanda.5.28.62)
tilodakapradānena piṁḍadānena kāritā akāle kālikī tṛptiḥ pitṝṇāṁ ca yato matā
By the offering of sesame-water and by the offering of rice-balls performed then, even an untimely satisfaction is held to come to the ancestors.
Verse 63 (skanda.5.28.63)
sarvatra durlabhā siprā somaṁ somagrahastathā someśvaraḥ somavāraḥ sakārāḥ paṁca durlabhāḥ
Everywhere rare is the combination of the Śiprā, the moon, a lunar conjunction, Someśvara, and Monday — these five, all beginning with the sound 'sa', are rare to find together.
Verse 64 (skanda.5.28.64)
śiprāsomajalaṁ vyāsa koṭitīrthaphalapradam amāsomasamāyoge pitṛtīrthasamaṁ smṛtam
O Vyāsa, the water of the Śiprā joined with Soma bestows the fruit of Koṭitīrtha; at the conjunction of the new moon and Monday, it is remembered as equal to a Pitṛtīrtha.
Verse 65 (skanda.5.28.65)
amāyāṁ somavāraścedvyatīpāto yadā bhavet śataguṇaṁ gayāyāstu somavatyāṁ prakīrtitam
If Monday falls on the new moon together with a vyatīpāta conjunction, it is declared that the merit at Somavatī is a hundredfold that of Gayā.
Verse 66 (skanda.5.28.66)
evaṁ somavatītīrthaṁ jātamatra mahāmune somaṁ dṛṣṭvātha patitaṁ kṣitau brahmā jagadguruḥ
Thus, O great sage, the ford of Somavatī arose here. Then Brahmā, teacher of the world, seeing Soma fallen upon the earth --
Verse 67 (skanda.5.28.67)
rathe taṁ sthāpayāmāsa lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā saṁ tu vedamayo vyāsa dharmākṣaḥ satyasaṁgrahaḥ
"-- set him upon a chariot, out of desire for the welfare of the worlds. O Vyāsa, that chariot was made of the Vedas, its axle was dharma, and it was a repository of truth."
Verse 68 (skanda.5.28.68)
yukto vājisahasreṇa brahmaṇā preritastadā dṛṣṭvā somaṁ tato devā rathe taṁ brahmaṇā yutam
Yoked with a thousand steeds, it was then driven by Brahmā. Then the gods, seeing Soma there upon the chariot together with Brahmā --
Verse 69 (skanda.5.28.69)
tuṣṭuvuḥ sarvabhāvena hṛṣṭāḥ sarve samāhitāḥ tasya saṁstūyamānasya tejaḥ somasya bhāsvaram
"-- praised him with their whole being, all of them delighted and composed. As he was thus being praised, the radiant splendour of Soma --"
Verse 70 (skanda.5.28.70)
āpyāyamānaṁ trī~llokānpapāta dharaṇītale brahmā tena rathenātha sāgarāṁtāṁ vasundharām
"-- growing ever fuller, nourishing the three worlds, fell down upon the earth. Then Brahmā, with that chariot, of the earth bounded by the ocean --"
Verse 71 (skanda.5.28.71)
triḥsaptakṛtvo'tiśayāccakārābdhipradakṣiṇam tasya tatpatitaṁ tejo vyāsa somasya śītalam
"-- circumambulated the ocean twenty-one times, in excess of the usual rite. That fallen splendour of Soma, O Vyāsa, cool as it was --"
Verse 72 (skanda.5.28.72)
tadevauṣadhayo divyā jātā bhuvi sunirmalāḥ yābhirdhāryo hyayaṁ lokaḥ prajāścaiva caturvidhāḥ
"-- became the divine, utterly pure herbs that arose upon the earth, by which this world and the fourfold classes of creatures are sustained."
Verse 73 (skanda.5.28.73)
tuṣṭo'tha bhagavānsomo jagateḥ sarvadā mune daśavarṣasahasrāṇi tepe'tiduḥsahaṁ tapaḥ
Then the Lord Soma, pleased that he now sustained the world forever, O sage, practised an unbearable austerity for ten thousand years.
Verse 74 (skanda.5.28.74)
tatastasmai dadau vākyaṁ brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ bījauṣadhāni viprāṇāṁ somo rājā babhūva ha
Then Brahmā, the Grandsire of the worlds, spoke a word to him: by which Soma became the king of the seed-herbs and of the brāhmaṇas.
Verse 75 (skanda.5.28.75)
saptaviṁśatiṁ somāya dākṣāyaṇīrmahāvratāḥ patnīḥ prācetaso dakṣo dadau nakṣatrasaṁjñakāḥ
Dakṣa, son of Pracetas, gave to Soma his twenty-seven daughters, the Dākṣāyaṇīs of great vows, as wives, each designated by the name of a lunar asterism.
Verse 76 (skanda.5.28.76)
sa tatprāpya mahadrājyaṁ somo bhāryāyutastadā samārebhe rājasūyaṁ sahasraśatadakṣiṇam
Having thus obtained a great kingdom, Soma, together with his wives, then undertook a rājasūya sacrifice with a hundred thousand gifts as sacrificial fee.
Verse 77 (skanda.5.28.77)
hotā ca bhagavānatriradhvaryurbhagavānbhṛguḥ hiraṇyagarbhaścodgātā brahmā brahmatvameyivān
The Lord Atri was the hotṛ priest, the Lord Bhṛgu the adhvaryu; Hiraṇyagarbha was the udgātṛ, and Brahmā took upon himself the office of brahman-priest.
Verse 78 (skanda.5.28.78)
sadasyo bhagavānviṣṇuḥ sanakādimukhairyutaḥ dadau sa dakṣiṇāṁ somastrī~llokānsusamāhitaḥ
The Lord Viṣṇu, together with Sanaka and the others, was the sadasya; and Soma, with composed mind, gave the three worlds themselves as sacrificial fee.
Verse 79 (skanda.5.28.79)
sinīvālī kuhūścaiva dhṛtiḥ puṣṭiḥ prabhā vasuḥ kīrtirdhṛtiśca lakṣmīstaṁ devyo divyāḥ siṣevire
Sinīvālī and Kuhū, Dhṛti, Puṣṭi, Prabhā, Vasu, Kīrti, Dhṛti, and Lakṣmī — these divine goddesses attended upon him.
Verse 80 (skanda.5.28.80)
prāpyāvabhṛthamavyagraḥ sarvadevarṣipūjitaḥ atīva rājate candro daśadhā bhāsayandiśaḥ
Having performed the concluding bath of the sacrifice, undisturbed, honoured by all gods and sages, the Moon shone forth exceedingly, illuminating the directions.
Verse 81 (skanda.5.28.81)
tasya tatprāpya duṣprāpyamaiśvaryamṛṣisaṁskṛtam vibabhrāma matirvyāsa vinayādyamapāsya ca
Having obtained that hard-to-obtain lordship, consecrated by the sages, O Vyāsa, his mind, casting off humility and restraint, went astray.
Verse 82 (skanda.5.28.82)
bṛhaspatestadā bhāryāṁ tārānāmnīṁ yaśasvinīm jahāra tamasā sādhvīmavamānyāṁ giraḥsutam
He then abducted, through stealth, Bṛhaspati's wife, the illustrious and virtuous Tārā, showing disrespect to the son of Girā.
Verse 83 (skanda.5.28.83)
vācyamānastadā somo devadevarṣibhistathā naiva vyasarjayattārāṁ tasmā āṁgirasāya ca
Though then admonished by the gods and divine sages, Soma still would not give Tārā back to that son of Aṅgiras.
Verse 84 (skanda.5.28.84)
bṛhaspatestataḥ pakṣaṁ śakro jagrāha kopataḥ sa hi śiṣyo mahātejā guroḥ pūrvaṁ vṛhaspateḥ
Then Śakra, out of anger, took the side of Bṛhaspati; for he, of great splendour, had formerly been the disciple of the teacher Bṛhaspati.
Verse 85 (skanda.5.28.85)
tato yuddhamabhūttatra sughoraṁ śakrasomayoḥ devānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca vyāsa trāsakaraṁ mahat
Then a very terrible battle occurred there between Śakra and Soma, O Vyāsa, a great one causing terror to gods and dānavas alike.
Verse 86 (skanda.5.28.86)
sarve bhītāstato devā brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ agrato brahmaṇo yuddhaṁ kathitaṁ śakrasomayoḥ
All the gods, terrified, took refuge with Brahmā; the battle between Śakra and Soma was reported before Brahmā.
Verse 87 (skanda.5.28.87)
devānāṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā sārddhaṁ devaiḥ pitāmahaḥ āgatya yuddhabhūmiṁ so'vārayaddevadānavān
Hearing the word of the gods, the Grandsire, together with the gods, came to the battlefield and restrained the gods and dānavas.
Verse 88 (skanda.5.28.88)
vāritāste sthitāstatra yuddhaṁ tyaktvā surāsurāḥ tārāmādāya sa tadā dadā vāṁgirase dvije
Restrained, the gods and asuras stood still there, abandoning the battle; and Brahmā then, taking Tārā, gave her back to the twice-born son of Aṅgiras.
Verse 89 (skanda.5.28.89)
Seeing her pregnant, Bṛhaspati said to his wife: "This child must in no way be borne within my lineage."
Verse 90 (skanda.5.28.90)
utsasarja tatastārā kumāraṁ devarūpiṇam iṣīkāstraṁ samāsādya jvalaṁtamiva pāvakam
Then Tārā brought forth the boy, godlike in form, radiant like a blazing fire.
Verse 91 (skanda.5.28.91)
sa tejo jātamātro'pi devānāmākṣipacchiśuḥ tataḥ saṁśayamāpannā ūcustārāṁ divaukasaḥ
That child, though but just born, was so radiant that his splendour overpowered the very sight of the gods. Then the dwellers of heaven, seized with doubt, said to Tārā --
Verse 92 (skanda.5.28.92)
kasyāyaṁ brūhi subhage somasyātha bṛhaspateḥ nācacakṣe tu devānāṁ vedhāḥ papraccha tāṁ punaḥ

Verse 93 (skanda.5.28.93)
yadatra satyaṁ tadbrūhi tāre kasya suto hyayam sā prāṁjaliruvācedaṁ brahmāṇaṁ varadaṁ vibhum
"'-- O Tārā, tell the truth of the matter — whose son is this?' With joined palms she spoke this to the mighty, boon-granting Brahmā --"

Verse 95 (skanda.5.28.95)
budha ityakaronnāma tasya putrasya vai tadā paradārāpahārācca yatpāpaṁ tena duḥsaham

"-- Soma quickly came to Avantī, desiring to behold the god. On Monday, at Somavatī, at the conjunction with the new moon, self-controlled --"
Verse 98 (skanda.5.28.98)
snātvā saṁpūjayāmāsa somaḥ someśvaraṁ tataḥ tasya bhaktyā ca santuṣṭaḥ prāha somaṁ mahe śvaraḥ
"-- Soma bathed and then worshipped Someśvara. Pleased by his devotion, Maheśvara spoke to Soma --"
Verse 99 (skanda.5.28.99)
matprasādādvapuḥ kāṁtaṁ tava soma bhaviṣyati someśvaramiti khyātaṁ bhuktipradāyakam

evaṁ vyāsa tu tattīrthaṁ liṁgaṁ caivāti durlabham kathitaṁ tathyabhāvena mayā tuṣṭena sāṁpratam
Thus, O Vyāsa, that ford and that most rare liṅga have now been truthfully told by me, well pleased to do so.
Verse 101 (skanda.5.28.101)
śrāvaṇaṁ prāpya yo māsaṁ somanāthaṁ jiteṁdriyaḥ nityaṁ paśyennaro vyāsa tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu
O Vyāsa, hear the meritorious fruit of the man who, self-controlled, during the month of Śrāvaṇa, ever beholds Somanātha.
Verse 102 (skanda.5.28.102)
saurāṣṭre somanāthasya pūjāyāḥ pratyahaṁ phalam labhate sa naro vyāsa nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
O Vyāsa, that man obtains, day after day, the fruit of worshipping Somanātha in Saurāṣṭra — no doubt need be entertained about this.
