The Greatness of Agni Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.282.1)

मार्कण्डेय उवाच। ततो गच्छेत्तु राजेन्द्र अग्नितीर्थमनुत्तमम् । तत्र स्नात्वा तु पक्षादौ मुच्यते सर्वकिल्बिषैः ।

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchet tu rājendra agnitīrtham anuttamam| tatra snātvā tu pakṣādau mucyate sarvakilbiṣaiḥ||

Markandeya said: Thereafter, O king of kings, one should go to the unsurpassed Agni Tirtha. Bathing there at the start of the lunar fortnight, one is freed from all sins.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.282.2)

तत्र तीर्थे तु यः कन्यां दद्यात्स्वयमलंकृताम् । तस्य यत्फलमुद्दिष्टं तच्छृणुष्व नरोत्तम ।

tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ kanyāṁ dadyāt svayam alaṅkṛtām| tasya yat phalam uddiṣṭaṁ tac chṛṇuṣva narottama||

O best of men, hear what fruit is declared for one who, at that tirtha, gives away in marriage a daughter whom he has himself adorned.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.282.3)

अग्निष्टोमातिरात्राभ्यां शतं शतगुणीकृतम् । प्राप्नोति पुरुषो दत्त्वा यथाशक्त्या ह्यलंकृताम् ।

agniṣṭomātirātrābhyāṁ śataṁ śataguṇīkṛtam| prāpnoti puruṣo dattvā yathāśaktyā hy alaṅkṛtām||

A man who gives away a daughter, adorned according to his means, obtains a hundred times a hundredfold the fruit of the Agnishtoma and Atiratra sacrifices.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.282.4)

तस्याः पुत्रप्रपौत्राणां या भवेद्रोमसंगतिः । स याति तेन मानेन शिवलोके परां गतिम् ।

tasyāḥ putraprapautrāṇāṁ yā bhaved romasaṅgatiḥ| sa yāti tena mānena śivaloke parāṁ gatim||

As many as are the body-hairs of her sons and great-grandsons, by that same measure he attains the highest state in the world of Shiva.
