The Greatness of Bhrikuteshvara Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.283.1)

मार्कण्डेय उवाच। ततो गच्छेत्तु राजेन्द्र भृकुटेश्वरमुत्तमम् । यत्र सिद्धो महाभागो भृगुः परमकोपनः ।

mārkaṇḍeya uvāca| tato gacchet tu rājendra bhṛkuṭeśvaram uttamam| yatra siddho mahābhāgo bhṛguḥ paramakopanaḥ||

Markandeya said: Thereafter, O king of kings, one should go to the excellent Bhrikuteshvara, where the greatly fortunate Bhrigu, exceedingly quick to anger, attained perfection.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.283.2)

तेन वर्षशतं साग्रं तपश्चीर्णं पुरानघ । पुत्रार्थं वरयामास पुत्रं पुत्रवतां वरः ।

tena varṣaśataṁ sāgraṁ tapaś cīrṇaṁ purānagha| putrārthaṁ varayāmāsa putraṁ putravatāṁ varaḥ||

O sinless one, by him austerity was practised for more than a hundred years of old; he, best among those blessed with sons, sought a son through that boon.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.283.3)

वरो दत्तो महाभाग देवेनान्धकघातिना । तत्र तीर्थे तु यः स्नात्वा पूजयेत्परमेश्वरम् ।

varo datto mahābhāga devenāndhakaghātinā| tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ snātvā pūjayet parameśvaram||

O greatly fortunate one, the boon was granted by the god who slew Andhaka. Whoever bathes at that tirtha and worships Parameshvara...

Verse 4 (skanda.5.283.4)

अग्निष्टोमस्य यज्ञस्य फलमष्टगुणं लभेत् । भृकुटेशं तु यः कश्चिद्घृतेन मधुना सह ।

agniṣṭomasya yajñasya phalam aṣṭaguṇaṁ labhet| bhṛkuṭeśaṁ tu yaḥ kaścid ghṛtena madhunā saha||

...obtains eightfold the fruit of the Agnishtoma sacrifice. Whoever bathes Bhrikutesha with ghee together with honey...

Verse 5 (skanda.5.283.5)

पुत्रार्थी स्नापयेद्भक्त्या स लभेत्पुत्रमीप्सितम् । तत्र तीर्थे तु यः स्नात्वा दद्याद्विप्राय काञ्चनम् ।

putrārthī snāpayed bhaktyā sa labhet putram īpsitam| tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ snātvā dadyād viprāya kāñcanam||

...devotedly, desiring a son, obtains the desired son. Whoever bathes at that tirtha and gives gold to a brahmin...

Verse 6 (skanda.5.283.6)

गोदानं वा महीं वापि तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु ।

godānaṁ vā mahīṁ vāpi tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu||

...or gives a cow, or land - hear the meritorious fruit of that.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.283.7)

ससमुद्रगुहा तेन सशैलवनकानना । दत्ता पृथ्वी न सन्देहस्तेन सर्वा नृपोत्तम ।

sasamudraguhā tena saśailavanakānanā| dattā pṛthvī na sandehas tena sarvā nṛpottama||

O best of kings, without doubt, by him the entire earth, with its oceans, caves, mountains, forests and groves, has been given away.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.283.8)

तेन दानेन स स्वर्गे क्रीडयित्वा यथासुखम् । मर्त्ये भवति राजेन्द्रो ब्राह्मणो वा सुपूजितः ।

tena dānena sa svarge krīḍayitvā yathāsukham| martye bhavati rājendro brāhmaṇo vā supūjitaḥ||

By that gift, having sported happily in heaven, he becomes, upon returning to the mortal world, a great king or a highly honoured brahmin.
