The Greatness of Samvaureshvara Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.319.1)

ततो गच्छेन्महाराज सांवौरं तीर्थमुत्तमम्। यत्र संनिहितो भानुः पूज्यमानः सुरासुरैः॥

tato gacchenmahārāja sāṁvauraṁ tīrthamuttamam| yatra saṁnihito bhānuḥ pūjyamānaḥ surāsuraiḥ||

Shri Markandeya said: O great king, thereafter one should go to the excellent Samvaura tirtha, where the Sun-god, worshipped by gods and demons, is directly present.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.319.2)

तत्र ये पङ्गुतां प्राप्ताः शीर्णघ्राणनखा नराः। दद्रुमण्डलभिन्नाङ्गा मक्षिकाकृमिसंकुलाः॥

tatra ye paṅgutāṁ prāptāḥ śīrṇaghrāṇanakhā narāḥ| dadrumaṇḍalabhinnāṅgā makṣikākṛmisaṁkulāḥ||

There, men who are lame, whose noses and nails have decayed, whose limbs are broken out with rings of ringworm, and who swarm with flies and worms,

Verse 3 (skanda.5.319.3)

मातापितृभ्यां रहिता भ्रातृभार्याविवर्जिताः। अनाथा विकला व्यङ्गा मग्ना ये दुःखसागरे॥

mātāpitṛbhyāṁ rahitā bhrātṛbhāryāvivarjitāḥ| anāthā vikalā vyaṅgā magnā ye duḥkhasāgare||

who are bereft of mother and father, deprived of brother and wife, orphaned, disabled, and maimed, sunk in an ocean of sorrow -

Verse 4 (skanda.5.319.4)

तेषां नाथो जगद्योनिर्नर्मदातटमाश्रितः। सांवौरनाथो लोकानामार्तिहा दुःखनाशनः॥

teṣāṁ nātho jagadyonirnarmadātaṭamāśritaḥ| sāṁvauranātho lokānāmārtihā duḥkhanāśanaḥ||

- their lord, the source of the world, dwelling on the bank of the Narmada, is Samvaura-natha, remover of affliction and destroyer of the sorrow of all beings.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.319.5)

तत्र तीर्थे तु यः स्नात्वा मासमेकं निरन्तरम्। पूजयेद्भास्करं देवं तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु॥

tatra tīrthe tu yaḥ snātvā māsamekaṁ nirantaram| pūjayedbhāskaraṁ devaṁ tasya puṇyaphalaṁ śṛṇu||

Hear the meritorious fruit of one who, having bathed at that tirtha, worships the god Bhaskara continuously for a month.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.319.6)

यत्फलं चोत्तरे पार्थ तथा वै पूर्वसागरे। दक्षिणे पश्चिमे स्नात्वा तत्र तीर्थे तु तत्फलम्॥

yatphalaṁ cottare pārtha tathā vai pūrvasāgare| dakṣiṇe paścime snātvā tatra tīrthe tu tatphalam||

O Partha, whatever fruit is obtained by bathing in the northern ocean, the eastern ocean, the southern, and the western - that same fruit is obtained by bathing at that tirtha.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.319.7)

कौमारे यौवने पापं वार्द्धके यच्च संचितम्। तत्प्रणश्यति सांवौरे स्नानमात्रान्न संशयः॥

kaumāre yauvane pāpaṁ vārddhake yacca saṁcitam| tatpraṇaśyati sāṁvaure snānamātrānna saṁśayaḥ||

Sin accumulated in childhood, in youth, and in old age - that is destroyed at Samvaura by bathing alone, without doubt.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.319.8)

न व्याधिर्नैव दारिद्र्यं न चैवेष्टवियोजनम्। सप्तजन्मानि राजेन्द्र सांवौरपरिसेवनात्॥

na vyādhirnaiva dāridryaṁ na caiveṣṭaviyojanam| saptajanmāni rājendra sāṁvauraparisevanāt||

O lord of kings, through devotion to Samvaura, for seven births there is neither disease, nor poverty, nor separation from loved ones.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.319.9)

सप्तम्यामुपवासेन तद्दिने चाप्युपोषिते। स तत्फलमवाप्नोति तत्र स्नात्वा न संशयः॥

saptamyāmupavāsena taddine cāpyupoṣite| sa tatphalamavāpnoti tatra snātvā na saṁśayaḥ||

By fasting on the seventh, and, still fasting, bathing there that same day, he obtains without doubt that fruit.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.319.10)

रक्तचन्दनमिश्रेण यदर्घ्येण फलं स्मृतम्। तत्र तीर्थे नृपश्रेष्ठ स्नात्वा तत्फलमाप्नुयात्॥

raktacandanamiśreṇa yadarghyeṇa phalaṁ smṛtam| tatra tīrthe nṛpaśreṣṭha snātvā tatphalamāpnuyāt||

O best of kings, the fruit declared for offering an oblation mixed with red sandalwood - that fruit is obtained by bathing at that tirtha.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.319.11)

नर्मदासलिलं रम्यं सर्वपातकनाशनम्। निरीक्षितं विशेषेण सांवौरेण महात्मना॥

narmadāsalilaṁ ramyaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam| nirīkṣitaṁ viśeṣeṇa sāṁvaureṇa mahātmanā||

The lovely water of the Narmada, destroyer of all sin, is especially watched over by the great soul Samvaura.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.319.12)

ते धन्यास्ते महात्मानस्तेषां जन्म सुजीवितम्। स्नात्वा पश्यन्ति देवेशं सांवौरेश्वरमुत्तमम्॥

te dhanyāste mahātmānasteṣāṁ janma sujīvitam| snātvā paśyanti deveśaṁ sāṁvaureśvaramuttamam||

Blessed are they, great souls are they, and fruitful is their birth and life, who, having bathed, behold the excellent lord of gods, Samvaureshvara.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.319.13)

सूर्यलोके वसेत्तावद्यावदाभूतसम्प्लवम्॥

sūryaloke vasettāvadyāvadābhūtasamplavam||

They dwell in the realm of the Sun until the dissolution of the universe.
