The Greatness of Siddheshvara Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.320.1)

नर्मदादक्षिणे कूले सिद्धेश्वरमिति श्रुतम्। तीर्थं परं महाराज सिद्धैः कृतमिति प्रभो॥

narmadādakṣiṇe kūle siddheśvaramiti śrutam| tīrthaṁ paraṁ mahārāja siddhaiḥ kṛtamiti prabho||

Shri Markandeya said: O lord, great king, on the southern bank of the Narmada is heard of a supreme tirtha named Siddheshvara, said to have been made by the siddhas.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.320.2)

तत्र तीर्थं महापुण्यं सर्वतीर्थेषु पावनम्। नर्मदाया महाराज दक्षिणं कूलमाश्रितम्॥

tatra tīrthaṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ sarvatīrtheṣu pāvanam| narmadāyā mahārāja dakṣiṇaṁ kūlamāśritam||

O great king, that tirtha is greatly meritorious, holy among all tirthas, situated on the southern bank of the Narmada.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.320.3)

तत्र तीर्थे नरः स्नात्वा तर्पयेत्पितृदेवताः। श्राद्धं तत्रैव यो दद्यात्पितॄनुद्दिश्य भारत॥

tatra tīrthe naraḥ snātvā tarpayetpitṛdevatāḥ| śrāddhaṁ tatraiva yo dadyātpitṝnuddiśya bhārata||

Having bathed at that tirtha, a man should offer libations to ancestors and gods. O Bharata, whoever performs a shraddha there, dedicated to the ancestors,

Verse 4 (skanda.5.320.4)

तृप्यन्ति पितरस्तस्य द्वादशाब्दान्न संशयः। तत्र तीर्थे तु यो भक्त्या स्नात्वा पूजयते शिवम्॥

tṛpyanti pitarastasya dvādaśābdānna saṁśayaḥ| tatra tīrthe tu yo bhaktyā snātvā pūjayate śivam||

- his ancestors, without doubt, are satisfied for twelve years. He who, at that tirtha, having bathed with devotion, worships Shiva,

Verse 5 (skanda.5.320.5)

रात्रौ जागरणं कृत्वा पठेत्पौराणिकीं कथाम्। ततः प्रभाते विमले स्नानं कुर्याद्यथाविधि॥

rātrau jāgaraṇaṁ kṛtvā paṭhetpaurāṇikīṁ kathām| tataḥ prabhāte vimale snānaṁ kuryādyathāvidhi||

- keeping a night-vigil, should recite a Puranic tale, and then, at dawn, should bathe duly in the clear water,

Verse 6 (skanda.5.320.6)

वीक्षते गिरिजाकान्तं स गच्छेत्परमां गतिम्। पुरा सिद्धा महाभागाः कपिलाद्या महर्षयः॥

vīkṣate girijākāntaṁ sa gacchetparamāṁ gatim| purā siddhā mahābhāgāḥ kapilādyā maharṣayaḥ||

- and behold Girijakanta (Shiva); he attains the supreme state. Formerly, the illustrious great sages, beginning with Kapila -

Verse 7 (skanda.5.320.7)

जपन्तश्च परं ब्रह्म योगसिद्धा महाव्रताः। सिद्धिं ते परमां प्राप्ता नर्मदायाः प्रभावतः॥

japantaśca paraṁ brahma yogasiddhā mahāvratāḥ| siddhiṁ te paramāṁ prāptā narmadāyāḥ prabhāvataḥ||

- reciting the supreme Brahman, great in vows, accomplished in yoga, attained the supreme perfection through the power of the Narmada.
