Avanti Khanda · Chapter 32
Arjuna's Hymn of Praise, in the Glory of Naraditya
Verse 1 (skanda.5.32.1)
sanatkumāra uvāca athānyatsaṁpravakṣyāmi narādityaṁ divākaram yasya darśanamātreṇa sarvarogairvimucyate
Sanatkumāra said: "Now I shall declare another, Narāditya, the sun-god; by the mere sight of whom, one is freed from all diseases."
Verse 2 (skanda.5.32.2)
sthāpanāṁ te pravakṣyāmi narādityasya yādṛśī yuddhe nivārite tasminraktasvedajayoḥ purā
I shall declare to you how the establishment of Narāditya came about — when, of old, a battle was averted, that between Rakta and Svedaja.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.32.3)
naranārāyaṇau devāvavatīrṇau dharātale kuṁtyāṁ devyāṁ ca devakyāṁ mathurāyāmajāyatām
The two gods Nara and Nārāyaṇa descended upon the earth; they were born to the goddess Kuntī and to Devakī, in Mathurā.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.32.4)
evaṁ tau vartitau loke kāṁtau vṛddhiṁ parāṁ gatau anyasmātkāraṇātkṛṣṇo 'nyasmājjāto dhanaṁjayaḥ
Thus the two of them, lovely, lived in the world and attained supreme growth; from one cause Kṛṣṇa was born, from another Dhanañjaya.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.32.5)
kaṁsādīndānavānsarvānnijaghāna raṇe hi saḥ svargaṁ gatastataḥ pārtho vāsavādastrasiddhaye
He slew in battle Kaṃsa and all the other dānavas. Then Pārtha went to heaven, to obtain from Vāsava the perfection of weapons.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.32.6)
kṛtāstreṇa tu vīreṇa devarājasya dakṣiṇā saṁstutā devarājastu yayāce tāṁ hi dakṣiṇām
When the hero had mastered the weapons, a fee for the king of gods was proposed; and the king of gods asked for that very fee.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.32.7)
nivātakavacā hyugrā hiraṇyapuravāsinaḥ vadhyaṁtāmarjuna kṣiprameṣā me gurudakṣiṇā
"'Let the fierce Nivātakavacas, dwellers of Hiraṇyapura, be quickly slain, O Arjuna — this is my teacher's fee.'"
Verse 8 (skanda.5.32.8)
arjunena pratijñāto vadhasteṣāṁ durātmanām aiṁdraṁ sa rathamāsthāya gṛhītvā saśaraṁ dhanuḥ
Arjuna vowed the slaying of those evil-souled ones; mounting Indra's chariot and taking up his bow together with arrows --
Verse 9 (skanda.5.32.9)
nihatya tāṁstataḥ pārthaḥ kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram prītimutpādayāmāsa sarveṣāṁ ca divaukasām
"-- having slain them, Pārtha, having accomplished that most difficult deed, brought forth delight in all the dwellers of heaven."
Verse 10 (skanda.5.32.10)
kṛtakāryaṁ tadā śakrastvarjunaṁ vākyamabravīt yatte'bhiruciraṁ vīra mṛtyuloke sudurlabham
Then Śakra spoke this word to Arjuna, his task accomplished: "O hero, whatever pleases you, though most hard to attain in the mortal world --"
Verse 11 (skanda.5.32.11)
manasā kāṁkṣitaṁ pārtha varaṁ tvaṁ varayottamam sa vavre pratime dve tu ye'rcite brahmaṇā svayam
"'-- whatever your heart desires, O Pārtha, choose that supreme boon.' He chose two images, which had been worshipped by Brahmā himself."
Verse 12 (skanda.5.32.12)
brahmaṇā prītiyuktena dakṣāya pratipādite dakṣeṇāpi yugaṁ sāgraṁ pūjite timirāpahe
Given by Brahmā, filled with affection, to Dakṣa; and worshipped by Dakṣa too for a full age and more — icons of the dispeller of darkness.
Verse 13 (skanda.5.32.13)
surāṇāmasurāṇāṁ ca vigrahe samupasthite dānavairnirjitaḥ śakro hṛtarājyo vanaṁ gataḥ
When a conflict had arisen between the gods and the asuras, Śakra, defeated by the dānavas, his kingdom taken, went into the forest.
Verse 14 (skanda.5.32.14)
tapaścacāra durdharṣamekapādaḥ śatakratuḥ divyavarṣasahasraṁ tu dhiṣaṇastaṁ dadarśa ha
The performer of a hundred sacrifices practised a formidable austerity, standing on one foot, for a thousand divine years; and the wise one beheld him.
Verse 15 (skanda.5.32.15)
dṛṣṭvā tu devarājaṁ taṁ bṛhaspatiruvāca ha hitvā tridivamāyātaḥ kathaṁ śakra tvidaṁ vanam
Seeing that king of gods, Bṛhaspati said: "Having abandoned heaven, how have you come to this forest, O Śakra?"
Verse 16 (skanda.5.32.16)
ekākinā vanasthena na sādhyāḥ śatravastvayā jñātvaivaṁ devarāja tvaṁ śīghraṁ dakṣāśramaṁ vraja
"'Alone, dwelling in the forest, your enemies cannot be overcome by you. Knowing this, O king of gods, go quickly to the hermitage of Dakṣa.'"
Verse 17 (skanda.5.32.17)
pūjārthe brahmaṇā datte pārijātasamudbhave cakāra viśvakarmā ye te yācasva prajāpatim
"'For the sake of worship, there are those two icons given by Brahmā, arisen from the Pārijāta; which Viśvakarmā made — beg these of the Lord of creatures.'"
Verse 18 (skanda.5.32.18)

"'-- And the destruction of your enemies shall come about by the grace of worshipping these two icons.' By that word of his teacher, the god of a hundred sacrifices was delighted."
Verse 19 (skanda.5.32.19)
jagāma satvarastatra yatra dakṣaḥ prajāpatiḥ vinayāvanato bhūtvā yayāce pratime śubhe
He went swiftly to where Dakṣa, Lord of creatures, was; and, bowing in humility, he begged for the two auspicious icons.
Verse 20 (skanda.5.32.20)
pūjite pratime vyāsa śakreṇa śaradāṁ śatam tayostu tejasā sarve vināśaṁ dānavā gatāḥ
O Vyāsa, the two icons were worshipped by Śakra for a hundred autumns; and by their splendour, all the dānavas met destruction.

pratime cocutuḥ śakraṁ varayasva varottamam bhaktyānayā paraṁ tuṣṭāvāvāṁ jānīhi vāsava
