vyāsa uvāca mahākālaṁ kimarthaṁ tu kiṁ vā śivapadaṁ smṛtam koṭīśvaraṁ kimarthaṁ tu pāvakaṁ tatkimucyate

Vyāsa said: "Why is Mahākāla so called, or why is Śivapada remembered by that name? Why Koṭīśvara, and why is that ford called Pāvaka?"

Verse 2 (skanda.5.36.2)

naradīpaṁ kimarthaṁ tu dvitīyā vaṭamātaraḥ abhayeśvaraṁ kimarthaṁ tu śaṁkhoddhā raṇameva ca

"Why Naradīpa, and why are they called the second Vaṭamātaras? Why Abhayeśvara, and why Śaṅkhoddhāraṇa?"

Verse 3 (skanda.5.36.3)

śūleśvaraṁ kimarthaṁ tu kimoṁkārastu kathyate dhūtapāpaṁ kimarthaṁ tu kimaṁgāreśvaraṁ tathā

"Why Śūleśvara, and why is that place called Oṃkāra? Why Dhūtapāpa, and likewise why Aṅgāreśvara?"

Verse 4 (skanda.5.36.4)

purī cojjayinī divyā saptakalpā kathaṁ smṛtā kathayasva muniśreṣṭha tasyā nāmāni yāni ca

"And why is the divine city Ujjayinī remembered as having endured through seven kalpas? O best of sages, tell me also its various names."

Verse 5 (skanda.5.36.5)

sanatkumāra uvāca śṛṇu vyāsa yathā khyātā purī divyā kuśa sthalī nāmataḥ karmataḥ śreṣṭhā saptakalpānuvāsinī

Sanatkumāra said: "Listen, O Vyāsa, how the divine city Kuśasthalī became renowned — supreme in name and in deed, dwelt in continuously through seven kalpas."

Verse 6 (skanda.5.36.6)

prākkalpe svarṇaśṛṁgākhyā dvitīye tu kuśasthalī tṛtīye'vaṁtikā proktā caturthetvamarā vatī

"In the first kalpa it was called Svarṇaśṛṅgā; in the second, Kuśasthalī; in the third it is declared Avantikā; in the fourth, Amarāvatī."

Verse 7 (skanda.5.36.7)

vikhyātā pañcame kalpe purī cūḍāmaṇīti ca ṣaṣṭhe padmāvatī jñeyā saptame cojjayinī purī

"In the fifth kalpa the city was renowned as Cūḍāmaṇi; in the sixth it is to be known as Padmāvatī; and in the seventh, the city Ujjayinī."

Verse 8 (skanda.5.36.8)

punaraṁte tu kalpasya svarṇaśṛṅgādi kā smṛtā etāni sapta nāmāni prātarutthāya yaḥ paṭhet

"And again, at the end of the kalpa, it is remembered as starting again with Svarṇaśṛṅga. Whoever, rising at dawn, recites these seven names --"

Verse 9 (skanda.5.36.9)

saptajanmakṛtātpāpānmucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ ujjayinyāṁ purā rājā babhūva kila cāṁdhakaḥ

"-- is freed from sins committed across seven births — of this there is no doubt. In Ujjayinī, of old, there was indeed a king named Andhaka."

Verse 10 (skanda.5.36.10)

tasya putro mahāvīryo nāmnā kanakadānavaḥ yuddhārthaṁ sa mahāvīryaḥ śakraṁ yuddhe samāhvayat

His son, of great might, was the dānava named Kanaka. That mighty one challenged Śakra to battle for the sake of war.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.36.11)

krodhādiṁdreṇa saṁgrāme yudhya māno nipātitaḥ nihatya dānavaṁ śakro bhayādaṁdhāsurasya tu

Fighting in the battle, he was, in anger, struck down by Indra. Having slain the dānava, Śakra, out of fear of the asura Andhaka --

Verse 12 (skanda.5.36.12)

jagāma śaṁkarānveṣī kailāsaṁ śaṁkarālayam dṛṣṭvā praṇamya deveśaṁ caṁdrārdhakṛta śekharam

"-- went, seeking Śaṅkara, to Kailāsa, the abode of Śaṅkara. Having beheld and bowed to the Lord of gods, crowned with the half-moon --"

Verse 13 (skanda.5.36.13)

bhīto vijñāpayāmāsa sa cāśrvākulalocanaḥ abhayaṁ dehi me deva dānavādaṁdhakācca vai

"-- frightened, his eyes brimming with tears, he petitioned: 'Grant me freedom from fear, O god, of the dānava Andhaka.'"

Verse 14 (skanda.5.36.14)

śakrasyetthaṁ vacaḥ śrutvā śaraṇā gatavatsalaḥ dadāvabhayamevāsau mā bhaistvamaṁdhakāddhi vai

Hearing Śakra's words thus, Śiva, kind to those who take refuge, granted him fearlessness: "Do not fear Andhaka."

Verse 15 (skanda.5.36.15)

kṛtvā rūpaṁ mahādevo viśvarūpaṁ subhairavam sarpairlaladbhiratyugraistīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrairviṣolbaṇaiḥ

Assuming a universal, most terrifying form, Mahādeva, with darting, exceedingly fierce serpents, sharp-fanged and full of venom --

Verse 16 (skanda.5.36.16)

pātālodararūpaiśca bhairavārāvanādibhiḥ bhujairanekasāhasrairbahuśastradhṛtaistathā

"-- with forms like the depths of Pātāla, with terrifying roars, and with many thousands of arms, bearing many weapons --"

Verse 17 (skanda.5.36.17)

siṁhacarmaparīdhānaṁ vyāghratvaguttarīyakam gavājina kṛtāṭopaṁ caṁdrāgniravilocanam

"-- clad in a lion's hide, with a tiger-skin as upper garment, adorned with a cow-hide, with the moon, fire, and sun as his eyes --"

Verse 18 (skanda.5.36.18)

mahāmahīdhratulyābhyāṁ jaṁghābhyāṁ bhūṣitaṁ sadā kṣobhayaṁścālayansarvānpātālasya talāvadhi

"-- ever adorned with two shins like great mountains, agitating and shaking everything down to the very depths of Pātāla --"

Verse 19 (skanda.5.36.19)

īdṛgrūpaṁ vidhāyeśo danudaityabhayāvaham avātaranmahīṁ bhīmaḥ pādenaikena śaṁkaraḥ

"-- having assumed such a form, bringing terror to the Danu-daityas, the fearsome Śaṅkara descended upon the earth with a single foot."

Verse 20 (skanda.5.36.20)

tatraiva hi hrado jātaḥ sarvadaivatavaṁditaḥ khyātaṁ śivapadaṁ taddhi yatpadā''krāṁtavānvibhuḥ

There, indeed, a pool arose, revered by all the gods; that spot, trodden by the foot of the mighty one, became renowned as Śivapada.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.36.21)

pāpānāṁ ca purā koṭiḥ pādāṁguṣṭhena dāritā koṭitīrthamataḥ khyātaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam

A crore of sins were, of old, torn asunder by his great toe; hence Koṭitīrtha became renowned, the destroyer of all sins.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.36.22)

agastyena tathā koṭistīrthānāmavadhāritā ato'pīdaṁ śubhaṁ loke koṭitīrthaṁ sadā smṛtam

Likewise, a crore of fords were fixed in place there by Agastya; for this reason too, this auspicious Koṭitīrtha is ever remembered in the world.

Verse 23 (skanda.5.36.23)

dṛṣṭvā tu tridaśāḥ sarve snātā vai hitakāmyayā mahā kālakṛtaṁ rūpaṁ mahākālastataḥ smṛtaḥ

All the gods, beholding this, bathed there for the sake of their own welfare; and, having assumed that form in confronting great Time, he was thenceforth remembered as Mahākāla.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.36.24)

aṁdhāsuro'pi danujaḥ putraṁ śrutvā hataṁ yudhi krodhena tamasāviṣṭo raṇatūryāṇyavādayata

The dānava Andhaka too, hearing that his son had been slain in battle, possessed by anger and darkness, sounded the instruments of war.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.36.25)

sasainyo nirgataḥ prāpto yatra te tridaśāḥ sthitāḥ mahatyā senayā sārdhaṁ rathavāraṇayuktayā

He set out with his army and arrived where the gods were stationed, together with a great army equipped with chariots and elephants.

Verse 26 (skanda.5.36.26)

tadaiva dānavānvīkṣya mahāhavakṛtodyamān vepaṁtaste susaṁnaddhā śaṁbhuṁ śaraṇamāyayuḥ

Then, seeing the dānavas, prepared and eager for the great battle, they, trembling though well-armed, took refuge in Śambhu.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.36.27)

mā bhairiti mahākālo devānuktvā trilocanaḥ gṛhītvā śūlamātiṣṭhaddaṣṭādaṁṣṭrādharo ruṣā

"Fear not," said Mahākāla, the three-eyed one, to the gods; and, taking up his trident, he stood ready, his lip bitten with his fangs, in fury.

Verse 28 (skanda.5.36.28)

kopayukte virūpākṣe jvālābhiḥ pūritaṁ nabhaḥ aṁdhakenātha ruṣṭena śarakoṭistu duḥsahā

When the deformed-eyed one was filled with rage, the sky was filled with flames. Then, by the enraged Andhaka, an unbearable crore of arrows --

Verse 29 (skanda.5.36.29)

muktā jagāma devānāṁ nanāśa śalabhākṛti visphuliṁgārciṣaṁ vahniṁ muṁcamānaḥ pinākadhṛk

"-- was released and went toward the gods, but perished like locusts. The bearer of the Pināka, releasing fire with sparkling flames --"

Verse 30 (skanda.5.36.30)

śataśaḥ śakalīcakre taṁ ca bāṇairatāḍayat aṁdhako'pi hi yuddhasthaḥ śithilaḥ śithilā yudhaḥ

"-- shattered them into hundreds of fragments, and struck him with arrows. Andhaka too, standing in the battle, became slack, his weapons faltering."

Verse 31 (skanda.5.36.31)

niruddhaḥ śaṁbhunā bāṇairalibhiḥ paṁkajaṁ yathā tasya sainyaṁ praviddhaṁ ca tadgaṇairyudhi yodhibhiḥ

He was hemmed in by Śambhu's arrows, as a lotus by bees. His army was pierced through by Śiva's gaṇas, warriors fighting in that battle --

Verse 32 (skanda.5.36.32)

yodhavarairhatā divyaiḥ sthāṇu sānnidhyamāśritaiḥ tatoṁ'dhakena sainyaṁ svaṁ bhinnaṁ dṛṣṭvā tathāsuraiḥ

"-- struck down by the finest divine warriors, who had taken refuge in the presence of Sthāṇu. Then, seeing his own army thus broken, together with the other asuras --"

Verse 33 (skanda.5.36.33)

"-- and himself pierced by Maheśa with crores of arrows, his body torn apart, Andhaka, seized swiftly by fear --"

Verse 34 (skanda.5.36.34)

cakāra tāmasīṁ māyāṁ māyāśataviśāradaḥ tayāṁtarhitadeveśo jagāma diśamuttarām

"-- being skilled in a hundred illusions, wrought a dark illusion. By it, the Lord of gods, made invisible, went toward the northern quarter."

Verse 35 (skanda.5.36.35)

śaṁbhurbhītibharaṁ bibhradbabhrāma bhuvi bhinnahṛt yasminmārge gato devastena daityo jagāma ha

Śambhu, seeming to bear a burden of fear, his heart seemingly broken, wandered upon the earth; and by whatever path the god went, the daitya went there too.

Verse 36 (skanda.5.36.36)

vadanna dṛśyate kvāsau gato duṣṭaḥ punaḥpunaḥ uvāca cāṁdhakaḥ śabdaṁ tathovā ca maheśvaraḥ

Saying "Where has that wicked one gone, he is not seen," again and again, Andhaka spoke a word; and Maheśvara spoke likewise in reply.

Verse 37 (skanda.5.36.37)

tatra tīrthamathotpannaṁ vāgaṁdhakamabhiśrutam tatra snātvā śucirbhūtvā yo vai dadyātsaśarkaram

There a ford then arose, renowned as Vāgandhaka. He who, having bathed there and become pure, gives an offering together with sugar-crystals --

Verse 38 (skanda.5.36.38)

navamyāṁ mārgaśīrṣasya śuklāyāṁ śraddhayānvitaḥ akṣayaṁ tadbhaveddattaṁ dātā śivapuraṁ vrajet

"-- on the ninth of the bright fortnight of Mārgaśīrṣa, endowed with faith — that gift becomes imperishable, and the giver goes to Śivapura."

Verse 39 (skanda.5.36.39)

pitṛnuddiśya yatkiṁciddīyate bhaktitaḥ śive tṛptāstiṣṭhaṁti te tāvadyāvadābhūta saṁplavam

Whatever, however little, is given with devotion to Śiva, dedicated to the ancestors, by it they remain satisfied until the final dissolution of beings.

Verse 40 (skanda.5.36.40)

tamasā cchāditā devāḥ saṁbabhūvuḥ samākulāḥ saṁbhrāṁtamanasaḥ sarve na kiṁcidapi menire

The gods, covered by that darkness, became bewildered; all of them, their minds confused, could perceive nothing at all.

Verse 41 (skanda.5.36.41)

etasminnaṁtare vyāsa narādityaḥ svatejasā uttasthau nararūpeṇa kurvanvitimirā diśaḥ

In the meantime, O Vyāsa, Narāditya, by his own splendour, arose in human form, making the directions free of darkness.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.36.42)

naṣṭe tamasi daityepi prakāśa prakaṭe sati devā mudamavāpuste dṛṣṭvā naraṁ vilocanaiḥ

When the darkness had been destroyed, even in the presence of the daitya, and light had become manifest, the gods, beholding that man with their own eyes, obtained joy.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.36.43)

stuvaṁto vividhaiḥ stotrairnararūpaṁ divākaram uttasthau nararūpeṇa dīpto yasmāddivākaraḥ

They praised, with various hymns, the sun-god who had taken human form. Since Divākara arose radiant in human form --

tenāsya nāma te cakurnaradīpa itīśvarāḥ yaḥ paśyati naro bhaktyā naradīpaṁ divākaram

"-- the gods gave him the name Naradīpa. The man who beholds Naradīpa, the sun, with devotion --"

Verse 45 (skanda.5.36.45)

mucyate sarvapāpebhyo yadyapi brahmahā bhavet ṣaṣṭhyāmarkadine vipra saptamyāmupa vāsayet

"-- is freed from all sins, even were he a slayer of a brāhmaṇa. O brāhmaṇa, on the sixth, on Sunday, and on the seventh, one should fast."

Verse 46 (skanda.5.36.46)

dinacchidretha saṁkrāṁtau grahaṇe viṣuvatyatha kuṁḍe snātvā śucirbhūtvā japanniyatamānasaḥ

At a day's juncture, at a solstice, at an eclipse, or at the equinox, having bathed in the pool and become pure, reciting mantras with a disciplined mind --

Verse 47 (skanda.5.36.47)

naradīpaṁ naraḥ paśyetstotravā ditramaṁgalaiḥ gaṁdhairdhūpaistathā dīpairnaivedyaiḥ pūjayettathā

"-- a man should behold Naradīpa with hymns, musical instruments, and auspicious rites; and should worship him likewise with scents, incense, lamps, and food-offerings."

Verse 48 (skanda.5.36.48)

"With song and music going before, and prostrating with eight limbs, and performing circumambulation of the Sun, in the morning, at midday, or in the afternoon --"

Verse 49 (skanda.5.36.49)

sa muktaḥ sarvapāpaistu saptajanmakṛtairapi sūryakoṭipratīkāśairvimānaiḥ sārvakāmikaiḥ

"-- he is freed from all sins, even those committed across seven births; in wish-granting celestial cars resembling a crore of suns --"

Verse 50 (skanda.5.36.50)

sūryalokaṁ prayātyāśu yatsurairapi durlabham śakrātprāpya purā yasmādbhānuratra pratiṣṭhitaḥ

"-- he swiftly goes to the world of the Sun, hard to attain even for the gods. Since Bhānu was established here, having been obtained from Śakra of old --"

Verse 51 (skanda.5.36.51)

nareṇaiva prasādena naradīpastato hyayam tadaivāsya purā vyāsa yātrā śakreṇa nirmitā

"-- and by the grace of a man, he is thus called Naradīpa. O Vyāsa, at that very time, a pilgrimage-festival for him was established by Śakra of old."

Verse 52 (skanda.5.36.52)

āgamiṣyāmyahaṁ pārtha sārdhaṁ devaiḥ samāhitaḥ jyeṣṭhe site dvitīyāyāṁ naradīpe tu sarvadā

"[Indra said:] 'I shall come, O Pārtha, together with the gods, with composed mind, ever on the second of the bright fortnight of Jyeṣṭha, to Naradīpa.'"

Verse 53 (skanda.5.36.53)

tatrāhamāgato jñeyo loke devasya varṣaṇāt tato'naṁtaramāgatya devā ye tridaśālayāt

"'There I am to be known as having come, by the raining down that occurs at that time in the world.' Then, thereafter, having come from the abode of the thirty gods --"

Verse 54 (skanda.5.36.54)

dṛṣṭvā devaṁ tathārūḍhaṁ naradīpaṁ sudīpitam kṛtvā yātrāṁ ca te yāṁti devayānairitastataḥ

"-- having beheld the god thus mounted, Naradīpa, brightly shining, and having performed the pilgrimage-festival, they go here and there in their divine vehicles."

yaḥ paśyenmānavo bhaktyā naradīpaṁ rathasthitam sarvapāpavinirmuktaḥ sūryaloke mahīyate

The man who beholds, with devotion, Naradīpa seated in his chariot, freed from all sins, is honoured in the world of the Sun.

Verse 56 (skanda.5.36.56)
