Chapter 36All chaptersChapter 38

Verse 1 (skanda.5.37.1)

sanatkumāra uvāca| bhinne'ndhake triśūlena dhvanī rudrasya nirgataḥ| tatroṅkāraḥ samutpanno devadevo maheśvaraḥ||

Sanatkumara said: When Andhaka was pierced by the trident, a sound issued forth from Rudra; there arose the God of gods, Maheshvara, as Onkara.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.37.2)

tatra snātvā śucirbhūtvā samādhiniyamena ca| dṛṣṭvoṅkāraṁ mahādevaṁ mucyate sarvapātakaiḥ||

One who bathes there, becomes pure, and through the discipline of meditation beholds Mahadeva Onkara is freed from all sins.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.37.3)

hatvāndhakaṁ triśūlaśca bhogavatyā jale yayau| dṛṣṭvā śūlaṁ sutejaskaṁ hāṭako vismayaṁ gataḥ| papraccha kena kāryeṇa bhavāniha samāgataḥ||

Having slain Andhaka, the trident went into the waters of the Bhogavati; seeing the brilliant trident, Hataka was struck with wonder and asked, 'For what purpose have you come here?'

Verse 4 (skanda.5.37.4)

kathayāmāsa śūlosau śaṁkareṇāhamīritaḥ| aṁdhakasya vadhārthāya pāpavṛtteḥ sudurmateḥ||

The trident replied: 'I was sent by Shankara to slay Andhaka, who was wicked in conduct and evil-minded.'

Verse 5 (skanda.5.37.5)

bhittvā tamahamāyāto bhogavatyā jale śubhe| gamiṣyāmi punastatra yatra tiṣṭhati śaṁkaraḥ||

'Having pierced him, I have come into the auspicious waters of the Bhogavati; I shall now return to where Shankara dwells.'

Verse 6 (skanda.5.37.6)

śūloktaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā parameśadidṛkṣayā| hāṭakaḥ śūlamārgeṇa nirjagāma javena saḥ| bahuvaktrasamākīrṇaṁ suprabhaṁ sumanoramam||

Hearing the trident's words, and desiring to see the Supreme Lord, Hataka swiftly went forth by the trident's path, reaching that place adorned with many faces, radiant and lovely.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.37.7)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā tridaśāḥ sarve śūleśaṁ hāṭakeśvaram| praṇamya hṛṣṭaromāṇo yathā protphullapaṁkajam||

Seeing him, the lord of the trident, as Hatakeshvara, all the gods, their hair standing in joy like a fully-blossomed lotus, bowed before him.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.37.8)

tuṣṭuvurvividhaiḥ stotrairbrahmaviṣṇupurogamāḥ| hāṭakeśvaranāmāsītpātāle yo vyavasthitaḥ||

Led by Brahma and Vishnu, they praised him with various hymns; thus the deity established in Patala came to be named Hatakeshvara.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.37.9)

nirgataḥ śūlamārgeṇa tena śūleśvaraḥ smṛtaḥ| dhūtapāpaṁ ca yattīrthaṁ devadevasya cottare||

Because he emerged by the trident's path, he came to be called Shuleshvara; and to the north of this God of gods lies the tirtha named Dhutapapa.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.37.10)

tatra pāpaḥ sa daityeṁdro dhūtaḥ śūlena vīryavān| tena tīrthamidaṁ vyāsa dhūtapāpaṁ nigadyate||

There that sinful, mighty lord of the daityas was cleansed away by the trident; therefore, O Vyasa, this tirtha is called Dhutapapa.

Verse 11 (skanda.5.37.11)

aṣṭamyāṁ vā paurṇamāsyāṁ caturdaśyāṁ śanau tathā| upoṣya rajanīmekāṁ śivabhakto jiteṁdriyaḥ||

On the eighth lunar day, or the full moon, or the fourteenth, or on a Saturday, a self-controlled devotee of Shiva, having fasted for one night,

Verse 12 (skanda.5.37.12)

dhūtapāpaṁ tu yaḥ paśyeddevadevaṁ maheśvaram| vimuktaḥ sarvapāpaiḥ sa saptajanmakṛtairapi||

and who beholds Dhutapapa, the great God of gods, is freed from all sins, even those committed across seven births.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.37.13)

kulānāṁ śatamuddhṛtya śivalokaṁ ca gacchati| kṛtābhiṣekaṁ yaḥ paśyetpauṣe māsi sa vai naraḥ||

He redeems a hundred generations of his family and goes to Shiva's world; and the man who beholds the anointing performed [there] in the month of Pausha,

Verse 14 (skanda.5.37.14)

śūleśvaraprabhāvena mucyate brahmahatyayā| vimānānāṁ sahasreṇa mṛto yāti paraṁ padam||

is freed, by the power of Shuleshvara, even from the sin of killing a Brahmin; upon death he attains the highest abode borne by a thousand celestial chariots.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.37.15)

iti cāṁdhakaśūloyaṁ yāvadbhogavatīṁ gataḥ| tāvatsamutthitā ghorā asurā rudhirodbhavāḥ||

Thus, while this trident [that had slain] Andhaka had gone into the Bhogavati, terrible asuras born from his blood rose up.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.37.16)

khaḍgahastā mahāvīryā anekaśatasaṁkhyayā| caturdikṣu sthitairghorairhanyamāno maheśvaraḥ| siṁhanādaṁ mumocātha pīḍitastairdurātmabhiḥ||

Sword in hand, mighty in valor, in their hundreds, surrounding him on all four sides, these terrible ones struck at Maheshvara; hard-pressed by these wicked beings, he let out a lion's roar.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.37.17)

siṁhanādena te pāpā mūrchitāḥ patitā bhuvi| punaḥ samutthitā jagmurdevadevaṁ maheśvaram| vitrastāśca tato devā brahmaviṣṇupurogamāḥ||

By that lion's roar those sinful beings fell fainting to the ground; rising again, they advanced upon the God of gods, Maheshvara, at which the gods, led by Brahma and Vishnu, grew terrified.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.37.18)

asādhyāṁstāṁstathā matvā maṁtraṁ kṛtvā hitaiṣiṇaḥ| tato devā vicāryātha strīṁ sṛjāma iti svayam||

Judging them unconquerable, the well-wishing gods took counsel together, and after deliberation resolved: 'Let us ourselves create a female power.'

Verse 19 (skanda.5.37.19)

ityuktvotpādayāmāsa brahmā haṁsāsanāṁ śubhām| caturvaktrāṁ caturhastāṁ brahmāṇīṁ rūpadhāriṇīm||

Having said this, Brahma brought forth the auspicious goddess seated on a swan — four-faced and four-armed, in the form of Brahmani.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.37.20)

kumāraścaiva kaumārīṁ mayūravaravāhanām| raktamālyāmbaradharāṁ śaktikukkuṭadhāriṇīm||

And Kumara brought forth Kaumari, mounted on the finest peacock, clad in red garlands and garments, bearing a spear and a cock.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.37.21)

punaḥ kumāraḥ kaumārīṁ pakṣīṁdravaravāhanām| kṛṣṇāṁ karāladaśanāṁ dharmarājasya vāhanīm||

Then again another power arose, mounted on the king of birds, dark-hued, with fearsome teeth, riding upon the mount of Dharmaraja.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.37.22)

daityadehapramathanīṁ daṁḍamudgaradhāriṇīm| lalāṭalocanāṁ nīlāṁ kapālakarabhūṣitām||

A power arose that crushed the bodies of the daityas, bearing club and mace, with an eye on her forehead, dark-blue, her hand adorned with a skull.

Verse 23 (skanda.5.37.23)

siṁhājinadharāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ sarvabhūṣaṇabhūṣitām| kartrīhastāṁ khaḍgahastāṁ kheṭakhaṭvāṁgadhāriṇīm| carmāsthikeśavapuṣaṁ cāmuṇḍāmamṛjatprabhuḥ||

Clad in a lion's skin, dark, adorned with every ornament, holding knife and sword, bearing shield and skull-staff, her body of skin, bone and hair — thus the Lord fashioned Chamunda.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.37.24)

vaṭasya nikaṭe pūrvaṁ nirmitā lokamātaraḥ| tato loke suvikhyātāḥ pratyakṣā vaṭamātaraḥ||

These Mothers of the world were first fashioned near a banyan tree; thence they became renowned in the world, manifest, as the 'Banyan Mothers' (Vata-Matr).

Verse 25 (skanda.5.37.25)

tatra snātvā śucirbhūtvā mātṝḥ paśyati yo naraḥ| sa muktaḥ sarvapāpebhyo mātṛloke mahīyate||

A man who bathes there, becomes pure, and beholds the Mothers is freed from all sins and is honored in the world of the Mothers.

Verse 26 (skanda.5.37.26)

siṁhanādo'pi devena kṛto yatra mahāmune| tatra siṁheśvaro devaḥ sarvaduṣkṛtanāśanaḥ||

O great sage, where the god had made his lion-roar, there stands the deity Simheshvara, destroyer of all evil deeds.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.37.27)

darśanāttasya devasya siṁhavatsa balī bhavet| siṁhanāde kṛte yatra jātaṁ kaṇṭakitaṁ vapuḥ||

By the sight of that god one becomes as strong as a lion; and where, at that lion-roar, the body [of the gods] had bristled with goosebumps,

Verse 28 (skanda.5.37.28)

tatra kaṇṭeśvaro devo bhaktānāṁ sarvadaḥ sadā| tatra tīrthe naraḥ snātvā dṛṣṭvā kaṇṭeśvaraṁ śivam||

there stands the god Kanteshvara, ever the giver of all things to his devotees; a man who bathes at that tirtha and beholds Shiva Kanteshvara

Verse 29 (skanda.5.37.29)

grahabhūtapiśācebhyo na bhayaṁ prāpnuyātkvacit| tatastā mātaraḥ sarvā ādiṣṭāstu hareṇa vai||

never comes to feel fear from planetary spirits, ghosts or demons. Thereafter Hara gave a command to all those Mother-goddesses:

Verse 30 (skanda.5.37.30)

andhāsurasya raudrasya pibadhvaṁ rudhiraṁ drutam| etasminnantare vyāsa prajvalajjvalanopamaḥ||

'Quickly drink the blood of the terrible Andhakasura.' Meanwhile, O Vyasa, Indra approached Shankara, who blazed like fire.

Verse 31 (skanda.5.37.31)

abhayaṁ śakra mā bhaistvaṁ yatrovāceti śaṁkaraḥ| tatra liṁgaṁ samudbhūtamabhayeśvaramuttamam||

siṁhayuktena yānena śivalokaṁ sa gacchati| andhakasya tu yā māyā raktāsurasamudbhavā||

He journeys to Shiva's world in a chariot yoked with lions. Now, Andhaka's illusion, which brought forth blood-born demons [from every fallen drop],

Verse 35 (skanda.5.37.35)

mātṛbhiryudhyamānābhiḥ kṣayamāśu jagāma sā| devyaḥ pibantyo raktaughaṁ daiteyatanutaścyutam||

Verse 36 (skanda.5.37.36)

ṣaṭtṛptiṁ paramā jagmurna tu tṛptā lalāṭajā| hatamāyaḥ śiṣṭakastu bhinnaśūlatanucchadaḥ||

Six of them became fully satisfied, but the one born of the forehead was not satisfied; his illusion now destroyed, Andhaka remained, his body pierced by the trident.

Verse 37 (skanda.5.37.37)

āvantye viṣaye jāto lohitāṁgo dharāsutaḥ| aṁgārakastu raktākṣo mahādevasutastathā||

He was born in the land of Avanti, red-limbed, a son of the Earth; thus Angaraka, red-eyed, became the son of Mahadeva.

brahmaṇā sthāpitaṁ liṁgaṁ gaṇagaṁdharvasevitam| śucistatra ca yaḥ snāti naro hyaṁgāravāsare||

This linga was established by Brahma and is served by ganas and gandharvas; a man who, having purified himself, bathes there on Angara-vasara (Tuesday),

Verse 44 (skanda.5.37.44)

dṛṣṭvāṁgāreśvaraṁ sotha mucyate sarvapātakaiḥ| caturthyāṁ maṁgaladine nakte cārghyaṁ nivedayet||

and beholds Angareshvara is freed from all sins. On the fourth day falling on a Tuesday, at night, one should offer arghya.

Verse 45 (skanda.5.37.45)

This should be diligently performed until four such [Tuesday-Chaturthis] are complete; five water-jars should be prepared, together with a copper vessel.

Verse 46 (skanda.5.37.46)
