Avanti Khanda · Chapter 38
The Account of Andhaka
Verse 1 (skanda.5.38.1)
sanatkumāra uvāca| nāsti śeṣaṁ yadā raktaṁ pīyamānaṁ ca rakṣasaḥ| cāmuṇḍāyāstato raktamabhūdāsyaṁ ca bhāsuram||
Sanatkumara said: When no blood of the demon remained left to drink, Chamunda's mouth grew all the more blazing [with craving].
Verse 2 (skanda.5.38.2)
kṛṣṇaṁ kṛtāṁtakalpāṁtaṁ karāladaśanādharam| prajvalatyaṁdhake śāṁtaṁ jvalatkesaralocanam||
Black, like the very dissolution wrought by Death, with fearsome teeth and lips — while Andhaka still blazed, it remained still, its eyes glowing like flame.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.38.3)
ghoraghargharanirghoṣasphītaphetkāravisvaram| tārkṣyapakṣakṛtāpīḍaṁ tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrākurojjvalam||
It made a terrible gurgling roar, a swelling hissing cry; crowned as if with Garuda's wings, it blazed with the sprouting tips of sharp fangs.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.38.4)
tasminmukhe kapālāgraṁ nidhāya ruṣitānanā| apibadrudhiraṁ caṁḍī caṇḍadordaṁḍamaṁḍitā||
Placing the skull-cup before that mouth, her face contorted with fury, Chandi, adorned with fierce, mighty arms, drank the blood.
Verse 5 (skanda.5.38.5)
tayā pibaṁtyā daityeṁdraḥ śarīre kṛśatāṁ gataḥ| kṣayaṁ ninye'tha saṁkṣīṇakṣudrakṣubhitavīkṣaṇaḥ||
As she drank thus, the lord of the daityas grew emaciated in body; he was brought to ruin, wasted away, his gaze now feeble and agitated.
Verse 6 (skanda.5.38.6)
itthaṁ nirvīryadeho'sau babhūvāṁdhakadānavaḥ| sarvāṁ saṁhṛtya māyāṁ yo balaṁ kṣīṇamathākarot||
Thus the demon Andhaka's body became devoid of strength; withdrawing all his illusive power, he rendered his own might utterly exhausted.
Verse 7 (skanda.5.38.7)
tīvraṁ bhayaṁ samāsādya prāṇatrāṇaparāyaṇaḥ| dṛṣṭvā nānyāṁ gatiṁ loke daityastuṣṭāva śaṁkaram||
Overcome by intense fear, intent only upon saving his life, and seeing no other refuge in the world, the daitya praised Shankara.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.38.8)
kṛtāṁjalipuṭo bhūtvā romāṁcitaśarīrakaḥ| sāttvikaṁ bhāvamāpannastyaktvā caiva rajastamaḥ||
With joined palms and body trembling with emotion, having cast off rajas and tamas and attained a sattvic state of mind,
Verse 9 (skanda.5.38.9)
lokānāṁ kāraṇaṁ devaṁ vibudhādhipatiṁ prabhum| śaśvadbuddhyānvito bhaktyā nirmalenāṁtarātmanā||
with a mind ever composed and a pure inner self, filled with devotion, [he praised] the god who is the cause of all the worlds, the Lord of the wise —
Verse 10 (skanda.5.38.10)
ślāghyaṁ śivaṁ ca tuṣṭāva devaṁ caṁdrārdhaśekharam||
of praiseworthy Shiva, the god who bears the crescent moon on his crest — of him he sang praise.
