The Greatness of Koti Tirtha

Verse 1 (skanda.5.374.1)

श्रीमार्कण्डेय उवाच। नर्मदादक्षिणे कूले तीर्थं कोटीश्वरं परम्। यत्र स्नानं च दानं च सर्वं कोटिगुणं भवेत्।

śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca| narmadādakṣiṇe kūle tīrthaṁ koṭīśvaraṁ param| yatra snānaṁ ca dānaṁ ca sarvaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ bhavet|||

Shri Markandeya said: On the southern bank of the Narmada is the supreme tirtha of Kotishvara, where bathing and giving in charity, all become a hundred million times more fruitful.

Verse 2 (skanda.5.374.2)

तत्र देवाः सगन्धर्वा ऋषयो ये तथामलाः। कोटितीर्थे परां सिद्धिं सम्प्राप्ता भुवि दुर्लभाम्।

tatra devāḥ sagandharvā ṛṣayo ye tathāmalāḥ| koṭitīrthe parāṁ siddhiṁ samprāptā bhuvi durlabhām|||

There, the gods together with the gandharvas, and the pure sages, attained at Kotitirtha a supreme perfection, rare to find on earth.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.374.3)

स्थापितश्च महादेवस्तत्र कोटीश्वरो नृप। तं दृष्ट्वा देवदेवेशं सिद्धिं प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमाम्।

sthāpitaśca mahādevastatra koṭīśvaro nṛpa| taṁ dṛṣṭvā devadeveśaṁ siddhiṁ prāpnotyanuttamām|||

O king, Mahadeva is established there in the form of Kotishvara. By merely beholding that god of gods, a man attains unsurpassed perfection.

Verse 4 (skanda.5.374.4)

तत्र तीर्थे तु यत्किंचिच्छुभं वा यदि वाशुभम्। क्रियते तन्नृपश्रेष्ठ सर्वं कोटिगुणं भवेत्।

tatra tīrthe tu yatkiṁciccchubhaṁ vā yadi vāśubham| kriyate tannṛpaśreṣṭha sarvaṁ koṭiguṇaṁ bhavet|||

O best of kings, whatever is done at that tirtha, whether auspicious or inauspicious, all of it becomes multiplied a hundred million times.

Verse 5 (skanda.5.374.5)

तत्र दक्षिणमार्गस्था ये केचिन्मुनिसत्तमाः। सिद्धा मृताः पदं यान्ति पितृलोकं ध्रुवं हि ते।

tatra dakṣiṇamārgasthā ye kecinmunisattamāḥ| siddhā mṛtāḥ padaṁ yānti pitṛlokaṁ dhruvaṁ hi te|||

Whatever foremost sages, dwelling there on the southern side, having attained perfection, meet their death - they surely attain the state of the world of the ancestors.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.374.6)

उत्तरं नर्मदाकूलं ये श्रेष्ठा मुनिपुंगवाः। देवलोकं गताः पूर्वमिति शास्त्रस्य निश्चयः।

uttaraṁ narmadākūlaṁ ye śreṣṭhā munipuṅgavāḥ| devalokaṁ gatāḥ pūrvamiti śāstrasya niścayaḥ|||

Those foremost among sages who dwell on the northern bank of the Narmada attained, in ancient times, the world of the gods - this is the determination of the scriptures.
