Avanti Khanda · Chapter 43
The Account Telling the Name Ujjayini
Verse 1 (skanda.5.43.1)
sanatkumāra uvāca| ekasminnaṁtare vyāsa yathojjayanī smṛtā purī| tathāhaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi śṛṇuṣva tvaṁ samāhitaḥ||
Sanatkumara said: O Vyasa, now I shall tell you how this city came to be remembered by the name Ujjayini; listen with a composed mind.
Verse 2 (skanda.5.43.2)
tripurākhyo mahādaityaḥ sarvadaityajaneśvaraḥ| tapastepe sudurdharṣaṁ brahmaṇastuṣṭikāraṇāt||
The great daitya named Tripura, the lord of all daitya-folk, undertook an extremely severe austerity to please Brahma.
Verse 3 (skanda.5.43.3)
ātape cāgnisevāṁ vai prāvṛṣi meghaḍaṁbaram| damayitvā tadātmānaṁ śītakāle jalāśaye||
In the heat of summer he practiced the discipline of fire; in the rains, beneath the thundering clouds; and in winter he mortified his body standing in a pool of water.
Verse 4 (skanda.5.43.4)
śīrṇapatrajalāhāro vāyubhakṣī nirāśrayaḥ| gāyatrīvratamāsthāya tyaktasarvaparigrahaḥ||
living on withered leaves and water, feeding on air alone, without shelter, observing the Gayatri vow, having renounced all possessions—
Verse 5 (skanda.5.43.5)
evaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu tapastaptaṁ suduścaram| pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu brahmā prītatamo'bravīt||
thus he performed this extremely arduous austerity for a thousand years. When the thousand years were complete, Brahma, exceedingly pleased, said—
Verse 6 (skanda.5.43.6)
vriyatāṁ bho'suraśreṣṭha varaṁ mattobhivāṁchitam| tatsarvaṁ sāṁprataṁ loke varaṁ tubhyaṁ dadāmi vai||
'O best of asuras, choose whatever boon you desire from me; whatever you wish for in this world, that boon I now grant you.'
Verse 7 (skanda.5.43.7)
evamuktaḥ sa vidhinā daityastripurasaṁjñitaḥ| uvāca vacanaṁ sadyo brahmāṇaṁ saṁśitavratam||
Thus addressed by Vidhi, the daitya named Tripura at once spoke this word to Brahma of firm vow.
Verse 8 (skanda.5.43.8)
tripura uvāca| yadi tuṣṭamanā brahmanvaraṁ me dātumicchasi| devadānagaṁdharvapiśācoragarākṣasaiḥ| avadhyo'haṁ sadā bhūyāṁ varametadvṛṇomyaham||
Tripura said: O Brahma, if with a pleased mind you wish to grant me a boon, then I ask this boon: that I may ever remain unslayable by gods, danavas, gandharvas, pishachas, serpents and rakshasas.
Verse 9 (skanda.5.43.9)
brahmovāca| evaṁ bhavatu bho vatsa vicarasvākutobhayaḥ| ityuktvā sahasā brahmā tatraivāṁtaradhīyata||
Brahma said: 'So be it, my child; go about without fear.' Having said this, Brahma at once vanished from that very place.
Verse 10 (skanda.5.43.10)
tadārabhya mahādaityo devānāṁ kadanaṁ mahat| cakāra kopapūrṇo vai pūrvavairamanusmaran||
From then on that great daitya, filled with wrath and recalling his old enmity, began to wreak great destruction upon the gods.
Verse 11 (skanda.5.43.11)
vāsayitvā yatra tatra tripurāṇi carāṇi ca| atra vāsakṛtaḥ sarve varṇāśramaparā janāḥ||
He established, here and there, three moving cities, in which all the people devoted to the varna-ashrama order dwelt.
Verse 12 (skanda.5.43.12)
teṣāṁ vai kadanaṁ cakre nānopāyena pāpadhīḥ| tasminpure duṣṭavāse brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ||
That evil-minded one destroyed them through many devices; in that city of wicked dwelling, the brahmins learned in the Veda—
Verse 13 (skanda.5.43.13)
na juhuyuścāgnihotraṁ somapānaṁ na karhicit| kutaścitsukṛtaṁ karma janāḥ kurvaṁti no mune||
—no longer performed the agnihotra, nor ever drank the soma; O sage, the people performed no meritorious act of any kind.
Verse 14 (skanda.5.43.14)
svāhākārasvadhākāravaṣaṭkāravivarjitāḥ| notsavo dṛśyate gehe kasyacidbhuvi vistṛtaḥ||
They had abandoned the cries of svaha, svadha and vashat; nowhere on that ground was a grand festival to be seen in anyone's house.
Verse 15 (skanda.5.43.15)
devatāyatanaṁ nāsti tathā no śivapūjanam| nāsti yajño na dānāni na gobrāhmaṇapūjanam||
There was no shrine of the gods, nor any worship of Shiva; no sacrifice, no charity, and no reverence for cows or brahmins.
Verse 16 (skanda.5.43.16)
sadācārajano nāsti dayā mānavivarjitā| na dānī nopakārī ca tapasvī naiva dṛśyate||
No person of good conduct remained; compassion and respect had vanished; no one generous or helpful, nor any ascetic, was to be seen at all.
Verse 17 (skanda.5.43.17)
evaṁ vyāsa pure tasminnaṣṭaprāyamidaṁ jagat| prajānāṁ brāhmaṇā mūlaṁ vedamūlā hi brāhmaṇāḥ||
Thus, O Vyasa, in that city this whole world became all but destroyed. The brahmins are the root of the people, and the Veda is the root of the brahmins.
Verse 18 (skanda.5.43.18)
vedamūlaparā yajñā yajñamūlā hi devatāḥ| tasmādvyāsa hataṁ sarvaṁ kṛtaṁ tena durātmanā||
The Veda is the root of the sacrifices, and the sacrifices are the root of the gods; therefore, O Vyasa, that wicked one destroyed all of this.
Verse 19 (skanda.5.43.19)
tena devagaṇāḥ sarve hataprāyā hataujasaḥ| vicaraṁti yathā martyā bhuvi tena parājitāḥ||
Because of him, all the hosts of gods, all but slain and stripped of their splendor, wandered the earth like mortals, defeated by him.
Verse 20 (skanda.5.43.20)
anyonyakṛtasaṁdhānā maṁtraṁ kṛtvā samāhitāḥ| jagmuste tatra yatrāste prajāpatirakalmaṣaḥ||
Making a pact with one another and taking counsel with focused minds, they went to where the stainless Prajapati was present.
Verse 21 (skanda.5.43.21)
tridaśāḥ kathayāmāsurātmavyasanakāraṇam| tajjñātvā sahasotthāya brahmā lokapitā mahaḥ||
The gods related to him the cause of their own calamity. Learning this, the great Brahma, father of the worlds, rose at once,
Verse 22 (skanda.5.43.22)
jagāma tridaśaiḥ sārdhaṁ mahākālavanottamam| yatrāste satataṁ deva umayā sahitaḥ śivaḥ||
and went, together with the gods, to the excellent Mahakalavana, where the god Shiva ever dwells together with Uma.
Verse 23 (skanda.5.43.23)
yatrāvaṁtī purī divyā sarvatīrthaniṣevitā| tatrāgatya suraiḥ sākaṁ svayaṁbhūścaturānanaḥ||
There, where the divine city of Avanti is honored by all tirthas, the four-faced Self-born (Brahma) came, together with the gods, and,
Verse 24 (skanda.5.43.24)
snānaṁ dānaṁ japaṁ homaṁ kṛtvā rudrasare tadā| pūjayitvā mahākālaṁ brahmā vacanamabravīt||
having performed bathing, giving, japa and oblation at the Rudra-lake, and having worshipped Mahakala, Brahma spoke this word.
Verse 25 (skanda.5.43.25)
brahmovāca| devadeva mahādeva bhaktānāmabhayaṁkara| śrūyatāṁ bhoḥ suraśreṣṭha devakāryamanuttamam||
Brahma said: O God of gods, Mahadeva, giver of fearlessness to your devotees — hear, O best of gods, this most pressing matter concerning the gods.
Verse 26 (skanda.5.43.26)
tripuronāma daityeṁdro devānāṁ kadanaṁ mahat| karoti satataṁ daityo devabrāhmaṇaniṁdakaḥ||
The lord of daityas named Tripura, that daitya who reviles the gods and brahmins, constantly wreaks great destruction upon the gods.
Verse 27 (skanda.5.43.27)
vāsayitvā purastisro vistīrṇā vicaratyatha| tatra sthitāni bhūtāni nāśaṁ yāṁti durātmanā||
Having built three vast cities, he roves about; the creatures dwelling in them are being destroyed by that wicked one.
Verse 28 (skanda.5.43.28)
evaṁ kṛtvā prajāḥ sarvāḥ kṣayaṁ nītāścarācarāḥ| udvāsitāni dvīpāni grāmāśca nagarāṇi ca||
Acting thus, he has brought all creatures, moving and unmoving, to ruin; islands, villages and cities alike have all been laid waste.
Verse 29 (skanda.5.43.29)
ṛṣīṇāmāśramāḥ sarve yatīnāmāyatanāni ca| evaṁ kṛtvā surāḥ sarve bhraṣṭarājyāḥ parājitāḥ||
The hermitages of all the sages, and the abodes of ascetics too, have been laid waste. Thus all the gods, cast out of their own realms, have been defeated.
Verse 30 (skanda.5.43.30)
vicaraṁti yathā martyāstripureṇa durātmanā| matto labdhavaro nityaṁ vrajatyevākutobhayaḥ||
Because of that wicked Tripura, they now wander about like mortals; while he, having obtained a boon from me, moves about ever fearless.
Verse 31 (skanda.5.43.31)
tasmātsarvaprayatnena vadhastasya viciṁtyatām||
Therefore, with every effort, a means for his slaying must be devised.
Verse 32 (skanda.5.43.32)
iti śrutvā vacastasya brahmaṇaḥ saṁśitātmanaḥ| ciraṁ dhyātvā mahādevo brahmāṇaṁ tamuvāca ha||
Having heard this word of Brahma, firm of resolve, Mahadeva meditated for a long while and then spoke thus to Brahma.
Verse 33 (skanda.5.43.33)
mahādeva uvāca| śrūyatāṁ bhoḥ suraśreṣṭhā brahmaśakrapurogamāḥ| jayopāyaṁ kariṣyāmi daityasyāsya durātmanaḥ||
Mahadeva said: Listen, O best of gods, led by Brahma and Shakra — I shall devise the means of victory over this wicked daitya.
Verse 34 (skanda.5.43.34)
tapaścarata yūyaṁ vā ātmano jayakāṁkṣiṇaḥ| avaṁtyāṁ yaddhutaṁ dattaṁ tatsarvaṁ cākṣayaṁ bhavet||
You too should practice austerity, desiring your own victory; for whatever is offered in oblation or given as gift in Avanti becomes imperishable.
Verse 35 (skanda.5.43.35)
ityuktvā sarvadevānāṁ tatraivāṁtarhitaḥ śivaḥ| gatvā smaśānanilaye bhūtapretaniṣevite||
Having said this, Shiva vanished from before all the gods right there, and, going to the abode of the cremation ground, frequented by ghosts and spirits,
Verse 36 (skanda.5.43.36)
jayārthaṁ tasya daityasya tripurasya durātmanaḥ| upāsāṁcakrire tatra cāmuṇḍāyāḥ sureśvarāḥ||
for the sake of victory over that wicked daitya Tripura, the lord of gods began there the worship of Chamunda.
Verse 37 (skanda.5.43.37)
mahiṣaiśca mahāmedhyaiḥ paśupuṣpārghatarpaṇaiḥ| balibhirvividhairdānairdhūpadīpāgnitarpaṇaiḥ| pūjayitvā tadā devīṁ tāmīḍe vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ||
With great and hallowed buffaloes, with animal offerings, flowers, arghya and tarpana, with various sacrificial offerings and gifts, with incense, lamps and fire-oblations, having worshipped that Goddess, the bull-bannered Shiva then praised her.
Verse 38 (skanda.5.43.38)
durgāṁ bhagavatīṁ bhadrāṁ durgasaṁsāratāraṇīm| tripurāṁtakāriṇīṁ kṛtyāṁ caṁḍamuṁḍavadhodyamām||
Durga, the auspicious Goddess, who ferries beings across this difficult world, who brings about the end of Tripura, the active power engaged in the slaying of Chanda and Munda,
Verse 39 (skanda.5.43.39)
daityamedomadonmattāṁ raktākhyāṁ raktadaṁtikām| raktāṁbaradharāṁ dhīrāṁ raktapuṣpāvatīṁ satīm||
who, intoxicated with the fat and pride of demons, bears the name Rakta ('the red one'), red-toothed, clad in red, resolute, adorned with red flowers, the virtuous one,
Verse 40 (skanda.5.43.40)
mahiṣavāhinīṁ śyāmāṁ yakṣāsanaparigrahām| dvīpicarmaparīdhānāṁ śuṣkamāṁsātibhairavām||
who rides upon a buffalo, dark-hued, seated on a throne of yakshas, clad in a leopard's hide, most terrifying in her form of gaunt, dried flesh —
Verse 41 (skanda.5.43.41)
pūjayitvā prasannātmā dhyānamāsthāya saṁsthitaḥ| tadā bhagavatī bhadrā yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat| prasannavadanā bhūtvā pratyakṣaṁ prāha caṁḍikā||
Having worshipped her thus, [Shiva], with a pleased mind, remained fixed in meditation. Then the auspicious Goddess, by whom this whole world is upheld, appeared in person, her face gracious, and Chandika spoke.
Verse 42 (skanda.5.43.42)
devyuvāca| vriyatāṁ bhoḥ suraśreṣṭha varaṁ matto'bhivāṁchitam| sarvaṁ tvayoktaṁ yacchāmi jagatāmupakārakam||
The Goddess said: O best of gods, choose from me the boon you desire; whatever you have asked, beneficial to the worlds, all of that I grant.
Verse 43 (skanda.5.43.43)
śrīhara uvāca| yadi tuṣṭāsi vai devi dehi me varamuttamam| yena hanmi mahādaityaṁ tripuraṁ devakaṁṭakam||
Shri Hara said: O Goddess, if you are pleased, grant me that excellent boon by which I may slay the great daitya Tripura, the thorn in the gods' side.
Verse 44 (skanda.5.43.44)
śrīdevyuvāca| jaya hyenaṁ mahādeva gṛhāṇa pāśupataṁ param| mayā dattaṁ suraśreṣṭha daityanāśakaraṁ param||
Shri Devi said: Conquer him, O Mahadeva; take this supreme Pashupata weapon, given by me, O best of gods, most excellent for the destruction of the daitya.
Verse 45 (skanda.5.43.45)
mahāpāśupataṁ śastraṁ kare kṛtvā ca śaṁkaraḥ||
Taking the great Pashupata weapon into his hand, Shankara,
Verse 46 (skanda.5.43.46)
ujjahāra tadā śaṁbhurdaityanāśāya satvaraḥ| mahāḍaṁbariko bhūtvā sarvaprāṇibhayaṁkaraḥ||
then swiftly drew it forth for the destruction of the daitya; becoming greatly tumultuous, he grew terrifying to every living being.
Verse 47 (skanda.5.43.47)
stutiṁ kṛtvā yayau vāgbhiḥ pṛṣṭhato'nuyayuḥ surāḥ| śareṇaikena vai rudro jaghāna taṁ mahāsuram||
Amid hymns of praise he advanced, the gods following behind him; with a single arrow Rudra slew that great asura.
Verse 48 (skanda.5.43.48)
māyinaṁ taṁ tridhā bhittvā māyāyuddhena śaṁkaraḥ| punarāgātpurīmetāmavaṁtīmamarasevitām||
Having, through a battle of illusion, split that illusion-wielding one into three, Shankara returned once more to this city of Avanti, honored by the immortals.
Verse 49 (skanda.5.43.49)
jayāśiṣā prayuṁjānā ṛṣayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ| tuṣṭuvuśca tadā devā jayaśabdena harṣitāḥ||
The sages, siddhas and charanas offered blessings of victory; and the gods, rejoicing with cries of triumph, sang his praises.
Verse 50 (skanda.5.43.50)
apsarā nanṛtustatra gaṁdharvā lalitaṁ jaguḥ| vavau tadā puṇyatamo vāyuḥ sukhaprado nṛṇām||
The apsaras danced there, the gandharvas sang sweetly; then a most auspicious breeze began to blow, bringing happiness to men.
Verse 51 (skanda.5.43.51)
jayaśabdastadā jātaḥ prāṇināṁ ca gṛhegṛhe| jajvaluścāgnayaḥ śāṁtāḥ śāṁtā digjanitasvanāḥ||
Then cries of victory arose in the home of every living being; tranquil fires blazed up, and the tumultuous sounds that had risen from every quarter grew calm.
Verse 52 (skanda.5.43.52)
pravartaṁte tadā yajñā mahotsavasadakṣiṇāḥ| devāḥ prapedire sthānaṁ svakīyaṁ punarādṛtam||
Then sacrifices, accompanied by great festivity and generous gifts, began anew; the gods regained their own places, once more held in honor.
Verse 53 (skanda.5.43.53)
ujjito dānavo yasmāttrailokye sthāpitaṁ yaśaḥ| tasmātsarvaiḥ suraśreṣṭhairṛṣibhiḥ sanakādibhiḥ||
Because that danava was thus conquered, and fame was established throughout the three worlds, therefore, by all the best of gods and by the sages headed by Sanaka,
Verse 54 (skanda.5.43.54)
kṛtaṁ nāma hyavaṁtyā vā ujjayinī pāpanāśinī| avaṁtī ca purā proktā sarvakāmavarapradā||
the name Ujjayini, destroyer of sin, was given to Avanti; that very city, formerly called Avanti, the giver of every desired boon,
Verse 55 (skanda.5.43.55)
adyaprabhṛti purī vyāsa ujjayinī samāśritāḥ| ye'syāṁ ca snānadānādi bhuvi kurvaṁti mānavāḥ||
from this day forth, O Vyasa, has also come to be known by the name Ujjayini. Whatever men perform bathing, giving and the like upon this ground,
Verse 56 (skanda.5.43.56)
na teṣāṁ duṣkṛtaṁ kiṁciddehe tiṣṭhati pāpajam||
no evil deed born of sin remains at all within their bodies.
Verse 57 (skanda.5.43.57)
vidyārthī girīśaṁ dhanārthī dhaneśaṁ sutārthī suteśaṁ dineśaṁ sukhārthī| dhiyorthī gaṇeśaṁ priyārthī vasedvai girāṁ grāhyamānī janaścojjayinyām||
The seeker of learning should worship Girisha; the seeker of wealth, the Lord of Wealth; the seeker of a son, the Lord of Sons; the seeker of happiness, the Sun; the seeker of wisdom, Ganesha; and let one who desires what is dear take these words to heart and dwell in Ujjayini.
