The Greatness of Kapaleshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.5.79.1)

श्रीरुद्र उवाच। कपालेश्वरसंज्ञं च ह्यष्टमं विद्धि पार्वति। यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण ब्रह्महत्या प्रणश्यति

śrīrudra uvāca| kapāleśvarasaṁjñaṁ ca hyaṣṭamaṁ viddhi pārvati| yasya darśanamātreṇa brahmahatyā praṇaśyati

Shri Rudra said: "Know the eighth, O Parvati, by the name Kapaleshvara; by the mere sight of whom the sin of slaying a brahmin is destroyed."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.79.2)

पुरा वैवस्वते कल्पे त्रेताकाले समागते। महाकालवने दिव्ये यजे पैतामहे प्रिये

purā vaivasvate kalpe tretākāle samāgate| mahākālavane divye yaje paitāmahe priye

Long ago, in the Vaivasvata kalpa, when the Treta age had come, O beloved, at the sacrifice of the Grandsire in the divine Mahakala forest —

Verse 3 (skanda.5.79.3)

उपविष्टेषु विप्रेषु हूयमाने हुताशने। वेषं कापालिकं कृत्वा गतोऽहं तत्र संसदि

upaviṣṭeṣu vipreṣu hūyamāne hutāśane| veṣaṁ kāpālikaṁ kṛtvā gato'haṁ tatra saṁsadi

— while the brahmins sat and oblations were being offered into the fire, I went to that assembly having taken the guise of a Kapalika (skull-bearing ascetic).

Verse 4 (skanda.5.79.4)

जीर्णकंथावृतो देवि मुंडः खट्वांगधारकः। चिताभस्मविलिप्तांगो विकृतो विकृताननः। कपालं च करे कृत्वा कपालकृतभूषणः

jīrṇakaṁthāvṛto devi muṁḍaḥ khaṭvāṁgadhārakaḥ| citābhasmaviliptāṁgo vikṛto vikṛtānanaḥ| kapālaṁ ca kare kṛtvā kapālakṛtabhūṣaṇaḥ

O Devi, clad in a tattered rag, shaven-headed, bearing a khatvanga staff, my limbs smeared with the ashes of the pyre, deformed of body and face, a skull in my hand, adorned with skulls —

Verse 5 (skanda.5.79.5)

ब्राह्मणाश्च ततः क्रुद्धा दृष्ट्वा मां जाल्मरूपिणम्। कपालधारिणं सर्वे धिक्छब्दैश्च जगर्हिरे

brāhmaṇāśca tataḥ kruddhā dṛṣṭvā māṁ jālmarūpiṇam| kapāladhāriṇaṁ sarve dhikchabdaiśca jagarhire

— then the brahmins, angered at seeing me in that wretched, skull-bearing form, all reviled me with words of contempt.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.79.6)

असकृत्पापपापेति गच्छगच्छ विडंबिताः। कथं च होमः क्रियते प्राप्ते कापालिके पुरः

asakṛtpāpapāpeti gacchagaccha viḍaṁbitāḥ| kathaṁ ca homaḥ kriyate prāpte kāpālike puraḥ

"Sinner, sinner!" they said, mocking me again and again, "Go away, go away! How can the oblation be performed with a Kapalika standing before us?"

Verse 7 (skanda.5.79.7)

अकपालानि शौचानि इति वेदेषु गीयते। यज्ञवेदिर्न तेर्हा तु मनुष्यास्थि धरस्य वै

akapālāni śaucāni iti vedeṣu gīyate| yajñavedirna terhā tu manuṣyāsthi dharasya vai

"It is sung in the Vedas that purity lies in being free of skulls; there is no sacrificial altar for one who bears human bone."

Verse 8 (skanda.5.79.8)

मया प्रोक्तास्तु ते विप्राः श्रूयतां द्विजसत्तमाः। यूयं कारुणिकाः सर्वे परदुःखेन दुःखिताः

mayā proktāstu te viprāḥ śrūyatāṁ dvijasattamāḥ| yūyaṁ kāruṇikāḥ sarve paraduḥkhena duḥkhitāḥ

Then I said to those brahmins: "Listen, O best of twice-born! You are all compassionate, grieved by the suffering of others."

Verse 9 (skanda.5.79.9)

कर्त्तव्या च दया सद्भिः सर्वदा सर्वदेहिनाम्। सर्वेषामेव जंतूनां मित्रं ब्राह्मण उच्यते

karttavyā ca dayā sadbhiḥ sarvadā sarvadehinām| sarveṣāmeva jaṁtūnāṁ mitraṁ brāhmaṇa ucyate

"The good must always show compassion to all embodied beings; the brahmin alone is called the friend of every creature."

Verse 10 (skanda.5.79.10)

अहं कापालिको विप्रो भस्मभूषितविग्रहः। कापालव्रतमास्थाय चरामि पृथिवीतले

ahaṁ kāpāliko vipro bhasmabhūṣitavigrahaḥ| kāpālavratamāsthāya carāmi pṛthivītale

"I am a Kapalika brahmin, my body adorned with ashes; having undertaken the skull-vow, I wander over the earth."

Verse 11 (skanda.5.79.11)

आराधयामि सततं महादेवं जगत्पतिम्। ब्रह्महत्याविनाशाय व्रतं द्वादशवार्षिकम्

ārādhayāmi satataṁ mahādevaṁ jagatpatim| brahmahatyāvināśāya vrataṁ dvādaśavārṣikam

"I ever worship Mahadeva, lord of the world, having undertaken a twelve-year vow for the destruction of the sin of slaying a brahmin."

Verse 12 (skanda.5.79.12)

अघघ्नं विश्रुतं लोके प्रारब्धं हि मया द्विजाः। प्रायश्चित्तनिमित्तं तु शुद्धो यास्यामि सद्गतिम्

aghaghnaṁ viśrutaṁ loke prārabdhaṁ hi mayā dvijāḥ| prāyaścittanimittaṁ tu śuddho yāsyāmi sadgatim

"O twice-born, I have undertaken this sin-destroying vow renowned in the world; for the sake of expiation, once purified, I shall attain the good state."

Verse 13 (skanda.5.79.13)

मदीयं वचनं श्रुत्वा तैः प्रोक्तं द्विजसत्तमैः। अतीव पापिष्ठतरो यो ह्येवं भाषसेऽधम

madīyaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā taiḥ proktaṁ dvijasattamaiḥ| atīva pāpiṣṭhataro yo hyevaṁ bhāṣase'dhama

Having heard my words, those best of brahmins said: "O vile one, whoever speaks thus is exceedingly more sinful still."

Verse 14 (skanda.5.79.14)

कपालैर्भूषितो निंद्यो विशेषेण तु विप्रहः। नाकारितो महादेवो दक्षयज्ञमहोत्सवे

kapālairbhūṣito niṁdyo viśeṣeṇa tu viprahaḥ| nākārito mahādevo dakṣayajñamahotsave

"Reviled, adorned with skulls, a slayer of brahmins — Mahadeva indeed was not even invited to the great sacrificial festival of Daksha."

Verse 15 (skanda.5.79.15)

यस्मिन्यज्ञे समायाता आदित्या वसवस्तथा। विश्वेदेवाश्च मरुतो गंधर्वाः किंनरास्तथा

yasminyajñe samāyātā ādityā vasavastathā| viśvedevāśca maruto gaṁdharvāḥ kiṁnarāstathā

"— to that sacrifice had come the Adityas and the Vasus, the Vishvedevas, the Maruts, the Gandharvas and the Kinnaras —"

Verse 16 (skanda.5.79.16)

ब्रह्मा विष्णुः सहस्राक्षो वरुणो वायुरेव च। धनदः सागरा नद्यः सरांसि सकलानि च

brahmā viṣṇuḥ sahasrākṣo varuṇo vāyureva ca| dhanadaḥ sāgarā nadyaḥ sarāṁsi sakalāni ca

"— Brahma, Vishnu, thousand-eyed Indra, Varuna, and Vayu too, Kubera, the oceans, the rivers, and all the lakes —"

Verse 17 (skanda.5.79.17)

सुपर्णा गिरयो नागाः सर्वे चाकारिताः क्रतौ। सानुगास्ते सभार्याश्च ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः

suparṇā girayo nāgāḥ sarve cākāritāḥ kratau| sānugāste sabhāryāśca brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ

"— the Suparnas, the mountains, the Nagas — all these were invited to that rite, together with their attendants and wives, and brahmins learned in the Veda."

Verse 18 (skanda.5.79.18)

ब्रह्मर्षयो महाभागास्तथा देवर्षयोऽमलाः। एवमुक्त्वा महादेवं मानुषास्थिविभूषितम्

brahmarṣayo mahābhāgāstathā devarṣayo'malāḥ| evamuktvā mahādevaṁ mānuṣāsthivibhūṣitam

"— and the illustrious Brahmarshis, and the stainless Devarshis as well." Having thus spoken, concerning Mahadeva, adorned with human bones —

Verse 19 (skanda.5.79.19)

अपवित्रमिति ज्ञात्वा कथं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि। प्रवेशो दीयतां मह्यं विशेषेणासि ब्रह्महा

apavitramiti jñātvā kathaṁ tvaṁ vaktumarhasi| praveśo dīyatāṁ mahyaṁ viśeṣeṇāsi brahmahā

"— knowing him to be impure, how are you fit to speak on his behalf? Let entry be granted to me — for you, especially, are a slayer of a brahmin."

Verse 20 (skanda.5.79.20)

इत्युक्तोऽहं यदा विप्रैर्मया प्रोक्तं वचस्तदा। प्रतीक्ष्यतां मुहूर्तं तु भुक्त्वा यास्याम्यहं पुनः

ityukto'haṁ yadā viprairmayā proktaṁ vacastadā| pratīkṣyatāṁ muhūrtaṁ tu bhuktvā yāsyāmyahaṁ punaḥ

When the brahmins had spoken thus to me, I then said: "Wait but a moment; having eaten, I shall go away again."

Verse 21 (skanda.5.79.21)

इत्युक्ते वचने देवि ताडितोऽहं भृशं तदा। लोष्ठैर्लगुडकैः पादैर्मुष्टिभिश्च पुनःपुनः

ityukte vacane devi tāḍito'haṁ bhṛśaṁ tadā| loṣṭhairlaguḍakaiḥ pādairmuṣṭibhiśca punaḥpunaḥ

O Devi, no sooner had I said this than I was violently beaten — again and again with clods of earth, with cudgels, with feet and fists.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.79.22)

अथ प्रहस्य तत्क्षिप्त्वा तां वेदिं दर्भसंस्तृताम्। कपालदीपवन्नष्टो न ज्ञातोऽहं द्विजोत्तमैः

atha prahasya tatkṣiptvā tāṁ vediṁ darbhasaṁstṛtām| kapāladīpavannaṣṭo na jñāto'haṁ dvijottamaiḥ

Then, laughing, I flung my skull onto that altar strewn with kusha grass, and vanished like a lamp going out; those excellent twice-born did not recognize me.

Verse 23 (skanda.5.79.23)

मयि नष्टे कपालं तत्क्षिप्तं मंडपबाह्यतः। अथान्यत्तत्र संजातं तादृग्रूपं यशस्विनि

mayi naṣṭe kapālaṁ tatkṣiptaṁ maṁḍapabāhyataḥ| athānyattatra saṁjātaṁ tādṛgrūpaṁ yaśasvini

When I had vanished, that skull was thrown outside the pavilion; but, O glorious one, another of the same form arose there again.

Verse 24 (skanda.5.79.24)

एवं शतसहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च। तत्र क्षिप्तानि जातानि ततस्ते विस्मयान्विताः

evaṁ śatasahasrāṇi prayutānyarbudāni ca| tatra kṣiptāni jātāni tataste vismayānvitāḥ

Thus hundreds and thousands, hundreds of thousands and hundreds of millions of skulls were thrown there and kept arising anew; then they were struck with wonder.

Verse 25 (skanda.5.79.25)

अथाहुर्ज्ञानिनः सर्वे नेदमन्यस्य चेष्टितम्। ऋते देवान्महादेवाद्गंगाचंद्रार्द्धशेखरात्

athāhurjñāninaḥ sarve nedamanyasya ceṣṭitam| ṛte devānmahādevādgaṁgācaṁdrārddhaśekharāt

Then all the wise among them said: "This is the doing of none other than the great god who bears the Ganga and the crescent moon upon his crest."

Verse 26 (skanda.5.79.26)

ततोऽहं विविधैः स्तोत्रैः स्तुतो विप्रैः पृथक्पृथक्। होमं चक्रुश्च ते वह्नौ मंत्रैश्च शतरुद्रियेः

tato'haṁ vividhaiḥ stotraiḥ stuto vipraiḥ pṛthakpṛthak| homaṁ cakruśca te vahnau maṁtraiśca śatarudriyeḥ

Then those brahmins praised me, each with various hymns, and offered oblations into the fire with the hundred Rudra-mantras.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.79.27)

अहं तुष्टस्तदा देवि द्विजानामनुकंपया। व्रियतां ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे वरं यन्मनसेप्सितम्

ahaṁ tuṣṭastadā devi dvijānāmanukaṁpayā| vriyatāṁ brāhmaṇāḥ sarve varaṁ yanmanasepsitam

Then I, O Devi, was pleased out of compassion for the twice-born, and said: "O brahmins, all of you, choose whatever boon is desired in your heart."

Verse 28 (skanda.5.79.28)

तदा ते ब्राह्मणाः प्रोचुर्यदज्ञानाद्वधस्तव। कृतस्तेन कृतास्माभिर्ब्रह्महत्या जगत्प्रभो

tadā te brāhmaṇāḥ procuryadajñānādvadhastava| kṛtastena kṛtāsmābhirbrahmahatyā jagatprabho

Then those brahmins said: "O lord of the world, since your killing was brought about through ignorance, by that we have incurred the sin of slaying a brahmin."

Verse 29 (skanda.5.79.29)

ब्रह्महत्याविनाशाय प्रसादं कुरु नः प्रभो। वरयामो वरं ह्येनं नान्यं वरमभीप्सितम्

brahmahatyāvināśāya prasādaṁ kuru naḥ prabho| varayāmo varaṁ hyenaṁ nānyaṁ varamabhīpsitam

"For the destruction of the sin of brahmin-slaying, O Lord, be gracious to us; this alone is the boon we choose, no other boon do we desire."

Verse 30 (skanda.5.79.30)

द्विजानां च तदा तेषामग्रे कथितवानिदम्। यत्र राशिः कपालानां भवद्भिर्विहितो भुवि

dvijānāṁ ca tadā teṣāmagre kathitavānidam| yatra rāśiḥ kapālānāṁ bhavadbhirvihito bhuvi

Then I spoke this before those twice-born: "Where you have made this heap of skulls upon the earth —"

Verse 31 (skanda.5.79.31)

अनादिलिंगं तत्रासीच्छन्नं कालविपर्यये। पश्यंतु विप्रास्तल्लिंगं ब्रह्महत्याविमोचनम्

anādiliṁgaṁ tatrāsīcchannaṁ kālaviparyaye| paśyaṁtu viprāstalliṁgaṁ brahmahatyāvimocanam

"— there a beginningless linga lay concealed, hidden through the reversal of time; let the brahmins now behold that linga which frees from the sin of slaying a brahmin."

Verse 32 (skanda.5.79.32)

कृता मयापि विप्रेंद्रा ब्रह्महत्या स्वयं पुरा। छिंदता ब्रह्मणः शीर्षं पञ्चमं तेजसोत्कटम्

kṛtā mayāpi vipreṁdrā brahmahatyā svayaṁ purā| chiṁdatā brahmaṇaḥ śīrṣaṁ pañcamaṁ tejasotkaṭam

"O foremost of brahmins, I too, formerly, incurred the sin of slaying a brahmin myself, when I severed the fifth head of Brahma, blazing with excessive splendor."

Verse 33 (skanda.5.79.33)

ब्रह्महत्या ततो जाता ममातीव सुदुःसहा। कपालं च करे लग्नं तथा चातीव दुःसहम्

brahmahatyā tato jātā mamātīva suduḥsahā| kapālaṁ ca kare lagnaṁ tathā cātīva duḥsaham

"Then the sin of brahmin-slaying, exceedingly unbearable, befell me, and that skull too clung fast to my hand, likewise exceedingly unbearable."

Verse 34 (skanda.5.79.34)

दह्यमानस्ततश्चाहं व्याप्तो वै ब्रह्महत्यया। नाशाय सत्वरं तस्याः स्वार्थयात्रामहं गतः

dahyamānastataścāhaṁ vyāpto vai brahmahatyayā| nāśāya satvaraṁ tasyāḥ svārthayātrāmahaṁ gataḥ

"Then, consumed and pervaded by that sin of brahmin-slaying, burning, I set out myself on pilgrimage for its swift destruction."

Verse 35 (skanda.5.79.35)

गतः सर्वेषु तीर्थेषु नैव मुक्तस्तु हत्यया। ततो दुःखी सुसंतप्तो नैव लेभे सुखं क्वचित

gataḥ sarveṣu tīrtheṣu naiva muktastu hatyayā| tato duḥkhī susaṁtapto naiva lebhe sukhaṁ kvacita

"I went to every tirtha, yet was not freed from that sin of killing; then, sorrowful and greatly tormented, I found happiness nowhere at all."

Verse 36 (skanda.5.79.36)

एतस्मिन्नंतरे दैवी वागुवाचाशरीरिणी। गच्छावन्तीं स्वयं नाथ किमर्थं खिद्यते वृथा

etasminnaṁtare daivī vāguvācāśarīriṇī| gacchāvantīṁ svayaṁ nātha kimarthaṁ khidyate vṛthā

"Meanwhile, a divine, bodiless voice spoke: 'O Lord, go yourself to Avanti; why grieve in vain?'"

Verse 37 (skanda.5.79.37)

महाकालवनं पुण्यं त्वया नाथ विनिर्मितम्। कपालकरसंस्थानं रुद्रमद्भुतदर्शनम्। न जानासि कथं क्षेत्रं महापातकनाशनम्

mahākālavanaṁ puṇyaṁ tvayā nātha vinirmitam| kapālakarasaṁsthānaṁ rudramadbhutadarśanam| na jānāsi kathaṁ kṣetraṁ mahāpātakanāśanam

"'The sacred Mahakala forest was fashioned by you yourself, O Lord; there stands a form of Rudra, wondrous to behold, skull in hand. How is it you do not know that this field destroys great sins?'"

Verse 38 (skanda.5.79.38)

तस्मिन्क्षेत्रे महल्लिंगं गजरूपस्य संनिधौ। विद्यते पश्य देवेश ब्रह्महत्या प्रणश्यति

tasminkṣetre mahalliṁgaṁ gajarūpasya saṁnidhau| vidyate paśya deveśa brahmahatyā praṇaśyati

"'In that field, near the elephant-formed one, there stands a great linga; behold it, O Lord of gods, for by it the sin of slaying a brahmin is destroyed.'"

Verse 39 (skanda.5.79.39)

ततोऽहमागतस्तूर्ण वाक्यं श्रुत्वा तदोत्तमम्। महल्लिंगं मया दृष्टं कपालकरसंस्थितम्

tato'hamāgatastūrṇa vākyaṁ śrutvā tadottamam| mahalliṁgaṁ mayā dṛṣṭaṁ kapālakarasaṁsthitam

Hearing that excellent word, I came there at once; and I beheld that great linga, standing there, skull in hand.

Verse 40 (skanda.5.79.40)

मम हस्तात्तदा विप्राः कपालमपतद्भुवि। कपालेश्वरदेवोऽयमिति नाम मया कृतम्

mama hastāttadā viprāḥ kapālamapatadbhuvi| kapāleśvaradevo'yamiti nāma mayā kṛtam

O brahmins, then the skull fell from my hand to the ground; and I myself gave it the name Kapaleshvara-deva.

Verse 41 (skanda.5.79.41)

पश्यंतु विप्रास्तं देवं कपालेश्वरसंज्ञ कम्। यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण निष्कलंका भविष्यथ

paśyaṁtu viprāstaṁ devaṁ kapāleśvarasaṁjña kam| yasya darśanamātreṇa niṣkalaṁkā bhaviṣyatha

"Behold, O brahmins, that god named Kapaleshvara; by the mere sight of whom you shall become free of all stain."

Verse 42 (skanda.5.79.42)

लिंगं दृष्टं तदा तैस्तु कपालैर्बहुभिवृतम्। कृतार्थास्ते तदा जातास्तस्य लिंगस्य दर्शनात्

liṁgaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ tadā taistu kapālairbahubhivṛtam| kṛtārthāste tadā jātāstasya liṁgasya darśanāt

Then they beheld that linga, encircled by many skulls; and by the sight of that linga they became fulfilled.

Verse 43 (skanda.5.79.43)

अतोऽसौ भुवि विख्यातः कपालेश्वरसंज्ञकः। येऽर्चयन्ति महादेवि कपालेश्वरसंज्ञकम्

ato'sau bhuvi vikhyātaḥ kapāleśvarasaṁjñakaḥ| ye'rcayanti mahādevi kapāleśvarasaṁjñakam

From then on this became renowned on earth by the name Kapaleshvara; O Mahadevi, those who worship the god named Kapaleshvara —

Verse 44 (skanda.5.79.44)

कृतपुण्या नरा देवि ते यांति परमं पदम्। कृत्वापि पातकं घोरं ब्रह्महत्यादिकं नरः

kṛtapuṇyā narā devi te yāṁti paramaṁ padam| kṛtvāpi pātakaṁ ghoraṁ brahmahatyādikaṁ naraḥ

— those meritorious men, O Devi, attain the supreme state; even a man who has committed a terrible sin such as slaying a brahmin —

Verse 45 (skanda.5.79.45)

तत्पापं विलयं याति लिंगस्यास्य च दर्शनात्। कर्मणा मनसा वाचा यत्पापं समुपार्जितम्। तत्क्षपयति देवोऽयं चतुर्द्दश्यां समर्चितः

tatpāpaṁ vilayaṁ yāti liṁgasyāsya ca darśanāt| karmaṇā manasā vācā yatpāpaṁ samupārjitam| tatkṣapayati devo'yaṁ caturddaśyāṁ samarcitaḥ

— that sin of his dissolves through the sight of this linga; whatever sin has been accumulated by deed, thought, or word, this god destroys it when worshipped on the fourteenth.

Verse 46 (skanda.5.79.46)

प्रसंगादपि ये पूजां करिष्यंति वरानने। तेऽपि कामानवाप्स्यंति यांश्च कांश्चित्सुदुर्लभान्। ऐश्वर्यधर्ममतुलं दीर्घमायुररोगताम्

prasaṁgādapi ye pūjāṁ kariṣyaṁti varānane| te'pi kāmānavāpsyaṁti yāṁśca kāṁścitsudurlabhān| aiśvaryadharmamatulaṁ dīrghamāyurarogatām

O fair-faced one, even those who worship him only incidentally shall attain whatever wishes, however rare — unequalled prosperity and righteousness, long life, and freedom from illness.

Verse 47 (skanda.5.79.47)

निःसपत्नत्वमतुलं यच्चान्यत्तदवाप्नुयात्। अतीव पापिनो ये च क्रूरकर्मरता नराः

niḥsapatnatvamatulaṁ yaccānyattadavāpnuyāt| atīva pāpino ye ca krūrakarmaratā narāḥ

— matchless freedom from rivals, and whatever else may be desired, all this shall be obtained. And those men who are exceedingly sinful, devoted to cruel deeds —

Verse 48 (skanda.5.79.48)

विपाप्मानो भविष्यंति गणेशाश्च मम प्रिये। नियमेन प्रपश्यंति ये देवं वत्सरं प्रिये। ते पश्यंति तनुं त्यक्त्वा मदीयं भवनं प्रियम्

vipāpmāno bhaviṣyaṁti gaṇeśāśca mama priye| niyamena prapaśyaṁti ye devaṁ vatsaraṁ priye| te paśyaṁti tanuṁ tyaktvā madīyaṁ bhavanaṁ priyam

— they too, O beloved, shall become free of sin and join the ranks of my ganas. Those who behold this god regularly for a year, O beloved, upon leaving the body behold my beloved abode.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.79.49)

एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। कपालेश्वरदेवस्य स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरं शृणु

eṣa te kathito devi prabhāvaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ| kapāleśvaradevasya svargadvāreśvaraṁ śṛṇu
