The Greatness of Svargadvareshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.5.80.1)

श्रीरुद्र उवाच। स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरं लिंगं नवमं विद्धि पार्वति। सर्वपापहरं देवि स्वर्गमोक्षफलप्रदम्

śrīrudra uvāca| svargadvāreśvaraṁ liṁgaṁ navamaṁ viddhi pārvati| sarvapāpaharaṁ devi svargamokṣaphalapradam

Shri Rudra said: "Know the ninth linga, O Parvati, as Svargadvareshvara; O Devi, remover of all sin, bestowing the fruit of heaven and liberation."

Verse 2 (skanda.5.80.2)

यदा देवि समायाताः कैलासे पर्वतोत्तमे। अश्विन्याद्या भगिन्यस्तास्त्वां दृष्ट्वा विस्मयान्विताः

yadā devi samāyātāḥ kailāse parvatottame| aśvinyādyā bhaginyastāstvāṁ dṛṣṭvā vismayānvitāḥ

O Devi, when your sisters, Ashvini and the others, came to Kailasa, best of mountains, they, seeing you, were struck with wonder.

Verse 3 (skanda.5.80.3)

निमंत्रिता वयं यज्ञे सकांताः सपरिग्रहाः। स्नेहेन देवि तातेन बहुमानपुरः सरम्

nimaṁtritā vayaṁ yajñe sakāṁtāḥ saparigrahāḥ| snehena devi tātena bahumānapuraḥ saram

They said: "We were invited to the sacrifice, with our husbands and households, by our father, out of affection and with great honor."

Verse 4 (skanda.5.80.4)

कच्चित्स्मृता विशालाक्षि किं वा तातस्य विस्मृतिः। कारणं किं समुद्दिश्य तातेन न निमंत्रिता

kaccitsmṛtā viśālākṣi kiṁ vā tātasya vismṛtiḥ| kāraṇaṁ kiṁ samuddiśya tātena na nimaṁtritā

"Were you forgotten, O large-eyed one? Or did our father himself forget? For what reason did our father not invite you?"

Verse 5 (skanda.5.80.5)

तासां तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा अवमा नात्तदा त्वया। प्राणा मुक्तास्तु योगेन पुरतस्तासु पार्वति

tāsāṁ tadvacanaṁ śrutvā avamā nāttadā tvayā| prāṇā muktāstu yogena puratastāsu pārvati

Hearing their words, and stung by that insult, O Parvati, you then and there gave up your life-breath through yoga, before their very eyes.

Verse 6 (skanda.5.80.6)

अथ ताः शोकसंतप्ता गता यत्र प्रजापतिः। आचख्युः सकलं वृत्तं दक्षस्याग्रे यथा तथम्

atha tāḥ śokasaṁtaptā gatā yatra prajāpatiḥ| ācakhyuḥ sakalaṁ vṛttaṁ dakṣasyāgre yathā tatham

Then those sisters, tormented with grief, went to where the lord of creatures, Daksha, was, and told him the whole event just as it had happened.

Verse 7 (skanda.5.80.7)

तच्छुत्वा दारुणं वाक्यं दक्षो नोवाच किंचन

tacchutvā dāruṇaṁ vākyaṁ dakṣo novāca kiṁcana

Hearing that dreadful news, Daksha said nothing at all.

Verse 8 (skanda.5.80.8)

मया दृष्टा यदा देवि भूमौ पंचत्वमागता। यज्ञप्रध्वंसनार्थाय तदा वै प्रेरिता गणाः

mayā dṛṣṭā yadā devi bhūmau paṁcatvamāgatā| yajñapradhvaṁsanārthāya tadā vai preritā gaṇāḥ

When I, O Devi, saw that you had met your death upon the earth, then I sent forth my ganas to destroy that sacrifice.

Verse 9 (skanda.5.80.9)

ते गत्वाथ गणा रौद्राः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। विरूपा भीषणा रौद्रा नानाशस्त्रा महाबलाः। मुमुचुः शरवर्षाणि कुर्वंतो भैरवान्रवान्

te gatvātha gaṇā raudrāḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ| virūpā bhīṣaṇā raudrā nānāśastrā mahābalāḥ| mumucuḥ śaravarṣāṇi kurvaṁto bhairavānravān

Those fierce ganas, in their hundreds and thousands, deformed, terrifying, armed with various weapons and mighty in strength, went there and let loose showers of arrows, uttering fearsome roars.

Verse 10 (skanda.5.80.10)

ततो देवगणाः सर्वे वसवः सह भास्करैः। विश्वेदेवाश्च साध्याश्च धनुर्हस्ता महाबलाः

tato devagaṇāḥ sarve vasavaḥ saha bhāskaraiḥ| viśvedevāśca sādhyāśca dhanurhastā mahābalāḥ

Then all the hosts of gods, the Vasus together with the Adityas, the Vishvedevas and the Sadhyas — all bow-bearing and mighty —

Verse 11 (skanda.5.80.11)

युद्धाय च विनिष्क्रांता मुमुचुः सायकान्सितान्। ते समेत्याथ युयुधुः प्रमथा विबुधैः सह। मुमुचुः शरवर्षाणि वारिधारा यथा घनाः

yuddhāya ca viniṣkrāṁtā mumucuḥ sāyakānsitān| te sametyātha yuyudhuḥ pramathā vibudhaiḥ saha| mumucuḥ śaravarṣāṇi vāridhārā yathā ghanāḥ

— sallied forth for battle and let loose their white arrows; then the pramathas and the gods, having met, fought each other, pouring down showers of arrows as clouds pour down streams of water.

Verse 12 (skanda.5.80.12)

तेषां मध्ये गणो नाम वीरभद्रो महाबलः। स शक्रं ताडयामास शूलेन हृदये तथा

teṣāṁ madhye gaṇo nāma vīrabhadro mahābalaḥ| sa śakraṁ tāḍayāmāsa śūlena hṛdaye tathā

Among them, the mighty gana named Virabhadra struck Indra in the heart with his trident.

Verse 13 (skanda.5.80.13)

स तु तेन प्रहारेण विसंज्ञो निषसाद ह। अथ मुष्ट्या हतः कुम्भे नाग ऐरावतस्तथा

sa tu tena prahāreṇa visaṁjño niṣasāda ha| atha muṣṭyā hataḥ kumbhe nāga airāvatastathā

Struck by that blow, Indra fell down unconscious; and the elephant king Airavata too was struck on the temple with a fist.

Verse 14 (skanda.5.80.14)

स हतः सहसा तेन गजेंद्रो भेरवान्रवान्। विनदन्भयमास्थाय यज्ञवाटमुपाद्रवत्

sa hataḥ sahasā tena gajeṁdro bheravānravān| vinadanbhayamāsthāya yajñavāṭamupādravat

Struck thus, the lord of elephants, uttering terrifying cries, fled in fear from the sacrificial enclosure.

Verse 15 (skanda.5.80.15)

एतस्मिन्नंतरे देवा कृतास्तेन पराङ्मुखाः। ततस्ते शरणं जग्मुर्विष्णुं विश्वैकनायकम्

etasminnaṁtare devā kṛtāstena parāṅmukhāḥ| tataste śaraṇaṁ jagmurviṣṇuṁ viśvaikanāyakam

Meanwhile the gods were turned back and routed by him; then they went for refuge to Vishnu, the sole lord of the universe.

Verse 16 (skanda.5.80.16)

ततः कोपसमाविष्टो विष्णुर्दृष्ट्वा दिवालयान्। गणैर्विद्रावितान्सर्वान्मुमोचाशु सुदर्शनम्

tataḥ kopasamāviṣṭo viṣṇurdṛṣṭvā divālayān| gaṇairvidrāvitānsarvānmumocāśu sudarśanam

Then, filled with anger, seeing all the dwellers of heaven routed by the ganas, Vishnu swiftly hurled his Sudarshana discus.

Verse 17 (skanda.5.80.17)

तदापतत्तु वेगेन चक्रं विष्णोः सुदर्शनम्। प्रसार्य वक्त्रं सहसा ह्युदरस्थं चकार ह

tadāpatattu vegena cakraṁ viṣṇoḥ sudarśanam| prasārya vaktraṁ sahasā hyudarasthaṁ cakāra ha

Then, as Vishnu's Sudarshana discus came flying with great speed, I opened my mouth wide and at once swallowed it into my belly.

Verse 18 (skanda.5.80.18)

तस्मिंश्चक्रे तदा ग्रस्ते ह्यमोघे दैत्यसूदने। क्रुद्धो नारायणो देवि वीरभद्रमुपाद्रवत्

tasmiṁścakre tadā graste hyamoghe daityasūdane| kruddho nārāyaṇo devi vīrabhadramupādravat

When that unfailing discus, slayer of demons, was thus swallowed, then, O Devi, the enraged Narayana rushed upon Virabhadra.

Verse 19 (skanda.5.80.19)

गृहीत्वा पादयोर्भूमौ निजघानातिदूरतः। हन्यमानस्याथ भूमौ गदया च सुदर्शनम्

gṛhītvā pādayorbhūmau nijaghānātidūrataḥ| hanyamānasyātha bhūmau gadayā ca sudarśanam

Seizing him by the feet, he flung him far upon the ground, and as he lay there struck him again with the mace, and struck Sudarshana too.

Verse 20 (skanda.5.80.20)

रुधिरोद्गारसंयुक्तं वक्त्रात्तच्च विनिर्गतम्। मत्तो लब्धवरो देवि वीरभद्रो गणोत्तमः। न तु पंचत्वमापन्नो गदया ताडितोऽपि सः

rudhirodgārasaṁyuktaṁ vaktrāttacca vinirgatam| matto labdhavaro devi vīrabhadro gaṇottamaḥ| na tu paṁcatvamāpanno gadayā tāḍito'pi saḥ

Mingled with blood, that discus came forth again from my mouth; O Devi, Virabhadra, foremost of my ganas, who had received a boon from me, though struck with the mace, did not meet his death.

Verse 21 (skanda.5.80.21)

ततस्तु प्रमथाः सर्वे विष्णुवीर्यबलार्द्दिताः। कृच्छ्रेण सहसा प्राप्ता यत्राहं देवि संस्थितः

tatastu pramathāḥ sarve viṣṇuvīryabalārdditāḥ| kṛcchreṇa sahasā prāptā yatrāhaṁ devi saṁsthitaḥ

Then all the pramathas, distressed by the might and strength of Vishnu, with great difficulty and in haste, O Devi, reached the place where I stood.

Verse 22 (skanda.5.80.22)

मां दृष्ट्वा शूलहस्तं तु विष्णुश्चांतरधीयत। इंद्रोऽपि त्रिदशैः सार्द्धं पितृभिर्ब्राह्मणैः सह

māṁ dṛṣṭvā śūlahastaṁ tu viṣṇuścāṁtaradhīyata| iṁdro'pi tridaśaiḥ sārddhaṁ pitṛbhirbrāhmaṇaiḥ saha

Seeing me, trident in hand, Vishnu vanished from sight; Indra too, together with the gods, the ancestors, and the brahmins —

Verse 23 (skanda.5.80.23)

मत्तस्त्रासपरीतात्मा ततश्चादर्शनं गतः। एवं विध्वंसिते यज्ञे नष्टो देवगणो यदा

mattastrāsaparītātmā tataścādarśanaṁ gataḥ| evaṁ vidhvaṁsite yajñe naṣṭo devagaṇo yadā

— gripped by terror of me, likewise vanished from sight. Thus, when the sacrifice had been destroyed and the host of gods had fled —

Verse 24 (skanda.5.80.24)

मया निरूपितो देवि स्वर्गद्वारे गणस्तदा। प्रवेशो नैव दातव्यस्त्रिदशानां गणेश्वर

mayā nirūpito devi svargadvāre gaṇastadā| praveśo naiva dātavyastridaśānāṁ gaṇeśvara

— then I, O Devi, stationed a gana at the gate of heaven, and commanded: "O lord of the ganas, entry must never be given to the gods."

Verse 25 (skanda.5.80.25)

द्वारावरोधः कर्त्तव्यो यत्नतः शासनान्मम। यः कोपि दृश्यते देवः स हंतव्यो न संशयः

dvārāvarodhaḥ karttavyo yatnataḥ śāsanānmama| yaḥ kopi dṛśyate devaḥ sa haṁtavyo na saṁśayaḥ

"By my command, the gate must be diligently barred; whatever god is seen there is without doubt to be slain."

Verse 26 (skanda.5.80.26)

उद्वसश्च ततो जातः स्वर्गो देवा विनिर्जिताः। स्वर्गद्वारे निरुद्धे तु शक्राद्या भयविह्वलाः

udvasaśca tato jātaḥ svargo devā vinirjitāḥ| svargadvāre niruddhe tu śakrādyā bhayavihvalāḥ

Then heaven became desolate and the gods were utterly defeated; with the gate of heaven barred, Indra and the others were overcome with fear.

Verse 27 (skanda.5.80.27)

ब्रह्मलोकं गता देवा मंत्रयित्वा पुनःपुनः। तस्याग्रे कथितं सर्वं स्वर्गद्वारावरोधनम्

brahmalokaṁ gatā devā maṁtrayitvā punaḥpunaḥ| tasyāgre kathitaṁ sarvaṁ svargadvārāvarodhanam

Having deliberated again and again, the gods went to the world of Brahma, and told him all that had happened, the barring of the gate of heaven.

Verse 28 (skanda.5.80.28)

महेश्वरगणैर्व्याप्तं स्वर्गद्वारं पितामह। प्रवेशो दुर्लभो जातः कृते द्वारावरोधने

maheśvaragaṇairvyāptaṁ svargadvāraṁ pitāmaha| praveśo durlabho jātaḥ kṛte dvārāvarodhane

They said: "O Grandsire, the gate of heaven is now filled with the ganas of Maheshvara; with the gate thus barred, entry has become impossible."

Verse 29 (skanda.5.80.29)

केनोपायेन यास्यामः स्वर्गलोकं तथाविधम्। नास्माकं जायते प्रीतिर्विना स्वर्गं पितामह

kenopāyena yāsyāmaḥ svargalokaṁ tathāvidham| nāsmākaṁ jāyate prītirvinā svargaṁ pitāmaha

"By what means shall we go to that heaven-world? O Grandsire, without heaven we find no peace of mind."

Verse 30 (skanda.5.80.30)

इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा प्रोक्तं तु ब्रह्मणा तदा। आराध्यः शंकरो देवो महादेवो जगत्पतिः

iti teṣāṁ vacaḥ śrutvā proktaṁ tu brahmaṇā tadā| ārādhyaḥ śaṁkaro devo mahādevo jagatpatiḥ

Hearing their words, Brahma then said: "The god Shankara, Mahadeva, lord of the world — he alone is to be worshipped."

Verse 31 (skanda.5.80.31)

स्तुत्यो वंद्यो नमस्कार्यः सृष्टि संहारकारकः। दुर्लभस्तु सुराः स्वर्गो विना तस्य प्रसादतः

stutyo vaṁdyo namaskāryaḥ sṛṣṭi saṁhārakārakaḥ| durlabhastu surāḥ svargo vinā tasya prasādataḥ

"He is worthy of praise, of homage, of salutation, the maker of creation and dissolution; O gods, without his grace heaven is unattainable."

Verse 32 (skanda.5.80.32)

गोप्ता स्रष्टा समर्थश्च स चास्माकं परा गतिः। स एवाराधनीयस्तु स च पूज्यतमो मतः

goptā sraṣṭā samarthaśca sa cāsmākaṁ parā gatiḥ| sa evārādhanīyastu sa ca pūjyatamo mataḥ

"He is the protector, the creator, the capable one, he is our supreme resort; he alone is to be worshipped, and he is held to be most venerable of all."

Verse 33 (skanda.5.80.33)

तस्मात्सर्वप्रयत्नेन गम्यतां शरणं शिवः। उपायं कथयिष्यामि श्रूयतां सावधानतः

tasmātsarvaprayatnena gamyatāṁ śaraṇaṁ śivaḥ| upāyaṁ kathayiṣyāmi śrūyatāṁ sāvadhānataḥ

"Therefore, with every effort, go to Shiva for refuge; I shall tell you the means — listen carefully."

Verse 34 (skanda.5.80.34)

त्रिदशैः सहितः शक्र तूर्णं गच्छ ममाज्ञया। महाकालवने रम्ये कपालेश्वरपूर्वतः

tridaśaiḥ sahitaḥ śakra tūrṇaṁ gaccha mamājñayā| mahākālavane ramye kapāleśvarapūrvataḥ

"O Shakra, together with the gods, go swiftly by my command to the lovely Mahakala forest, to the east of Kapaleshvara —"

Verse 35 (skanda.5.80.35)

स्वर्गद्वार परं लिंगं विद्यते तत्तु वासव। लोकानामनुकंपार्थं महादेवेन निर्मितम्। तमाराधयत क्षिप्रं स वः कामं प्रदास्यति

svargadvāra paraṁ liṁgaṁ vidyate tattu vāsava| lokānāmanukaṁpārthaṁ mahādevena nirmitam| tamārādhayata kṣipraṁ sa vaḥ kāmaṁ pradāsyati

"— there, O Vasava, stands the supreme linga called Svargadvara, fashioned by Mahadeva out of compassion for the worlds; worship it swiftly, and it shall grant you your desire."

Verse 36 (skanda.5.80.36)

ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा त्रिदशा मुदिता भृशम्। समायाता महादेवि महाकालवनं तदा

brahmaṇo vacanaṁ śrutvā tridaśā muditā bhṛśam| samāyātā mahādevi mahākālavanaṁ tadā

Hearing Brahma's words, the gods rejoiced greatly, and, O Mahadevi, then came to the Mahakala forest.

Verse 37 (skanda.5.80.37)

स्वर्गद्वारप्रदं पुण्यं ददृशुर्लिंगमुत्तमम्। तस्य दर्शनमात्रेण स्वर्गद्वारमपावृतम्

svargadvārapradaṁ puṇyaṁ dadṛśurliṁgamuttamam| tasya darśanamātreṇa svargadvāramapāvṛtam

They beheld that sacred, supreme linga which grants the door to heaven; and by the mere sight of it, the gate of heaven opened wide.

Verse 38 (skanda.5.80.38)

स्वर्गलोकं गताः सर्वे यथापूर्वं यशस्विनि। निःशंकांस्त्रिदशान्दृष्ट्वा विज्ञप्तोहं गणैस्तदा

svargalokaṁ gatāḥ sarve yathāpūrvaṁ yaśasvini| niḥśaṁkāṁstridaśāndṛṣṭvā vijñaptohaṁ gaṇaistadā

O glorious one, all of them went to the heaven-world as before; and seeing the gods now fearless, my ganas then reported it to me.

Verse 39 (skanda.5.80.39)

मयाज्ञप्ताश्च ते सर्वे निवर्त्तध्वं गणोत्तमाः। स्वयमेव प्रतिज्ञातं कथं मिथ्या भविष्यति

mayājñaptāśca te sarve nivarttadhvaṁ gaṇottamāḥ| svayameva pratijñātaṁ kathaṁ mithyā bhaviṣyati

I commanded them all: "O best of ganas, now withdraw; how could what I myself have promised turn out false?"

Verse 40 (skanda.5.80.40)

स्वर्गद्वारप्रदो देवो दृष्टो देवैर्न संशयः। महाकालवने रम्ये कथितो हि विरंचिना

svargadvāraprado devo dṛṣṭo devairna saṁśayaḥ| mahākālavane ramye kathito hi viraṁcinā

"The god who grants the door to heaven has indeed been beheld by the gods, without doubt; it was Brahma himself who spoke of him in the lovely Mahakala forest."

Verse 41 (skanda.5.80.41)

स्वर्गद्वारं गताः सद्यः शक्राद्यास्त्रिदशा गणाः। अतः प्रभृति विख्यातः स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरः शिवः

svargadvāraṁ gatāḥ sadyaḥ śakrādyāstridaśā gaṇāḥ| ataḥ prabhṛti vikhyātaḥ svargadvāreśvaraḥ śivaḥ

Indra and the other hosts of gods went at once to the gate of heaven; from then on this Shiva became renowned as Svargadvareshvara.

Verse 42 (skanda.5.80.42)

ख्यातिं यास्यति भूलोके स्वर्गलोकप्रदायकः। ये पश्यंति नरा लोके स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरं शिवम्

khyātiṁ yāsyati bhūloke svargalokapradāyakaḥ| ye paśyaṁti narā loke svargadvāreśvaraṁ śivam

He shall become renowned on earth as the giver of the heaven-world; those men in this world who behold Shiva Svargadvareshvara —

Verse 43 (skanda.5.80.43)

ते यांति स्वर्गलोकं हि स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरार्चनात्। स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरं देवं ये पश्यंति प्रसंगतः

te yāṁti svargalokaṁ hi svargadvāreśvarārcanāt| svargadvāreśvaraṁ devaṁ ye paśyaṁti prasaṁgataḥ

— go indeed to the heaven-world through the worship of Svargadvareshvara; those who behold the god Svargadvareshvara even incidentally —

Verse 44 (skanda.5.80.44)

न तेषां भयमस्तीति कल्प कोटिशतैरपि। अश्वमेधसहस्रेण यत्पुण्यं समुदाहृतम्

na teṣāṁ bhayamastīti kalpa koṭiśatairapi| aśvamedhasahasreṇa yatpuṇyaṁ samudāhṛtam

— for them there is no fear even for a hundred million kalpas; whatever merit is declared to come from a thousand horse-sacrifices —

Verse 45 (skanda.5.80.45)

तत्पुण्यमधिकं देवि स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरार्चनात्। जन्मांतरसहस्रेण यत्पापं पूर्व संचितम्

tatpuṇyamadhikaṁ devi svargadvāreśvarārcanāt| janmāṁtarasahasreṇa yatpāpaṁ pūrva saṁcitam

— that merit, O Devi, is exceeded by the worship of Svargadvareshvara. Whatever sin has been accumulated over a thousand former births —

Verse 46 (skanda.5.80.46)

यत्पापं विलयं यांति लिंगस्यास्य च कीर्तनात्। अष्टम्यां वा चतुर्दश्यामथवा चंद्रवासरे

yatpāpaṁ vilayaṁ yāṁti liṁgasyāsya ca kīrtanāt| aṣṭamyāṁ vā caturdaśyāmathavā caṁdravāsare

— that sin dissolves through the mere recitation of this linga's name. On the eighth, or the fourteenth, or on Monday —

Verse 47 (skanda.5.80.47)

ये पश्यंति नरा भक्त्या स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरं शिवम्। ते देवि मे शरीरं तु प्रविष्टास्त्वपुनर्भवाः

ye paśyaṁti narā bhaktyā svargadvāreśvaraṁ śivam| te devi me śarīraṁ tu praviṣṭāstvapunarbhavāḥ

— those men who behold Shiva Svargadvareshvara with devotion, O Devi, enter into my very body and are freed from rebirth.

Verse 48 (skanda.5.80.48)

दशकोटिसहस्राणि तस्मिँल्लिंगे तु पूजिते। पूजितानि भवं तीह लिंगान्यंतःस्थितानि तु

daśakoṭisahasrāṇi tasmi~lliṁge tu pūjite| pūjitāni bhavaṁ tīha liṁgānyaṁtaḥsthitāni tu

When that linga is worshipped, a hundred billion lingas that dwell within it are thereby worshipped as well.

Verse 49 (skanda.5.80.49)

स्पर्शनात्तस्य लिंगस्य कीर्त्तनाद्यजनात्तथा। सुखेन स्वर्गमायांति यथा कामानवाप्नुयात्

sparśanāttasya liṁgasya kīrttanādyajanāttathā| sukhena svargamāyāṁti yathā kāmānavāpnuyāt

By touching, praising, and worshipping this linga, men attain heaven with ease, and obtain whatever they desire.

Verse 50 (skanda.5.80.50)

अकामावा सकामा वा ये पश्यंति दिने दिने। तेऽपि पुण्या महाभागा स्वर्गलोकं प्रयांति वै

akāmāvā sakāmā vā ye paśyaṁti dine dine| te'pi puṇyā mahābhāgā svargalokaṁ prayāṁti vai

Those who behold it day after day, whether with desire or without desire, they too, meritorious and greatly fortunate, attain the world of heaven.

Verse 51 (skanda.5.80.51)

एष ते कथितो देवि प्रभावः पापनाशनः। स्वर्गद्वारेश्वरस्यायं शृणु कर्कोटकेश्वरम्
