Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 10
The Supremacy of Prabhasa over All Sacred Fields
Verse 1 (skanda.7.10.1)
īśvara uvāca| anyacca kathayiṣyāmi rahasyaṁ tava bhāmini| yatra kasya cidākhyātaṁ tatte vacmi varānane
Īśvara said: I shall now tell you another secret, O radiant one. What has been told to no one else, that I shall tell you, O fair-faced one.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.10.2)
pṛthvībhāge sthito brahmā apāṁ bhāge janārddanaḥ| tejobhāgasthito rudro vāyubhāge tatheśvaraḥ
Brahmā abides in the portion of earth, Janārdana in the portion of water, Rudra in the portion of fire, and Īśvara in the portion of wind.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.10.3)
ākāśabhāgasaṁsthāne sthitaḥ sākṣātsadāśivaḥ
In the abode of the portion of space, Sadāśiva himself abides.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.10.4)
Whatever sacred fords exist within each such portion, in each of them, without doubt, that same Lord is to be remembered.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.10.5)
chāgalaṁḍaṁ dugaṇḍaṁ ca mākoṭaṁ maṇḍaleśvaram| kāliṁjaraṁ vanaṁ caiva śaṁkukarṇaṁ sthaleśvaram
Chāgalaṇḍa, Dugaṇḍa, Mākoṭa, and Maṇḍaleśvara, and the forest of Kāliñjara, Śaṅkukarṇa, and Sthaleśvara.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.10.6)
śūleśvaraṁ ca vikhyātaṁ pṛthvītattve ca saṁsthitam| hariścandraṁ ca śrīśailaṁ jalpeśonnāṁtikeśvaram
and the renowned Śūleśvara — these abide in the principle of earth. Hariścandra, Śrīśaila, Jalpeśa, and Unnāntikeśvara.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.10.7)
mahākālaṁ madhyamaṁ ca kedāraṁ bhairavaṁ tathā| pavitrāṣṭakametaddhi jalasaṁsthaṁ varānane
Mahākāla, Madhyama, Kedāra, and Bhairava — this, O fair-faced one, is the sacred eightfold group established in the principle of water.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.10.8)
amareśaṁ prabhāsaṁ ca naimiṣaṁ puṣkaraṁ tathā| āṣāḍhiṁ caiva daṇḍiṁ ca bhārabhūtiṁ ca lāṁgalam
Amareśa, Prabhāsa, Naimiṣa, Puṣkara, Āṣāḍhi, Daṇḍi, Bhārabhūti, and Lāṅgala.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.10.9)
ādi guhyāṣṭakaṁ hyetattejastattve pratiṣṭhitam| gayā caiva kurukṣetraṁ tīrthaṁ kanakhalaṁ tathā
This first secret eightfold group is established in the principle of fire. Gayā, Kurukṣetra, and the ford of Kanakhala.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.10.10)
vimalaṁ cāṭṭahāsaṁ ca māhendraṁ bhīmasaṁjñakam| guhyādguhyataraṁ hyetatproktaṁ vāyvaṣṭakaṁ tava
Vimala, Aṭṭahāsa, Māhendra, and the one called Bhīma — this, more secret than the secret, is declared to you as the eightfold group of wind.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.10.11)
vastrāpathaṁ rudrakoṭirjyeṣṭheśvaraṁ mahālayam| gokarṇaṁ rudrakarṇaṁ ca varṇākhyaṁ sthāpasaṁjñakam
Vastrāpatha, Rudrakoṭi, Jyeṣṭheśvara, Mahālaya, Gokarṇa, Rudrakarṇa, the one called Varṇa, and the one named Sthāpa.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.10.12)
pavitrāṣṭakametaddhi ākāśasthaṁ varānane| etāni tattvatīrthāni sarvāṇi kathitāni vai
This sacred eightfold group, O fair-faced one, abides in the principle of space. All these element-fords have now been told to you.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.10.13)
yo yasmindevatā tattve sā tanmāhātmyasūcikā| audakaṁ ca mahātattvaṁ viṣṇoścātipriyaṁ priye
Whichever deity abides in whichever principle, that itself indicates its glory. The great principle of water, O beloved, is exceedingly dear to Viṣṇu.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.10.14)
jalaśāyī smṛtastena nārāyaṇa iti śrutiḥ| āpyatattvaṁ tu tīrthāni yāni proktāni te mayā
For this reason he is remembered in the scriptures as Nārāyaṇa, he who reclines on the waters. Whatever sacred fords belong to the principle of water, these have been told to you by me.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.10.15)
tāni priyāṇi deveśi dhruvaṁ nārāyaṇasya vai| audakaṁ caiva yattattvaṁ tasminprābhāsikaṁ smṛtam
These, O sovereign Goddess, are surely dear to Nārāyaṇa. And within that very principle of water, the Prābhāsika field is remembered.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.10.16)
tatra devo layaṁ yāti harirjanmanijanmani| sa vāsudevaḥ sūkṣmātmā parātparatare sthitaḥ
There the god Hari attains dissolution, birth after birth. He, Vāsudeva, subtle in essence, abides beyond even the supreme.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.10.17)
sa śivaḥ paramaṁ vyoma anādinidhano vibhuḥ| tasmātparataraṁ nāsti sarvaśāstrāgameṣu ca
He is Śiva, the supreme ether, without beginning or end, all-pervading. Beyond him there is nothing, in all scriptures and all sacred traditions.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.10.18)
siddhāṁtāgamavedāṁtadarśaneṣu viśeṣataḥ| teṣu caiva na bhinnastu mayā sārddhaṁ yaśasvini
Especially in the Siddhānta scriptures, the Āgamas, and the philosophy of Vedānta, O glorious one, he is not different from me.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.10.19)
tasminsthāne hariḥ sākṣātpratyakṣeṇa tu saṁsthitaḥ| liṁgaiścaturbhiḥ saṁyukto jñāyate na ca kenacit
In that place Hari abides visibly, directly present, joined with four liṅgas, yet known by no one.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.10.20)
mokṣārthaṁ naiṣṭhikairvarṇairvrataiścaiva tu yatphalam| tatphalaṁ samavāpnoti bhallukātīrthadarśanāt
Whatever fruit is obtained through vows kept faithfully by the disciplined orders for the sake of liberation, that same fruit is obtained merely by the sight of the Bhallukā ford.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.10.21)
gocarmamātraṁ tatsthānaṁ samaṁtātparimaṇḍalam| na hi kaścidvijānāti vinā śāstreṇa bhāmini
That place is circular, only the measure of a cow's hide all around. No one, O radiant one, knows it without the aid of scripture.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.10.22)
viṣuvaṁ vahate tatra nṛṇāmadyāpi pārvati| paṁcaliṁgāni tatraiva paṁcavaktrāṇi kāni cit
There, O Pārvatī, the equinoctial line still runs for men even today. There stand five liṅgas, some of them five-faced.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.10.23)
kukkuṭāṁḍakamānāni mahāsthūlāni kānicit| sarpeṇa veṣṭitānyeva cihnitāni triśūlibhiḥ
Some are the size of a hen's egg, some are massive in bulk; they are wreathed with serpents and marked with tridents.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.10.24)
teṣāṁ darśanamātreṇa koṭiliṁgārcanaphalam| tasmādidaṁ mahākṣetraṁ brahmādyaiḥ sevyate sadā
By the mere sight of them, the merit of worshipping ten million liṅgas is obtained. Therefore this great field is ever attended by Brahmā and other gods.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.10.25)
śrutimadbhiśca viprendraiḥ saṁsiddhaiśca tapasvibhiḥ| pratimāsaṁ tathāṣṭamyāṁ pratimāsaṁ caturdaśīm
By brāhmaṇas versed in scripture and by accomplished ascetics, every month on the eighth lunar day and every month on the fourteenth.
Verse 26 (skanda.7.10.26)
śaśibhānūparāge vā kārttikyāṁ tu viśeṣataḥ| prabhāsasthāni liṁgāni prapūjyaṁte varānane
or at a lunar or solar eclipse, and especially on the full moon of Kārtika, O fair-faced one, the liṅgas established in Prabhāsa are worshipped.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.10.27)
saṁnihatyāṁ kurukṣetre sarvastīrthāyutaiḥ saha| puṣkaraṁ naimiṣaṁ caivaṁ prayāgaṁ saṁpṛthūdakam
At Sannihatya in Kurukṣetra, together with all the myriad sacred fords, and also Puṣkara, Naimiṣa, Prayāga, and Pṛthūdaka.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.10.28)
ṣaṣṭi tīrthasahasrāṇi ṣaṣṭikoṭiśatāni ca| māghyāṁmāghyāṁ sameṣyaṁti sarasvatyabdhisaṁgame
Sixty thousand sacred fords, and six thousand million more, gather every month of Māgha at the confluence of the Sarasvatī and the ocean.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.10.29)
smaraṇāttasya tīrthasya nāmasaṁkīrtanādapi| mṛtyukālabhavādvāpi pāpaṁ tyakṣyati suvrate
By merely remembering that sacred ford, or even by chanting its name, O virtuous one, even the sin arising at the hour of death is destroyed.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.10.30)
ānarttasāraṁ saumyaṁ ca tathā bhuvanabhūṣaṇam| divyaṁ pāṁcanadaṁ puṇyamādiguhyaṁ mahodayam
Ānartasāra, Saumya, and also Bhuvanabhūṣaṇa, the divine Pāñcanada, the holy Ādiguhya, and Mahodaya.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.10.31)
siddha ratnākaraṁ nāma samudrāvaraṇaṁ tathā| dharmākāraṁ kalādhāraṁ śivagarbhagṛhaṁ tathā
The one named Siddharatnākara, and Samudrāvaraṇa, Dharmākāra, Kalādhāra, and Śivagarbhagṛha.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.10.32)
sarvadevaniveśaṁ ca sarvapātakanāśanam| asya kṣetrasya nāmāni kalpe kalpe pṛthakpriye
Sarvadevaniveśa, and Sarvapātakanāśana — these names of this field, O beloved, differ from kalpa to kalpa.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.10.33)
āyāmādīni jānīhi guhyāni surasundari| ādye kalpe purā devi pramodanamiti smṛtam
Know, O beautiful one among the gods, these secret matters of its extent and the rest. In the first kalpa, of old, O Goddess, it was remembered by the name Pramodana.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.10.34)
naṁdanaṁ paritastasya tasyāpi parataḥ śivam| śivātparataraṁ cograṁ bhadrikaṁ parataḥ punaḥ
After that, Nandana; beyond that again, Śiva; beyond Śiva, Ugra; and beyond that again, Bhadrika.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.10.35)
samiṁdhanaṁ paraṁ tasmātkāmadaṁ ca tataḥ param| siddhidaṁ cāpi dharmajñaṁ vaiśvarūpaṁ ca muktidam
After that, Samindhana, then Kāmada, and then Siddhida, Dharmajña, Vaiśvarūpa, and Muktida.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.10.36)
tathā śrīpadmanābhaṁ tu śrīvatsaṁ tu mahāprabham| tathā ca pāpasaṁhāraṁ sarvakāmapradaṁ tathā
And also Śrīpadmanābha, and the greatly splendrous Śrīvatsa, and also Pāpasaṁhāra, and Sarvakāmaprada.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.10.37)
mokṣamārgaṁ varā rohe tathā devi sudarśanam| dharmagarbhaṁ tu dharmāṇāṁ prabhāsaṁ pāpanāśanam| ataḥ paraṁ bhavaṁtīha utpalāvarttikāni ca
Mokṣamārga, O well-formed one, and also Sudarśana, Dharmagarbha, and Pāpanāśana Prabhāsa — beyond this, here too come the names Utpalāvartikas.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.10.38)
kṣetrasya madhye yaddevi mama garbhagṛhaṁ smṛtam| tasya nāmāni te devi kathitānyanupūrvaśaḥ
O Goddess, that which is remembered as my inner sanctum in the middle of the field — its names, O Goddess, have been told to you in order.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.10.39)
śrutvā nāmānyaśeṣāṇi kṣetramāhātmyameva ca| teṣāṁ tu vāṁchitā siddhirbhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
Having heard all these names and the glory of the field, their desired fulfillment will surely come to pass; of this there is no doubt.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.10.40)
etatkīrttayamānasya trikālaṁ tu mahodayam| saṁdhyākālāṁtaraṁ pāpamahorātraṁ vinaśyati
For one who recites this great and auspicious name at the three junctures of the day, sin committed within the interval between the twilight hours, even a day-and-night's sin, is destroyed.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.10.41)
api vai dāṁbhikāścaiva ye vasaṁtyalpabuddhayaḥ| mūḍhā jīvanikā viprāste'pi yāṁti mṛtā divam
Even the hypocritical and the dull-witted who dwell there, even foolish brāhmaṇas who live merely by their trade — they too, upon death, attain heaven.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.10.42)
asya kṣetrasya madhye tu raviyojanamadhyataḥ| upakṣetrāṇi deveśi saṁtyanyāni sahasraśaḥ
In the middle of this field, within the span of a single yojana, O sovereign Goddess, there exist a thousand other lesser fields.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.10.43)
kānicitpadmarūpāṇi yavākārāṇi kānicit| ṣaṭkoṇāni trikoṇāni daṇḍākārāṇi kānicit
Some are shaped like lotuses, some shaped like barley grains; some are hexagonal, some triangular, some rod-shaped.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.10.44)
caṁdrabiṁbārddhabhedāni caturasraprabhedataḥ| brahmādidaivatānīśe kṣetramadhye sthitāni tu
Some are in the shape of a half-moon, some differentiated as squares — in these, Brahmā and other deities abide within the Lord's field.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.10.45)
kānicidyojanārddhāni tadardhārdhāni kānicit| nivarttanapramāṇena daṇḍamānena kānicit
Some measure half a yojana, some half of that again; some are measured by the nivartana unit, some by the rod's length.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.10.46)
gocarmamānamadhyāni kānicidddhanuṣāṁtaram| yajñopavītamātrāṇi prabhāse saṁti koṭiśaḥ
Some are of the measure of a cow's hide, some the span of a bow's length; there are, in Prabhāsa, tens of millions even of the measure of a sacred thread.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.10.47)
aṁgulyaṣṭama bhāgo'pi nabhosti kamalekṣaṇe| na saṁti yasmiṁstīrthāni divyāni ca nabhastale
O lotus-eyed one, there is not even an eighth part of a finger's breadth of space in which sacred fords, even divine ones in the sky, are not present.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.10.48)
prabhāsakṣetramāsādya tiṣṭhaṁti pralayādanu| kedāre caiva yalliṁgaṁ yacca devi mahālaye
Having reached the field of Prabhāsa, they remain established even after the dissolution. Whatever liṅga exists at Kedāra, and whatever, O Goddess, at Mahālaya.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.10.49)
madhyameśvarasaṁsthaṁ ca tathā pāśupateśvaram| śaṁkukarṇeśvaraṁ caiva bhadreśvaramathāpi ca
And whatever liṅga is established at Madhyameśvara, and likewise at Pāśupateśvara, at Śaṅkukarṇeśvara, and also at Bhadreśvara.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.10.50)
someśvaramathaikāgraṁ kāleśvaramajeśvaram| bhairaveśvaramīśānaṁ tathā kāyāvarohaṇam
And whatever liṅga is at Someśvara, at Ekāgra, at Kāleśvara, at Ajeśvara, at Bhairaveśvara, at Īśāna, and at Kāyāvarohaṇa.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.10.51)
cāpaṭeśvarakaṁ puṇyaṁ tathā badarikāśramam| rudrakoṭirmahākoṭistathā śrīparvataṁ śubham
And at holy Cāpaṭeśvaraka, at Badarikāśrama, at Rudrakoṭi, at Mahākoṭi, and at auspicious Śrīparvata.
Verse 52 (skanda.7.10.52)
kapālī caiva deveśaḥ karavīraṁ tathā punaḥ| oṁkāraṁ paramaṁ puṇyaṁ vaśiṣṭhāśramameva ca| yatra koṭiḥ smṛtā devi rudrāṇāṁ kāmarūpiṇām
And the Lord Kapālī, and Karavīra, and the supremely holy Oṁkāra, and Vaśiṣṭhāśrama, where, O Goddess, a hundred million shape-shifting Rudras are remembered to dwell.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.10.53)
yāni cānyāni sthānāni puṇyāni mama bhūtale| prayāgaṁ purataḥ kṛtvā prabhāse nivasaṁti ca
And whatever other holy places of mine exist on this earth, placing Prayāga foremost, they too dwell within Prabhāsa.
Verse 54 (skanda.7.10.54)
uttare raviputrī tu dakṣiṇe sāgaraṁ smṛtam| dakṣiṇottaramāno'yaṁ kṣetrasyāsya prakīrttitaḥ
To the north is the daughter of the Sun, and to the south the ocean, as remembered. This is declared to be the field's measure from south to north.
Verse 55 (skanda.7.10.55)
rukmiṇyāḥ pūrvataścaiva taptatoyācca paścime| pūrvapaścimamāno'yaṁ prabhāsasya prakīrttitaḥ
From the Rukmiṇī river in the east, and from Taptatoyā in the west — this is declared to be the east-west measure of Prabhāsa.
Verse 56 (skanda.7.10.56)
etadaṁtaramāsādya tīrthāni surasundari| pātālādikaṭāhāṁtaṁ tāni tatra vasaṁti vai
Reaching within this span, O beautiful one among the gods, the sacred fords from the netherworlds up to the very rim of the cosmic shell dwell there.
Verse 57 (skanda.7.10.57)
evaṁ jñātvā mahādevi sarvadevamayo hariḥ| prabhāsakṣetramāsādya tatyāja svaṁ kalevaram
Knowing this, O great Goddess, Hari, who embodies all the gods, came to the field of Prabhāsa and gave up his own body.
