Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 11
The Origin of Rajabhattaraka
Verse 1 (skanda.7.11.1)
sūta uvāca| iti proktā tadā devi vismayotphullalocanā| romāṁcakañcukā subhrūḥ punaḥ papraccha bhūsurāḥ
Suta said: O brāhmaṇas, thus addressed, the Goddess's eyes widened in wonder; her skin thrilling with rapture, the fair-browed one asked again.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.11.2)
devyuvāca| dhanyā'haṁ kṛtapuṇyā'haṁ tapaḥ sucaritaṁ mayā| yadeṣa kṣetra mahimā mahādevānmayā śrutaḥ
The Goddess said: I am blessed, I have earned merit, my austerity has borne fruit, for I have heard this glory of the field from the great God himself.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.11.3)
bhagavandevadeveśa saṁsārārṇavatāraka| pṛṣṭaṁ tu yanmayā pūrvaṁ tatsarvaṁ kathitaṁ hara
O blessed one, O God of gods, O ferryman across the ocean of worldly existence, O Hara, whatever I asked before, all of that you have told.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.11.4)
punaśca devadeveśa tvadvākyāmṛtaraṁjitā| na tṛptimadhigacchāmi devadeva maheśvara
And yet, O God of gods, though delighted by the nectar of your words, I do not attain satiety, O Maheśvara, God of gods.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.11.5)
kiṁcitpraṣṭumanāścāsmi prabhāsakṣetravistaram| tanme kathaya kāmeśa dayāṁ kṛtvā jagatprabho
I wish to ask something more about the extent of the field of Prabhāsa. Tell it to me, O lord of desire, O lord of the world, showing your compassion.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.11.6)
īśvara uvāca| pṛthivyā madhyagarbhasthaṁ jaṁbūdvīpamiti smṛtam| tacca vai navadhā bhinnaṁ varṣabhedena sundari
Īśvara said: The continent situated in the very womb-center of the earth is known as Jambūdvīpa. It is, O beautiful one, divided ninefold by its regions.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.11.7)
tasyādyaṁ bhārataṁ varṣaṁ taccāpi navadhā smṛtam| navayojanasāhasraṁ dakṣiṇottaramānataḥ
Its first region is Bhāratavarṣa, which itself is reckoned as ninefold. It measures nine thousand yojanas from south to north.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.11.8)
aśītiśca sahasrāṇi pūrvapaścāyataṁ smṛtam| uttare himavānasti kṣīrodo dakṣiṇe smṛtaḥ
It is reckoned as eighty thousand yojanas in extent from east to west. To the north is the Himālaya, and to the south is remembered the Ocean of Milk.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.11.9)
etasminnaṁtare devi bhārataṁ kṣetramuttamam| kṛtaṁ tretā dvāparaṁ ca tiṣyaṁ yugacatuṣṭayam
Within this span, O Goddess, lies the supreme field called Bhārata, where the four ages occur — Kṛta, Tretā, Dvāpara, and Tiṣya (Kali).
Verse 10 (skanda.7.11.10)
atraivaiṣā yugāvasthā caturvarṇaśca vai janaḥ| catvāri trīṇi ca dve ca tathaivaika śaracchatam
Here alone occurs this succession of ages, and here dwell people of the four social orders — four hundred, three hundred, two hundred, and a hundred years respectively.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.11.11)
jīvantyatra narā devi kṛtatretādiṣu kramāt| yadetatpārthivaṁ padmaṁ catuṣpatraṁ mayoditam
Men here live, in Kṛta, Tretā, and the other ages respectively, for those spans. This earthly lotus, as I have described, has four petals.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.11.12)
varṣāṇi bhāratādyāni patrāṇyasya caturddiśam| bhārataṁ ketumālaṁ ca kuru bhadrāśvameva ca
Bhārata and the other regions are its petals in the four directions — Bhārata, Ketumāla, Kuru, and Bhadrāśva.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.11.13)
bhārataṁ nāma yadvarṣaṁ dākṣiṇātyaṁ mayoditam| dakṣiṇāparato yasya pūrveṇa ca mahodadhiḥ| himavānuttareṇāsya kārmukasya yathā guṇaḥ
The region called Bhārata, as I have described, lies to the south; to its southwest and east is the great ocean, and to its north the Himālaya, like the string of a bow.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.11.14)
tadetadbhārataṁ varṣaṁ sarvabījaṁ varānane| tatkarmabhūmirnānyatra saṁprāptiḥ puṇyapāpayoḥ
This very Bhāratavarṣa, O fair-faced one, is the seed of all; it alone is the land of action — merit and sin are not obtained elsewhere.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.11.15)
devānāmapi deveśi sadaivaiṣa manorathaḥ| api mānuṣyamāpsyāmo bhārate pratyuta kṣitau
O sovereign Goddess, even the gods ever cherish this wish — that we might attain a human birth on the soil of Bhārata.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.11.16)
bhadrāśve'śvaśirā viṣṇurbhārate kūrmasaṁsthitaḥ| varāhaḥ ketumāle ca matsyarūpastathottare
In Bhadrāśva Viṣṇu abides as horse-headed, in Bhārata as the tortoise, in Ketumāla as the boar, and in the northern region as the fish.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.11.17)
teṣu nakṣatravinyāsādviṣayāḥ samavasthitāḥ| caturṣvapi mahādevi vigraho nava pādakaḥ
Within these, regions are established according to the arrangement of the lunar constellations. In all four, O great Goddess, the body is divided into nine parts.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.11.18)
bhārato yo mahādevi kūrmarūpeṇa saṁsthitaḥ| nakṣatragrahavinyāsaṁ tasya te kathayāmyaham
O great Goddess, that Bhārata which is established in the form of a tortoise — its arrangement of constellations and planets I shall now tell you.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.11.19)
prāṅmukho bhagavāndevo kūrmarūpī vyavasthitaḥ| ākramya bhārataṁ varṣaṁ navabhedamidaṁ priye
The blessed god, facing east, abides in tortoise form, encompassing the region of Bhārata, O beloved, which is here ninefold divided.
Verse 20 (skanda.7.11.20)
navadhā saṁsthitasyāsya nakṣatrāṇi nibodha me| kṛttikā rohiṇī saumyaṁ tṛtīyaṁ kūrmapṛṣṭhigam
Hear from me the constellations of this ninefold arrangement. Kṛttikā, Rohiṇī, and third, Saumya (Mṛgaśira) — these are placed on the tortoise's back.
Verse 21 (skanda.7.11.21)
raudraṁ punarvasuḥ puṣyaṁ nakṣatratritayaṁ mukhe| āśleṣākhyaṁ tathā paitraṁ phālgunī prathamā priye
Raudra (Ārdrā), Punarvasu, and Puṣya — this triad is at the mouth. Āśleṣā, and Paitra (Maghā), and the first Phalgunī, O beloved.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.11.22)
nakṣatratritayaṁ pādamāśritaṁ pūrvadakṣiṇam| phālgunī cottarā hastaṁ citrā carkṣatrayaṁ smṛtam
This triad rests upon the southeast foot. Uttara Phalgunī, Hasta, and Citrā — this triad is remembered.
Verse 23 (skanda.7.11.23)
kūrmasya dakṣiṇe kukṣau carkṣapādaṁ tathā'param| svātī viśākhā maitraṁ ca nairṛte tritayaṁ smṛtam
This is another constellation-foot on the tortoise's right flank. Svātī, Viśākhā, and Maitra (Anurādhā) — this triad is remembered in the southwest.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.11.24)
aiṁdraṁ mūlaṁ tathāṣāḍhā pṛṣṭhe tu tritayaṁ smṛtam| āṣāḍhā śravaṇaṁ caiva dhaniṣṭhā cātra śabditā
Aindra (Jyeṣṭhā), Mūla, and Āṣāḍhā — this triad is remembered on the back. Āṣāḍhā, Śravaṇa, and Dhaniṣṭhā are also named here.
Verse 25 (skanda.7.11.25)
nakṣatritrayaṁ pāde vāyavye tu yaśasvini| vāruṇaṁ caiva nakṣatraṁ tathā proṣṭhapadādvayam
This constellation-triad is in the northwest foot, O glorious one. The constellation Vāruṇa (Śatabhiṣā), and the two Proṣṭhapadas (Pūrva and Uttara Bhādrapada).
Verse 26 (skanda.7.11.26)
kūrmasya vāmakukṣau tu tritayaṁ saṁsthitaṁ priye| revatī cāśvidaivatyaṁ yāmyaṁ carkṣamiti trayam| īśapāde samākhyātaṁ śubhāśubhaphalaṁ śṛṇu
On the tortoise's left flank stands this triad, O beloved. Revatī, Aśvinī, and the one ruled by Yama (Bharaṇī) — this triad is declared in the northeast foot; now hear the auspicious and inauspicious results.
Verse 27 (skanda.7.11.27)
yasyarkṣasya patiryo vai grahastaddhainyato bhayam| taddeśasya mahādevi tathotkarṣe śubhāgamaḥ
Whatever planet rules a given constellation — from its affliction comes fear for that land, O great Goddess, and from its ascendancy comes an auspicious outcome.
Verse 28 (skanda.7.11.28)
eṣa kūrmo mayākhyāto bhārate bhagavāniha| nārāyaṇo hyaciṁtyātmā yatra sarvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam
This tortoise I have described to you is, here in Bhārata, the blessed Nārāyaṇa himself, of inconceivable nature, in whom everything is established.
Verse 29 (skanda.7.11.29)
meṣavṛṣau hṛdo madhye mukhe ca mithunādikau| prāgdakṣiṇe tathā pāde karkasiṁhau vyavasthitau
Aries and Taurus are in the middle of the heart, Gemini at the mouth. Cancer and Leo are situated in the southeast foot.
Verse 30 (skanda.7.11.30)
siṁhakanyātulāścaiva kukṣau rāśitrayaṁ smṛtam| ghaṭo'dha vṛścikāścobhau pāde dakṣiṇapaścime
Leo, Virgo, and Libra — this triad of signs is remembered at the flank. Below that, Scorpio — both are in the southwest foot.
Verse 31 (skanda.7.11.31)
pucche tu vṛścikaścaiva sadhanuśca vyavasthitaḥ| vāyavye vāmapāde ca dhanurgrāhādikaṁ trayam
At the tail, Scorpio together with Sagittarius are situated. In the northwest, at the left foot, Sagittarius and two others form a triad.
Verse 32 (skanda.7.11.32)
kumbha mīnau tathā cāsya uttarāṁ kukṣimāśritau| mīnameṣau mahādevi pāde pūrvottare sthitau
Aquarius and Pisces rest upon its northern flank. Pisces and Aries, O great Goddess, are situated in the northeast foot.
Verse 33 (skanda.7.11.33)
kūrmmadeśāṁstatharkṣāṇi deśeṣveteṣu vai priye| rāśayaśca tatharkṣeṣu grahā rāśivyavasthitāḥ
Within these regions of the tortoise, O beloved, lie the constellations; and within the same regions lie the zodiac signs, the signs within the constellations, and the planets established within the signs.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.11.34)
tasmādgraharkṣapīḍāsu deśapīḍāṁ vinirdiśet| tatra snānaṁ prakurvaṁti dānaṁ homādikaṁ tathā
Therefore, when the planets or constellations are afflicted, one should determine the affliction of the corresponding land. There people perform bathing, charity, and fire-offerings and the like.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.11.35)
sa eṣa vaiṣṇavaḥ pādo devi madhye graho'sya yaḥ| nārāyaṇākhyo'ciṁtyātmā kāraṇaṁ jagataḥ prabhuḥ
This is the foot belonging to Viṣṇu, O Goddess; the planet at its center, named Nārāyaṇa, of inconceivable nature, is the cause and Lord of the universe.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.11.36)
bhaumaśukrabudheṁdvarkabudhaśukramahīsutāḥ| gurumaṁdāsurācāryā meṣādīnāmadhīśvarāḥ
Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, the Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Śukra the teacher of demons — these are the lords of Aries and the other signs in order.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.11.37)
evaṁvidho mahādevi kūrmarūpī janārddanaḥ| tasya nairṛtapāde tu saurāṣṭra iti viśrutaḥ
Thus, O great Goddess, Janārdana abides in the form of the tortoise. At his southwest foot lies the land renowned as Saurāṣṭra.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.11.38)
sa caivaṁ navadhā bhinnaḥ purabhedena suṁdari| tasya yo navamo bhāgaḥ sāgarasya ca sannidhau
This too, O beautiful one, is ninefold divided by its towns. That ninth portion of it, near the ocean—
Verse 39 (skanda.7.11.39)
prabhāsa iti vikhyāto mama devi priyaḥ sadā| yojanānāṁ daśadve ca vistīrṇaḥ parimaṇḍalam
is renowned by the name Prabhāsa, O Goddess, ever dear to me, extending in a circular span of twelve yojanas.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.11.40)
madhyesya pīṭhikā proktā paṁcayojanavistṛtā| tanmadhye madgrahaṁ devi tiṣṭhatyudadhisaṁnidhau
In its middle is declared a sacred seat, five yojanas in extent. O Goddess, in the midst of that, my dwelling stands close to the ocean.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.11.41)
tasya madhye mahādevi liṁgarūpo vasāmyaham
In the middle of that, O great Goddess, I dwell in the form of the liṅga.
Verse 42 (skanda.7.11.42)
kṛtasmarātpaścimato dhanuṣāṁ ca śatatraye| vasāmi tatra deveśi tvayā saha varānane
To the west of the place of Kāma's burning, at a distance of three hundred bow-lengths, O sovereign Goddess, O fair-faced one, I dwell there together with you.
Verse 43 (skanda.7.11.43)
tanme sthānaṁ mahādevi kailāsādapi vallabham| gocarmamātraṁ tatrāpi mahāgopyaṁ varānane
That place of mine, O great Goddess, is dearer to me even than Kailāsa. There too, O fair-faced one, is a deeply secret spot, only the measure of a cow's hide.
Verse 44 (skanda.7.11.44)
akathyaṁ devadeveśi tava snehātprakāśitam| etatprābhāsikaṁ kṣetraṁ prabhayā dīpitaṁ mama
This is unspeakable, O sovereign Goddess, and is revealed only out of my affection for you. This Prābhāsika field is illumined by my own radiance.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.11.45)
tena prabhāsamityuktamādikalpe varānane| dvitīye tu prabhā labdhā sarvairdevaiḥ savāsavaiḥ
For this reason, in the first kalpa it was called Prabhāsa, O fair-faced one. In the second kalpa, all the gods together with Indra obtained radiance here.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.11.46)
mama prabhābhā deveśi tena prābhāsikaṁ smṛtam| prabhāvavanto deveśi yatra saṁti mahāsurāḥ
From the gleam of my own radiance, O sovereign Goddess, it is remembered as Prābhāsika — where, O sovereign Goddess, dwell great and powerful demons too.
Verse 47 (skanda.7.11.47)
athavā tena lokeṣu prabhāsamiti kīrtyate| prathamaṁ bhāsate devi sarveṣāṁ bhuvi tejasām| tīrthānāmāditīrthaṁ yatprabhāsaṁ tena kīrttitam
Or else it is celebrated in the world as Prabhāsa for this reason: O Goddess, it shines forth first among all the luminous things on earth; being the foremost of sacred fords, it is thus called Prabhāsa.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.11.48)
prakṛṣṭaṁ bhānurathavā bhāsito viśvakarmaṇā| yatra sākṣātprabhāpāto jātaḥ prābhāsikaṁ tataḥ
Or else, here the Sun was made supremely radiant by Viśvakarman; where the fall of radiance itself occurred, from that it is called Prābhāsika.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.11.49)
athavā dakṣasaṁśaptenendunā niṣprabheṇaca| tatra devi prabhā labdhā tena prābhāsikaṁ smṛtam| proddadhe bhāratī devī hyaurvāgniṁ vaḍavānalam
Or else, the Moon, cursed by Dakṣa and rendered without radiance, regained his radiance there — for this reason it is remembered as Prābhāsika. The goddess Bhāratī there bore the fire of Aurva, the submarine flame.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.11.50)
athavā tena deveśi prabhāsamiti kīrtyate| prakṛṣṭā bhāratī brāhmī viproktā śrūyate'dhvani| sadā yatra mahādevi prabhāsaṁ tena kīrtitam
Or else, O sovereign Goddess, it is celebrated as Prabhāsa for this reason too: here the supreme Brāhmī speech, uttered by the learned, is ever heard along the way, O great Goddess — for this it is called Prabhāsa.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.11.51)
prollasadvīcibhirbhāti sarvadā sāgaraḥ priye| tena prabhāsa nāmeti triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam
O beloved, the ocean here ever gleams with its joyous rolling waves; for this reason the name Prabhāsa became renowned in the three worlds.
Verse 52 (skanda.7.11.52)
pratyakṣaṁ bhāskaro yatra sadā tiṣṭhati bhāmini| tena prabhāsa nāmeti prasiddhimagamatkṣitau
O radiant one, where the Sun himself abides ever visibly present, for this reason the name Prabhāsa attained fame upon the earth.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.11.53)
prakṛṣṭaṁ bhāvināṁ sarvaṁ kāmaṁ tatra dadāmyaham| tena prabhāsanāmeti tīrthaṁ trailokyaviśrutam
There I grant every excellent wish of the devout; for this reason this sacred ford, named Prabhāsa, is renowned throughout the three worlds.
Verse 54 (skanda.7.11.54)
kalpabhedena nāmāni tathaiva surasundari| niruktabhedairbahudhā bhidyaṁte kāraṇaiḥ priye| prabhāsamiti yannāma dātavyaṁ niścalaṁ smṛtam
Thus, O beautiful one among the gods, the names change through the differing kalpas, O beloved, through many etymological distinctions and causes; yet the name Prabhāsa is remembered as the one fixed and unchanging name to be given.
Verse 55 (skanda.7.11.55)
aptattve saṁsthitaṁ devi viṣṇorādyakalevare| iti te kathitaṁ devi saṁkṣepātkṣetrakāraṇam
It is established in the principle of water, O Goddess, within the primeval body of Viṣṇu. Thus, O Goddess, I have told you in brief the cause of this field.
Verse 56 (skanda.7.11.56)
punaste kathayāmyadya yatpṛcchasi varānane| tadbrūhi śīghraṁ kalyāṇi yatte manasi vartate
Now I shall tell you again whatever you wish to ask, O fair-faced one. Tell it quickly, O auspicious one, whatever is in your mind.

It was as though a monthly darkness had come upon her limbs. And Saṁjñā, whenever gazed upon by the Sun, would close her eyes. Because of this, the Sun, angered, spoke these words to Saṁjñā.
Verse 81 (skanda.7.11.81)

Verse 84 (skanda.7.11.84)
īśvara uvāca| tatastasyāstu saṁjajñe bhartṛśāpena tena vai| yamaśca yamunā ceyaṁ prakhyātā sumahānadī| tṛtīyaṁ ca sutaṁ jajñe śrāddhadevaṁ manuṁ śubham
Īśvara said: Then, from that curse of her husband, were born from her Yama and this renowned great river Yamunā. As a third child she bore the auspicious Śrāddhadeva Manu.
Verse 85 (skanda.7.11.85)
sāpi saṁjñā ravestejo golākāraṁ mahāprabham| asahantī ca sā citte ciṁtayāmāsa vai tadā
That Saṁjñā, too, was unable to endure the Sun's great, globe-shaped radiance, and then she pondered within her mind.
Verse 86 (skanda.7.11.86)
kiṁ karomi kva yāsyāmi kva gatāyāśca nirvṛtiḥ| bhavenmama kathaṁ bhartā kopamarkkaśca neṣyati
What shall I do, where shall I go, and where, having gone, shall I find peace? How might my husband, the Sun, be kept from anger?
Verse 87 (skanda.7.11.87)
iti saṁciṁtya bahudhā prajāpatisutā tadā| bahu mene mahābhāgā pitṛsaṁśrayameva ca
Thus pondering in many ways, that greatly fortunate daughter of the Prajāpati resolved that taking refuge with her father would be best.
Verse 88 (skanda.7.11.88)
tataḥ pitṛgṛhaṁ gantuṁ kṛtabuddhiryaśasvinī| chāyāmayīmātmatanuṁ pratyaṁgamiva nirmitām
Then that glorious lady resolved to go to her father's house, and fashioned a shadow-form of her own body, made identical limb for limb.
Verse 89 (skanda.7.11.89)
sammukhaṁ prekṣya tāṁ devīṁ svāṁ chāyāṁ vākyamabravīt
Gazing at her own shadow-double before her, the goddess spoke these words.
Verse 90 (skanda.7.11.90)
saṁjñovāca| ahaṁ yāsyāmi bhadraṁ te svakaṁ ca bhavanaṁ pituḥ| nirvikāraṁ tvayā tvatra stheyaṁ macchāsanācchubhe
Saṁjñā said: Blessings upon you; I shall go to my own father's house. O auspicious one, by my command you must remain here unchanged.
Verse 91 (skanda.7.11.91)
imau ca bālakau mahyaṁ kanyā ca varavarṇinī| saṁbhāvyā naiva cākhyeyamidaṁ bhagavate tvayā
You must care for these two boys and my beautiful daughter, and you must never disclose this matter to the Lord.
Verse 92 (skanda.7.11.92)
Even if asked, you must not reveal this departure of mine. For this reason you shall be called by my very name, Saṁjñā, bearing its authority.
Verse 93 (skanda.7.11.93)
chāyovāca| ā keśagrahaṇāddevi ā śāpānnaiva karhicit| ākhyāsyāmi mataṁ tubhyaṁ gamyatāṁ yatra vāṁchitam
Chāyā said: O Goddess, even up to being seized by the hair or being cursed, I shall never tell. This is agreed by me; go wherever you wish.
Verse 94 (skanda.7.11.94)
īśvara uvāca| ityuktā sā tadā devī jagāma bhavanaṁ pituḥ| dadarśa tatra tvaṣṭāraṁ tapasā dhūtakalmaṣam
Īśvara said: Having said this, that goddess then went to her father's dwelling. There she beheld Tvaṣṭṛ, purified of all impurity through austerity.
Verse 95 (skanda.7.11.95)
bahumānācca tenāpi pūjitā viśvakarmaṇā| varṣāṇāṁ ca sahasraṁ tu vasamānā piturgṛhe| tasthau pitṛgṛhe sā tu kiṁcitkālamaniṁditā
Viśvakarman too honored her with great respect. That blameless goddess dwelt in her father's house for a thousand years, remaining there for some time.
Verse 96 (skanda.7.11.96)
tatastāṁ prāha cārvaṁgīṁ pitā nāticiroṣitām| stutvā tu tanayāṁ premṇā bahumānapuraḥsaram
Then, though she had not stayed overly long, her father addressed that lovely-limbed daughter, praising her with love and great respect.
Verse 97 (skanda.7.11.97)

viśvakarmovāca| tvāmeva paśyato vatse dināni subahūnyapi| muhūrtārddhasamāni syuḥ kiṁ tu dharmo vilupyate
Viśvakarman said: O child, while gazing upon you, even many days seem like half a moment; yet dharma comes to be violated.
Verse 98 (skanda.7.11.98)
bāṁdhaveṣu ciraṁ vāso nārīṇāṁ na yaśaskaraḥ| manorathā bāṁdhavānāṁ nāryā bhartṛgṛhe sthitiḥ
A long stay among relatives does not bring honor to women. It is the very wish of a woman's kinsfolk that she remain in her husband's house.
Verse 99 (skanda.7.11.99)
sā tvaṁ trailokyanāthena bhartrā sūryeṇa saṁyutā| piturgṛhe ciraṁ kālaṁ vastuṁ nārhasi putrike
You, joined to the Sun, lord of the three worlds, as your husband, O daughter, ought not to dwell so long in your father's house.
Verse 100 (skanda.7.11.100)
tattvaṁ bhartṛgṛhaṁ gaccha dṛṣṭo'haṁ pūjitāsi me| punarāgamanaṁ kāryaṁ darśanāya śucismite
Therefore go now to your husband's house; you have seen me and honored me. O pure-smiling one, come again for a visit.
Verse 101 (skanda.7.11.101)
īśvara uvāca| ityuktā sā tadā pitrā gacchagaccheti sā punaḥ| saṁpūjayitvā pitaraṁ vaḍavārūpadhāriṇī
Īśvara said: Thus told by her father, 'Go, go,' she, having honored her father, then took the form of a mare.
Verse 102 (skanda.7.11.102)
meroruttaratastatra varṣaṁ yaddhanuṣākṛti| uttarāḥ kuravo loke prakhyātā ye yaśasvini
North of Meru lies the bow-shaped region, O glorious one, renowned in the world as Uttara Kuru.
Verse 103 (skanda.7.11.103)
tatra tepe tapaḥ sādhvī nirāhārā'śvarūpiṇī| etasminnaṁtare devi tasyāśchāyā vivasvataḥ
There, that virtuous one, in the form of a mare, performed austerity without food. Meanwhile, O Goddess, her shadow-double remained with the Sun.
Verse 104 (skanda.7.11.104)
samīpasthā tadā devī saṁjñāyā vākyatatparā| tasyāṁ ca bhagavānsūryo dvitīyāyāṁ divaspatiḥ
That goddess remained close by, faithful to Saṁjñā's word. And with her, the second one, the blessed Sun, lord of the day—
Verse 105 (skanda.7.11.105)
saṁjñeyamiti manvāno rūpaudāryeṇa mohitaḥ| tasyāṁ ca janayāmāsa dvau putrau kanyakāṁ tathā
believing her to be Saṁjñā herself, and enchanted by her beauty and grace, begot in her two sons and a daughter.
Verse 106 (skanda.7.11.106)
pūrvaṁ yastu manostulyaḥ sāvarṇistena so'bhavat| yaḥ sūryātprathamaṁ jātaḥ putrayoḥ surasundari
He who resembled the earlier Manu became Sāvarṇi; O beautiful one among the gods, of the two sons he who was born first from the Sun—
Verse 107 (skanda.7.11.107)
dvitīyo yo'bhavaccānyaḥ sa graho'bhūcchanaiścaraḥ| kanyā'bhūttapatī yā tāṁ vavre saṁvaraṇo nṛpaḥ
The second one who was born became the planet Śanaiścara (Saturn). The daughter who was born was Tapatī, whom King Saṁvaraṇa took as his wife.
Verse 108 (skanda.7.11.108)
tāpīnāma nadī ceyaṁ viṁdhyamūlādviniḥsṛtā| nityaṁ puṇyajalā snāne paścimodadhigāminī
This is the river named Tāpī, issuing from the foot of the Vindhya, ever holy in its waters, excellent for bathing, flowing toward the western ocean.
Verse 109 (skanda.7.11.109)
anyā caiva tathā bhadrā jātā putrī mahāprabhā| saṁjñā tu pārthivī chāyā ātmajānāṁ yathākarot
Besides these, another daughter, Bhadrā, was born, of great splendor. As for how the earthly Saṁjñā (the shadow) treated her own children—
Verse 110 (skanda.7.11.110)
snehaṁ na pūrvajātānāṁ tathā kṛtavatī satī| lālanādyupabhogeṣu viśeṣamanuvāsaram
she did not show the same affection to the earlier-born children as she showed her own; day after day she maintained a difference in the matters of nurture and indulgence.
Verse 111 (skanda.7.11.111)
yathā sveṣvanuvarteta na tathānyeṣu bhāminī| manustu kṣāṁtavāṁstasyā bhaviṣyo yo hi pārvati
As she behaved toward her own, so she did not behave toward the others, O radiant one. But the future Manu, O Pārvatī, bore this with patience.
Verse 112 (skanda.7.11.112)
merau tiṣṭhati so'dyāpi tapaḥ kurvanvarānane| sarvaṁ tatkṣāṁtavānmāturyamastasyā na cakṣame
He still stands on Meru even today, performing austerity, O fair-faced one. He bore all his mother's ways patiently, but Yama did not forgive her.
Verse 113 (skanda.7.11.113)
bahuśo yācamānastu chāyayā'tīva kopitaḥ| sa vai kopācca bālyācca bhāvino'rthasya vai balāt
Though he pleaded repeatedly, he was made exceedingly angry by Chāyā. He, through anger, through childishness, and through the force of what was destined to come—
Verse 114 (skanda.7.11.114)
tāḍanāya tataḥ kopātpādastena samudyataḥ| tathā punaḥ kṣāṁtimatā na tu dehe nipātitaḥ
in anger raised his foot to strike her. Yet, being restrained, he did not actually bring it down upon her body.
Verse 115 (skanda.7.11.115)
padā saṁtarjayāmāsa chāyāṁ saṁjñāsuto yamaḥ
Yama, the son reckoned as Saṁjñā's, threatened Chāyā with his raised foot.
Verse 116 (skanda.7.11.116)
taṁ śaśāpa tataśchāyā kruddhā sā pārthivī bhṛśam| kiṁcitprasphuramāṇoṣṭhī vicalatpāṇipallavā
Then that earthly Chāyā, greatly enraged, cursed him, her lips trembling slightly, her tender hands quivering.
Verse 117 (skanda.7.11.117)
chāyovāca| pituḥ patnīmamaryāda yanmāṁ tarjayase padā| bhuvi tasmādayaṁ pādastavādyaiva patiṣyati
Chāyā said: O disrespectful one, since you threaten your father's wife with your foot, therefore this very foot of yours shall fall to the ground this very day.
Verse 118 (skanda.7.11.118)
īśvara uvāca| yamastu tena śāpena bhṛśaṁ pīḍitamānasaḥ| manunā saha dharmātmā pitre sarvaṁ nyavedayat
Īśvara said: Yama, his mind greatly afflicted by that curse, righteous as he was, together with Manu, reported everything to his father.
Verse 119 (skanda.7.11.119)
yama uvāca| tātaitanmahadāścaryaṁ na dṛṣṭamiha kenacit| mātā vātsalyamutsṛjya śāpaṁ putre prayacchati
Yama said: O father, this is a great wonder, never before seen by anyone — a mother abandoning her affection and bestowing a curse upon her son.
Verse 120 (skanda.7.11.120)
snehena tulyamasmāsu mātādya naiva vartate| visṛjya jyāyaso yasmātkanīyaḥsu bubhūṣati
Today our mother's love is no longer equal among us; for, abandoning the elder ones, she wishes to favor the younger.
Verse 121 (skanda.7.11.121)
tasyā mayodyataḥ pādo na tu dehe nipātitaḥ| bālyādvā yadi vā mohāttadbhavānkṣaṁtumarhati
I raised my foot against her, but did not bring it down upon her body. Whether from childishness or from delusion, may you please forgive this.
Verse 122 (skanda.7.11.122)
śapto'haṁ tāta kopena tayā suta iti sphuṭam| ato na mahyaṁ jananī sā bhavedvadatāṁ vara
O father, she cursed me in anger, clearly, even though I am her son. Therefore, O best of speakers, she cannot truly be my mother.
Verse 123 (skanda.7.11.123)
nirguṇeṣvapi putreṣu na mātā nirguṇā bhavet| pādaste patatāṁ putra kathametattayoditam
Even toward faultless sons a mother is never without virtue. How could she have said, 'O son, may your foot fall off'?
Verse 124 (skanda.7.11.124)
tava prasādāccaraṇo na patedbhagavanyathā| mātṛśāpādayaṁ me'dya tathā ciṁtaya gopate
By your grace, O lord, let this foot not fall off. Consider, O protector, some remedy for this that afflicts me today because of my mother's curse.
Verse 125 (skanda.7.11.125)
raviruvāca| asaṁśayaṁ mahatputra bhaviṣyatyatra kāraṇam| yena te hyāviśatkrodho dharmajñasya mahātmanaḥ
Ravi said: Without doubt, O son, there must be some great cause at work here, by which anger entered even you, righteous and great-souled as you are.
Verse 126 (skanda.7.11.126)
sarveṣāmeva śāpānāṁ pratighāto'pi vidyate| na tu mātrābhiśaptānāṁ kvaciccchāpanivarttanam
For all curses there exists some counter-remedy; but for a curse given by a mother, there is nowhere any reversal.
Verse 127 (skanda.7.11.127)
na yuktametanmithyā tu kartuṁ māturvacastava| kiṁcitte saṁvidhāsyāmi putrasnehādanugraham
It is therefore not proper to render your mother's word false. Yet, out of a father's love, I shall arrange some measure of grace for you.
Verse 128 (skanda.7.11.128)
kṛmayo māṁsamādāya prayāsyaṁti mahītalam| kṛtaṁ tasyā vacaḥ satyaṁ tvaṁ ca trāto bhaviṣyasi
Worms shall take away a portion of flesh and fall to the ground; thus her word shall be made true, and you shall be saved.
Verse 129 (skanda.7.11.129)
īśvara uvāca| ādityastvabravīcchāyāṁ kimarthaṁ tanayeṣu vai| tulyeṣvapyadhikaḥ sneha ekatra kriyate tvayā
Īśvara said: Then Āditya said to Chāyā: Why, among sons who are equal, do you show greater affection to one alone?
Verse 130 (skanda.7.11.130)
nūnaṁ na caiṣāṁ jananī tvaṁ saṁjñā kvāpi sā gatā| vikaleṣvapyapatyeṣu na mātā śāpadā bhavet
Surely you are not their true mother; Saṁjñā has gone elsewhere. Even toward flawed children, a mother does not become a giver of curses.
Verse 131 (skanda.7.11.131)
api doṣasahasrāṇi yadi putraḥ samācaret| prāṇadrohe'pi nirato na mātā pāpamācaret| tasmātsatyaṁ mama brūhi mā śāpavaśagā bhava
Even if a son commits a thousand faults, even engaged in harming her very life, a mother does not commit sin against him. Therefore tell me the truth; do not fall under the sway of the curse.
Verse 132 (skanda.7.11.132)
īśvara uvāca| taṁ śaptumudyataṁ dṛṣṭvā chāyāsaṁjñā dinādhipam| bhayena kaṁpatī devī yathāvṛttaṁ mahāsatī
Īśvara said: Seeing the lord of the day poised to curse her, Chāyā-Saṁjñā, that greatly virtuous goddess, began to tremble in fear.
Verse 133 (skanda.7.11.133)
sā cāha tanayā tvaṣṭurahaṁ saṁjñā vibhāvaso| patnī tava tvayā patyā patiyuktā divākara
She said: O Vibhāvasu, I am Saṁjñā, daughter of Tvaṣṭṛ, your wife, O Divākara; joined to you, my own husband.
Verse 134 (skanda.7.11.134)
itthaṁ vivasvataḥ sā tu bahuśaḥ pṛcchato'nyathā| na vācā bhāṣate kruddhaḥ śāpaṁ dātuṁ samudyataḥ
Thus, though Vivasvat questioned her repeatedly, otherwise minded, he, angered, spoke not a word, and grew ready to pronounce a curse.
Verse 135 (skanda.7.11.135)
śāpodyatakaraṁ dṛṣṭvā sūryaṁ chāyā vivasvataḥ| kathayāmāsa tatsarvaṁ saṁjñāyāḥ suviceṣṭitam
Seeing the Sun, hand raised to curse her, Vivasvat's shadow-wife then told him all of Saṁjñā's doings.
Verse 136 (skanda.7.11.136)
tacchrutvā bhagavānsūryo jagāma tvaṣṭurālayam| tataḥ saṁpūjayāmāsa tadā trailokyapūjitam
Hearing this, the blessed Sun went to Tvaṣṭṛ's dwelling. Then Tvaṣṭṛ worshipped him who is worshipped throughout the three worlds.
Verse 137 (skanda.7.11.137)
nirdagdhukāmaṁ roṣeṇa sāntvayāmāsa pārvati| bhāsvaṁtaṁ nijayā dīptyā nijagehamupāgatam| kva saṁjñeti ca pṛcchaṁtaṁ kathayāmāsa viśvakṛt
O Pārvatī, Viśvakarman placated the Sun, who, blazing with his own radiance, had come to his house wishing to burn everything in anger. When he asked, 'Where is Saṁjñā?', the Maker-of-All told him.
Verse 138 (skanda.7.11.138)
viśvakarmmovāca| āgataiva hi me veśma bhavatā śrūyatāṁ vacaḥ| vikhyātaṁ tejasā'ḍhyaṁ ta idaṁ rūpaṁ suduḥsaham
Viśvakarman said: She indeed came to my house; hear my words. This form of yours, renowned and rich with radiance, is exceedingly difficult to endure.
Verse 139 (skanda.7.11.139)
asahantī tataḥ saṁjñā vane carati vai tapaḥ| drakṣyase tāṁ bhavānadya svabhāryāṁ śubhacāriṇīm
Unable to bear it, Saṁjñā has gone to the forest to perform austerity. You shall see today that virtuous-conducted wife of yours.
Verse 140 (skanda.7.11.140)
rūpārthaṁ carate'raṇyaṁ carantī sumahattapaḥ| mataṁ me brahmaṇo vākyādyadi te deva rocate| rūpaṁ nirvarttayāmyadya tava kāṁtaṁ divaspate
Because of this very form of yours, she wanders in the forest performing great austerity. It is my counsel, from Brahmā's own word, if it pleases you, O god: today, O lord of the day, let me render your form gentle and lovely.
Verse 141 (skanda.7.11.141)
īśvara uvāca| yato hi bhāsvato rūpaṁ prāgāsītparimaṁḍalam| tatastatheti taṁ prāha tvaṣṭāraṁ bhagavānraviḥ
Īśvara said: Since the Sun's form had previously been a globe, the blessed Ravi said to Tvaṣṭṛ, 'So be it.'
Verse 142 (skanda.7.11.142)
viśvakarmātvanujñātaḥ śākadvīpe vivasvatā| bhūmimāropya tattejaḥ śātanāyopacakrame
Viśvakarman, granted permission by Vivasvat, in Śākadvīpa set that radiance upon the earth and began the work of paring it down.
Verse 143 (skanda.7.11.143)
bhramatā'śeṣajagatāmadhibhūtena bhāsvatā| samudrā draviṇopetāścukṣubhuśca samantataḥ
As that Sun, sovereign over all the worlds, spun and whirled, the treasure-laden oceans became agitated on every side.
Verse 144 (skanda.7.11.144)
bhramatā khalu deveśi sacaṁdragrahatārakam| adhogati mahābhāge babhūvākṣiptamākulam
By his spinning, O sovereign Goddess, all things — moon, planets, and stars alike — O most fortunate one, were thrown downward, thrown into confusion and turmoil.
Verse 145 (skanda.7.11.145)
vikṣiptasalilāḥ sarve babhūvuśca tathā nadāḥ| vyabhidyaṁta tathā śailāḥ śīrṇasānunibaṁdhanāḥ
All the rivers too had their waters scattered every which way. The mountains likewise were rent apart, their ridges crumbling and their bonds broken.
Verse 146 (skanda.7.11.146)
dhruvādhārāṇyaśeṣāṇi dhiṣṇyāni varavarṇini| bhrāmyadraśminibaddhāni adho jagmuḥ sahasraśaḥ
O fair-colored one, all the star-clusters resting upon the pole, bound by his whirling rays, fell downward by the thousands.
Verse 147 (skanda.7.11.147)
vyaśīryaṁta mahāmeghā ghorārāvavirāviṇaḥ| bhāsvadbhramaṇavibhrāṁtabhūmyākāśamahītalam
The great thunderclouds, roaring with terrible sound, shattered apart. Earth, sky, and ground all reeled in confusion from the Sun's spinning.
Verse 148 (skanda.7.11.148)
jagadākulamatyarthaṁ tadā'sīdvaravarṇini| trailokye sakale devi bhramamāṇe maharṣaryaḥ| devāśca brahmaṇā sārddhaṁ bhāsvaṁtamabhituṣṭuvuḥ
O fair-colored one, the whole world then became exceedingly disturbed. O Goddess, as the entire triple world reeled, the great sages and the gods, together with Brahmā, praised the shining Sun.
Verse 149 (skanda.7.11.149)
devā ūcuḥ| ādidevo'si devānāṁ jātametatsvayaṁ tava| sargasthityaṁtakāleṣu tridhā bhedena tiṣṭhasi
The gods said: You are the primal god of the gods; this entire creation has itself sprung from you. In the times of creation, preservation, and dissolution, you abide in threefold differentiation.
Verse 150 (skanda.7.11.150)
svasti te'stu jagannātha gharmavarṣahimākara| iṁdra āgamya taṁ devaṁ likhyamānamathāstavīt| jaya deva jagatsvāmiñjaya deva jagatpate
Hail to you, O Lord of the universe, maker of heat, rain, and frost. Indra, coming near, praised that god as he was being pared down: Victory, O god, O lord of the world; victory, O god, O master of the world.
Verse 151 (skanda.7.11.151)
ṛṣayaśca tataḥ sapta vasiṣṭhātripurogamāḥ| tuṣṭuvurvividhaiḥ stotraiḥ svasti svastīti vādinaḥ| vedoktibhirathāgryābhirvālakhilyāśca tuṣṭuvuḥ
Then the seven sages, led by Vasiṣṭha and Atri, praised him with various hymns, chanting 'Hail, hail.' The Vālakhilya sages too praised him with the finest Vedic utterances.
Verse 152 (skanda.7.11.152)
vālakhilyā ūcuḥ| namasta ṛksvarūpāya sāmarūpāya te namaḥ| yajuḥsvarūparūpāya sāmnāṁ dhāmaga te namaḥ
The Vālakhilyas said: Salutation to you whose form is the Ṛk; salutation to you whose form is the Sāman. Salutation to you whose form is the Yajus, who moves within the abode of the Sāmans.
Verse 153 (skanda.7.11.153)
jñānaikarūpadehāya nirdhūtatamase namaḥ| śuddhajyotiḥsvarūpāya trimūrtāyāmalātmane
Salutation to you whose body is the single form of knowledge, free of all darkness. Salutation to you of pure light, of threefold form, of stainless essence.
Verse 154 (skanda.7.11.154)
variṣṭhāya vareṇyāya sarvasmai paramātmane| namo'khilajagadvyāpirūpāyānaṁtamūrttaye
Salutation to the most excellent, the most worthy of choice, the supreme self who is all. Salutation to you whose form pervades the entire universe, of endless form.
Verse 155 (skanda.7.11.155)
sarvakāraṇabhūtāya niṣṭhāya jñāna cetasām| namaḥ sūryasvarūpāya prakāśālakṣyarūpiṇe
Salutation to you who are the source of all causes, the resting-place of those with minds of knowledge, whose form is the Sun, whose luminous form is beyond perception.
Verse 156 (skanda.7.11.156)
bhāskarāya namastubhyaṁ tathā dinakṛte namaḥ| sarvasmai hetave caiva saṁdhyājyotsnākṛte namaḥ
Salutation to you, O Bhāskara; salutation to the maker of the day. Salutation to the cause of all things, the maker of twilight's glow.
Verse 157 (skanda.7.11.157)
tvaṁ sarvametadbhagavañjagacca bhramatā tvayā| bhramatyāviśvamakhilaṁ brahmāṁḍaṁ sacarācaram| tvadaṁśubhiridaṁ sarvaṁ spṛṣṭaṁ vai jāyate śuci
O Lord, you are this entire world; by your movement this whole universe, this cosmic egg with its moving and unmoving beings, revolves. Touched by your rays, all of this becomes pure.
Verse 158 (skanda.7.11.158)
kriyate tvatkarasparśairjalādīnāṁ pavitratā
By the touch of your rays alone is the purity of water and the rest brought about.
Verse 159 (skanda.7.11.159)
homadānādiko dharmo nopakārāya jāyate| tāta yāvanna saṁyogi jagadetattvadaṁśubhiḥ
O father, until this world is joined with your rays, the practice of fire-oblation, charity, and the like does not become fruitful for anyone's benefit.
Verse 160 (skanda.7.11.160)
ṛcaste sakalā hyetāstathā yāni yajūṁṣi ca| sakalāni ca sāmāni nipataṁti tvadaṁgataḥ
All these hymns of the Ṛk, and all the Yajus verses, and all the Sāmans, fall forth from your very limbs.
Verse 161 (skanda.7.11.161)
ṛṅmayastvaṁ jagannātha tvameva ca yajurmayaḥ| yataḥ sāmamayaścaiva tato nātha trayīmayaḥ
O Lord of the universe, you are made of the Ṛk, and you alone are made of the Yajus; since you are made of the Sāman as well, therefore, O Lord, you are made of the threefold Veda.
Verse 162 (skanda.7.11.162)
tvameva brahmaṇo rūpaṁ paraṁ cāparameva ca| mūrttāmūrttaṁ tathā sūkṣmaṁ sthūlaṁ rūpeṇa saṁsthitaḥ
You alone are the form of Brahman, both the higher and the lower. You abide in form as manifest and unmanifest, as subtle and gross.
Verse 163 (skanda.7.11.163)
nimeṣakāṣṭhādimayaḥ kālarūpakṣaṇātmakaḥ| prasīda svecchayā rūpaṁ svaṁ tejaḥ śamanaṁ kuru| tvaṁ deva jagatāṁ hetordukhaṁ sahasi duḥsaham
You are made of the measures of time — the instant, the moment, and the rest — you are time itself in the form of instants. Be gracious, and of your own will, calm your radiance. O god, for the sake of the worlds you endure unendurable suffering.
Verse 164 (skanda.7.11.164)
tvaṁ nātha mokṣiṇāṁ mokṣo dhyeyastvaṁ dhyāyatāṁ varaḥ| tvaṁ gatiḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ karmakāṁḍanivartinām
O Lord, you are liberation for those seeking liberation; you are the supreme object of meditation for those who meditate. You are the goal of all beings who turn away from ritual action.
Verse 165 (skanda.7.11.165)
śaṁ prajābhyo'stu deveśa śanno'stu jagatāṁpate
O Lord of gods, may there be well-being for all creatures; O master of the world, may there be well-being for us.
Verse 166 (skanda.7.11.166)
tvaṁ dhātā visṛjasi viśvameka eva tvaṁ pātā sthitikaraṇāya saṁpravṛttaḥ| tvayyaṁte layamakhilaṁ prayāti caitattvattonyo na hi tapanāsti sarvadātā
You are the creator, you alone bring forth this universe; you are the preserver, engaged in its maintenance. In you at the end all this attains dissolution; O Sun, there is no other giver of all things besides you.
