The Curse of Durvasa upon Samba (Beginning of the Glory of Sambaditya)

Chapter 99All chaptersChapter 101

Verse 1 (skanda.7.100.1)

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi tayoruttarasaṁsthitam| tathā vāyavyadigbhāge brahmaṇo bālarūpiṇaḥ

Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to what stands north of these two, and in the northwest direction, in the child-form of Brahma —

Verse 2 (skanda.7.100.2)

sāṁbādityaṁ suraśreṣṭhe yaḥ sāṁbena pratiṣṭhitaḥ| sthānāni trīṇi devasya dvīpe'sminbhāskarasya tu

— to Sambaditya, O foremost of gods, established by Samba; the deity Bhaskara has three abodes in this island.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.100.3)

pūrvaṁ mitravanaṁ nāma tathā muṇḍīramucyate| prabhāsakṣetramāsthāya sāṁbādityastṛtīyakaḥ

The first is named Mitravana, and the second is called Mundira; Sambaditya, established in the field of Prabhasa, is the third.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.100.4)

tasminkṣetre mahādevi puraṁ yatsāṁbasaṁjñakam| dvitīyaṁ śāśvataṁ sthānaṁ tatra sūryasya nityaśaḥ

In that field, O great Goddess, the city known by the name Samba is the second eternal abode of the Sun, there, forever.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.100.5)

prītyā sāṁbasya tatrārko janasyānugrahāya ca| tatra dvādaśabhāgena mitro maitreṇa cakṣuṣā

Out of affection for Samba, the Sun abides there, for the grace of the people; there, in his twelfth portion, as Mitra, with his friendly gaze —

Verse 6 (skanda.7.100.6)

avalokayañjagatsarvaṁ śreyorthaṁ tiṣṭhate sadā| prayuktāṁ vidhivatpūjāṁ gṛhṇāti bhagavānsvayam

— beholding the entire world, he ever abides there for its welfare; the Lord himself accepts the worship duly performed there.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.100.7)

devyuvāca| ko'yaṁ sāṁbaḥ sutaḥ kasya yasya nāmnā raveḥ puram| yasya vā'yaṁ sahasrāṁśurvaradaḥ puṇyakarmaṇaḥ

The Goddess said: Who is this Samba, whose son is he, by whose name is this city of the Sun? Or whose is this thousand-rayed one, bestower of boons upon those of virtuous deeds?

Verse 8 (skanda.7.100.8)

īśvara uvāca| ya ete dvādaśādityā virājante mahābalāḥ| teṣāṁ yo viṣṇusaṁjñastu sarvalokeṣu viśrutaḥ

Ishvara said: Of these twelve Adityas who shine forth, mighty in strength, he among them who bears the name Vishnu, renowned in all the worlds —

Verse 9 (skanda.7.100.9)

ihāsau vāsudevatvamavāpa bhagavānvibhuḥ

— that all-pervading Lord attained here the state of Vasudeva.

Verse 10 (skanda.7.100.10)

tasya sāṁbaḥ suto jajñe jāṁbavatyāṁ mahābalaḥ| sa tu pitrā bhṛśaṁ śaptaḥ kuṣṭharogamavāptavān| tena saṁsthāpitaḥ sūryo nijanāmnā puraṁ kṛtam

To him a son of great strength named Samba was born to Jambavati; he, however, was severely cursed by his father and contracted the disease of leprosy; by him the Sun was established, and a city was made in his own name.

Verse 11 (skanda.7.100.11)

devyuvāca| śaptaḥ kasminnimitte'sau pitrā putraḥ svayaṁ punaḥ| nālpaṁ syātkāraṇaṁ deva yenāsau śaptavānsutam

The Goddess said: On what occasion was he, a son, again cursed by his own father? The cause cannot have been trivial, O Lord, by which he cursed his own son.

Verse 12 (skanda.7.100.12)

īśvara uvāca| śṛṇuṣvāvahitā bhūtvā tasya yacchāpakāraṇam| durvāsānāma bhagavānmamaivāṁśasamudbhavaḥ

Ishvara said: Listen attentively to the cause of his curse. There was a lord named Durvasa, born of a portion of myself.

Verse 13 (skanda.7.100.13)

aṭamānaḥ sa bhagavāṁstrīllokānpracacāra ha| atha prāpto dvāravatīṁ lokāḥ saṁjajñire puraḥ

That lord, wandering about, traversed the three worlds; then, arriving at Dvaravati, the people gathered before him.

Verse 14 (skanda.7.100.14)

tamāgatamṛṣiṁ dṛṣṭvā sāṁbo rūpeṇa garvitaḥ| piṁgākṣaṁ jaṭilaṁ rūkṣaṁ visvarūpaṁ kṛśaṁ tathā

Beholding that sage who had arrived — tawny-eyed, matted-haired, rough, misshapen, and emaciated — Samba, proud of his own beauty,

Verse 15 (skanda.7.100.15)

avamānaṁ cakārāsau darśanātsparśanāttathā| dṛṣṭvā tasya mukhaṁ mando vaktraṁ cakre tathātmanaḥ| cakre yadukulaśreṣṭho garvito yauvanena tu

— insulted him, both in his manner of looking and of touching; that foolish one, having seen his face, twisted his own face in mockery likewise; the foremost of the Yadu clan did this, made proud by his youth.

Verse 16 (skanda.7.100.16)

atha kruddho mahātejā durvāsā ṛṣisattamaḥ| sāṁbaṁ provāca bhagavānvidhunvanmukhamātmanaḥ

Then Durvasa, the greatly radiant, foremost of sages, enraged, shaking his own face, the Lord spoke to Samba.

Verse 17 (skanda.7.100.17)

yasmādvirūpaṁ māṁ dṛṣṭvā ātmarūpeṇa garvitaḥ| gamane darśane mahyamahaṁkāraḥ kṛto yataḥ| tasmāttvaṁ kuṣṭharogeṇa na cireṇa grasiṣyase

'Since, having seen my misshapen form, proud of your own beauty, you have shown arrogance toward me both in your bearing and your gaze — therefore, before long, you shall be consumed by the disease of leprosy.'
