Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 121
The Glory of Jamadagnyeshvara (Rameshvara)
Verse 1 (skanda.7.121.1)
īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi rāmeśvaramanuttamam| jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa svayaṁ tatra pratiṣṭhitam
Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the incomparable Rameshvara, where Rama, son of Jamadagni, himself established the linga.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.121.2)
gopīśvarācca vāyavye dhanuṣāṁ triṁśake'ntare| sthitaṁ mahāprabhāvaṁ hi liṁgaṁ pātakanāśanam
To the northwest of Gopishvara, thirty bow-lengths away, stands that linga of great power, the destroyer of sin.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.121.3)
yadā rāmeṇa deveśi jamadagnisutena vai| kṛto mātṛvadho ghoraḥ piturājñānuvartinā
O Goddess of gods, when Rama, son of Jamadagni, obeying his father's command, committed that terrible act of slaying his mother —
Verse 4 (skanda.7.121.4)
tadā manasi saṁtāpaṁ kṛtvā nirvedamāgataḥ| tataḥ prasannatāṁ yāto jamadagnirmahātapāḥ
then grief arose in his heart and he came to renunciation; thereafter the great ascetic Jamadagni became pleased with him.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.121.5)
dadau varaṁ tatastuṣṭo reṇukāyāśca jīvitam| evaṁ yadyapi sā tatra jīvitā varavarṇinī
Being pleased, he granted him a boon and restored Renuka to life; thus, although that fair mother was revived there,
Verse 6 (skanda.7.121.6)
tathāpi saghṛṇo devi jāmadagnyo mahāprabhaḥ| prabhāsaṁ kṣetramāsādya tapaścakre tato'dbhutam
still, O Goddess, the greatly radiant son of Jamadagni, filled with remorse, came to the field of Prabhasa and performed there a wondrous penance.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.121.7)
pratiṣṭhāpya mahādevaṁ śaṁkaraṁ lokaśaṁkaram| divyaṁ varṣaśataṁ sāgraṁ tatastuṣṭo maheśvaraḥ
Having installed the great god Shankara, benefactor of all worlds, and performed austerities for a hundred divine years and more, he pleased Maheshvara.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.121.8)
dadau tasyepsitaṁ sarvaṁ svayaṁ tatraiva saṁsthitaḥ| tataḥ kṛtārthatāṁ prāpto jāmadagnyo mahāṛṣiḥ
Maheshvara himself, abiding there, granted him all that he desired; then the great sage, son of Jamadagni, became fulfilled.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.121.9)
triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivīṁ jitvā hatvā ca kṣatriyān| kṛtvā paṁcanadaṁ tatra kurukṣetre mahāmanāḥ
The great-souled one, having conquered the earth twenty-one times and slain the Kshatriyas, created the five blood-lakes at Kurukshetra,
Verse 10 (skanda.7.121.10)
raktaiḥ saṁpūrṇatāṁ nītvā kṣatriyāṇāṁ varānane| ānṛṇyaṁ samanuprāptaḥ pitṝṇāṁ yo mahābalaḥ
O fair-faced one, filling them with the blood of the Kshatriyas, the mighty one thereby discharged his debt to his ancestors.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.121.11)
evaṁ kṣattrāntakaṁ kṛtvā dattvā vipreṣu medinīm| kṛtārthatāmanuprāptastrailokye khyātapauruṣaḥ
Thus having ended the Kshatriyas and given the earth away to the brahmins, he whose valor is renowned in the three worlds attained fulfillment.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.121.12)
tena tatsthāpitaṁ liṁgaṁ kṣetre prābhāsike śubhe| yastaṁ pūjayate bhaktyā pāpayukto'pi mānavaḥ| sa muktaḥ pātakaiḥ sarvairyāti lokamumāpateḥ
It was he who established this linga in the auspicious Prabhasa field; whatever man, even sin-laden, worships it with devotion, is freed from all sins and goes to the world of the Lord of Uma.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.121.13)
jyeṣṭhakṛṣṇacaturdaśyāṁ jāgṛyāttatra yo naraḥ| so'śvamedhaphalaṁ prāpya modate divi devavat
Whatever man keeps vigil there on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight of Jyeshtha obtains the fruit of the Ashvamedha sacrifice and rejoices in heaven like a god.
