Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 128
The Glory of Sagaraditya
Verse 1 (skanda.7.128.1)
īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi sāgarādityamuttamam| bhairaveśātpaścimato rudrānmṛtyuñjayāttathā
Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the excellent Sagaraditya, situated to the west of Bhairavesha and likewise from Mrityunjaya Rudra.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.128.2)
kāmeśāddakṣiṇāgneye nātidūre vyavasthitam| sarvarogapraśamanaṁ dāridryaughavighātakam| pratiṣṭhitaṁ mahādevi sagareṇa mahātmanā
Situated not far to the south-southeast of Kamesha, curing every disease and destroying the flood of poverty — that god, O great Goddess, was established by the great-souled King Sagara.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.128.3)
ṣaṣṭiputrasahasrāṇi yaḥ prāpārātisūdanaḥ| sūryaṁ tatra samārādhya sagaraḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ
That slayer of foes, King Sagara, who obtained sixty thousand sons, worshipped the Sun there and became lord of the earth.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.128.4)
ya eṣa sāgaro devi yojanāyatavistaraḥ| āyato'śītisāhasraṁ yojanānāṁ prakīrtitaḥ
O Goddess, this ocean, extending over so many yojanas, is proclaimed to stretch eighty thousand yojanas in length.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.128.5)
asminmanvantare kṣiptaḥ sāgaraiśca caturdiśam| tasyedaṁ kīrtitaṁ devi nāma sāgarasaṁjñitam
In this Manvantara it was dug out in all four directions by the sons of Sagara; hence, O Goddess, its name "Sagara" is proclaimed.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.128.6)
yasyādyāpīha gāyanti purāṇe prathitaṁ yaśaḥ| tenāyaṁ sthāpito devo bhāskaro vāritaskaraḥ
He whose fame is still sung today, spread abroad in the Purana — by him this god Bhaskara, who holds back the waters, was established.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.128.7)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā na jaḍo nāndho na daridro na duḥkhitaḥ| na caiveṣṭaviyogī syānna rogī naiva pāpakṛt
Beholding him, one becomes neither dull-witted, nor blind, nor poor, nor sorrowful; nor is he separated from those he loves, nor afflicted by disease, nor a doer of sinful deeds.
Verse 8 (skanda.7.128.8)
māghe māsi mahādevi site pakṣe jitendriyaḥ| ṣaṣṭhyāmupoṣito bhūtvā rātrau tasyāgrataḥ svapet
O great Goddess, in the month of Magha, in the bright fortnight, on the sixth day, having fasted and mastered his senses, one should sleep that night before him.
Verse 9 (skanda.7.128.9)
vibuddhastvatha saptamyāṁ bhaktyā bhānuṁ samarcayet| brāhmaṇānbhojayedbhaktyā vittaśāṭhyaṁ vivarjayet
Then, waking on the seventh, one should worship the Sun with devotion, feed brahmins devotedly, and forsake miserliness with wealth.
Verse 10 (skanda.7.128.10)
sutaptenehatapasā yajñairvā bahudakṣiṇaiḥ| tāṁ gatiṁ na narā yānti yāṁ gatāḥ sūryamāśritāḥ
Men do not attain, even through severe austerity in this world or through sacrifices with abundant gifts, that state which those who take refuge in the Sun attain.
Verse 11 (skanda.7.128.11)
bhaktyā tu puruṣaiḥ pūjā kṛtā dūrvāṁkurairapi| bhānurdadāti hi phalaṁ sarvayajñaiḥ sudurlabham
Even worship performed by men with devotion using mere blades of durva grass — for that, the Sun bestows a fruit most difficult to obtain even through all manner of sacrifices.
Verse 12 (skanda.7.128.12)
tasmātsarvaprayatnena sūryamevābhipūjayet| janakādayo yathā siddhiṁ gatā bhānuṁ prapūjya ca
Therefore one should worship the Sun with every effort, just as Janaka and other kings, having worshipped the Sun, attained accomplishment.
Verse 13 (skanda.7.128.13)
sarvātmā sarvalokeśo devadevaḥ prajāpatiḥ| sūrya eva trilokasya mūlaṁ paramadaivatam
He is the soul of all, lord of all worlds, god of gods, lord of creatures; the Sun alone is the root of the three worlds and the supreme deity.
Verse 14 (skanda.7.128.14)
vasante kapilaḥ sūryo grīṣme kāñcanasaprabhaḥ| śvetavarṇaśca varṣāsu pāṇḍuḥ śaradi bhāskaraḥ
In spring the Sun is tawny-hued; in summer he shines golden; in the rains he is white; in autumn Bhaskara is pale-yellow.
Verse 15 (skanda.7.128.15)
hemante tāmravarṇastu śiśire lohito raviḥ| evaṁ varṇaviśeṣeṇa dhyāyetsūryaṁ yathākramam
In early winter he is copper-colored, and in the cold season the Sun is red; thus one should meditate on the Sun according to these particular colors, in due order.
Verse 16 (skanda.7.128.16)
pūjayitvā vidhānena yatātmā saṁyatendriyaḥ| paṭhennāmasahasraṁ tu sarvapātakanāśanam
Having worshipped him duly, one of disciplined mind and controlled senses should recite the thousand names, which destroys every sin.
Verse 17 (skanda.7.128.17)
devyuvāca| nāmnāṁ sahasraṁ me brūhi prasādāñchaṁkara prabho| tulyaṁ nāmasahasrasya kimapyanyatprakīrtaya
The Goddess said: O lord Shankara, in your grace tell me that thousand names — or, if there is anything else equal in merit to the thousand names, declare that too.
Verse 18 (skanda.7.128.18)
īśvara uvāca| alaṁ nāmasahasreṇa paṭhasvaivaṁ śubhaṁ stavam| yāni guhyāni nāmāni pavitrāṇi śubhāni ca| tāni te kīrtayiṣyāmi prayatnādavadhāraya
Ishvara said: Enough of the thousand names — recite instead this auspicious hymn. I shall now proclaim to you those names that are secret, pure, and auspicious; attend to them with care.
Verse 19 (skanda.7.128.19)
vikartano vivasvāṁśca mārtaṇḍo bhāskaro raviḥ| lokaprakāśakaḥ śrīmāṁllokacakṣurgraheśvaraḥ
Vikartana, Vivasvan, Martanda, Bhaskara, Ravi, illuminator of the worlds, the glorious one, the eye of the worlds, lord of the planets —
Verse 20 (skanda.7.128.20)
lokasākṣī trilokeśaḥ karttā harttā tamisrahā| tapanastāpanaścaiva śuciḥ saptāśvavāhanaḥ
witness of the worlds, lord of the three worlds, creator, destroyer, dispeller of darkness, the scorcher, the heater, the pure one, borne by seven horses —
Verse 21 (skanda.7.128.21)
gabhastihasto brahmā ca sarvadevanamaskṛtaḥ| ekaviṁśatirityeṣa stava iṣṭo mahātmanaḥ
he whose rays are as hands, who is Brahma himself, honored by all the gods — thus, in twenty-one names, is this hymn, dear to that great god.
Verse 22 (skanda.7.128.22)
śarīrārogyadaścaiva dhanavṛddhiyaśaskaraḥ| stavarāja iti khyātastriṣu lokeṣu viśrutaḥ
It grants bodily health, increases wealth, and confers fame; it is renowned throughout the three worlds as the "king of hymns."
Verse 23 (skanda.7.128.23)
yaścānena mahādevi dve saṁdhye'stamanodaye| stautyarkaṁ prayato bhūtvā sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate| sarvakāmasamṛddhātmā sūryalokaṁ sa gacchati
O great Goddess, whoever, purified, praises the Sun with this hymn at the two twilights, sunset and sunrise, is freed from all sins and, rich in the fulfillment of every desire, goes to the world of the Sun.
Verse 24 (skanda.7.128.24)
ityevaṁ kathitaṁ devi māhātmyaṁ sāgarārkajam| śrutaṁ duḥkhaughaśamanaṁ mahāpātakanāśanam
Thus, O Goddess, has been told this glory of Sagaraditya — which, merely by being heard, calms the flood of sorrows and destroys the greatest of sins.
