Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 129
The Glory of Ugraseneshvara (Akshamaleshvara)
Verse 1 (skanda.7.129.1)
īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi akṣamāleśvaraṁ param| sāgarārkādīśakoṇe paṁcāśaddhanuṣāntare
Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the supreme Akshamaleshvara, situated fifty bow-lengths to the northeast of Sagaraditya.
Verse 2 (skanda.7.129.2)
saṁsthitaṁ pāpaśamanaṁ yugaliṁgaṁ mahāprabham| akṣamāleśvaraṁ nāma purā tasya prakīrtitam| ugraseneśvaraṁ nāma khyātaṁ tasyaiva sāmpratam
There stands that sin-quelling twin linga of great power; in ancient times it was proclaimed by the name Akshamaleshvara, and now, at present, that very same linga is known by the name Ugraseneshvara.
Verse 3 (skanda.7.129.3)
devyuvāca| akṣamāleśvaraṁ nāma yatpūrvaṁ samudāhṛtam| kathaṁ tadabhavaddeva kathayasva prasādataḥ
The Goddess said: O god, tell me in your grace how it came to be called by the name Akshamaleshvara, as was declared before.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.129.4)
īśvara uvāca| āsītpurā mahādevi satī cādhamayonijā| akṣamāleti vai nāmnā satīdharmaparāyaṇā
Ishvara said: O great Goddess, long ago there lived a virtuous woman, born of a lowly womb, known by the name Akshamala, ever devoted to the duties of chastity.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.129.5)
kadācitsamanuprāpte durbhikṣe kālaparyayāt| ṛṣayaśca mahādevi kṣudhākrāntā vicetasaḥ
At a certain time, through the turning of the age, a terrible famine came upon the land, and, O great Goddess, the sages, overcome with hunger, were driven nearly out of their senses.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.129.6)
sarve cānnaṁ parīpsanto gatāścaṇḍālaveśmani| jñātvānnasaṁgrahaṁ tasya prārthayāñcakrurantyajam
All of them, desiring food, went to the dwelling of an outcaste; learning that he had a store of grain, they beseeched that low-born man.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.129.7)
bhobho'ntyaja mahābuddhe rakṣāsmānannadānataḥ| prāṇasaṁdehamāpannānkṛśāṁgānkṣutprapīḍitān
"O outcaste, O man of great wisdom, save us by the gift of food; we stand at the edge of death, our bodies emaciated and tormented by hunger."
Verse 8 (skanda.7.129.8)
"Ah, blessed are you, worthy of honor are you — you should not be called an outcaste, for even in this catastrophic famine, grain remains stored in your house."
Verse 9 (skanda.7.129.9)
anāvṛṣṭihate deśe sasye ca pralayaṁ gate| ekaṁ yo bhojayedvipraṁ koṭirbhavati bhojitā
"When the land is stricken by drought and the crops have perished, whoever feeds even a single brahmin is as one who has fed a hundred million."
Verse 10 (skanda.7.129.10)
antyaja uvāca| aho āścaryamatulaṁ yadetaddṛśyate'dhunā| yadetanmadgṛhaṁ prāptā ṛṣayaścānnakāṁkṣiṇaḥ
The outcaste said: "Ah, what incomparable wonder is this that I now behold — that sages themselves, desiring food, have come to my house!"
Verse 11 (skanda.7.129.11)
śūdrānnamapi nādeyaṁ brāhmaṇaiḥ kimutāntyajāt
"Even the food of a Shudra is held unfit for brahmins to accept — how much more so the food of an outcaste!"
Verse 12 (skanda.7.129.12)
āmaṁ vā yadi vā pakvaṁ śūdrānnaṁ yastu bhakṣati| sa bhavecchūkaro grāmyastasya vā jāyate kule
"Whoever eats a Shudra's food, whether raw or cooked, becomes a village swine, or is born again into that very family."
Verse 13 (skanda.7.129.13)
amṛtaṁ brāhmaṇasyānnaṁ kṣatriyānnaṁ payaḥ smṛtam| vaiśyānnamannamityāhuḥ śūdrānnaṁ rudhiraṁ smṛtam
"The food of a brahmin is deemed nectar; the food of a Kshatriya is likened to milk; the food of a Vaishya is called mere food; the food of a Shudra is deemed blood."
Verse 14 (skanda.7.129.14)
śūdrānnaṁ śūdrasaṁparkaṁ śūdreṇa ca sahāsanam| śūdrādannāgamaścaiva jvalaṁtamapi pātayet
"A Shudra's food, association with a Shudra, sitting on the same seat with a Shudra, and receiving food from a Shudra — all these can bring down even one who blazes with spiritual fire."
Verse 15 (skanda.7.129.15)
agnihotrī tu yo vipraḥ śūdrānnānna nivartate| ete tasya praṇaśyaṁti ātmā brahma trayo'gnayaḥ
"Whatever brahmin, though a keeper of the sacred fire, does not abstain from a Shudra's food — for him all these perish: his self, his brahminical radiance, and the three sacred fires."
Verse 16 (skanda.7.129.16)
śūdrānnenodarasthena brāhmaṇo mriyate yadi| ṣaṇmāsābhyantare vipraḥ piśācaḥ so'bhijāyate
"If a brahmin dies while a Shudra's food still lies in his stomach, that brahmin is reborn within six months as a ghoul."
Verse 17 (skanda.7.129.17)
śūdrānnena dvijo yastu agnihotraṁ juhoti ca| caṇḍālo jāyate pretya śūdrāccaiveha daivataḥ
"Whatever twice-born offers the fire sacrifice using a Shudra's food is reborn after death as a Chandala, even though in this life he was accounted godlike, above even the Shudra."
Verse 18 (skanda.7.129.18)
yastu bhuñjati śūdrānnaṁ māsamekaṁ nirantaram| iha janmani śūdratvaṁ mṛtaḥ śūdro'bhijāyate
"Whoever eats a Shudra's food continuously for a month attains the condition of a Shudra in this very life, and upon death is reborn a Shudra."
Verse 19 (skanda.7.129.19)
rājānnaṁ teja ādatte śūdrānnaṁ brahmavarcasam| āyuḥ suvarṇakārānnaṁ yaśaścarmāvakartinaḥ
"The food of a king takes away vigor; the food of a Shudra takes away brahminical radiance; the food of a goldsmith takes away lifespan; the food of a leather-worker takes away fame."
Verse 20 (skanda.7.129.20)
kārukānnaṁ prajā hanti balaṁ nirṇejakasya ca| gaṇānnaṁ gaṇikānnaṁ ca lokebhyaḥ parikṛntati
"The food of an artisan destroys offspring, and the food of a washerman destroys strength; food from a communal feast and the food of a courtesan cut a person off from the worlds hereafter."
Verse 21 (skanda.7.129.21)
pūyaṁ cikitsakasyānnaṁ puṁścalyāścānnamindriyam| viṣṭhā vārdhuṣikasyānnaṁ śastravikrayiṇo malam
"The food of a physician is like pus, the food of a harlot is like semen; the food of a usurer is like excrement, and the food of a weapons-seller is like filth."
Verse 22 (skanda.7.129.22)
sahasrakṛtvastveteṣāmanne yadbhakṣite bhavet| tadekavāraṁ bhuktena kanyāvikrayiṇo bhavet
"Whatever sin arises from eating the food of all these a thousand times over, the same arises from eating just once the food of one who sells his own daughter."
Verse 23 (skanda.7.129.23)
sahasrakṛtvastasyaiva bhukte'nne yatphalaṁ bhavet| tadantyajānāmannena sakṛdbhuktena vai bhavet
"Whatever consequence follows from eating that same person's food a thousand times, the very same follows from eating the food of outcastes even once."
Verse 24 (skanda.7.129.24)
tatkathaṁ mama viprendrāścaṁḍālasyādhamātmanaḥ| dharmamevaṁ vijānanto nūnamannaṁ jihīrṣatha
"How then, O foremost brahmins, knowing dharma thus, do you nonetheless wish to take the food of me, a lowly Chandala?"
Verse 25 (skanda.7.129.25)
The sages said: "One who, facing the loss of his very life, accepts food is not tainted by sin, just as the sky is not smeared by mud."
Verse 26 (skanda.7.129.26)
ajīgartaḥ sutaṁ haṁtumupasarpanbubhukṣitaḥ| na cālipyata pāpena kṣutpratīghātamācaran
"Ajigarta, tormented by hunger, advanced to slay his own son, yet even in that act done to fend off starvation, he was not tainted by sin."
Verse 27 (skanda.7.129.27)
bhāradvājaḥ kṣudhārtastu saputro vijane vane| bahvīrgā upajagrāha bṛhajjyotirmahāmanāḥ
"Bharadvaja, tormented by hunger, along with his son, the great-souled Brihajjyoti, took many cows in a deserted forest."
Verse 28 (skanda.7.129.28)
kṣudhārto gītamabhyāgādviśvāmitraḥ śvajāghanīm| caṇḍālahastādādāya dharmādharmavicakṣaṇaḥ
"Vishvamitra, tormented by hunger, though versed in what is right and wrong, went and took a dog's haunch from the hand of an outcaste."
Verse 29 (skanda.7.129.29)
śvamāṁsamicchannartau tu dharmānna cyayate sma saḥ| prāṇānāṁ parirakṣārthaṁ vāmadevo na liptavān
"Desiring the flesh of a dog though it was not the proper season for such need, he did not fall from dharma; and Vamadeva too, acting to preserve his life, was not tainted."
Verse 30 (skanda.7.129.30)
evaṁ jñātvā dharmabuddhe sāṁprataṁ mā vicāraya| dadasvānnaṁ dadasvānnamasmākamiha yācatām
"Knowing this, O one of righteous mind, deliberate no further now; give us food, give us food — we who beg of you here."
Verse 31 (skanda.7.129.31)
caṁḍāla uvāca| yadyevaṁ bhavatāṁ kāryamidamaṁgīkṛtaṁ dhuvam| tadiyaṁ matsutā kanyā bhavadbhiḥ parigṛhyatām
The outcaste said: "If this is indeed your settled resolve and you have thus accepted it, then let this daughter of mine be received by you."
Verse 32 (skanda.7.129.32)
bhavatāṁ yograṇīrjyeṣṭhaḥ sa cemāmudvaheddhruvam| dāsye varṣāśanaṁ paścādīpsitaṁ bhavatāṁ dvijāḥ
"Let whoever among you is foremost and eldest surely wed her; thereafter, O twice-born ones, I shall give you a year's worth of the food you desire."
Verse 33 (skanda.7.129.33)
īśvara uvāca| ityuktā ṛṣayo devi lajjayā'ānatakandharāḥ| pratyālocya yathānyāyaṁ vasiṣṭhaṁ samanūdvahan
Ishvara said: O Goddess, hearing this, the sages, their heads bowed in shame, deliberated among themselves and, as was proper, had Vasishtha married to her.
Verse 34 (skanda.7.129.34)
vasiṣṭho'pi samākhyāya āpaddharmaṁ mahāmanāḥ| kālasyānantaraprekṣī prodvavāhā'ntyajāṅganām| akṣamāleti vai nāmnīṁ prasiddhā bhuvanatraye
The great-souled Vasishtha too, having expounded the law proper to times of crisis, and foreseeing what the turning of the age required, married that outcaste woman, renowned in the three worlds by the name Akshamala.
Verse 35 (skanda.7.129.35)
yadā svakīyatejobhirarkabiṁbamarundhata| aruṁdhatī tadā jātā devadānavavaṁditā
When by her own radiance she checked even the orb of the sun, she then became known as Arundhati — "she who restrains" — revered by both gods and demons.
Verse 36 (skanda.7.129.36)
yādṛśena tu bhartrā strī saṁyujyeta yathāvidhi| sā tādṛgeva bhavati samudreṇeva nimnagā
Just as a woman duly joined to a husband becomes like him, so too does a river, merging with the ocean, become like the ocean itself.
Verse 37 (skanda.7.129.37)
akṣamālā vasiṣṭhena saṁyuktā'dhamayonijā| śārṅgīva mandapālena jagāma hyarhaṇīyatām
Akshamala too, though born of a lowly womb, upon being joined with Vasishtha, attained a state of veneration, just as the bird Shrangi attained veneration through her union with Mandapala.
Verse 38 (skanda.7.129.38)
evaṁ kālakrameṇaiva prabhāsaṁ kṣetramāgatāḥ| saptarṣayo mahātmāno hyaruṁdhatyā samanvitāḥ
Thus, in the course of time, the great-souled Seven Sages, accompanied by Arundhati, came to the sacred field of Prabhasa.
Verse 39 (skanda.7.129.39)
tīrthāni preṣayāmāsuḥ sarvasiddhipradāni tām
They sent her forth among those sacred fords granting every attainment.
Verse 40 (skanda.7.129.40)
eṣāmanveṣamāṇānāṁ tava devī hyaruṁdhatī| apaśyalliṁgamekaṁ tu vṛkṣajālāṁtare sthitam
While they, O Goddess, were searching about, Arundhati beheld a single linga standing hidden amid a thicket of trees.
Verse 41 (skanda.7.129.41)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā devadeveśamevaṁ jātismarā'bhavat| pūrvasmiñjanmani mayā rajobhāvāṁtarasthayā
Beholding that god of gods, she became one who remembered her past birth, and thought: "In a former birth, dwelling in a state governed by the quality of rajas —"
Verse 42 (skanda.7.129.42)
ajñānabhāvāddeveśo nūnaṁ cātrārcitaḥ śivaḥ| tasmātkarmaphalaṁ prāptamantyajatvaṁ dvijanmanā
"— unknowingly worshipped this very god Shiva here; and as the fruit of that act, though born a twice-born, I came to be reborn as an outcaste."
Verse 43 (skanda.7.129.43)
kastena sadṛśo devaḥ śambhunā bhuvanatraye| rājyaṁ niyamimāmevaṁ yo ruṣṭo'pi prayacchati
"What god in the three worlds is equal to Shambhu, who, even when displeased, grants sovereignty to those devoted to his discipline?"
Verse 44 (skanda.7.129.44)
iti saṁciṁtya manasā tatraiva niratā'bhavat| pūjayāmāsa talliṁgaṁ divyābdānāṁ śataṁ priye
Thinking thus in her mind, she became wholly devoted to that place; O beloved, she worshipped that linga for a hundred divine years.
Verse 45 (skanda.7.129.45)
evaṁ tasya prabhāvena dṛśyate gaganāṁtare| aruṁdhatī satī hyeṣā dṛṣṭā duṣkṛtanāśinī
Thus, by the power of that linga, this virtuous Arundhati is seen in the midst of the sky — she whose very sight destroys evil deeds.
Verse 46 (skanda.7.129.46)
akṣamāleśvarastvevaṁ yathāvatkathitastava| tatastu dvāparasyānte kalau saṁdhyāṁśake gate
Thus has the account of Akshamaleshvara been told to you as it truly occurred. Thereafter, at the end of Dvapara, when the twilight portion of Kali arrived —
Verse 47 (skanda.7.129.47)
andhāsurasutaścāsīdugrasena iti śrutaḥ| sa prabhāsaṁ samāsādya putrārthaṁ liṁgameyivān
— there was a son of Andhasura known by the name Ugrasena; he went to Prabhasa and, for the sake of a son, came to that linga.
Verse 48 (skanda.7.129.48)
akṣamāleśvaraṁ nāma jñātvā māhātmyamadbhutam| samārādhya mahādevaṁ nava varṣāṇi paṁca ca| saṁprāptavāṁstadā putraṁ kaṁsāsuramiti śrutam
Learning of the wondrous glory of that linga named Akshamaleshvara, he worshipped Mahadeva for fourteen years; then he obtained a son known by the name of the demon Kamsa.
Verse 49 (skanda.7.129.49)
tatkālāntaramārabhya ugraseneśvaro'bhavat| pāpaghnaṁ sarvajaṁtūnāṁ darśanātsparśanādapi
From that time onward the linga came to be known as Ugraseneshvara; it destroys the sin of all living beings by mere sight or even by touch.
Verse 50 (skanda.7.129.50)
brahmahatyā surāpānaṁ steyaṁ gurvaṁganāgamaḥ| mahānti pātakānyāhurnaśyaṁti tasya darśanāt
The killing of a brahmin, drinking liquor, theft, and violating the teacher's wife — these great sins spoken of are all destroyed by the mere sight of it.
Verse 51 (skanda.7.129.51)
tatraiva ṛṣipañcamyāṁ prāpte bhādrapade śubhe| akṣamāleśvaraṁ pūjya mucyate nārakādbhayāt
There itself, on the auspicious Rishi-panchami of the month of Bhadrapada, one who worships Akshamaleshvara is freed from the terror of hell.
Verse 52 (skanda.7.129.52)
gopradānaṁ praśaṁsaṁti tatrānnamudakaṁ tathā| sarvapāpavināśāya pretyānaṁtasukhāya ca
There the gift of a cow, and likewise of food and water, are praised, as leading to the destruction of every sin and to endless happiness after death.
Verse 53 (skanda.7.129.53)
iti te kathitaṁ devi hyakṣamāleśvarodbhavam| māhātmyaṁ pāpaśamanaṁ śrutaṁ duḥkhanibarhaṇam
O Goddess, thus has been told to you this sin-quelling glory of the origin of Akshamaleshvara, which, merely by being heard, removes sorrow.
