Prabhasa Khanda · Chapter 135
The Glory of Dukhantakarini (Shitala)
Verse 1 (skanda.7.135.1)
īśvara uvāca| tatraiva saṁsthitāṁ paśyeddevīṁ duḥkhāṁtakāriṇīm| śītaleti purā khyātā yuge dvāparasaṁjñite| kalau punaḥ samākhyātāṁ kaliduḥkhāntakāriṇīm
Ishvara said: There too one should behold the goddess who puts an end to sorrow; in the Dvapara age she was known as Shitala, and again in Kali she is proclaimed by the name Kali-dukkhantakarini, "she who ends the sufferings of Kali."
Verse 2 (skanda.7.135.2)
śītalaṁ kurute dehaṁ bālānāṁ rogavarjitam| pūjitā bhaktibhāvena tena sā śītalā smṛtā
She makes the bodies of children cool and free of disease; because she is worshipped with devotion, she is remembered by the name Shitala, "the cooling one."
Verse 3 (skanda.7.135.3)
visphoṭānāṁ praśāṁtyarthaṁ bālānāṁ caiva kāraṇāt| mānena māpitānkṛtvā masūrāṁstatra kuṭṭayet
For the pacification of children's pustules and their cause, one should measure out lentils by a fixed measure and grind them there.
Verse 4 (skanda.7.135.4)
śītalāpurato dattvā bālāḥ santu nirāmayāḥ| visphoṭacarcikādīnāṁ vātādīnāṁ śamo bhavet
By offering it before Shitala, let the children remain free of illness; pustules, chicken-pox and the like, and disorders caused by wind, are thereby calmed.
Verse 5 (skanda.7.135.5)
śrāddhaṁ tatraiva kurvīta brāhmaṇāṁstatra bhojayet
One should perform the ancestral rite there, and there feed the brahmins.
Verse 6 (skanda.7.135.6)
karpūraṁ kusumaṁ caiva mṛganābhiṁ sucandanam| puṣpāṇi ca sugandhāni naivedyaṁ ghṛtapāyasam| nivedya devyai tatsarvaṁ daṁpatyoḥ paridhāpayet
Camphor, flowers, musk, fine sandalwood, fragrant blossoms, and an offering of ghee-rice pudding — all this, having been presented to the goddess, should then be given for the couple to wear or partake of.
Verse 7 (skanda.7.135.7)
navamyāṁ śuklapakṣe tu mālāṁ vilvamayīṁ śubhām| bhaktyā nivedya tāṁ devyai sarvasiddhimavāpnuyāt
On the ninth day of the bright fortnight, having devotedly offered an auspicious garland of bilva leaves to the goddess, one attains every accomplishment.
