The Glory of Devamata Gauri

Verse 1 (skanda.7.185.1)

ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि देवमातरमव्ययाम्। मंकीशान्नैर्ऋते भागे गौरीरूपसमाश्रिताम्। देवमाता सरस्वत्या नाम लोकेषु गीयते

tato gacchenmahādevi devamātaramavyayām| maṁkīśānnairṛte bhāge gaurīrūpasamāśritām| devamātā sarasvatyā nāma lokeṣu gīyate

Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the imperishable Devamata, who abides in the form of Gauri to the southwest of Mankishvara. She is sung of among people by the name Devamata of Sarasvati.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.185.2)

पादुकासनसंस्था च तत्र देवी सरस्वती। गौरीरूपेण सा तत्र वडवाश्रितविग्रहा

pādukāsanasaṁsthā ca tatra devī sarasvatī| gaurīrūpeṇa sā tatra vaḍavāśritavigrahā

There the goddess Sarasvati is established upon a pair of sandals; there, in the form of Gauri, her form rests upon the submarine fire (Vadava).

Verse 3 (skanda.7.185.3)

मातृवद्रक्षिता देवा वडवानलभीतितः। देवमातेति लोकेऽस्मिंस्ततः सा विबुधैः कृता

mātṛvadrakṣitā devā vaḍavānalabhītitaḥ| devamāteti loke'smiṁstataḥ sā vibudhaiḥ kṛtā

By her the gods were protected like a mother from the fear of the submarine fire; hence in this world she was named Devamata (Mother of the Gods) by the wise.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.185.4)

माघे मासे तृतीयायां यस्तामर्चयते नरः। नारी वा संयता साध्वी सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात्

māghe māse tṛtīyāyāṁ yastāmarcayate naraḥ| nārī vā saṁyatā sādhvī sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt

On the third day of the month of Magha, whatever man, or self-disciplined and virtuous woman, worships her, obtains all desires.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.185.5)

दंपती भोजयेद्यस्तु पायसैः शर्करादिभिः। गौरीसहस्रभोज्यस्य दत्तस्य फलमाप्नुयात्

daṁpatī bhojayedyastu pāyasaiḥ śarkarādibhiḥ| gaurīsahasrabhojyasya dattasya phalamāpnuyāt

Whoever feeds a married couple with rice-pudding, sugar and the like, obtains the fruit of offering a thousand food-gifts to Gauri.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.185.6)

सुवर्णपादुका देया तत्र विप्राय शीलिने

suvarṇapādukā deyā tatra viprāya śīline

One should give golden sandals there to a virtuous brahmin.
