The Glory of Mankishvara

Verse 1 (skanda.7.184.1)

ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि मंकीश्वरमनुत्तमम्। त्रिसंगमसमीपस्थं सर्वपातकनाशनम्

tato gacchenmahādevi maṁkīśvaramanuttamam| trisaṁgamasamīpasthaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam

Then, O great Goddess, one should go to the incomparable Mankishvara, situated near the Trisangama, the destroyer of all sins.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.184.2)

मंकीनाम ऋषिः पूर्वमासीत्स तपतां वरः। स च ज्ञात्वा महाक्षेत्रं प्रभासं शंकरप्रियम्

maṁkīnāma ṛṣiḥ pūrvamāsītsa tapatāṁ varaḥ| sa ca jñātvā mahākṣetraṁ prabhāsaṁ śaṁkarapriyam

In former times there was a sage named Manki, foremost among ascetics. Having recognized that great field of Prabhasa, dear to Shankara,

Verse 3 (skanda.7.184.3)

अतपद्वै तपो घोरं कन्दमूलफलाशनः। वर्षाणामयुतं साग्रं प्रतिष्ठाप्य महेश्वरम्

atapadvai tapo ghoraṁ kandamūlaphalāśanaḥ| varṣāṇāmayutaṁ sāgraṁ pratiṣṭhāpya maheśvaram

he performed terrible austerity, subsisting on roots, bulbs, and fruits, having established Maheshvara, for a little more than ten thousand years.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.184.4)

ततस्तुष्टो महादेवो ददौ प्रीतो वरं तदा। स वव्रे यदि तुष्टोऽसि अस्मिन्स्थाने स्थितो भव

tatastuṣṭo mahādevo dadau prīto varaṁ tadā| sa vavre yadi tuṣṭo'si asminsthāne sthito bhava

Then, pleased, Mahadeva lovingly granted him a boon; he chose this: 'If you are pleased, remain established in this very place.'

Verse 5 (skanda.7.184.5)

मन्नामांकितलिंगस्तु वस कल्पायुतायुतम्। एवमस्त्वित्यथेत्युक्त्वा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत

mannāmāṁkitaliṁgastu vasa kalpāyutāyutam| evamastvityathetyuktvā tatraivāntaradhīyata

'Abide here, as a linga marked with my name, for ten thousand kalpas.' Saying 'so be it,' he vanished right there.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.184.6)

तदाप्रभृति तल्लिंगं मंकीश्वरमिति श्रुतम्। माघे मासे त्रयोदश्यां चतुर्दश्यामथापि वा

tadāprabhṛti talliṁgaṁ maṁkīśvaramiti śrutam| māghe māse trayodaśyāṁ caturdaśyāmathāpi vā

From that time on, that linga became known by the name Mankishvara. On the thirteenth day of the month of Magha, or also on the fourteenth,

Verse 7 (skanda.7.184.7)

पूज्याः पंचोपचारेण प्राप्नुयादीप्सितं फलम्। गोदानं तत्र वै देयं सम्यग्यात्राफलेप्सुभिः

pūjyāḥ pañcopacāreṇa prāpnuyādīpsitaṁ phalam| godānaṁ tatra vai deyaṁ samyagyātrāphalepsubhiḥ

Worshipped with the five offerings, one obtains the desired fruit; those desiring the complete fruit of the pilgrimage should give a cow there.
