The Glory of Kumareshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.7.215.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। ततो गच्छेन्महादेवि कुमारेश्वरमुत्तमम्। मार्कण्डेश्वरतो देवि दक्षिणे नातिदूरतः। धनुर्विंशतिभिस्तत्र स्थितं स्वामिप्रतिष्ठितम्

īśvara uvāca| tato gacchenmahādevi kumāreśvaramuttamam| mārkaṇḍeśvarato devi dakṣiṇe nātidūrataḥ| dhanurviṁśatibhistatra sthitaṁ svāmipratiṣṭhitam

Ishvara said: Then, O great Goddess, one should proceed to the excellent Kumareshvara. O Goddess, it is situated not far to the south of Markandeshvara, twenty bow-lengths away, established by Svami (Kartikeya) himself.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.215.2)

ततः कृत्वा तपो घोरं कार्त्तिकेयेन भाभिनि। परदारापहारोत्थपापानां नाशहेतवे

tataḥ kṛtvā tapo ghoraṁ kārttikeyena bhābhini| paradārāpahārotthapāpānāṁ nāśahetave

O radiant one, Karttikeya performed severe austerity there, for the destruction of sins born of the abduction of another's wife,

Verse 3 (skanda.7.215.3)

लिंगं स्थापितवांस्तत्र स मुक्तः किल्विषात्ततः। वैराग्याद्यौवनं त्यक्त्वा कौमारं पुनराददे

liṅgaṁ sthāpitavāṁstatra sa muktaḥ kilviṣāttataḥ| vairāgyādyauvanaṁ tyaktvā kaumāraṁ punarādade

and established the linga there, whereby he was freed from that sin. Out of dispassion, he cast off his youth and took up again the state of eternal boyhood.

Verse 4 (skanda.7.215.4)

पितॄन्हत्वा सुमाली च तमाराधितवान्पुरा। सोऽपि मुक्तोऽभवद्देवि पापात्पितृवधोद्भवात्

pitṝnhatvā sumālī ca tamārādhitavānpurā| so'pi mukto'bhavaddevi pāpātpitṛvadhodbhavāt

Long ago, Sumali, having slain his ancestors, also worshipped him there; O Goddess, he too was freed from the sin born of the murder of his forebears.

Verse 5 (skanda.7.215.5)

कुमारेश्वरनामैतत्पूजितं वै सुरासुरैः। तस्याग्रतः कुमारस्य कूपस्तिष्ठति भामिनि

kumāreśvaranāmaitatpūjitaṁ vai surāsuraiḥ| tasyāgrataḥ kumārasya kūpastiṣṭhati bhāmini

This linga, known by the name Kumareshvara, is worshipped by both gods and demons; O radiant one, in front of that Kumara stands a well.

Verse 6 (skanda.7.215.6)

तत्र स्नात्वा पूजयेद्यः शूलिनं स्वामिपूजितम्। स मुक्तः पातकैः सर्वैर्गच्छेत्स्वामिपुरं महत्

tatra snātvā pūjayedyaḥ śūlinaṁ svāmipūjitam| sa muktaḥ pātakaiḥ sarvairgacchetsvāmipuraṁ mahat

Whoever bathes there and worships the trident-bearer, honored by Svami himself, is freed from all sins and attains the great city of Svami.

Verse 7 (skanda.7.215.7)

शातकौंभमयं यस्तु ताम्रचूडं द्विजातये। दद्यात्स्वामिनमुद्दिश्य स तु यात्राफलं लभेत्

śātakauṁbhamayaṁ yastu tāmracūḍaṁ dvijātaye| dadyātsvāminamuddiśya sa tu yātrāphalaṁ labhet

Whoever, with Svami as the intended object, gives a twice-born a gold cock with a copper-red crest obtains the full fruit of the pilgrimage.
