The Glory of Gautameshvara

Verse 1 (skanda.7.216.1)

ईश्वर उवाच। मार्कण्डेश्वरतो देवि उत्तरे लिंगमुत्तमम्। धनुषां पञ्चदशभिर्गौतमेश्वरनामकम्

īśvara uvāca| mārkaṇḍeśvarato devi uttare liṅgamuttamam| dhanuṣāṁ pañcadaśabhirgautameśvaranāmakam

Ishvara said: O Goddess, fifteen bow-lengths to the north of Markandeshvara stands the excellent linga named Gautameshvara.

Verse 2 (skanda.7.216.2)

गुरुं हत्वा पुरा देवि गौतमः पापदुःखितः। तत्र लिंगं प्रतिष्ठाप्य तस्मात्पापाद्व्यमुच्यत

guruṁ hatvā purā devi gautamaḥ pāpaduḥkhitaḥ| tatra liṅgaṁ pratiṣṭhāpya tasmātpāpādvyamucyata

Long ago, Gautama, having slain his teacher and grieving from that sin, established the linga there, and was thereby freed from that sin.

Verse 3 (skanda.7.216.3)

यस्तत्र कपिलां दद्यात्स्नात्वा नद्यां विधानतः। संपूज्य विधिवल्लिंगं मुच्यते पञ्चपातकैः

yastatra kapilāṁ dadyātsnātvā nadyāṁ vidhānataḥ| saṁpūjya vidhivalliṅgaṁ mucyate pañcapātakaiḥ

Whoever bathes duly in the river there, worships the linga according to rite, and gives a tawny cow is freed from the five great sins.
